STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

WELCOME TO ORDINARY TIME... BY MICHAEL REGAN, CAMPUS MISSIONARY DISCIPLE Welcome to Ordinary Time. Christmas is over. Lent is a month away. And we are stuck in the dreary gloom of a Michigan winter, where the days some mes feel longer than a Pistons’ losing streak. It can be easy in these ordinary weeks, when the messages of prepara on and rejoicing fade and the messages of repentance have yet to take hold, to lose ourselves to the passing of me. To save Christ for Lent or Easter now that He has been put away with the na vity sets. To let our faith be one that waits for the extraordinary. And this is to miss the whole point. In last week’s Gospel, John begins his descrip on of Christ’s public ministry. Jesus is roughly thirty years old and will die within four years. He has already lived about 90% of His life. Yet today’s Gospel reading is not from John 15 but from the second half of its first chapter. Three decades sit between two miracles: the birth of Christ at Christmas and the turning of water to wine at the wedding feast of Cana, which begins John 2. Three decades that we dwell li le on and say li le of. Ordinary Time spans weeks or months rather than years, but perhaps we can begin to see the parallel. In the first three decades of His life, Jesus did not perform miracles. He did not ac vely change the world to any sort of irregular extent. He merely lived and learned the life of an ordinary person before his public emergence. Why? It is not because those years didn’t ma er. Christ’s first thirty years, much like His father Joseph, should not be taken as unimportant because of the lack of words a ributed to them. Christ changed the world only a er being forged in the fire of the ordinary. But God did not need this. He did it because we do.

Across all four Gospels, there is just one chapter (Luke 2) that offers any sort of descrip on of the paren ng of a young Jesus by Mary and Joseph. And three mes, Luke tells us that the Holy Family consistently commi ed to following the Lord’s Law, which was the Law of Moses at the me, through circumcision (verse 21), purifica on (22), and annual a endance of the Passover feast in Jerusalem (41). We will never know how exactly Mary and Joseph raised Jesus, and we need not know. There is no rule except for this: to follow, as well and o en as we can, the Word and Way of the Lord. That begins and ends with ge ng ourselves in a pew (or a chair) every weekend. Mass, maybe especially in these winter weeks, can feel an underwhelming hassle. It can seem so ordinary to repeat the same prayers, sing the same songs, and walk up the same aisle. And it is, but these are among the ordinary habits that forge our faith into something greater. Just as we can’t access an elevator without walking into the lobby, we can’t access the wondrous nature of the Mass or of prayer if we lack the consistent habits of presence and purpose. Let’s return briefly to that miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Jesus could have chosen any number of miracles as his grand entrance to the fray. That loaves and fishes one was pre y cool. Yet we find Him at a friend’s wedding making drinks. We find Him exposing the extraordinary on the most ordinary of terms. And this is how the Mass works. There is no lightshow. No smoke. No mirrors. Bruce Buffer is not here to tell us that JESUS CHRIST HAS ENTERED THE ARENA during the consecra on. But He is there, in the ordinary form of bread and wine but the extraordinary, life-giving ma er of Body and Blood. If we do anything with the blessing of these weeks of Ordinary Time, let it be the con nua on or beginning of the ordinary habits that bring us closer to our extraordinary Father.

St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, Inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uni ng residents and students. We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life. Inspired by Igna an spirituality, we live a faith that does jus ce, reaching out to the marginalized. As an apostolic parish, we are commi ed to ongoing forma on of Chris an witness, discipleship, and leadership.

A LETTER FROM THE CHURCH ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE Dear St. Mary parishioners, The Church Enhancement Commi ee, ini ated by Fr. Jim Gartland in February of 2022 in prepara on for our 100th anniversary in December 2024, has been mee ng regularly over the past two years. We’re a diverse group of resident and student parishioners working towards enhancing the sacredness, dignity, and beauty of the interior sanctuary. We are excited to share the following updates! You may remember the chair survey last spring when you were asked to evaluate two chairs that were being considered as replacements for our current, well-worn chairs. We’re happy to report that an order for the new chairs has been placed, with a delivery date at the end of January.

The commi ee has also commissioned a new crucifix, which is being hand carved by local sculptor, Mike Kapetan. We have been blessed to work with Mike, who has created beau ful and meaningful carved wooden pieces for many churches and organiza ons, both locally and na on- wide. We prayerfully considered and discussed the quali es of a crucifix that would be inspira onal to our diverse, mul -cultural, Catholic parish. We do not yet have a comple on date for the crucifix, but we will keep you updated… stay tuned! (You can view some of Mike’s prior work at his website: www.michaelkapetansculptor.com/por olio/spiritual-images)

WANT A MORE FRUITFUL LENT? TRY A LITTLE SCRIPTURE THIS SEASON! SCC groups begin the week of February 5th. Lent will be upon us soon (Ash Wednesday is Feb. 14) and it’s me to think about how you might enrich your prayer life and spend extra me with God’s Word. Joining one of our Small Church Communi es can help! SCC groups will meet for seven weeks to discuss faith, God’s presence in our world, as well as the meaning of the Sunday scripture readings. We have groups to fit most schedules, as well as special interests, including a Spanish speaking group, an Igna an Spirituality topic, or “Just Faith” social jus ce issues. Here’s what one group member had to say about the SCC experience: “The Holy Spirit was clearly present in our discussions, bringing great richness to our sharing, bringing each person’s uniqueness to our group. This brought far greater insight to the weekly Scripture passages that we reviewed, making the readings at the Sunday liturgy more powerful and meaningful.”

Igna an SCC Lent 2024: Focusing on Prayer This Lent, join a five-part series of guided discussions on prayer. The sessions will address how we can become more transparent in our conversa ons with God. In our prayer prac ce do we filter certain topics in our conversa on with God? What is it that we tell God? Igna an Spirituality is at the heart of these sessions reminding us that God’s love is uncondi onal. Each session is based on chapters from the book “Praying the Truth” by William Barry, SJ. E a MacDonagh-Dumler will lead the in-person sessions beginning on Wednesday, Feb 21 with the topics of “Prayer as Rela onship” and “Prayer and Friendship”. Addi onal topics from the book will be discussed on the following Wednesday evenings: Feb 28, March 6, March 13, and March 20, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. If you decide to register for this Lenten SCC group, you will need to purchase a copy of the book: Praying the Truth by William A. Barry. The Ninevites heard the preaching of Jonah and repented of their evil ways, thus experiencing the Lord’s compassion. Do we repent when we hear the teaching of Jesus? Do we invest our lives in the world rather than in God’s kingdom?
