INDUSTRY NEWS YAMAHA MT-10 AND MT10 SP – FIRST LOOK

YAMAHA FINALLY GIVES THE 2022 MT-10 RANGE THE ONCE OVER. The Yamaha MT-10 has, at least in our opinion here at SBI, one of the most underrated bikes on the market. Perhaps it’s because Yamaha bought the bike out in 2016 and essentially left it there while others (Ducati, KTM, Aprilia, etc.) pushed the naked bike game onwards to ever dizzying heights. Or that it looks like a bug on wheels? That’s probably the answer. Either way, for 2022, Yamaha is giving the MT-10 a highly deserved facelift. And, even better, we’ll be getting the SP that everyone else got a few years ago. Both bikes share the same engine and chassis, although the SP gets shiny electric Ohlins similar to what’s on the YZF-R1M, steel braided brake lines, and a funky lower fairing/belly pan. The motor is taken from the R1 but retains the steel conrods for better mid-range torque, and although Yamaha doesn’t publish power and torque figures in the U.S, the Euro bikes will have 163 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque, so expect somewhere near those numbers when we get our bikes in the first and second quarter of next year. Yamaha’s made a big effort to relay as much "emotion" to the rider as possible by enhancing the intake growl of the MT motor via different length intake tubes and cut-outs in the tank that direct the sound to the rider, 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2022

so you better wear ear plugs. There’s been a slight increase in wheelbase from 55.1 to 55.3 inches, although the frames remain largely unchanged. What has changed is the looks, with the MT-09 clearly having an influence on its big brother. New "eyebrow" LEDs sit atop the usual bug-eyed headlights and give the MT a pretty menacing face, and there’s a new R1-derived 4.2 -inch TFT dash. The 2022 Yamaha MT-10 SP will come in the exclusive Liquid Metal/Raven color scheme and will be available from dealers in May 2022 for an MSRP of $16,899. The base model comes in Cyan Storm or Matte Raven Black and will be available from dealers in March 2022 for an MSRP of $13,999. FEBRUARY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 17

PIKES PEAK

THE FIRST RIDE: MULTISTRADA V4 PIKES PEAK MAKE NO MISTAKE, the Ducati Multistrada V4 platform is indeed a mountain king. With the V4 Granturismo 1158cc powerplant, the Multistrada V4 advances the model's pedigree from its humble beginnings by light-years. However, the V4 Pikes Peak edition is something altogether different. Combining advanced moto-technology with highperformance sport-driven components with progressive ergonomics, the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak doesn't only combine the best of the sport, touring, and adventure worlds... It is the perfect storm in the expansive sea of dual-sport motorcycles. The Pikes Peak edition of the Multistrada takes its namesake from the famed Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, which held its first competition in 1916. Floyd Clymer took the winning honors for the motorcycle class. Ducati's relationship with the racing event is significant, beginning in 2008 and having won a total of three times on a Multistrada 1200 (2010, 2011, and 2012) and again on a Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak edition (2018), piloted by the late and legendary Carlin Dunne. The 2011 Mulistrada 1200 S Pike Peak was the first Ducati to be named for a North American race event and would go on to prove its worthiness in performance and sales. Since 2011, one out of every six Multistradas sold has been a Pikes Peak edition. That brings us to the 2022 Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, a sportier and more aggressive version of the 2021 Multistrada V4, V4 S and V4 Sport. With an invitation from Ducati North America to test the 2022 Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak in the hills of Southern California, I couldn't think of a better reason to saddle up and put the new ride through its paces. The Pikes Peak models have all had sporty colorways to promote their competitive pedigree. The 2022 model continues that tradition with a MotoGP inspired livery, specifically that of the factory Ducati team's Desmosedici GP21 machine. Carbon fiber components and accents such as the front mudguard 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2022

