Love Yourself: Body Image and Confidence

How do you feel when you look at yourself naked in front of a mirror? Are you critical and wish you were built like a Victoria Secrets model? Do you wish you had a smaller waist, narrower hips and fuller breasts? You're not alone. Many women in my generation struggle with their image when they look in the mirror. They long for more youthful days before gravity and bearing children made their marks on our bodies. Our brains have been assaulted by a barrage of media messages defining what beauty is to the fashion industry. Their warped perception has bled over into our living rooms and it is influencing us and our daughters. It is coming between how we feel about ourselves and how we think our partners feel about our bodies. It is damaging our self-esteem and preventing us from fulling embracing and loving ourselves just as we are. For years, a skewed body image played a pivotal role in how comfortable I felt during sex. I would feel ashamed of the body parts that I didn’t think fit my partner's idea of beauty. I was blinded by what the media had to say and allowed myself to believe that their idea of beauty is what every man desired. Full figures were out, tall and thin was in! My negative image played a part in my overall self-image. I deceived myself into thinking I could love myself on the inside and ignore the package I was wrapped in. What I discovered is this belief caused me to hide parts of myself inside and outside of the bedroom. I honestly didn't want to be seen clothed anymore than I did naked. I convinced myself that no one would take me seriously if I didn’t look like a model or news anchor! Body image doesn’t just affect our intimacy levels and sexual satisfaction, it also rears its ugly heads in our businesses. When we don’t want to be seen, we hold back and play small. We reduce our level of visibility and miss out on opportunities that are right under our noses. Loving ourselves starts in our mind. We have to take control of our thoughts and rewire our brains to belief our new truth. These days I love my body just as it is. The camera is my friend once again. I feel confident when I’m all dressed up, but I am also confident on camera without makeup and hair

Here are some tips you can take to take ownership of your body image and build confidence in who you are and the impact you want to make...just as you are! Stop self-objectifying. Stop comparing yourself to photo shopped images of women in magazine ads. Accept the fact they are not real images and release the need to compete with a facade of a woman’s image. Create your own definition of beauty. Beauty radiates from the inside out. When you truly love yourself, your skin glows and your eyes sparkle. There is an element about yourself that attracts others to want what you have. Control your self-talk. Be kind to yourself. Choose your words wisely. Your brain knows when you’re bullshitting yourself. Change your brain chemistry by tapping into your brain’s pleasure center with words that make you feel good. Practice mindfulness. Be in the moment. Love yourself now and lovingly nurture the parts of you that need attention. Embrace the totality of you. Design a sustainable self-care routine. Self-care is one of the most important ways you can feel confident and powerful. Putting yourself at that top of your “to do” list adds value to who you believe you are and how you should be treated. Empower yourself to operate at your highest level without feel apologetic. Give up comparisons. Be affirming to your body. Show gratitude for what your body does for you daily. Appreciate beauty of those around you, but don’t get caught up wishing you had their body type or bone structure. Embrace the gift of your body without hesitation or envy. Get real. Share your inner thoughts in your journal. Be real and raw. Take ownership of how you feel and accept responsibility for choosing how you feel. Enjoy the process of creating your unique personal brand of beauty. Poor body image plagues both men and women; women are just more vocal about it. Give yourself permission to be vulnerable and talk about it. Open up a dialog with your partner to discuss your insecurities. Listen to what they have to say and receive their love and support. Confidence shows up on the outside, but growing it starts on the inside. Shy away from the “fake it till you make it” mentality. That’s just a smoke screen that holds you captive to small minded thinking. Take the risk and commit to letting go of limiting beliefs and commit to a life based on authentic self-love and self-care.

Make 2019 your best year yet! Choose to be empowered from the boardroom to the bedroom...you deserve it!

New Year, New You make-up tips: Happy Nude Year!

Hey beauties and Happy New Year to you all! Or should I say Happy Nude Year 😄 – because this season is all about nude make up. Think dewy bases and monochrome eyes and lips and you’re there! And the best bit is that these lush neutral shades are flattering for all eye and skin colours – it’s simply about choosing the right tones to highlight your natural beauty. So this month, I’m going to share with you some top tips on how to get that gorgeous no make up make up look in minutes! Firstly, it’s all about the base… For the perfect fresh-faced glow, opt for a lightweight BB cream (foundation and moisturiser in one!). These are great to even out your skintone and leave you with a dewy glow, while providing your skin with an extra moisture boost throughout the day. Younique’s BB Complexion Enhancer has been an absolute lifesaver for me this winter and is a must-have in my make-up bag! Naked eyes Light and nude eyeshadows instantly make tired eyes look brighter - perfect when the mornings are still dark and you need that extra boost! Even a simple matte champagne shadow on your lids will leave you looking more awake on those days when coffee alone is not enough!

