Welcome... to the Spring edition of What’s On in South Derbyshire and The National Forest Amid rolling English countryside dotted with picturesque villages you will find so much to enjoy; from historic houses and gardens, to meandering rivers and canals, to archery and snowboarding. All set in the heart of The National Forest, Britain’s most ambitious environmental project. Linking the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood, more than eight million trees have already been planted. The woodland is being created on a scale not seen for more than a thousand years, creating stunning landscapes and wildlife habitats. Come and enjoy it this season.

Highlights... Spring is here and now is the time to get out and enjoy it in South Derbyshire with a great line up of events… Celebrate Easter with egg hunts at Calke Abbey, Elvaston Castle, Highfields Happy Hens and Rosliston Forestry Centre. Indulge in unique shopping experiences, with a wedding fair in Swadlincote town centre, a craft show at Calke Abbey, and locally-produced food & drink at Swadlincote farmers’ market. Try a new experience, with orienteering, bread making, astronomy, ballroom dancing, winetasting, kite flying, djembe drumming, photography and many more on offer. Uncover the connection between Swadlincote and the Eygptian explorers who discovered Tutankhamun with some great family activities. Enjoy the arts with the Bearded Theory and Back to the 80s/90s music festivals at Catton, plus Astonbury, Bandstand Busk at Mercia Marina and Arts in Willington. As Spring blooms take in the Flower Festival at Ticknall, Well Dressing at Etwall and NGS open gardens throughout the area. Look forward to the major events of the season with the Festival of Leisure and the Festival of Transport in Swadlincote, the BASC Gamekeepers’ Fair and Horse Trials at Catton Park, and the County Show at Elvaston. With the Swadlincote Townscape project getting underway, learn about history on your doorstep with a town centre heritage walk and a chance to have a go at brickmaking. Enjoy great performances in the great outdoors, as The Glade at Rosliston stages The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Dance in the Forest. Join the Sainsbury’s ‘Waste less, Save more’ challenge with lots of events and ideas to help reduce food waste.

A Different Flavour of the Forest – 5 Mile Walk

The exhibition in The Kiln will cover the 1850s to the 1950s depicting life in Swadlincote, Gresley and surrounding areas with the use of newspaper articles, advertisements and photographs collated and displayed by Chloe Marriott.

A warm and friendly welcome is offered to women of all ages, so please come along to a meeting and make new friends. We offer a varied programme of speakers and entertainment, a lunch club and arrange outings. The first three meetings are free so you can see if you are interested in joining. We meet on the 3rd Tuesday each month (except August).

Please bring your telescope or binoculars with you if you have them. Wrap up well to be ready to go outside to observe the night sky after the meeting. Even if the sky is cloudy, each meeting contains a wide variety of material on all aspects of astronomy, observing, photographing and sketching the night sky.

Tingtang Theatre Company presents this interactive show in a fun, pantomime style, especially made for young audiences. The audience becomes Mr McGregor’s allotment and Peter may need his allotment friends to help him escape from Mr McGregor’s angry clutches. Gates open 15 minutes before each show. Performance lasts approx. 45 minutes.

Heartbreak Productions return to The Glade with a performance based on David Walliam’s hilarious, action-packed and touching novel Ratburger. Doors open at 3pm so bring a picnic.
