Supervisor & Senior Games Coordinator for the City of Winston-Salem, this competition is their flagship event for seniors in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” Vestal said. “I really relish the impact that the Senior Games and the Silver Arts events have on participants and how it makes their lives better in many meaningful ways.” All of the competition categories are open to residents who are 50 or “better.” The competition categories are organized by gender and age: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, etc.

These activities and competitions are unbelievable to watch and experience. It gives everyone such a great opportunity for exercise, competition and camaraderie.” A new playground

To date, Winston-Salem has not received any grants to support the Senior Games and the Silver Arts. But in 2019 the city did receive a $170,000 grant from AARP to build an agefriendly playground at Miller Park. Of the grant amount, $11,000 is reserved for staff instruction so they can be scheduled at the playground to

help people use the equipment. The playground will join three other senior spaces at Miller Park: bocce, petanque and horseshoes. Winston-Salem was one of 20 North Carolina cities that applied for the AARP grant. Only Winston-Salem was selected. “What they saw was our overall community efforts – with the YMCA, Senior Services and other organizations,” Vestal said. “They liked our synergy with senior programs. It was the people and the community that allowed us to win this grant competition.” The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the playground will be at Miller Park at 11 a.m. on May 14. There will be comments from Mayor Allen Joines, AARP representatives and other dignitaries. A national competition

Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, like many parts of the country, are experiencing significant growth in the number of people living within its borders who are 65 years and older.

The 2010 Census found that 45,511 people, 65 and older, live in Forsyth County. That was 13% of the population, 350,670. Between the 2000 Census and 2010 Census, the growth of people 65 and older increased by 18.1%. The 2020 Census will probably show a similar 65-andolder growth pattern. In 2020, U.S. News & World Report said that Winston-Salem was the #7 best city to retire to in the country: It “is a region on an upward trajectory that still maintains its Southern roots,” according to U.S. News & World Report. “We don’t have one department that is devoted to senior services,” said Frank Elliott the Deputy Director of Marketing & Communications for WinstonSalem. “The city strives to ensure that all Winston-Salem citizens receive important city services. In the case of seniors, each department looks at their services and makes sure that they are able to provide them for seniors. That

may mean tailoring individual services for seniors.” What follows is a summary of the important programs that Winston-Salem provides for seniors. If you have any questions, call CityLink at 311 or 336-7278000: FIRE DEPARTMENT

Get active, get healthy with a buddy Regular exercise is important to the physical and mental health of everyone, and becomes increasingly essential as we age. Physical fitness not only produces long-term health benefits but also boosts energy levels, improves mood, increases confidence and can reduce the potential for injuries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults 65 and older get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intense aerobic activity and musclestrengthening activities on two or more days per week[i]. While that may seem like a lot, it only amounts to 20 to 30 minutes each day and even can be broken down into three, 10-minute sessions. “Although many adults in the 50-plus age bracket may think it’s too late to be physically active, FLAGSHIP EVENT, from page 3

it’s important to realize that you can benefit from even brief sessions of movement,” said Dr. Jim McCormick, Regional Vice President of Health Services for Humana. “It can be surprisingly easy to sneak a little bit of extra activity into our lives each day, whether we’re walking the dog, doing yard work, cleaning the house, or even parking in a spot that’s a little farther from the store.” If you need motivation, find an “exercise buddy” or join a class at your local fitness center. Not only can an exercise buddy make activity more fun, it can also double your willpower. In addition to the physical benefits, Dr. McCormick said exercise may have psychological and emotional benefits as well. “Regular physical activity is a great way to reduce anxiety and take your mind off of whatever you may be nervous about –whether it’s your health, bank account or a strenuous relationship – because exercise produces endorphins that help to improve your mood and reduce depression.” Participating in the North Carolina Senior Games as an athlete or a volunteer is another
