Issue Two, 2012

Foal futurity, video trip & auction As we head towards our 4th birthday, we’re delighted to have had 14 entries in the annual foal futurity, judged by Ian Francis, and to have divvied up a prize pool of $1,000 between the first four placegetters. Thanks again to all entrants on a great competition. Preparation for Equitana and Equidays is well underway and we’ve seen and approved Horse Talk TV’s segment on Sportaloosas, to be screened later this year. Kiwi Sportaloosa will have video camera in hand ready to tackle another Sportaloosa video trip immediately after Equitana. It’s currently a 3-state visit: Victoria, South Australia and NSW and she’ll try hard to get to as many stallions as possible. The cost for Sportaloosa stallion owners is $150 (NZD) plus share of travel, which includes individual video, photos, inclusion in the 2013 Sportaloosa stallion DVD, promotion of videos on our web site and plenty more. We’ve managed so much promotion for the stallions filmed during the last trip, simply because we had good quality video footage available, that we really recommend taking part! Late this year, we’ll also be running another exciting Sportaloosa auction. This is a stunning opportunity to draw a heap of attention to quality spotted horses for sale, so stand by for more details. Until next time

g n i t s e t A N D It’s wonderful to see Sportaloosa stallion owners taking advantage of genetic testing to determine whether or not there are any disorders lurking, that need to be managed. We’re recording any DNA results sent through to us in the Sportaloosa studbook, so we can keep an accurate record that interested breeders can access. Here are a few of the most recent results: • Kerry Hartmann’s stallion Yallawa Timeless Dream has tested negative for PSSM1, as have Skip’s Supreme, Lori’s Flashpoint Af Lyn, Cayuse Blizzard-O-Lena, Yallawa Bound For Stardom and Cayuse Chatta Lena

Several mares at Cayuse Sportaloosas, with very minimal colour, have tested LPLP (two copies of the LP gene). A much quicker way to know for sure than breeding a mare for 20 years!

Excitingly, a test for LP - the ‘appaloosa’ gene is available through Animal Genetics in Florida, USA. This isn’t a test for the actual LP mutation (that’s still to come) but it should be close to 100% accurate. Many horses won’t need to be tested for LP, because their physical appearance makes it obvious whether they carry one or two copies. Others fall squarely into the ‘maybe’ bracket and it’s here that you truly see the value of this new test. Some interesting results: • Skip’s Supreme has tested LPlp (one copy of the LP gene), as has the young filly Mighty Enticing. The physical appearance of both of these horses suggests they were likely to have 2 copies.

Some Do’s and Don’t For Starting Your Young Jumping Horse • • •

• •

• •

Don’t consider any obstacle under 60cm as a jump,it is a test of obedience for your horse to go where you send it For a horse to jump with rythmn and balance it must have it in the canter before you ever go near a jump. Do teach your horse horse to jump on a loose rein, he can then develop the rhythm and freedom of head and neck,It is the horses job to take off, watch what he’s doing and look after his own legs. If you have to “create a canter” and maufacture balance then unfortunately your horse has no talent, these must be natural for a good horse. For riders it is good to learn to stand up in your stirrups and balance there at the walk, trot and canter.Whe you stand in your stirrups your pelvis is in balance over the horses’s wither which is perfect, same as jockeys on racehorses with their short stirrups! It is a fallacy that ‘you lean forward over a jump’! When you lean the top of your body forward your backside goes out the back which equals no shift in balance. If you concentrate on being balanced and giving clear messages to your horse he can perform.