My favourite shades this season are delicate peach, pale copper and bronze, soft ivories and rich caramels – perfect for all eye colours, so they are super versatile. There are so many ways to wear them too – here are five of my favourites.. 1. Keep it simple by applying a warm metallic bronze or copper eyeshadow to your eyelid and gently blending the colour out and up to your crease line for a gradual pop of colour. 2. Intensify the look of your eyes by applying a soft brown matte shade to your creaseline and blending out towards your brow bone. Pop a metallic champagne or matte peach on your eyelid for that barely there look. 3. Want a little bit more drama, but still nice and natural? Blend a latte brown along your creaseline, use a slightly darker soft brown on the outer corner of your eye and finish with an eyeliner flick. 4. Love a hint of shimmer? Use a soft brown along your creaseline and on the inner and outer corner of your eyelid. Then with your fingertip, apply a lush ivory, champagne or bronze shimmer to the middle of your eyelid. Blend the edges with a blending brush so that the colours melt together, leaving you with a lovely spotlight effect. 5. Apply a peach nude to your eyelid then using an angled eyeliner brush, line along your lash line with a deep brown shadow and gently smudge for a natural, smokey effect. Add an ivory shimmer to the inner corner of your eye at your tear duct, and under your brow bone for a subtle highlight. Finish with a couple of coats of Epic mascara for perfect, long, luscious lashes every time!! So, you have your base and your eyes sorted, but what about the lips? With so many nude shades to choose from, it’s tricky to know which one is right for you. Go too dark and it may be altogether a bit too vampy, go too light - more vampire! But taking your skintone into account will determine which nudes are most flattering… For fair skin with warm tones – go for nudes with a pink or warm peach undertone. For light skin with olive tones – choose a light pink or beige. For medium skin tones – opt for a golden beige or a deep peach. For dark skin tones – dark beige/tan colours look best. Also, look at the natural colour of your lips as this will give you a guide when choosing a nude lip product. If your lips have a red or pink tone, go for a nude with pink or peach tone. If your lips have a brown tint, opt for a beige/golden nude. And there you have it – the perfect barely there ‘I just rolled out of bed like this’ look in a flash! UNCHAIN 11

TOP TIP – to complete your monochrome look, add a little soft peach eyeshadow to the apples of your cheeks and blend for a hint of colour. Or apply a few dots of your nude liquid lipstick along your cheekbones and blend for a light glow that ties in with the rest of your look! TOP TIP – light coloured shimmer eyeshadows also make perfect highlighters. Apply them under the brow bone, along the top of your cheekbones and on your cupid’s bow for a subtle but polished finish. TOP TIP – for a super quick all-in-one monochrome look, use a Splash liquid lipstick on your eyes, lips and cheeks! TOP TIP – after applying your nude lippy, add a clear lipgloss to the middle of your lips to make your lips look plumper TOP TIP – bronzers are great for no make up looks too. Pop it on your eyelids and blend towards your brow bone, apply on you contour areas (along your hairline, cheekbones and jawline), then apply a clear lipgloss and pat bronzer on top for effortless glam! Super simple to do and looking gorgeous in minutes! All products featured are available on my website: www.youniqueproducts.com/EliseMcDonald

The Power of Failure How to get over the feeling of failure? By Maria C. Krause Mindset and Business Coach. Founder and Owner of UNCHAIN your inner strength

Failure… Just a word, with so much power and strength behind it. The thought of this word and what does to us, makes us cringe and stops us from doing what we really want to do. So often we give the fear of failing too much power. We don’t want to let ourselves down and we often are so afraid of what others might say which inevitably fills us with doubt and makes us feel weak in our conviction.

When we think about failure, we can’t help but associate it with thinking and believing that we are not good or capable enough of achieving what we have our heart set on. We tend to overanalyze a situation and think of every different scenario where we could have done something differently. That’s where our minds tend to focus the most and we think and overthink until our heads explode.

The truth is, what we choose to do in that moment and time, is actually the best option. We followed our instincts and we went for it, no matter what the consequences were… and life chose to give us a different outcome from the one we expected.

I have learned a thing or a thousand about failure throughout my life, and you want to know why? FAILURE IS INEVITABLE! No matter how we go about things and try to make the right decision or wait until everything is “perfect” sometimes life simply has other plans for us. Life is pushing us, challenging us, and is saying without words, “You got this! Keep going!’. If we don’t learn from our failures, how else are we going to learn what’s good or bad for ourselves? We can’t do it according to someone else’s experience, their life is completely different to yours. You are very different from the next person, what works for one, might not work for someone else and vice versa. It’s only in the actions that we do everyday; by doing, by going out there and making it happen that we learn what works for us and what doesn’t. Who cares if the first, second, third or thousand times doesn’t work, you know in your gut that you have what it takes.

UNCHAIN 15

When I first started my business and things didn’t work the way I wanted, I tried to replace the word failure with something less scary, like ‘lesson’ or ‘evolving.’ In doing that I was trying to minimize the effect failing had on me. Now, I have grown more confident and have become more focused on where I’m going and how I can help. I am thankful for all of my failures because without them I wouldn’t have learned the skills to coach others on their journey. I have been there and done it, I know how to solve it. The word failure and I have now become the best of friends. Success is in all the things that we do, even if the outcome isn’t necessarily what we are hoping for. Each chance we take teaches us to improve and become better and better.