and beak, the carbon fiber tipped Akrapovic titanium muffler, the two-toned "V4" branded seat initiate the visual distinguishments between the V4 Pikes Peak and the base models. The V4 Pikes Peak utilizes a single-sided swingarm whereas the base models employ a double-sided or standard swingarm configuration. The spoked front wheel on the base versions is larger, measuring 19 inches, and is equipped with Pirelli Scorpion tires. The V4 Pikes Peak sports weight saving Marchesini forged wheels (8.8 pounds saved overall compared to the Multistrada V4 S), with 17 inch front, fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires (120/70 front, 190/55 rear). In the saddle, very little adjustment time was needed. A rider of my size (6 foot, 270 pounds) often needs to make several adjustments before finding a sweet spot in the seat. Not the case for me with the V4 Pikes Peak. Straight away, the ergonomics worked for my build. Flat-footed and all controls within a comfortable reach, I felt right at home. Turning on the bike, you are greeted with a sleek animation on the large 6.5 inch TFT display. The dash includes all the vitals of the motorcycle, additional data and serves as an interface for the Ducati Connect smartphone app. On the dash you can select your riding mode, there are four to choose from: Urban (low power output at 115hp), Touring (full 170hp output with a smooth throttle response), Sport (full 170hp with a sport suspension mode and lower engagements of traction control and wheelie control) and Race (high power, least amount of electronic aid engagement, also known as beast mode). The adaptive cruise control status is also displayed when activated. All activations, settings and adjustments are made via a switch cluster at the handlebar. It was a little chilly on the day of the press ride and the route would have our squad of riders traveling up, over and through Palm Desert, the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains, and Idyllwild. Through the stop-and-go traffic of Palm Springs en route to the mountain roads, I can see how the Multistrada V4 Pikes FEBRUARY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 29

THE FIRST RIDE: MULTISTRADA V4 PIKES PEAK Peak would perform as a commuter bike or as a daily rider. It is ridiculously light and nimble for a bike of its size and weight (527 pounds, wet). It moved through traffic with agility and a hint of grace. Later on in the day when filtering through the evening rush hour, those qualities were highly appreciated. On and upward into the hills, the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak ripped on the asphalt with exhilarating performance and a rhythmic heavily noted roar from the Akrapovic exhaust. Being from the East Coast, I don't get to ride the canyons roads in California as much I would like to so I typically approach these roads with respect and assertive caution. Not so much the case on this ride. The stability and handling of the V4 Pikes Peak is a confidence amplifier. Ascending the hills and blasting through the twisties, the output of the V4 Granturismo engine is delivered smoothly and deliberately. No hesitation. No jarring. Maneuverability required minimal bar input and less physical effort. It was fun. And that's what riding should be... Fun. The Pikes Peak borrows the suspension from the Panigale V4 S and Streetfighter V4 S, employing the Ohlins Smart-EC 2.0 electronic system that features event-based technology. This suspension auto-adjusts based on the "event" or how the bike is being ridden. At the front end, you'll find a set of fully adjustable Ohlins 48mm forks while an Ohlins TTX36 handles the work at the rear. The Brembo braking setup includes Stylema calipers with 330mm front rotors paired with the same brake pads found on the Panigale V4, providing a better initial bite without the drag. When you compare the overall dynamics of the V4 Pikes Peak chassis to the base Multistrada V4 models, there is an increased rake and trail (25.74 degrees and 4.7 inches), a decreased 6.7 inches of rear wheel travel, and an increased wheelbase (62.8 inches). These all factor in how well the bike handles the road. And I found no faults, even at higher elevations and lower temps. It handles better than a majority of sportbikes on the market. Its looks are very deceiving.

