A message from the president North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company is one of the greatest stories in American business. Deeply rooted in the communities we serve, the company was often referred to as The Mutual or NC Mutual. Yes, we sold life insurance products, but the company was also an iconic presence in the African American community representing jobs, hope and prosperity. From our beginnings serving the under-served to our role in wealth building and financial literacy in our communities, we have always represented so much

more than life insurance. In 2016, we realized that to grow from these strong roots, we had to offer more to our customers. We listened and we heard our customers’ needs for insurance to protect their families and the other things important to them. We have partnered with top carriers to meet these needs. We now offer products for homes and autos and other coverage to complement our life and pre-need products. We also provide competitive products for businesses and their employees. This broader portfolio of products and services helps to

ensure the financial futures of our customers. To reflect this evolution, we have a new brand – NC Mutual. This change is the next step in moving forward. We are strengthening our roots in North Carolina and focusing new product offerings here, where it all started. In the midst of all this change, our principles are still the same – ensuring that personnel are well-trained and match our corporate needs; that we have the technical capabilities to support our agents and provide stellar customer service to our

policyholders. Community has been a critical part of our success, and we are working within our communities to provide support through financial literacy initiatives, affordable products and employment opportunities. As the world rapidly changes, NC Mutual must also continue to change – creating new partnerships, investing in technology and human capital while providing a portfolio of products to help our customers protect what is important. We invite you to join us as we take this amazing journey to grow together.

Insurance when you need it most NC Mutual has a long, deep-rooted tradition of serving funeral homes. The skills and knowledge within the company have evolved with the funeral industry, enabling NC Mutual to offer new options, new incentives, and new solutions. The Pre-Need sales staff has decades of experience in Pre-Need life insurance and funeral-home services. NC Mutual knows that the priority of funeral homes is helping families who come to them in a time of need. NC Mutual’s primary goal is to help funeral homes provide the best options for families – while minimizing the administrative costs and concerns of funeral homes. NC Mutual can enhance the prearrangement funeral business with

its exclusive marketing program and Pre-Need life insurance plans, backed by top-rated insurance carriers: Homesteaders Life Company and National Guardian Life Insurance Company. NC Mutual’s partnership with these two companies provides access to the best products available, along with superior service. In addition, NC Mutual offers an “Exclusive Guest Resources Marketing System.” The marketing system, which has a hands-on training program, offers funeral homes a thorough and strategic approach to strengthening their marketing capability, growing their customer base, expanding their market share, and increasing their revenues.

The system tracks key metrics within a funeral home’s business, and the contact management marketing system identifies strategic leads. These leads are considered strategic because they target a growing number of individuals who have a greater propensity to pre-arrange funerals than people in the general population. In addition, NC Mutual is committed to the success of the funeral industry. The company provides easy web-based applications so funeral homes can quickly and easily process applications and claims. To learn more about NC Mutual’s Pre-Need life insurance plan options and marketing services, please contact them at: kfloyd@ncmutualagency.com or 800-647-2114, ext.216.

Life-insurance assignments can be problematic for funeral homes Assigning life-insurance benefits to a third party — in this case a funeral home for expenses — can be complicated. Funeral homes would rather accept direct payment from a family, but none will turn away a family when a life-insurance assignment is the family’s only way to pay for a funeral. There are 850 life-insurance companies operating in the U.S., all with varying policies and procedures — and not all companies accept third-party assignments. But most companies do accept funeral-home assignments. Before accepting a funeral, a funeral home must ask the insurance company a series of questions to ensure that they are eligible for full payment. Once these questions have been answered satisfactorily,

the funeral may proceed. But that isn’t the end of potential complications for the funeral home. When the funeral home calls the life-insurance company after the funeral, the funeral home may be told that the check has already been mailed to the beneficiary and that the check has already been cashed — and that the insurance company has no obligation to send funds to the funeral home. In a worst-case scenario, the beneficiary then tells the funeral home that the money has already been spent, leaving the courts as the only recourse. There are many other possible problems that funeral homes have encountered with third-party assignments. The only way that funeral home can

