A WSRISE Summit will be held today at Winston Salem State University – The Anderson Center, 601 S. Martin Luther King Drive from 9 a. m. to 4 p.m. The Summit will address social determinants of a flourishing community. The WSRISE initiative has identified and convened community working groups in eight areas: Education, Housing; Health, and Wellness; Jobs/Work Force Development, Income; Citizen Responsibility; Criminal Justice; Food Sovereignty; Economic Development. Plans will be developed to close the racial gap in each area. These will be captured in a foundational document: WSRISE – A Blueprint for East Winston, the heart of the city’s vision to transform Winston-Salem by the year 2030 into an inclusive, thriving community. “When we imagine a just economy, where there is nationwide growth in all social determinants, and all people are treated equally, where the same principles apply to all races, we must be mindful that evolution happens over time, not overnight. Let us focus on doing our part and being our best,” said Gloria Hairston, economic/workforce development work group leader. Margaret Robinson, the education workgroup leader, added “The WSRise voice of the community will be heard for generations to come.” Founded in 2019, WSRISE’s mission is to develop and partner with community-led initiatives that eradicate racial disparities for

The vision is for a just community that provides full access to opportunities and prosperity for all its citizens. “WSRISE’s focus on ‘putting Black lives first for a change’ speaks to the reality that we are at the bottom of the economic ladder in almost all the social determinants of health. To change this, we must be intentional in our collaborations and deliberations. We must learn to trust each other and forgive others and ourselves for what has happened in the past,” said Paula McCoy, board chair and civic engagement leader for WSRise. Visit wsrise.org.

We all know that there is a continuing need to improve the health and welfare of Winston-Salem’s underserved communities. That’s why we applaud the excellent work that WSRise and P4P are doing to help meet this need. These organizations have brought together many different individuals and groups with the common goal of raising the standard of living for Winston-Salem citizens.
