Dear Friends, I remember my grandmother always talking about doing her “spring clean.” She described it as a mammoth task. Furniture would get moved about and every nook and cranny was cleaned. Although nowadays few of us make such an annual effort in our own homes, Lent does give us the opportunity to embark upon a spiritual spring clean. These six weeks of Lent give us an invitation to examine ourselves more closely, to try to devote more time to listening to God and asking God to help us amend those parts of our lives where change would be no bad thing. I remember a priest advising me way back in 1980 to try to do three things in Lent: ·To pray regularly and study scripture and read a devotional book; ·Fast; ·Give to charity. Unfortunately, people associate Lent with giving up something like chocolate or biscuits or drinking alcohol or smoking and then returning to those things on Easter Day. It misses the point. Fasting can be abstinence from anything we have come to be addicted to: too much food or drink or too much Facebook or too much idle gossip – the list is endless. Hopefully, by Easter Day, one would not wish to revert to those old addictions. Sometimes, people give the money to charity that they would have spent on the things they have given up. Giving to charity encourages us to grow in generosity and take the focus off ourselves. There are a variety of charities to choose from – you might have your favourite one or support our Church Mission Partners in the Philippines or Turning Point or you might wish to support the Bishop of Gloucester’s Lent Appeal (to support a school in Tanzania) – which Old Sodbury church is doing for their Lent lunch on 9 March. This year, we have produced a prayer leaflet to help you grow your prayer life. Please do take a leaflet and use it. There are also books for sale to read during Lent, including two that are made up of scripture readings and reflections on those readings. We also have the highly recommended Lent Course running on Wednesday evenings and Thursday morning in Lent. The service of Penitence and Reconciliation on 16 March will be a service where you can seek forgiveness and healing – all part of the Lenten discipline. So there is ample opportunity this Lent for some spiritual spring cleaning and growing. I hope, by the time we reach Easter Day, you will feel aglow with the Spirit! With my love and prayers,

Rev. Canon Jane Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:jane@kenchington.plus.com

Mothers’ Union At our last meeting on Monday 10th February we were able to revisit Nepal with Chris Eccles and her husband. The work done in the hospitals in very rough areas is really amazing as most of the Doctors have to cover a large variety of complaints as well as operating on patients. Next month on Monday 10th March, Dorothy Marshall will tell us how A.F.I.A (Away from it all) holidays help families who have been referred to them for help by either their Vicar or family doctor, to give them a short time when the family can get away.

On the Thursday morning from 11-12, in the Church Centre, some of our retired clergy will give talks on paintings covering similar Passion themes. JK

Praying in Lent Lent is a good time to get intentional about your pattern of prayer! If you’d like a bit of help with praying, there is a prayer leaflet to take home and use. You can find them in all the churches – do pick one up. 4

A Blessing for the Brokenhearted It’s hard when someone you love dies and you are left behind. There are no particular places for this poem to reach into, I just thought it might be what it sets out to be for some of us, a blessing for the broken-hearted. Jan Richardson is the author. Yvonne Let us agree for now that we will not say the breaking makes us stronger or that it is better to have this pain than to have done without this love. Let us promise we will not tell ourselves

time will heal the wound when every day our waking opens it anew. Perhaps for now it can be enough to simply marvel at the mystery of how a heart so broken can go on beating,

as if it were made for precisely this— as if it knows the only cure for love is more of it as if it sees the heart’s sole remedy for breaking is to love still

as if it trusts that its own stubborn and persistent pulse is the rhythm of a blessing we cannot begin to fathom but will save us nonetheless.

There is no remedy for love but to love more. – Henry David Thoreau 5

Lent Books

DIOCESE OF GLOUCESTER

Reading reflectively in Lent is a fruitful thing to do. Often it’s confusing as to what is suitable and recommended. Every Lent, I try to suggest some titles and this year, there are three possibilities. If you haven’t bought a Lent Book yet it isn’t too late to order one! The three books that we’re recommending this year are:

Celebrate 20 years of Women Priests Saturday 10 May 2014 A special lunch will take place at 12.30pm in Gloucester Cathedral. The speaker is the Revd. Dr Jo Bailey Wells, Chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury and former Dean of Clare College, Cambridge

1. “Reflections for Lent” This book gives you a daily reflection on a passage of scripture. It costs £3.99.

Tickets £10 per person, or a table of seven for £60.

2. Looking through the Cross” by Graham Tomlin. This is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s 2014 Lent book. It looks to be a good read. It costs £6.99.

A special Eucharist at 4pm in Gloucester Cathedral. Preacher Revd. Canon Jane Kenchington. Free entry and all are welcome.

3. “Welcoming the Way of the Cross” by Barbara Mosse. This is the Bible Reading Fellowship’s Lent Book. It is a Journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day: a passage of scripture with a reflection, prayer and a question to ponder. It costs £7.99.

Bishop Michael to Retire The Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Revd Michael Perham, has today announced that he will retire in November. Bishop Michael will have served in the diocese for over ten years and is retiring 38 years after his ordination as a deacon in Canterbury Cathedral. Bishop Michael said. “By the time I retire in November I shall have completed more than ten years as Bishop of Gloucester. For me these have been happy, stimulating and fruitful years, full of blessing. To serve the people of Gloucestershire, both the churches and the wider communities, has been a huge privilege. "I have had a wonderful team of colleagues, a talented college of clergy and legions of committed lay people helping to take forward the Church’s mission. To be a teacher, pastor, worship leader and sign of unity among them has been wonderful. I shall miss it all when it comes to an end in nine months’ time.” Bishop Michael will continue to have a full diary until his retirement, with three special occasions taking place in his last year. The first, in April, will be a visit to Compton Abdale parish church, meaning he will have visited and lead worship in all 355 parish churches in the diocese. The second will be a celebration of his 10 year anniversary as Bishop of Gloucester in May and then the third, a seven day pilgrimage in June. This will be his last pilgrimage, which starts in Cirencester and finishes at Gloucester Cathedral, once completed he will have walked through

every parish boundary of the diocese. Over the last six years, his pilgrimages have covered 438 miles and visited 173 churches. A special service will take place to celebrate Bishop Michael’s time as Bishop of Gloucester and to wish him and his family farewell on 8 November. During his time as Bishop of Gloucester, he has been prominent in the movement for the ordination of women as bishops and is President of Affirming Catholicism and a Vice President of WATCH. More recently he has served on the Pilling Working Party on human sexuality. He is President of the Retired Clergy Association and of the Alcuin Club, Bishop Protector of the Society of St Francis and Chair of the Governing Body of Ripon College Cuddesdon. Throughout his ministry he has written books on theology, liturgy and spirituality and been in demand as a speaker about worship. Within the Diocese of Gloucester, he is president or patron of a number of local organisations, including GARAS, GEAR, Cheltenham YMCA, the Star College and Emmaus Gloucester. He hosts the quarterly “Bishop’s Breakfast”, which brings together many of the civic and community leaders in the county. He is Pro-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire and Vice Chair of the University Council.

Jesus is…

For Experience Easter 2014, the Diocese is running a social media campaign called Jesus is… The campaign was initially run by the City Church in Seattle, as a way of engaging people in conversation through social media. The concept is to ask ‘who do you believe Jesus is?’ and receive the answers through Facebook and Twitter. It helped 10

the church to start conversations and raise awareness of Jesus and the campaign. Through Twitter, people can to respond to the statement: “Jesus is…” using the hashtag #jesusis. As well as using the Diocesan Twitter and Facebook accounts, we would like to support churches that have their own social media sites to run the campaign. Alongside this, we will also be producing Experience resources, which will be available to either download or buy through our website. To find out more about the Jesus is… campaign, visit our website at www. gloucester.anglican.org/churchoutreach/experience-easter or follow the Diocese’s Twitter account @glosdioc.

Tackling poverty is about following Jesus’ example At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which took place in January, leaders gathered to discuss how best to address some of the world’s most pressing issues. Even as they did so, Oxfam released a report that strikingly highlighted growing inequality in the world: the richest 85 people in the world are as wealthy as the poorest 3.5 billion people. Such staggering inequality is not just a global issue but also very much a local challenge. The number of people in the UK dependent on emergency food aid rose by 170% last year. And there was a similar rise in the number of individuals resorting to payday lenders.

inequality and injustice is core to our mission as followers of Jesus Christ. As a diocese we are actively looking at how we can work in partnership with credit unions to provide an alternative to payday lenders. We are also encouraging local churches to use the resources of organisations such as Church Action on Poverty and Christians Against Poverty. This is not about grand gestures, but rather human compassion and Christian service. The Right Revd. Martyn Snow, Bishop of Tewkesbury

Do you know anything of the 18 men named on Chipping Sodbury’s War memorial? Alison Benton will be writing a Commemorative Booklet in their honour to celebrate the beginning of WW1 this summer. This would be greatly enhanced by having some individual or family memories of these men, the families they came from, their pre-war occupation, the family they then left behind, or anything else their name reminds you of. Please send Alison any information you are willing to share. Please send anything you have to ambenton@btinternet.com, or to 25 Lilliput Court, Chipping Sodbury, BS37 6EB; or phone Alison on 01454 315855. All contributions will be gratefully received and acknowledged.

When the Archbishop of Canterbury spoke about food banks and payday loans, he was criticised for getting too political. But in reality he was doing nothing more that highlighting changes taking place in society and reminding us that tackling 11