So don’t be afraid. The more you reach for your dreams and the more you try, the closer you’ll get and when you get there, you’ll find a new more exciting challenge to face and learn from.

Just keep going, you’ve come this far, there’s no turning back now!

Love, Light, BE Maria C. Krause. Mindset and Business Coach.

The interview with kick ass entrepreneur

KATRINA R UTH

Katrina Ruth (previously Kat Loterzo) is an entrepreneur and writer based on Australia's sunny Gold Coast. When she isn't furiously unleashing her true message, she is running her multi-million dollar online coaching business as an entertainer, speaker and success mentor to 'the crazy ones'. With 50+ eBooks (mostly best sellers), over a decade in online biz and, several hundred product and program launches under her belt Katrina is known as a ‘Content Queen’ who just doesn’t stop. She believes that you CAN have it all, on your terms, so long as you’re willing to get honest with yourself about what you’re really here to do in the world.

UNCHAIN 17

UNCHAIN: Kat, you started selling at a young age? What was the feeling you got when you made your first dollar? KAT: I don't recall that first dollar in particular, I was always hustling from at least as young as 3 ... but I do remember always just thinking 'this is how it should be' and loving the hustle. I would go door to door with lemons and oranges from my grandparents yard or with handmade cards or wild flower bunches from the field near our house and I just expected that I would make money from it and that it would work. And it always did. UNCHAIN: Would you mind sharing with us, what was the crucial point in your life where you decided you want to become a coach and help others step into their full power? KAT: I never decided to be a coach as such. I don't consider myself a coach or label according to any particular thing. Coaching is just one of the aspects of what I do do and I first felt drawn to doing that and more when I was 11 years old and read my first Tony Robbins book.

UNCHAIN: You have been coaching both, women and men, throughout your career... Do you find there's a difference while coaching one sex or the other? KAT: A little bit. A lot of my high level clients will talk with me as much about their personal life as they do their businesses and obviously I have a women's perspective with all that and there may not be the same level of comfort for frankness with a man. But I don't exclusively work with women and have had/have a number of men who follow me and work with me. UNCHAIN: The reason why I ask this, is because we see a lot of new female entrepreneurs that only serve female... What's your opinion on that? KAT: It's important to figure out and know who your perfect soulmate client is. For most females, that will in turn be a female and that's who you focus on when you're messaging. It doesn't mean that the message won't reach and be just as powerful for a man tho.

UNCHAIN: You are an absolute Queen when it comes to create consistent content, not only for your programs, but also for your blogs and books.... Where do you get all this inspiration from? KAT: I read and journal almost every day and, allowing time to expand my mind and let the message to come through makes it easy to then unleash powerful content of my own.

UNCHAIN 18

UNCHAIN: You lost everything in one point in your life, how did that feel? And what made you keep pushing through and building your life and business again? KAT: It was hard. But I always just kept pushing forward. I did whatever I could possibly do to make it work (selling my home, handbags, investments etc.) and to keep investing in myself and my dream until eventually the tide started turning. I also had to deal a lot of money blocks that I personally had had AND the tide really only started turning when I threw my hands up and decided to just be completely authentically me and bet on myself 100% . UNCHAIN: A lot of people are afraid of failure and that stops them from at least trying... What would you like to tell people who are afraid of trying? KAT: Journal it out, ask yourself and answer - How are you benefiting from your current situation? What is the positive result of you embracing the fear? How do those benefits and results compare to what you would get and what life would look like if you actually embraced the dream instead?

UNCHAIN: Have you ever had someone telling you that your dreams and goals were unreal and crazy? If yes, what was your reaction? KAT: Yes, of course. Countless times. These days I recognize that more often than not, they're just triggered by it and using me as a mirror to reflect what they have fear about attaining in their own life.

UNCHAIN: Have you worked with a coach yourself when you first started? What kind of training did you do? KAT: Relevant to business - when I first started, there were no success coaches or the multitude of online courses that there are now. If there had been, I would have found got one! But it was a blessing in disguise in many ways because I wasn't as tuned in to alignment and I may have been swayed by other peoples 'rules', guidelines and strategies. Instead I just had to rely on doing what I liked, being consistent, doing the work and throwing things at the internet - even if it didn't look pretty or wasn't perfectly planned. I have however been reading mindset and motivational books since I was a young adult and drew inspiration from writers who I discovered online. Relevant to my personal life - I have had life coaches since I was 17 :)

UNCHAIN: What was the most frighting thing you had to do to get out of your comfort zone and create the success that you now have? KAT: Walking away from my whole life when I was in my mid twenties aka the job that I had at the time, my marriage at the time etc. UNCHAIN 19

UNCHAIN: You always seek ways to grow and empower yourself... Do you believe that's part of our journey in life? KAT: It's as essential as breathing.

