Have you recently lost your employer health insurance or do you anticipate losing it in the near future. If so, you may be able to get affordable insurance right now through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Although the time to enroll in health insurance for most people is November 1 through December 15 each year, there are a few exceptions, called special enrollment periods, or SEPs Most people who lose their employee sponsored health insurance will qualify for an SEP. However, individuals must enroll in a new health insurance plan within 60 days before or after they lose their employer insurance. Any licensed, certified health insurance agent, such as the ones pictured on page 3, can help you understand all of the SEP details and enroll in a plan.

on the part of the applicant. Americans are required to buy health insurance. For those who can’t afford it on their own, subsidies are available to people who meet eligibility criteria. *Premium subsidies will be provided to lower the amount of premium the individual or family must pay for their coverage on a month-to-month basis. *Cost-sharing assistance will limit out-of-pocket costs (i.e., deductibles, coinsurance or copayments) that would otherwise be charged at the point of service. In order to obtain health insurance subsidies an individual must be a citizen or national of the United States, or a lawfully present immigrant who files a tax return. If they are eligible for Medicaid or Medicare they generally will not need other insurance coverage.

People who lost or expect to lose their job-based health insurance may be eligible for coverage under the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (Obamacare) based on an existing SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD (SEP) provision.
