Dear Friends, Olympic fever will be gripping us this month if it hasn’t already done so! For the first time since 1948, Britain is hosting the Olympic Games and lots of people, with their sought-after tickets, can’t wait to watch their particular sport. Some of the wedding couples this year have had to hear me talking about sport and marathons. Marriage can be viewed a bit like a marathon – unlike the sprint, it lasts a lot longer – or is expected to last a lot longer. Perseverance is required along with lots of love, patience, kindness and all those fruits of the Spirit along with a cost and sacrifice. The people of St Paul’s day were familiar with sports and races and St Paul often talked about the Christian life being like a run: we are to fix our eyes on Jesus and strive for the goal of attaining life after death. Sometimes the Christian life is thought of as a journey. Thinking in terms of sport, it’s a race where we don’t allow ourselves to be distracted from what’s going on on the other running track, but travelling with eyes looking straight ahead. And there are distractions galore to stop us from growing into a deeper relationship with Jesus/God. How many times do you find that prayer time or Bible study time have been squeezed because something, supposedly better, was calling on your time? How many times do we not do that kind thing that we should have done? Jesus calls us forward so we can grow more like him. The goal for St Paul was life after death – the heavenly banquet. The Olympic Games will bring to Britain people of many races and creeds. It is an opportunity to see all humanity drawn together competing and enjoying sporting events all together. That’s what heaven will be like – full of all sorts of people – some like us and some very unlike us – but all are children of God. So enjoy the Olympics – whether at some of the actual events or by watching TV - and persevere on your race in the journey of discipleship! With love and prayers,

Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:jane@kenchington.plus.com

The invitation came completely out of the blue and we were delighted to attend the Garden Party especially in this Diamond Jubilee Year. There were 8000 guests at this event and we saw the Queen and Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Anne and several other members of the Royal Family. continued to execute that service faithfully for the last 60 years.

Jane’s Homily for the Jubilee Service on 3rd June 2012

In today’s reading from St Luke’s gospel, Jesus finds his disciples arguing about which of them was the greatest. Sometimes those disciples must have driven Jesus mad because they just didn’t “get” what discipleship was about. Jesus reminded them that life is not about who is the greatest. Rather, life is about serving one another…and he modelled his life on serving others. Our human brains need to be reminded constantly of this truth – and we need God’s wisdom to keep us on track. The writer of the reading from the Book of Proverbs that we also heard this morning, reminds us that it is through God’s wisdom that monarchs reign and rulers rule – and only then do peace and justice come about.

May I speak in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Today we are thanking God for our present Queen. We’re thanking God for her 60 years’ reign and for her wise leadership. When Queen Elizabeth came to the throne, she was in her mid- twenties – younger than many of us here. Since then she has served this country and the Commonwealth with immense dedication.

It’s interesting to recall the words she used in a radio broadcast from Cape Town, South Africa, on her 21st birthday. Princess Elizabeth, as she was known then, said in a solemn act of dedication: Over the years, one hasn’t known much about the Queen’s Christian faith – she I declare before you all that my didn’t talk about it very much. But she whole life whether it be long or clearly had a strong faith in God from an short shall be devoted to your early age. words came from the lips of Queen Elizabeth II. She reminds us that life is all about serving one another. She reminds us that love and forgiveness lie at the heart of community life if they are to flourish in a godly way. She reminds us that true wisdom comes from taking your bearings from God rather than from anyone else. It is obvious from the Queen’s attitudes and actions that she does that. Had she come late to this understanding of Christian faith? I doubt it. At the Coronation, three swords are used: the Sword of Mercy, the Sword of Spiritual Justice and the Sword of Temporal Justice. The Sword of Mercy has a broken tip and links to the forgiveness that Jesus talked about. The whole Coronation Service, set in the context of Holy Communion, is steeped in Christian spirituality. The Queen is anointed – she believes this anointing makes her Queen until she dies. Abdication is therefore completely out of the question. She had pledged herself to serve this Country and 7

The Bishop of London writes a Jubilee pamphlet for The Bible Society For the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Bible Society's President, the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, wrote a pamphlet entitled: Jubilee then and now – a big idea for the 21st century. The pamphlet explores the biblical concept of jubilee and argues that as a society we need to move forward by reassessing our values in the light of what the Bible teaches: 'The 2012 Jubilee offers us an opportunity to pause and reflect not only on an extraordinary reign but also on what the Jubilee could mean to us as a nation.' The Bishop also refers to the Queen's own lively Christian faith which sustains her work. If you would like to read the pamphlet you can see it at the link below. http://www.biblesociety.org.uk/images/ju bilee/jubilee-leaflet.pdf

The hotel received a call from the TV production company in September 2011 and after a number of telephone calls and filmed interviews discovered in November that they had been selected. Hotel Manager Jenna Hale, and her mother Christine, spent two weeks filming in Paignton, Bournemouth, Chipping Sodbury and Ross on Wye. “We didn’t know where or when we’d be visiting the other B&B’s until the day before we had to leave, it was all very exciting and a wonderful experience’, commented Jenna. “At a time when the Government and Local Councils are working hard to promote local shopping on the High Street the involvement of a Chipping Sodbury business on such a high profile TV programme will have a positive impact on our local economy and draw attention to our thriving market town’’ commented Chamber Chair and Hotelier Mark Lloyd.

And it’s goodbye to Val and Stuart…

Olivia’s Baptism

Val’s arrival with us at the beginning of February 2010 turned out to be a great gift to us all. It’s a pity that she’s leaving us so soon, but 9 village churches are calling for her attention! Val has been a delight to work alongside: she’s brought wisdom and sensitivity, humility and humour, artistic gifts and a passion for evangelism and mission, counselling and pastoral gifts and much else. We’ll miss her hugely. Training Incumbents need good curates – each can learn from the other and this has certainly happened during the last 30 months. We joke about Val providing the fluffy and soft, touchy-feely front for us as a team – but do not be deceived – underneath can be an awful lot of tough love! So we know what credentials our next curate needs to possess! I’m also regularly reminded by other people about my “young curate”…as if I’m 20 years her senior (it’s two years, actually!). Val – we’re hugely grateful to you for all that you have given to us and shared with us. The fact that this post you’ll be moving to was the first post you applied for speaks volumes about your capability and we hope and pray that you will flourish in the Ermin West Benefice. Huge thanks also go to Stuart for all he has given us whilst he’s been here: the continual support he’s given Val to enable her to do her work; the media advice he’s given us (which includes transforming Outlook), the missional ideas he’s shared with us and his play acting, notable being one of the ugly sisters. So, may God bless you both as you move into a new phase of ministry and we will be praying for you in the weeks to come. We’ll always remember you with thankful hearts. Jane Kenchington

I baptised Olivia Lucy Sizani Nyandoro on 10 June at Old Sodbury - full immersion in the font there.

This was a first. Olivia loved it - she kicked her legs in the water as though it was her bath. No tears at all. Olivia obviously enjoyed her experience of church and we welcome her into the church family. God bless her and her family.