UNCHAIN :Kat, you just released a new app and I fucking love it! I can have you with wherever I go! LOL! Can you tell us more about the idea behind the app? KAT: It's something I have always wanted to do and it was actually ready a while ago, I just forgot to release it :D I love it too! You can check it out here > http://bit.ly/2yHp0Dv

UNCHAIN: What is a day in the life of Katrina Ruth like? KAT: Wake up around 5/6am, read a little, journal and write my blog. Workout. Breakie or school run. Hair blown out while I answer messages from my clients/team and look over my email. Write up some program content. Get my nails done or a massage. Have another workout. Livestream/pick up the kids. Have some fun with them. Dinner/bed for the kids. Then I often livestream into one of my paid groups/do a little content. Read before bed :)

UNCHAIN:Kat, if you can share something with our audience who's is still on the first steps of creating the life and business they always dreamed of... What would you like to share with them? KAT: Don't wait for everything to be perfect or for all the boxes to be ticked before you start sharing your message. Your message/your art/the core of what you are passionate about is everything. Start there and then let everything else just fall into place along the way.

UNCHAIN: Kat, once again, I would like to thank you for sharing your love in everything you do, and for being an absolutely power of a woman. KAT:Thank you!

HOLISTIC

WHOLE HEALTH COACH

Founder and Owner of Blissfully Aligned and Krazy and fit "ish"

Hi! I’m Jen, Holistic Whole Health Coach and I’m here to help women become the best, happiest & healthiest versions of themselves on the daily. My hope is that every woman I am able to help will in turn affect those around them to do the same, creating a ripple effect.

I see so many women strive to lose weight but cannot succeed or cannot maintain the loss long term, especially this time of year. I see so many women, who are uncomfortable in their bodies. It’s not that they are incapable of losing the weight and keeping it off, it’s that they don’t have all the tools necessary for success! Weight loss is encompasses more than just fitness & nutrition. It is also about mindset, self confidence, self love & self care; it’s about the WHOLE HEALTH of our body, mind & spirit. I have an aversion to the word “diet”, I really do. I don’t even like the term “weight loss." These terms imply restriction and who wants to live life restricting what they can eat? Not me!

This

should be about gaining health, not losing weight! How about we refer to it as a lifestyle change, because that’s what it really is. If you go about this journey via restriction, you will be miserable. We need to stop punishing our bodies for not being the way we want. We need to start loving ourselves exactly how we are in this moment and go from there. We need to find what works for us on a personal level.

You see, what’s good and works for me, may not work for you. You may be sensitive to gluten or be allergic to tomatoes or have knee problems. Many times we think we’re failing and give up, when in fact, all we need to do is make a few adjustments. We’re bloated because of what we are nourishing our bodies with, or our portions are off or we’re not drinking enough water.

The bottom line is, we should be striving to be the healthiest & happiest version of ourselves. We should strive to feel comfortable and happy with who we are. When we start looking at the journey with a different eye, things begin to change and fall into place. We need to acknowledge that healthy looks different on everyone.

So for this new year,, how about you pay close attention to your HEALTH, and see what you can modify to lead a more energized life! It doesn’t have to be earth shattering! Small steps in the right direction, when done consistently, will lead to massive change!

UNCHAIN 24

Here are a few tips to regain control of your health:

Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in water per day (ounces) Eat 3 home cooked meals a week Put aside 1 processed food you typically eat Eat fruits & vegetables EVERY day Move your body at least 15 minutes every day Go out and get fresh air Look at yourself in the mirror each day and give yourself 1 compliment Every morning be grateful you had the privilege of waking up, then make the best of what you were given!

You see, it’s not difficult, but it takes work, dedication, and time! Becoming the healthiest version of ourselves is a journey. I want to teach not only women, but every young girl out there that they are beautiful exactly the way they are. We are all unique and quirky and BEAUTIFUL! I want young girls to look up to their moms and see women who strive to be healthy & happy and strong, not skinny. I want to create a movement so big that society values HEALTH, WHOLE HEALTH; mind, body and soul more than they value your waist size.

If you’re looking to begin your journey, I’m here to support you, motivate you and hold you accountable, but most importantly I’m here to help you find what works for you as an individual. Jen XXX

ABUNDANCE My guess is that you are no stranger to discussions about aligning your energy with what you desire or wish to manifest. And you probably hear all about how your mindset is the key. Now, you find yourself at the start of a fresh new year and you may have an extra boost of motivation to set goals, release old habits and integrate new, positive ones. There are so many methods to choose from, right?! As a Clear Beliefs Coach, the Belief Closet is one of my favorites to dis-create non-serving beliefs we have adopted through life’s experiences and replace them with the belief you want to hold the ones that serve your highest self. The yogi in me loves to record guided meditations to release emotional energy that could be holding individuals back. Some people prefer journaling, affirmations, and vision boards. While others like accountability partners, masterminds, and webinars to get them in gear. You have so many choices, explore them all to see which resonates with you as you make the transition into 2019; set new intentions, goals and resolutions. You can also begin to utilize the energy crystals and essential oils and let them aide you in your success. They support the inner and outer work you may be doing and help bring you into energetic alignment with abundance, wealth and success.

