WHAT IS BIG QUESTIONS? Big Questions is a debate format in which high school and middle school students will grapple with complex worldview questions. They debate both sides of a topic determined at the beginning of the school year. Schools are eligible to earn thousands of dollars by facilitating Big Questions debates. This past year, Big Questions debate events occurred in more than 40 states, with 20,000 students competing for $20,000 in scholarships awarded at the 2019 National Speech & Debate Tournament.

Big Questions is an accessible debate format that can be added to your tournament, held during your classroom period, or even done internally among your team. The Big Questions format involves two opposing sides debating a topic concerning the intersection of science, philosophy, and religion. Students can choose to compete individually or with a partner. Competitors are assigned a side, present the case, engage in rebuttal, and participate in question periods.
EARN MEMBERSHIP THROUGH BIG QUESTIONS Due to the demand for the Big Questions grant, only NSDA members will be eligible to receive funding. If you currently are a non-member school, you can use part of your Big Questions grant to cover the cost of membership!

The 2019 National Tournament took us to the heat and hospitality of Dallas, Texas, and it was an incredible week of competition, inspiration, and connection. In this special issue of Rostrum, we recap the highlights of the week and celebrate our award winners!
ELECTED MEMBERS
At the start of the National Awards Assembly, our National Student of the Year finalists told the audience, “It will take our collective voices to change the world,” and to me, that was the theme of the week. Each year, the tournament serves as a powerful reminder of how the skills students learn in speech and debate empower them to be changemakers, advocates, and future leaders of our world. We honor our incredible student award winners, beginning on page 14, for their efforts. Whether you joined us in person, tuned in to the livestream, or are just flipping through these pages, I hope you take a minute to celebrate the power of student voices. We owe much of the week’s success to the hard work and incredible hospitality of our local hosts, many of whom were hosting their record fourth National Tournament. I wish to congratulate the entire host committee on a job well done. Meet this incredible group on page 32. Finally, thank you to the coaches, parents, chaperones, and tournament officials who made this week possible and to the communities and families back home who provided advice and encouragement to our student competitors all year long. Without your support, none of this would be possible. The 2020 National Tournament takes us on a new adventure to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I hope to see you there!

Tournament Registration and Expo As coaches completed registration, students checked out the National Tournament Expo on Sunday where they had the opportunity to reaffirm the Code of Honor, sign a special banner, and receive a free Honor the Code button. Attendees shopped the NSDA Store and visited with colleges, universities, and other vendors. The NSDA also facilitated conversations about issues of inclusion in the speech and debate community at the African American/Black, Hispanic/ Latinx, LGBT+, Womxn, and Asian American Coaches’ Caucuses.

WEDNESDAY High School Main Event Semifinals and Supplemental Events • Middle School Competition Middle school teams registered Tuesday evening for the Middle School National Tournament, presented by Summit Debate, and arrived Wednesday morning eager to start their first round. Meanwhile, main debate competition continued as many high school students moved on to their supplemental events: Commentary, Expository, Extemporaneous Debate, Poetry Reading, or Prose Reading. After main speech event semifinals during the day, competitors waited with anticipation to learn who would advance to the final rounds. After the postings went up, teams cheered and posed for photos as they geared up for the ultimate challenge: owning the room to be named national champion at the largest academic competition in the world!

William Woods Tate, Jr. National Student of the Year Six finalists participated in an interview process with the national panel of judges who selected the 2019 William Woods Tate, Jr., National Student of the Year, one of the most prestigious individual student honors awarded by the National Speech & Debate Association. Joanna Bai representing the Nebraska District was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Richard Bitner in honor of Sharon Porter and $1,000 from the NSDA and will represent the Association in various public capacities throughout the 2019-2020 academic year. The Circle of Champions represents the best of the best in our activity. Join us in congratulating our 2019 national champions!
The National Speech & Debate Tournament marks the capstone of speech and debate activities for more than 150,000 members across the country. To attend, students must qualify at one of the Association’s 112 district tournaments or through one of our eight international qualifying programs. The student competitors represent the best and brightest young people across the United States and the globe. The National Debate & Speech Tournament has been held across the country since 1931, and today is the largest academic competition in the world. Each year, more than 4,500 high school students compete in a week-long competition to determine the most prestigious title in high school academics: national champion.
