STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

“Christ is Present Here “ By Bailey Burke, Campus Missionary Disciple I hadn’t fully experienced what the Body of Christ, present in His Church, meant un l I came to St. Mary Student Parish. While the Catholic community I had grown up with back home in Grand Rapids definitely played an important role in my life, I didn’t feel like I truly belonged to a community un l I found myself a mid freshman, walking through the doors for Sunday mass my first weekend in col‐ lege. I remember being invited from the pulpit to a end Ig.nite, Fresh Gathering, and a wide variety of other welcome week events. My heart was aching for community, and St Mary seemed like a good place to seek it.

There are ways everyone can join in the effort to build the Body of Christ among our undergraduate students. First and foremost, please pray for our campus ministry this year, espe‐ cially as we prepare for Fall retreat in early November. Pray for students to have life-changing encounters with this beau ful Body of Christ we’re so blessed to have here. And if you’re able, I invite you in a special way to support our student parish‐ ioners financially, especially these next two weeks as we begin our Fall retreat fundraiser. Fall retreat is one of the most im‐ pac ul experiences we offer to students, but it is a big under‐ taking. Your dona ons can help make it possible for all inter‐ ested students to a end. Our work wouldn’t be possible with‐ out your generosity.

Flash-forward four years… a lot has changed, globally (college during a pandemic had its challenges) but more importantly, a lot has changed for me spiritually. The many encounters I expe‐ rienced in my first semester of college – encounters of true friendship, community, and Christ’s Eucharis c Presence – fed a hunger that I’d always had. I felt so alive, and I just wanted to dive deeper into my faith. These last four years haven’t been perfect – school and life stresses have stolen my joy from me to me – but throughout every stumble, Jesus has con nued to invite me closer to His Precious Heart. When the opportunity arose to spend another year, post-gradua on, here at St Mary, I felt Jesus invi ng me to serve this community that had spent the past four years serving me.

Lastly, I invite you to join us Monday-Thursday, when we have Eucharis c Adora on available for at least an hour daily. Build‐ ing the Body of Christ starts with each of us growing in our individual rela onships with God. Jesus is wai ng for you – whether student, staff, or resident parishioner – to encounter Him in a deeper way in Adora on. We praise our God who is present in the bread and wine and whenever the Church gath‐ ers to sing or pray (Sacrosanctum Concilium 7). God bless you.

I began my role in campus ministry as a Campus Missionary Disciple (CMD) in August, and the energy this year has been absolutely electric. I cried a li le at the first 8pm student mass; the church was so full, the Body of Christ so alive on campus. COVID stripped much of my college experience of its full potenal. But this year has been a gi to me. It’s been an honor to get to know new students, whose vibrant energy filled the whole church at our recent New Student Retreat. And it’s been a joy to see lines for confession on the Diag and lines each Sunday a er mass for Sunday Snack as students chat and laugh. When I think of the Body of Christ, I see pews filled with stu‐ dents, hungry to be filled. I think of Eucharis c Adora on, where God has made Himself known to me. Many faces come to mind; I can’t help but muse on mee ng new people in the lounge, speaking Spanish at lunch me with coworkers, and all my dear friends I’ve been given to love here at St Mary.

With the news of Hamas bombing Israel, who in turn has declared war, it is worth asking how we as Catholics are to think/ pray/reflect about complicated interna onal situa ons such as this one. Given that we are celebra ng Respect Life Month, what follows are selected paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church that pertain to issues of war. May we keep the people of Israel and Pales ne, par cularly innocent civilians and those who have been marginalized, firmly in our pray‐ ers these days. Fr. Dan Dixon, S.J.

SAFEGUARDING PEACE Peace By recalling the commandment, "You shall not kill," our Lord asked for peace of heart and denounced murderous anger and hatred as immoral. Anger is a desire for revenge. "To desire vengeance in order to do evil to someone who should be punished is illicit," but it is praise‐ worthy to impose restitution "to correct vices and maintain justice." If anger reaches the point of a deliberate desire to kill or seriously wound a neighbor, it is gravely against charity; it is a mortal sin. The Lord says, "Everyone who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment." Deliberate hatred is contrary to charity. Hatred of the neighbor is a sin when one deliberately wishes him evil. Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him grave harm. "But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven." Respect for and development of human life require peace. Peace is not merely the absence of war, and it is not limited to maintaining a balance of powers between adversaries. Peace cannot be attained on earth without safeguarding the goods of persons, free com‐ munication among men, respect for the dignity of persons and peoples, and the assiduous practice of fraternity. Peace is "the tran‐ quillity of order." Peace is the work of justice and the effect of charity.

Avoiding war The fifth commandment forbids the intentional destruction of human life. Because of the evils and injustices that accompany all war, the Church insistently urges everyone to prayer and to action so that the divine Goodness may free us from the ancient bondage of war. All citizens and all governments are obliged to work for the avoidance of war. However, "as long as the danger of war persists and there is no international authority with the necessary competence and power, governments cannot be denied the right of lawful self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed." Non-combatants, wounded soldiers, and prisoners must be respected and treated humanely. Actions deliberately contrary to the law of nations and to its universal principles are crimes, as are the orders that command such actions. Blind obedience does not suffice to excuse those who carry them out. Thus the extermination of a people, nation, or ethnic minority must be condemned as a mortal sin. One is morally bound to resist orders that command genocide. Injus ce, excessive economic or social inequali es, envy, distrust, and pride raging among men and na ons constantly threaten peace and cause wars. Everything done to overcome these disorders contributes to building up peace and avoiding war: Insofar as men are sinners, the threat of war hangs over them and will so con nue un l Christ comes again; but insofar as they can vanquish sin by com‐ ing together in charity, violence itself will be vanquished and these words will be fulfilled: "they shall beat their swords into plow‐ shares, and their spears into pruning hooks; na on shall not li up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."

SAFE HAVEN SUNDAY : THANK YOU! Our Safe Haven Sunday was a big success ! Saint Mary Student Parish extends a tremendous “Thank You!” to all who made Safe Haven Sunday possible and to all parish‐ ioners for their support of the educa on and awareness on the issues of pornography at our Sunday celebra on. Again, thanks to our parish community for your openness to the topics of internet safety and the dignity of the human per‐ son in light of the pornographic culture. Just because Safe haven Sunday is over for this year, it doesn’t mean our efforts to make our homes safe havens is over.