UNCHAIN 26

Let’s start essential oils, the easiest method too: Diffusing! To surround yourself with prosperity, abundance and wealth energy, diffuse: ·

5 drops Myrrh

·

5 drops Sandalwood

·

3 drops Wild orange

Myrrh is said to open our mind to receive. It enhances emotional well-being and often the higher vibe spiritual energy as well. It increases our levels of trust: trusting ourselves, trusting the process and trusting others. This energy shift helps attract more positive experiences into life. Sandalwood has been known as a prosperity oil. Along with Myrrh, it has been considered “holy” used in ceremonies and sacred rituals. It is thought to clear negative energy and the negative energy or thoughts about abundance. Wild Orange creates an instant lift in mood. It is energizing and invigorating, helping one to stay motivated and optimistic. As it is a powerful antioxidant, it may even help keep immune system strong to help keep you on track. Additionally, it is thought to help release limited thinking, fear of competition, imposter syndrome and that nasty self-talk that can cause procrastination or getting stuck. You can diffuse the three oils as suggested above or drip a few drops on tissue or cotton and keep it available anytime you could use the mental shift. Additional uses for each: You can use Myrrh for inflammation by infusing it into a cold compress You can use Sandalwood in your hair for a healthy luster You can use Wild Orange as a way to increase creativity applying a drop or two over the sacral chakra (below the naval) *As always, EO’s are safest diluted in a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. And check for all contraindications for pregnancy and allergies.

Crystal Energy: Pyrite - (otherwise known as fool’s gold) Working with the second and third chakra, it enhances will power and strength Green aventurine – this is a stone often brought into new ventures, it brings in optimism, wealth and good luck Citrine - this is more about mood and boosting and confidence, so you are optimistic and fully believe “it” is possible Moonstone - helps keep you gentle, enhancing feminine energies You can keep these crystals in your pockets, place them on your desk or close to your workspace or start your day with a meditation while holding them in your hands or lap. It is likely within days you will notice and increase in drive, determination and follow through. If you feel you could benefit from better focus, bring some Fluorite into the mix too! It is known to enhance cognitive function, comprehension and clarity of the mind. All great qualities when you are striving to reach new goals or establish new habits. Crystal Grids are also popular when it comes to abundance. If you would like to give it a whirl, it’s simple, fun and oh so pretty! Here’s how to create your own crystal grid: Pick an undisturbed location that you will call your grid’s home for a few weeks – if you have cats, like me, choose wisely, where they won’t get into it or you will be finding crystals scattered around your house. Select your intention (abundance, wealth, creativity, organization, love, etc.) Select the appropriate crystals for your intention and cleanse / clear them Cleanse the space (sage, palo santo, sound, etc.) Designing your grid (often grids have one tower in the center, a few quartz points, tumblers or rough stones set up around the grid following Sacred Geometry, such as the seed of life or flower of life pattern, just to name a few) Activate your grid it - Take a quartz crystal point from the outside stones and draw an invisible line between each stone to energetically connect each to the next Visit it often, use it as a time to evoke the feelings you will have when the experiences you desire are manifested into your life. Meditate in its presence and soak in the energy. Each week or month you can reset your grid. Start fresh with the same intention or set a brand new one.I hope this month’s tips serve you well and that this year is a beautiful one where you attract, manifest and create all that you desire! Happy New You! P.S. I am here for you, to answer any questions you may have or help you build you crystal and essential oil collection Be Well – Heather @ www.heatheradempsey.com

Artist and Designer: EMER ROBERTS

UNCHAIN 30

Emer thank you so much for being part of our online magazine! You have been doing some incredible work in the last two years and I really appreciate you sharing your talent with our beautiful tribe. UNCHAIN: Emer, you had sort of a overnight success with your business, designing jewelry, such a huge achievement. How does it feel?

EMER: Winning an award for my first collection was certainly a great beginning. I am into the third year of my business now and slowly understanding the variety of achievements one can feel with the day to day mundane successes. I thrive on those little victories and implementing those small steps get you to where you want to be. Success takes a variety of forms! It feels well earned as I am quite specific in my intention and expectation of myself. I am also realistic and I suppose cynical of the word success. I have learned a lot in this short time as a business per se. I think ‘overnight success’ is generally judged upon reflection.

UNCHAIN: Where does your inspiration come from? EMER: I am a three dimensional creature and working with my hands is a given. My background in Fine Art inspired my now absolute passion for design which I am probably more suited to, as a maker. My inspiration as a designer is to forge original design and maintain a contemporary design led approach.