Toward the end of the ride day, we hit a stretch of highway where I was excited to open the throttle wide and let that V4 motor flare. Tucked in behind the windscreen at higher speeds, the V4 Pikes Peak remained stable and unwavering. I took the opportunity to explore the adaptive cruise control. The dual radar-based system (radar units at the front and the rear of the bike) is comprehensive, to say the least. I would need more time before I would be accustomed to its functionality but the overall benefits are undeniable. In short: You set your cruise speed and carry on, if another vehicle in front of you is moving at a slower rate of speed, the bike will detect it, and slow itself down, when the road in front of clears, the bike returns to the set cruise speed. Those radar units also provide blind spot detection that alerts you when another vehicle, perhaps out of your usual field of vision is getting closer than it should. Cutting edge moto-tech, indeed. The 2022 Ducati Multistrada V4 Pike Peak has an MSRP of $28,995 and is scheduled to arrive in dealerships in February of 2022. Ducati has successfully created a true multi-purpose machine that can cater to the needs of the global riding community. I wouldn't be surprised to spot a V4 Pikes Peak burning laps at the track. For the tourers and weekend warriors, the Pikes Peak V4 can handle the long hauls, especially when fitted with panniers and other touring accessories. For the commuter, the V4 Pikes Peak's impressive ergonomics provide comfort and rideability even in stop-and-go traffic. And for the hooligans and canyon carvers, the 2022 Ducati V4 Pikes Peak just might be the bad influence that you've been missing.

The intermediate level is the most hotly contested of all grand prix classes, due to the parity that exists between machines and the fact this is the final step on the ladder before cracking the big time in MotoGP. The 2022 season marks the fourth for America’s sole representatives in the MotoGP paddock in the American Racing Team.

At a regal event at team owner Eitan Butbul’s estate in Calabasas, CA, Beaubier put his most polished foot forward for the established racing glitterati, but is under no illusions as to the task at hand in 2022.

This year, the team will be fronted once again by five-time MotoAmerica and Moto2 sophomore, Cameron Beaubier, and his new teammate, 2021 MotoAmerica Supersport Champion, Sean Dylan Kelly, marking the first all-American grand prix team since Wayne Rainey and John Kocinski flew the flag for Team Roberts in 1992.

Beaubier’s rookie season was marred by too many crashes interspersed with the kind of speed that made him near unbeatable on the factory Yamaha in MotoAmerica, but a rousing ride to fifth at Circuit of The Americas in front of a roaring partisan home crowd, backing that up with another fifth at the following round at the second Portimao race gave the 29-year-old the belief he belongs with the world’s best.

“It’s kind of time,” the Californian said. “I want to run up front. I did on a couple of occasions last year when everything went right and it felt really good. I want more of that.”

“It was such a weight lifted off my shoulders, because going into that race, there was no excuses,” Beaubier said of Austin 2021. “I knew the track. I’d learned the bike and all that stuff. It just goes to show how freaking fast those guys are. They’re all ruthless. They’re not afraid to crash. They get right back up when they do, and they go faster. It’s pretty incredible. The lap times we were doing on the Moto2 bikes (at COTA), we were going faster than I went on the superbike around there with 70 less horsepower.”

“Yeah, life’s great,” he says, as the smile broadens on his face. “I’ve got a great family, got married, have my wife. It was cool to have her come over to Europe with me and be able to show her around, the little bit I know about the place, because she’s never been out of the country. On that note, it’s been really cool. Life’s good.”

Across the room, Sean Dylan Kelly is bubbling with the enthusiasm reserved solely for the youthful. The 19-year-old, fresh from sealing the 2021 MotoAmerica Although the task to bring America back to glory Supersport Championship, is determined to not weighs heavily on his shoulders, Beaubier’s in the best just make up the numbers in his rookie season for personal space of his life. Newly married to long-time American Racing but turn as many heads as possible, partner Shelby, who will join him for the majority of something he already did with a fine ride to ninth at the season at their base about 45 minutes southwest the end-of-year Moto2 test at Jerez last November, of Barcelona, Beaubier’s got it all lined up to have a placing ahead of Albert Arenas, Pedro Acosta, Marcel stellar season on the American Racing Team Kalex. Motorcycle suspension schmention... What's it really all about anyway? - A conversation with Profesional Suspension Tuner Bobby Loo. 66 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2022

SUSPENSION & YOUR MOTORCYCLE

... IT MATTERS!

