GREETINGS FROM MAYOR RICK GOLDRING On behalf of the City of Burlington, welcome to the 2017 Sound of Music Festival. The Sound of Music Festival celebrates the best and brightest in music for all ages, drawing hundreds of thousands people each year from near and far to our beautiful waterfront and downtown core. This is a special year for the festival as it partners with the City of Burlington for a Canada 150 celebration event on June 11. We invite you to celebrate your patriotism with us. Their 1994 release Smash remains the highest-selling album of all-time on an independent label.

"We've got so many hits on this new record it's ridiculous" says Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell. Harwell oughta know a thing or two about hit songs. His band has charted more hits than a World War || battleship. Smash Mouth, the band that's given you such memorable songs as "All-Star," "Walkin' on the Sun," and "I'm a Believer," is back for more with their vibrant new CD "MAGIC".

LOCAL ROOTS

Drawn together in early 2003 by their love of music and the i mpetus to forge their own musical path, The Reason first caught the attention of audiences and music critics across Canada with their killer live shows and the release of their debut album Ravenna (2004). The band's undeniable growing songwriting prowess led them down a seemingly new musical path brimming with a more multidimensional sound with the release of their sophmore album Things Couldn't Be Better in 2007. In August 2010, Hamilton's favourite sons released their third album and found much success with singles such as The Longest Highway Home.

8:15 WINTERSLEEP The Great Detachment, Wintersleep’s sixth LP and first with Dine Alone Records, is very much an introspective work, both conceptually and thematically. Of course, it delivers a welcome dose of the atmospheric, entrancing alt-rock for which the band has become known – the beautifully orchestrated arrangements anchored by haunting, almost hypnotic vocal melodies; however, the way those arrangements were approached and the poetry they relay are very much the product of some self-(re) discovery. Wintersleep headlined Festival D'été in Quebec City, BC's Pemberton Festival, Halifax's Gridlock Festival, Edmonton's Sonic Festival, Calgary's X Fest and played Winnipeg's Interstellar Rodeo, among others.

East Coast-bred, Toronto-based rockers The Trews who, since the April 2014 release of their universally acclaimed self-titled fifth studio album, have scarcely stopped to take a breath. This summer, The Trews perform coast to coast, hitting multiple prestigious festivals along the way. Smart money says the newly revamped and re-energized Trews will – in typical Trews workhorse fashion - use any available downtime to contemplate their next album. “We certainly have options… maybe issuing previously unreleased material. And we’ve got to write a bunch of new songs. There’s lots to do between now and the end of the year. But we’re ready.” thetrewsmusic.com

7:00 GRANDSON

9:30 USS

As Grandson, Jordan Benjamin combines bluesy hard rock guitars, trap-influenced beats, and lyrics about the hardships of everyday life. Benjamin was born in Englewood, New Jersey, but he grew up in Toronto in a musical family, and was raised on classic rock, hip-hop, dancehall, and other genres. After teaching himself to play guitar and piano, he started beatboxing and freestyle rapping, and began recording demos of songs while a student at McGill University in Montreal. Benjamin relocated to Los Angeles and worked on tracks with producers Kevin Hissink and HighxLand, and the single “Bills” was released in September of 2016.

It’s hard to put your thumb on Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker. Ours is admittedly a world where things are constantly being examined, labeled, named, and methodically grouped neatly in one place or the other. When something comes along that won’t be put under a thumb, what then? No, chaos doesn’t consume the earth, but it does often leave people wondering where to place the duo with a sound that is equal parts science and art, a convergence of gentle melody and driving beat. Like a science experiment set to music, what they do melts down acoustic rock, EDM, Dub, Hip-Hop, Orchestral, and Pop transforming it into an entirely new element.

Born and raised in Southern Ontario, Rich Cloke has traded in his hockey skates in favour of cowboy boots, and arrives on the scene with the release of his debut album, Northern Skies. Rich's passion for songwriting has led him to write eight heartfelt original compositions. His straightforward narrative lends itself well to songs about what he knows, what he's experienced, and where he's headed. Channelling influences from traditional and modern country with hints of rock and pop, Northern Skies delivers danceable and memorable tunes that are sure to stick in your head. richclokemusic.com

It's a compliment that Jacob Moon keeps receiving from the musicians who have inspired him since he started as a singersongwriter out in Hamilton, Ontario. Artists like Rush, Marillion, Gordon Lightfoot have taken a shine to Moon's renditions of their songs and have lavished him praise and a spotlight that has gained him international attention. SATURDAY, JUNE 17 1:00 3:1

LOCAL ROOTS

3:1 was formed two years ago in Burlington, Ontario at their high school Dr Frank J. Hayden. It started off with Andre Cusson (guitar), Daniel Cunningham (bass) and Daniel Hinds (drums) when Emily Phongphilack (vocalist) walked in listening to their lunch time jam session one day at school. Since then they have been creating original Alternative Funk music and recently won first place in their local YMCA Battle of The Bands competition. 3:1 wants their audience to let loose and feel as though they are having fun on stage with them. facebook.com/wearethreetoone

2:15 THE LAZYS Meet THE LAZYS, one of Australia’s best and most talked about live rock and roll bands. THE LAZYS don’t sweet-talk and they offer not an ounce of glamour. They are gritty, loud, edgy and dangerous. They always deliver a fistful of rock, as they demonstrate on their sizzling new selftitled album. The Australian rock audience demands honesty, energy, and the ability to deliver the goods. Those traits are also valued by Canadian rock fans, so it is no surprise that they’re taking to THE LAZYS faster than a great white shark to an Aussie surfer.

Stage 3:45 BLEEKER Bleeker are steadily building a rock solid name for themselves in their native Canada. But despite an altered band name and a slightly revamped lineup, Bleeker's aesthetic and work ethic remain as sturdy and as unshakable as ever. Musically, Bleeker crosspollinate the swagger of The Rolling Stones with psych-tinged groove, and therefore they fall among Royal Blood, Struts, The Black Keys, and Jet in the alt rock spectrum. But what sets them apart is an ever-sosubtle current of loose cannon danger that courses through every riff, note, and melody of their latest album Erase You. bleekerofficial.com

Drawing on a wide swath of rock, jazz and R&B influences ranging from Etta James and Aretha Franklin to Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke and the late Amy Winehouse – artists “who let you hear the soul in their voices” – Laura noticed a theme developing as she and Bigas narrowed her growing catalog of tunes to nine perfectly honed tracks. She says the theme of Dirty Cheat can be summed up in three songs: the sly and sexy “Sweet Escape”, the dreamy, mystical Tom Waits inspired “Death Row”, and the trippy, seductively sly title track, about raining hell down upon a cheating boyfriend.

"Currently, it seems like there are only two types of Canadian singersongwriters: those who strive to sound like Jeff Buckley and those who strive to sound like Leslie Feist. Terra Lightfoot has crafted a third, more interesting option: none of the above." – Exclaim! Magazine! Whether you’re talking about her as a songwriter, guitarist or vocalist, one thing is indisputable: Hamilton’s Terra Lightfoot is a ferocious talent. Her songs tap into the raw emotion of hearts supercharged by love, lust, loneliness and temptation. Her playing melds expert finger-picking and distorted, hook-heavy melodies.