UNCHAIN: There's a particular line of your designs that is all about rats, can you tell us more about it and how come you picked one of the least liked animals to inspire you in this collection?

EMER: My sculptural practice over the last fifteen years revolved mainly around the mammal and similarity between species. I recreated taxidermic hybrid species in large scale sculpture based around the Natural History museum, the circus at one point and the Church, as symbolic of institutional notions of superiority. Ten years ago, I was in the final year of my Masters when my brother chose to depart and the rat entered my work at this point. For my MFA show I reinterpreted Michelangelo’s Pieta with Child and Rat, a large rat holding a child. I continued exploring the rat, collaborating with a friend who in turn found endless meeting points with this species in her philosophical and conceptual work. We fed rat meat alongside other delightful dishes at a conceptual banquet hosted in Smock Alley. I skinned the rats for this meat and kept every part of the rat that was not eaten. As sexy as it sounds, this all inspired what became my first Wearable Biology collection. Rats and humans, as mammals, create endless dialogues with the alter ego, abhorrence, intelligence and resilience. And for me, the physical similarities.

UNCHAIN 31

UNCHAIN: The last two years have been crazy busy for you, and you have also become a mother the moment you launched your collection... How do you manage with all of it? EMER: Getting up at 5am and loving what I do. Having amazing parents that are ridiculously supportive and my partner Simon, whose working hours and mine seemed to work. And a lot of sleep deprivation that comes with the territory.

UNCHAIN: You design each and every one of your pieces yourself, how long would you say it would take you for each piece? EMER: Well, thats a fitting question as I was designing a bangle earlier and soldering about 6 pieces together. Over and over and over etc. Unsuccessfully. When I design, I work three dimensionally. Some are cast from wax and some are combined from other pieces to create new designs. Like success, time spent depends upon your head space, whether you are feeling time strained, happily consuming your work or patiently going out of your mind until that happy accident occurs.

UNCHAIN: You've been featured in some of the biggest fashion magazine, such as Vogue. May I ask, did you ever dream of this success? EMER: I generally think big and am most certainly a yes person. I think my achievements are honorable when staying true to a certain something that has authentic value. Magazines and jewellery are product based. I hate to admit that my skills fit better with design but I crave and love authentic fine art based thinking. I want to merge the two in my own processes. And yes I have every intention of continually dreaming success.

UNCHAIN: What was your first reaction when these magazines contacted you to showcase your art? Because that's what your pieces are, absolutely beautiful and unique. EMER: Reciving those first emails from Conde Nast publications to feature my jewellery was a validating and confidence boosting experience. Thank you Maria, for saying so!

UNCHAIN: Has art always been part of your life, in your family and environment? EMER: Music was essential growing up. We all had to play an instrument and learn to read music. My father is an accomplished musician, playing sax and clarinet and favouring dixieland/jazz/big band! All of my siblings are in either music, art, design, botany or complimentary medicine and healing. An interesting and encouraging mix.

UNCHAIN 32

THE EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION,

SOME OF MY FAVORITE PIECES

UNCHAIN: What is your background? Did you study at an art school? EMER: I studied Fine Art Sculpture (BA) in DIT Portland Row and went on to do my Masters in Fine Art Sculpture at NCAD. I did morning or evening classes to understand metals when I came to jewellery. I love doing short courses to up my knowledge and skill set.

UNCHAIN: If you like to share something valuable with women here who are trying to start their own business doing what they love... What would you like to share with them? EMER: Keep the faith, knuckle down, work hard and take nothing personal in business. The latter gives license for more confidence in a relaxed and learned way. Honest and diplomatic communication is a great attribute.

UNCHAIN:And finally, what is a day in the life of Emer Roberts, mompreneur like? EMER: Well, the less of my working day I share with my partner, the better our relationship. Which depicts busy days intermittent with change. No two days are the same. I have to write everything down these days and admittedly I work well under pressure.

Emer, thank you so much for sharing your love, your passion and journey to empower and inspire women who want to follow their dreams.