WORDS: ANA MATA IMAGES: ETECH PHOTOS, EROD PHOTOGRAPHY FEBRUARY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 67

THE LIFE: SUSPENSION & YOUR MOTORCYCLE ASK ANY RACER, any real racer, and they'll tell you there's absolutely nothing like getting your bike on a rail, gliding through a turn at full lean and throttle pinned. But how do us mere mortals do such a thing!? Ask professional tuner Bobby Loo and he's got one word for you: suspension. Often a component on the bike most novice riders forget about and leave untouched. But avid track junkies can't do without full aftermarket. Good customizable forks and shocks are an absolute necessity when we talk about cornering a sportbike and building confidence. As Bobby describes it, "We all want our bikes to handle a certain way. It's about being more comfortable and confident and feel is confidence." Bobby believes that getting suspension dialed in is the cheapest, quickest, and best upgrade to a sportbike, so it only makes sense to take a harder look at how your bike's suspension is currently set up. But what does suspension do anyway? In short it keeps the bike's tires in contact with the road. And that's so imperative on the streets when a contact patch no larger than a credit card is what's keeping you and your bike right side up as you maneuver around cars, debris, and all the other crazy unknowns that come with street riding. But do street riders really need to customize their suspension if they are just casually cruising? According to Bobby, yes they do! "Most [riders] are afraid to turn the clickers, or think they don't need it, but when you find a happy medium you'll see even with casual street riding you'll feel that the bike wants to steer for you and just feels more stable." 68 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2022

THE LIFE: SUSPENSION & YOUR MOTORCYCLE

70 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2022

There's nothing to be fearful of. Bobby's perspective is that "back in the day, the suspension was a little bit to be scared of because if you went too far one way or the other, the forks would not move. The shock would not move. But nowadays they set it up so there's a smaller range to work with that way you don't hurt yourself." These adjustments equal a greater margin for error when you're testing different setups and really pushing the suspension. When we talk about pushing a bike, we're really talking about getting the suspension working. Heavy braking, hard acceleration, and of course as much lean as we can get away with... All these things require front and rear suspension to work in harmony. This is, after all, a precision sport, where millimeters, plus or minus, can change the entire geometry of a bike and the way the bike handles. From my personal experience, I know the struggles that come from the bike not feeling right, and the toll it can take on a racers mental game. The self-doubt, lack of trust in the bike, and confidence to push the bike are all negative aspects I have struggled with in my track riding years. And the only thing that has helped me overcome those demons and set my own personal best laps times has been working one on one with a suspension tuner and turning some clickers. But when is it too much? Because I have been there as well. Turning dials for so long that I became oversensitive to what the bike was doing. Backed off the pace too much due to focusing on what the bike was doing. And then getting so frustrated FEBRUARY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 71

THE LIFE: SUSPENSION & YOUR MOTORCYCLE that I wanted to just push my bike over and walk away. That's when Bobby recommends, "if you feel like you're not making much improvement when you're clicking the dials, then step back, reassess if it's you and not the bike. How is it working everywhere, not just in 1 or 2 corners." And this advice rings very true. Bikes don't have issues in 1 turn. They will have the same issue in every turn. It's the rider's inputs into the bike that cause it to be unsettled in 1 or 2 turns. I know after my most recent right-sided low side that I was unintentionally putting a secondary input into the handlebars when I was heading into a right turn causing the bike to become unsettled. It wasn't until I had a suspension tuner follow me around the track that I was called out on it and was able to correct it. So the moral of the story is... Suspension does matter. Bobby's best advice to new riders is, "Just go for it. Find a tuner. It's nothing to be afraid of. And it's definitely nice to have 1 on 1 time with a tuner to really get the bike where you want it. And if you're just a street rider, remember to service your suspension because you're suspension changes as the fork oil degrades, etc." The best way to gain (or lose) confidence in your bike is through the suspension. So push those fears aside. Turn some clickers. And grip it and rip it!