Ten habits of competent riders We can all think of a rider we know who seems to always do well, has calm, happy horses and steadily improves their horse’s physical and mental state in an almost effortless manner. We watch and admire from afar but in fact, we can all stand to learn from their regular habits and “way of being” in order to develop our own horse riding mantra. 1. Persistence: good riders are willing to try, try again. They know that there will be more rides, more days and the slow and steady approach always wins the “race”. 2. Open-mindedness: good riders know there is something to be learned from everyone, even if to see proof of why NoT to do something. These riders are not discipline racist and are always aware that good riding is good riding, regardless of the saddle or style. 3. Patience: good riders are willing to wait to reap the rewards. They know that even if something falls apart today, there will be more days to come and small steps, even backward, are more beneficial than quick fixes or shortcuts. 4. Quitting: this may seem counter-intuitive but good riders quit while they’re ahead. They ride for short periods of time to their highest ability then call it a day. They seem to intuitively know when enough is enough. 5. Effectiveness: good riders seek maximum effectiveness with minimum harm. They make every step count and they resist overriding the horse for the sake of performance. 6. Self-improvement: good riders regularly seek to upgrade their riding skills and general horse education. They are willing to spend time, money and humility in the quest for constant self-improvement. 7. Seeing the big picture: good riders enjoy the “work” and the path as much as they do the goal achievement. They know that each day and each step is as important as the other and is a nature progression in development. 8. Role models: good riders know good riding when they see it and seek to surround themselves with those who will not only help them improve on a riding level but also on a more personal and inspirational level as well. 9. Problem solving: good riders can trouble shoot through problems to come to gratifying solutions. They have many tools and know there is more than one way to approach a situation. They are always willing to try new things. 10. Horse listeners: good riders are expert horse listeners! They are sensitive to the feedback from their horses and adjust their responses accordingly.

What kind of a spot? Q How do you describe this patch, which appears on a horse with an Appaloosa sire and dam.

A These spots are a

Frame overo minimals do have a spot or two on the side of the body, but it’s not round, and it’s sharply defined...

coat pattern variant that occurs on some Appaloosas. Since they only happen infrequently, they are a bit of a surprise when they show up. I call them “snowball spots”, since they look like big clumps of the more familiar snowflakes that some Appaloosas get as they roan.

Splashed white “comes up from below” and involves a lot of face white when levels of expression are high enough to produce a body spot...

However, snowball spots differ from snowflake roaning, in that they are present from birth. Sometimes, they are mistaken for “paint” markings, but this they are not. They are simply patches on the body where LP’s action is expressed very strongly. One way to confirm this is to DNA test the horse for all the known “paint” pattern mutations - but truly, there is no need if the spot(s) are typical snowball spots. One can tell by visual comparison what is probably occurring, and save a pile of $$! Here are some phenotype-based observations that support the classification of snowball spots as “appaloosa specific” patterns, and not “paint” markings. White spots caused by frame overo, splashed white or tobiano all tend to have crisp,

Tobiano white spotting always crosses the spine, and involves the legs, usually all four...

Snowball spots don’t look like this - they have roany, soft edges. While it is true that some sabino-type spotting patterns have softer, roany edges, the spots are not round, as they are in the case of snowball spots. This is an important difference, as is the location of these spots. Also - the horse you posted a picture of doesn’t show any white leg markings at all - one could not possibly categorize it as having extensive sabino patterning!

To illustrate, here’s a picture of a Tennessee Walking Horse with sabino spotting (probably sabino-1):

Stacking the odds of colour in your favour Appaloosa Project videos These must-see seminars were developed by the Appaloosa Project in conjunction with Sportaloosa International and are free to view for all Sportaloosa members.

Part one In this part, you’ll learn about the ‘appaloosa’ gene LP, its physical characteristics and how it’s inherited.

As you can see, this TWH has a lot of leg and face white, and its side spots are NOT round!

Finally, the location of snowball spots is not typical of any known “paint” spotting patterns. Snowballs are usually on the side of the body, and while frame overo spots are expressed on the side, they are neither round nor fuzzy edged...

Part two This part deals with pattern genes and the role they play in producing appaloosa coat patterns.

Though we do not know the specific conditions that cause them, snowball spots are likely produced by some sort of modifier - either genetic or environmental. Response courtesy Sheila Archer - the Appaloosa Project www.appaloosaproject.info

Part three The final part covers the relationship between Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB) and the LP gene, including tips for managing CSNB in affected appaloosa horses.

Ric O’Lena x Cayuse Skip N On Ice by Skip’s Supreme N/N for HYPP, Herda & PSSM1

Ice’s pedigree is full of names to brag about and he is a looker to boot. Being a Palomino fewspot, we expect Ice will produce loads of colour including dilutes in a full range of coat patterns. Blessed with a stunningly thick, wavy mane & tail, Ice really looks like a fairytale horse when all scrubbed up. He’s quick on his feet and can turn on a dime. Ice is now freshly broken and is showing promise for numerous sports including reining, cutting and campdrafting. Ice has a kind, gentle nature and a relaxed, sensible disposition. He is handled by the whole family and is an absolute pleasure to own.