ANDREAH BARKER

Ghost Writer and Writing Coach

Founder and Owner of "Sadie Tells Stories" HOW I LEARNED TO LISTEN DEEPLY One of the things I love most about being a ghostwriter is that I have the opportunity to help others share their message with the world. I make it easy for my clients to achieve what can sometimes feel like an incredibly daunting undertaking, in a painless and often uplifting way. Since embarking on this new journey just over a year ago, I have learned so much, not only about others, but myself as well. I thrive on helping those I write for see the value of the lives they are living and the message they have to share. But I didn’t come to this place easily. Almost four years ago I realized that the passion I had allowed to define my entire life was draining my desire to have a positive impact in the world. I was burnt out. I was tired. I found myself crying in the park on the way to work, just picking myself up in time to make it for my morning meeting. I was failing both myself and the profession I served to grow. I knew this. It was time to go and so I made a career switch that would prove to deplete my energy even more. I thought I had made the right choice and I wasn’t willing to admit right away that I had made a mistake. When necessity finally dictated I succumb to the realization I would in fact need to find another way, I was left with a choice: sink or swim! That is how it felt to me at the time. Not one to ask for help, I grasped at straw after straw. From dog walking to VA work to Real state photography to website design to copywriting, I chased after the new, next thing like it was the life raft I thought I needed. I wasn’t wrong in trying. With each new endeavour came greater understanding. One of the most valuable lessons I will take away from this time in my life is that I had to accept help. If I stayed the course on any one of these paths I would’ve ended up exactly where I had started: exhausted, defeated, and completely lost. I’m now in a place where I lean on my network when I need them and allow others to help me see the things I don’t always see in myself. This realization has helped me to become an even better ghostwriter. Being a witness to the lives and works of others allows me an outsider’s perspective on the gifts my clients share with the world, and incorporating these things makes for an enriched experience for their reader. Helping others realize their dream of completing a book while simultaneously providing an engaging read for their audience continues to make my heart sing. I have spent a lifetime writing; from journaling and storytelling in my youth, to academic writing in my late twenties, to fiction in my thirties, writing has always been something I’ve loved doing. I just never thought I could turn it into a career.

UNCHAIN 36

My perception of the field was that, unless you could write Harry Potter, you would always have to supplement your income with work you didn’t want to do. I really, really didn’t want to be in that place again. So I continued to write for fun and search for work elsewhere. It wasn’t until I landed on copywriting, and kinda hated it, that I finally met my ghostwriting mentor. It was through her and more research, I came to understand that this was in fact a viable career. Within three months of making the decision to follow what my heart really wanted to do I had my first traditional book client and had contributed two chapters to a book that was published last November. I’m not saying that this was an easy choice. I still face daily challenges and moments when I doubt myself. The difference now is threefold: I’ve defined what I want, I’ve asked for help, and I know that I am on the right path. If I could offer any advice to those of you contemplating a career change at any stage of life it would be: 1. It’s never too late. Start today. 2. Listen to the thing that makes your heart sing and research the ways in which you can monetize that thing. 3. Find a mentor. This mentor can be any age. Choose someone who can teach you about your chosen field in a way that speaks to you. 4. Learn as much as you can, but don’t let the process of learning stop you from doing. 5. Don’t be afraid to let something go if it’s not serving you. It doesn’t matter how much time or money you’ve invested. It will always be hard if your heart isn’t in it. 6. When you’re ready to share your offering with the world, shout it from the rooftops! Tell everyone you know. Be open to looking for potential clients within your existing network. You never know who will know someone, who knows someone who could use the service you provide. Stop hiding! 7. Work on yourself throughout the process. I feel like I’m an ever-evolving work in progress and so it only makes sense to me that I continue to work on my own self-limiting beliefs as they arise.

UNCHAIN 37

Four years ago almost to the date, I had no idea how terrifying, amazing and transformative my career change adventure would be. Looking back on the path traversed, I’ve realized that even though I’ve experienced almost debilitating lows and altitudes so high I could barely breath, I wouldn’t choose any other way. This life is mine. It’s important. It’s happening. I’m living it. I’m working on rising by lifting others. This is what makes my heart sing!

USE YOUR TIME WELL- SAVORING THE MOMENT

Time is such a precious commodity, and yet we spend so much of it wishing we were somewhere else. Anywhere else. And why? Because we don’t like where we are right now. But when you use your time well on things that help you further your goals, suddenly, where you are is where you should be. I’m going personal here, simply because I don’t know how else to say it. I had many, many years where I’d just go to work, come home, watch a movie or an episode or three of a tv show. Sometimes I’d go on hikes, hang out with family or friends, but that was pretty rare. Not surprisingly, I was seriously unhappy with my life. This continued for several years, me plonking away, wasting time and wondering where my life was going. Believe it or not, it all came to a head with the worst job I’ve ever had. I was working for a big chain grocery store in the bakery department, starting between midnight and 3 am, and trying to sleep during the afternoon, and it didn’t take long before I barely slept, or went a day without sleeping at all. Several times. (On a side note, I learned I can go 63 hours without sleep and work 2 shifts, which is something I’d have been happy to never know. I cried at the drop of a hat, flew into rages, and couldn’t handle my life.) This really couldn’t continue. Fortunately, my sister, who was not thus afflicted, looked into living and working in the UK, and encouraged me to give it a go (I was barely young enough to do it). You may also be wondering what this has to do with time. Bear with me, here. I went to the UK, first to England, then to Scotland. I walked more, and appreciated living in the moment. In my free time, I explored, and often just sat down, savoring the moment, barely able to believe I was actually seeing the places I’d read about so often.

