ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK REFLECTION
By Therese Campos, UM SophomoreI had the opportunity to travel to the Mexican-American border through St. Mary’s Alterna ve Spring Break trip at the end of last month, along with five other UM students and our chaperone. During the week-long trip I met children who are laughing despite all the danger they faced on their journeys, smiling and passionate volunteers that see the human dignity in the migrants they aid, priests that provide spiritual support on both sides of the border, and individuals who are seeking a be er life in the United States.
I heard many stories first-hand of how people arrived at the border and the difficul es they face on their journey as no part of the process is made easy for the migrant.
A er leaving their home, many traverse mul ple countries on foot as well as via bus and train, while trying to avoid situa ons such as being kidnapped by cartel. Once migrants arrive at border ci es, they face the decision of presen ng themselves at the border as asylum-seekers or pu ng their name into a lo ery/wai ng-list via the CBP One phone app to receive an appointment to enter into the US.
Bridges are only open to those who already have access to the US, so those wan ng to present themselves for asylum at the border must first cross the Rio Grande. Migrants will then be detained, processed, and released within the US as they wait for a court date to review their asylum-seeking cause. Those with the CBP One app try to find safe spaces in Mexico as their wait can last up to a year and a half. Once they receive an appointment, migrants can cross the border, apply for a work permit and begin their asylumseeking process while they live in the US.
I would like to highlight the story of someone my own age whom I met when the group crossed into Reynosa for one day. This young nineteen-year-old woman was ini ally hesitant to tell me about her journey because it wasn’t that bad when compared to other migrants’ experiences. She le Nicaragua with a group of people she knew but was not related to. The journey was tough, but there were no major setbacks un l she reached Mexico City where the group was picked up by poten al kidnappers. Taken to a run-down building, they had to strip as they were thoroughly pa ed down and every inch of their belongings were checked in order to rob them. She was able to make
it out with a small sum of money due to it being hidden in her hair e. She called them “poten al” kidnappers because a er four hours, her group was dropped off in the dark, outside of Mexico City. Eventually, they were able to make it to Reynosa on a bus, where they were promptly picked up by what- to the best of her knowledge- was Mexican migra on. She was separated from the group and held for a few days with her only nutri on being some le uce, peanut bu er, stale bread, and a cup of juice each day. Her $600 pesos were taken, although her phone and headphones were returned to her upon her release. She has now been wai ng for her CBP One appointment for five months, helping in the Casa del Migrante shelter’s kitchen to help pass the me.
Please keep her in your prayers, along with all the other people who have made and are making the journey, those that aid them on the way, and the souls that have been laid to rest. Thank you,
Therese Campos UM Sophomore

THROUGH THE LENS OF RACISM
FRIDAY MARCH 29 I 7:00 PM
All are welcome to a end this bilingual Sta ons of the Cross at 7 p.m. on Good Friday, March 29. With collabora on from the Hispanic/La no community and the An -Racism Working Group, this prayer event helps us to walk the way of the cross with Jesus, while reflec ng on how injus ce can be found in our own day.
Just as Jesus suffered for us, we can acknowledge that many people suffer unjustly, simply because of the color of their skin or their na onal origin. As a community, we can pray together and work toward ways to combat injus ce in our social structures, ins tu ons and in our hearts.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
“One cannot know the Lord without this habit of adoring, of adoring in silence. I believe, if I am not mistaken, this prayer of adora on is the prayer least known by us, it is the one we do the least”, as if it were a “waste of me before the Lord, before the mystery of Jesus Christ”.
Instead, we should rediscover “the silence of Adora on: he is the Lord and I adore him."-Pope Francis
We have Eucharis c Adora on on Monday (10-11 am), Tuesday (4-5 pm), Wednesday 5:45-9 pm (Rosary for Life from 6:00 -6:20 pm, Praise & Worship from 8:00-9:00 pm), and Thursday (3:30-4:30 pm) Here is the link for our Wednesday night adora on signup: t.ly/bCXbA
