STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

MARRIAGE PREPARATION AND RESOURCES BY JULIE MUSSIO, MARRIAGE PREPARATION COORDINATOR What a privilege it is to welcome engaged couples to begin the prepara on, planning, and celebra on of the sacrament of marriage. To quote a few: “This special parish is where our love bloomed.” “We are over the moon to return to the church that meant so much to us in our college years.” “Here at St. Mary’s is where we met, fell in love, and grew in faith together.” It is our joyful duty to journey with these couples and share the true meaning of sacrament. While there are many details for the wedding day, honeymoon, and living situa ons that need a en on, our job is to enlighten and invite them to deepen their faith as well as provide opportuni es for both spiritual and prac cal aspects of living the sacrament as designed by God. My husband and I a ended marriage prep back in 1979 and the 2 ½ hours are a total blur. It is a true gi that the Church now realizes that couples need more me, resources, and instruc on. Our engaged couples are blessed to have a much deeper and inspiring prepara on experience that will hopefully remain with them for years to come. We have a vibrant and dedicated group of SMSP married couples who have been involved for many years sharing their wisdom and experiences with our engaged couples by par cipa ng in an annual “seminar” and reviewing the online inventory.

golden years, married couples have the awesome task of witnessing to God’s faithful love to each other, their children, and society. No couple does this perfectly, and everyone needs help when love feels strained and the going gets tough. All marriages can grow in knowledge, faith, joy, and love. Whether you are just star ng out in marriage or have fi y years under your belt, the advice, real life stories, and Church teaching here can help strengthen and bless your marriage. They offer a 7-day online retreat that looks worthwhile! www.jesuits.org/stories/five-ways-igna an-spirituality-canhelp-your-marriage/ www.igna anspirituality.com/couples-and-the-examen/ Daily Companion for Married Couples (here is an example from the book that offers couples 2minute daily medita ons) Quote: “Let God be God and your spouse be human.” Reflect: It can be difficult to accept the fact that your spouse is not perfect. This is not to say that we shouldn’t try our best for the one we love but unrealis c expecta ons only lead to frustra on that can fracture a rela onship. Value your spouse for who they are and love them where they are at. Only God is perfect. Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me for the mes I have been too demanding on my spouse and too easy with myself. Amen

Please pray for our engaged couples to fully enter the prepara on! There are many great Catholic resources out there for both engaged and married couples. As we approach the holy season of Lent, some may be looking for ways to grow personally or as a couple by spending me in prayer, or other spiritual reading. Here are a few sugges ons:
