Summary

18 Carcaraia Gianni Guidotti 20 Gigi Squisio pothole, the third way Giampaolo Mariannelli, Mario Cecchi, Alessio Augugliaro, Paolo Castellani 27 Among the hard stones and the grass one Chimera Loris Santalmasi, Stefano Del Testa, Simona Marioti, Marco Lunardi After the important explorations carried out by the Speleological Group of Florence in twenty years of research in Carcaraia karst area (Monte Tambura, Alpi Apuane, Lucca), cavers from other groups have achieved new important results in the same karst area. The Speleological Union of Prato has explored a new cave, named Gigi-Squisio, which has become another low entrance of the Saragato – Aria Ghiaccia Complex, connecting to it in three distinct points and adding over 7 kilometers of passages; now the Carcaraia Complex is over 35 kilometers of spatial development and 1125 m deep. At the same time the Garfagnana Speleo Group CAI did a review the “Buca del Selcifero”, a little cave discovered in the ’80s by others cavers. Passing beyond a narrow point, the cave has become the fifth -1000 m in the Carcaraia area and thanks to two years of explorations it reached almost 8 km of development. It is important to remark that the ground waters of the two caves (Abisso Chimera and Carcaraia Complex) feed different springs in two different valleys (Frigido spring and Equi spring) even if the entrance of the two caves is very close and on the same mountain side.

36 Alburni Exploration Team in Grava del Campo Francesco Maurano, Umberto Del Vecchio, Claudio Pastore The Speleological Federations of Campania and Puglia have decided to join together their efforts to explore and document the Alburni Mts, one of the most important karstic areas of South Italy, located in Campania region. This new organization is named Alburni Exploration Team. During the last summer (2010) several cavers from different clubs carried out two exploring camps in Alburni Mts. A new branch has been discovered in the “Grava dei Vitelli”, while in the “Grava del Campo” a brief free climb has allowed an important exploration, that has brought the cave to 403 meters depth and 1140 meters of development.

46 Exploring Phou Nonglouang Michele Varin, Marc Faverjon The Khammouane Province (Central Laos) is one of the most interesting karst area in South-East Asia. The Khammouane 2010 expedition took place from February 13rd to March 6th in the Boulapha district, Eastern Khammouane, focusing on the Phou Nonglouang massif. This area was first sketched out by a French teams in 1996 and 1998, but the inner part of the Phou Nonglouang massif was never been visited by cavers before. The karst, which is part of the Hin Nammo National Biodiversity Conservation Area, is really interesting from a speleological and natural point of view. The Phou Nonglouang massif is extremely karstified, featuring structures and landscapes similar to the “tsingy”, and the karst seems to be very fragmented.

54 The Exploration of Cueva Palacios inside the Naica mine Marc Beverly, Paolo Forti A new cave has been recently discovered in Naica (Chihuahua, Mexico). Like all the others, this cave has no natural entrance and was intercepted by a drill hole. Its exploration was extremely complex due to its high temperature and humidity and the presence of very narrow passages. The cave is actually the largest within this Mine but it hosts no giant gypsum crystals because it was already above the thermal water at the time of their deposition.

58 Mandhip Khol-Python Caves complex Rosario Ruggieri, Iolanda Galletti, Jayant Biswas, Riccardo Orsini, Gianni Gianninoto, Elisa Marletta, Carmelo D’Avola In December 2007 the Ragusa CIRS, invited by and in cooperation with the National Cave Research & Protection Organization of Raipur (Chhattisgarh State, India), carried out explorative and morphological studies of the Mandhip Khol-Python Cave complex, located in the forestry protected area of the Rajnadgaon district a few kilometers from the Thakurtola village. The karst cave system consists of an upper level originated essentially along NE-SW and NNW-SSE fracture systems, subsequently connected through a NE-SW structure with an independent karst system, at a lower level, originated predominantly along bedding planes. The speleogenesis controlled by various structural elements has manifested itself as having different morphologies in the two levels. In fact, fracture-controlled vadose passages prevail in the upper level, while water flow along the bedding planes in the lower level has caused morphologies characterized by wide but low passages. The studied system constitutes an interesting and particular example of karst morphologies developed in a lenticular limestone formation within phyllite rocks of Pre-Cambrian metamorphic age.