insulate itself from these losses is to factor life-insurance assignments through a reputable, non-recourse life insurance factoring company. Unfortunately, only a few offer nonrecourse funding of life-insurance assignments. Most only offer fullrecourse funding, holding funeral home Kevin Smith Danny Smith owners fully liable for its losses due to insurance-company or other errors, Editor’s Note: Excerpted from an article by including negligence on the part of the life Danny Smith, director of business development insurance factoring company’s employees NC Mutual Financial, LLC, a nationwide life and staff in verifying, processing and insurance funeral funding company and a wholly collecting on life insurance assignments. owned subsidiary of NC Mutual Life Insurance Even when working through fullCompany. Understanding the Affordable Care Act: What it means for you Are you an individual looking for a health insurance plan? Do you want to change the plan you are on? Do subsidies help pay for your insurance? If so, you need to update your subsidy with the Health Insurance Marketplace. Subsidies change every year. The Affordable Care Act provides many benefits: ‘  Dependents may stay on their parents plan until age 26, (the law also states that “dependents” do not have to live with their parents, be claimed as a dependent on tax returns, may be married and do not have to be enrolled in school).  Waiting periods for pre-existing conditions are eliminated. Applicants cannot be turned away for enrollment

based on their health status.  Preventive care and medical screenings are covered in-network at 100%, with no cost sharing. This includes immunizations, U.S. Preventive Services Task Forcerecommended services, and screenings for women, infants, children, and adolescents.  Annual dollar limits on essential benefits are

eliminated.  There are no lifetime dollar limits on essential benefits.  Policies may only be rescinded for fraud or intentional misrepresentation on the part of the applicant or non-payment of premiums. All plans offered on the marketplace provide coverage for essential health benefits,

which are now required by law. For those who can’t afford it on their own, subsidies are available to people who meet eligibility criteria. The Health Insurance Marketplace can provide more information on eligibility.  Premium subsidies are available for those who qualify. They help lower the amount of premium the individual or family must pay for their coverage on a month-tomonth basis.  Some are eligible for cost-sharing assistance that will limit out-of-pocket costs (i.e., deductibles, coinsurance or copayments) that would otherwise be charged at the point of service. A tradition of strength and experience for funeral homes NC Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1898, has always had a close relationship with the funeral industry. Historically, the company partnered with African American funeral homes when they could not secure insurance coverage through the general market, and this relationship has endured for generations. The life insurance company is the nation’s oldest and largest insurance company with roots in

the African American community. They have built a reputation for financial stability and personalized service for policyholders. That personalized service extends to the funeral industry through its PreNeed Insurance and Funeral Funding services. The most recent service that NC Mutual is offering to funeral homes across the nation is a funeral funding service that enables these businesses to assist families in their time of

need without waiting for the families insurance policies to make payments. This service is being championed by Gregory B. Levett Sr., the founder and CEO of one of the most successful funeral homes in the nation, Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory. Levett, a member of the NC Mutual board, owns four funeral homes in the Atlanta area. Levett & Sons is a family owned and operated funeral home founded in 1980. Their

hallmark is providing funeral services that are traditional, thoughtful and dignified. The company has over 100 employees and 10 licensed funeral directors on call 24 hours a day. For more than a century, NC Mutual Life Insurance Company has helped businesses build a vision for the future — through the products it sells, the jobs it provides, and the communities it supports. Goler Community Development Corporation, founded in 1998 with a vision to transform a historic, downtown African American community into a multimillion-dollar mixed-use development has played a role in rejuvenating that area that borders the Innovation Quarter. Those projects include the Goler Family Enrichment Center; Goler Manor senior housing, the Gallery Lofts; eight townhomes on Chestnut Street and the Arts Park at 6th & Chestnut.