UNCHAIN 40

I’d say my goals changed, but the truth is, I didn’t have any goals before. I thought those were for suckers, and utterly pointless. I just floated aimlessly through life, hoping something interesting would happen to or around me since I had no idea how to find it. Instead, I learned I had to make it. Once I began doing an activity that interested me, though, my focus changed. I wanted to see more, learn more, and much of that came through observation, where I had to be in the present. I couldn’t disappear into la-la land anymore. Suddenly, I’m using my time, trying new things, and living in the present, enjoying the experience of life. This continued when I returned home, too. I started a blog, and trying to write daily was a chore and a half. Sometimes, I’d go weeks without writing, and I felt pretty meh about it all. I tried to reach a daily word goal, and I wasn’t making it, so I’d rather not write at all. My naturopath, who really puts the whole body in holistic medicine, gave me a challenge, to only try for a minute a day. This applied to anything and everything. I need to exercise more? Try for a minute. Why? We often don’t start because we feel we don’t have enough time to devote to our chosen activity. Instead, we make it an all or nothing deal, which couldn’t be further from the truth. If you aim for a minute a day, 9 times out of 10, you’ll do more than that. And if you’re too tired, stressed, or don’t have much time, then you still have the satisfaction of meeting your goal of a minute a day. Just a minute. You can spare the time, can’t you? It’s an easy way to use your time well.

UNCHAIN 42

Of course, the other thing about time! Is that we don’t always give ourselves enough of it. We take a trip, and try to fit too many places in too short a time. Recently, I spent time in New Zealand. While I was on the South Island I stayed in an adorable town called Oamaru. I swear to you now, if I hadn’t already booked my ticket to the States, I’d still be there. Even though I gave myself two months, I still felt rushed. (While I know most of you will be calling me names for even having that much time, if I’d stayed longer, I would’ve worked and made a life of it. For a while.) It can be seen in every short family trip, where you decide to hit this exotic location and you’re so exhausted from packing and getting there that you don’t have fun. It would’ve been less stressful to just stay at home. Or you’re trying to fit 6 cities from 6 different countries into 7 days. Everything blurs, you don’t remember where you were, but you can say you’ve been to 6 countries! Except you can’t remember a blessed thing about any of them!!! Sometimes, in order to use your time well, you have to SLOW DOWN. It’s time for us to start living in the moment. To start paying attention to where we are, and noticing the little things. Time to realize that doing a little every day is better than doing a lot one day and never touching it again for a month. It’s time to spend time with yourself, to appreciate who you are, to realize your worth and celebrate it. Time to walk away from a bad situation and heal. What better time to work on that than in the new year? What are you spending your time on this year?

ARE YOU TRULY HAPPY?

Founder and Owner of Soul Power Secrets

I remember my Dad asking me what I wanted to be when I grow up? To be honest, I was never clear about the job or career that I wanted – but my answer was always “I want to be happy.”

As a child, and a teenager, it sounded easy enough. Then Life got in the way!

I’d imagined that being happy would be easy, as when you grow up, you’re free. No more rules, you can do whatever you want … whenever you want. Because being an adult is like that all the time, isn’t it?

NO!

Sometimes our World turns upside down. We experience heartbreak – first love, lost. We didn’t get the job we wanted. People leave us. We find ourselves stuck, trying to survive, wondering how to pay the rent, or desperately trying to keep up with our friends and peers.

“What do they think of me?” “I’m not good enough!” “Does my bum look big in this?” “Maybe I should stay at home.” “I need to work hard and save; then I can buy a big house just like you …

So much time is wasted trying to keep up with the Jones’s – but does that make you happy?

Maybe you shut down at times, trying to escape the Social Media frenzy of perfect lives … trying to keep away from the noise outside.

LEAVE ME ALONE!

Then, when you’re ready, you put on a smile, ready to face the World again. How do you really feel – are you truly happy?

UNCHAIN 46

Happiness is an emotion, one of many. And the truth is, we cannot go straight from depression to happiness. We must work through a range of different emotional states to get to a happier place.

I’m not suggesting that you’re depressed, but I am asking you if you are still searching for true happiness.

Do you feel happy? Are you existing or are you living a fulfilled life? Are you ready to become happier?

Think about a time when you felt powerless. “Nothing’s going to make this better – I’ve had enough, I give up!” But, there’s a spark, a little voice that whispers “Try again …

So, with a fresh outlook, you give it another shot. One more try and this time it gets better. You start to reclaim your power. Your vibration improves – you feel lighter, it’s getting easier.

Feeling empowered, you realize “I got this!”

Working up through different emotions, you become happier as you stride into your power.

STEP BY STEP.

If you’re feeling depressed, while you’re unlikely to feel joy immediately, you may feel anger. This is a change of emotional state – and is a slightly higher vibration.

With anger comes passion, as you feel your fighting spirit return. Standing up for yourself, you know no one and nothing has the right to take your happiness away.

As things start to improve, you notice that it feels exciting – the future looks bright. Excitement fuels and recharges you – it reignites the spark, as you feel happy and joyful once more.

In an age where we expect immediate results, this still takes time. But it gets quicker as you learn to shift your emotional state. Keep moving forward, one step at a time. The best is yet to come …
