Cooking inspired by friends, family The Dixie Classic Fair receives thousands of entries for its competitions each year. But few competitors have the commitment of Tanisha Randolph, who lives in Winston-Salem. In addition to her job as a food-safety and quality-assurance manager for the Fresh Market, Randolph has entered all of the fair’s Specialty Foods Contests for the past six years. That’s between 11-13 competitions each year or about 75 contests over six years. While Randolph relishes preparing all the dishes, it does keep her up until 1 or 2 a.m. each night during competition week. Ever since her Easy-Bake Oven days, Randolph has felt at home in a kitchen. Her love of cooking was passed to Randolph by her grandmother, and her kitchen creativity comes from her mom — who once made “a huge family meal of ribs, cabbage, and macaroni and

In the past six years Randolph has won 16 ribbons at the Dixie Classic Fair — one blue ribbon, five 2nd-place ribbons, five 4th-place ribbons and one 5th-place ribbon. But she doesn’t enter for the ribbons or the cash prizes. “Whether you win or lose, the fair gives you a chance to step away from your day- to-day job and gives you an opportunity to just have fun,” Randolph said.

Boil until syrup reaches 300 degrees on a candy thermometer or until a little syrup dropped in cold water separates into breakable threads. Remove from heat and stir in cinnamon and food coloring if using. Dip 1 apple completely in the syrup and swirl it around with the stick to coat. Hold the apple above the sauce

Meet Cheryle Hartley, the first woman to lead the 137-year-old fair After studying at Forsyth Tech, new Dixie Classic Fair Director, Cheryle Hartley, became an Accounting Clerk for the City of Winston-Salem LJVM Coliseum. In 1995, she joined the Fairgrounds team as Business Manager, overseeing all accounting and vendors. Ten years later, she was promoted to Assistant Fair Director; and in December 2018, took over the top position from David Sparks to become the Fair’s first female Director. “My goal in the future is to make this the best event in North Carolina, so we will keep stepping up our game. I would also like to see more youth participation and community involvement.” “I grew up going to this Fair, so when it comes around each year, it brings very fond memories,” said Hartley. “My job involves directing our staff and a very large group of

volunteers to pull together every aspect of the event, including selling spaces, coordinating vendors, display and judging of exhibits , maintaining the property, finding and contracting with great entertainment, making it easy for people to come to the Fair and ensuring the safety of everyone while here.” You can now purchase tickets online and have them available on your phone—no more paper tickets are required. The Dixie Classic Fair App has been updated so you can determine what you’d like to do when you arrive. New this year, the Fair has partnered with the FanPark app to offer VIP reserved parking off of Shorefare Drive NW, between 27th and 30th Streets, for $16 per day (up to 7PM daily, limited to 200 slots per day). Fairgoers also will experience upgraded security scans and bag checks upon entry. “Safety has always

been our primary concern. We have some of the best ride inspection procedures in the country. Adding scanning upon entry is just one more level of protection for everyone at the Fair.” Hartley and her team have won multiple awards from the International Association of Fairs & Expos In 2016, Hartley herself received the prestigious HolmesMcBride Memorial Award from the NC Association of Agricultural Fairs (NCAOAF) for her “Dedicated Service to Humanity. The 10-day annual Fair features nationally renowned musical entertainment, delicious food and beverages, exhibits for livestock, poultry, fine arts and crafts, a worldclass carnival with numerous rides and games, and many more activities. 97.1 Night at the Fair 97.1 QMG Night at the Fair: Join Midnight Star and 97.1 QMG on Monday night October 7th for all their classic Hits. They have promised a show to keep you on your feet and out of your seats! Concert is free with the purchase of a Dixie Classic Fair Admission ticket. The R&B techno funk sound of Midnight Star is back! Presented by WQMG-FM and performing in the Grandstand on Monday, October 7, at 7:30PM, the band formed at Kentucky State University in 1976 as a party band. When they signed with Solar Records, they produced a series of hit albums, including The Beginning, Standing Together, and Victory. The certified, double Platinum Plus album, No Parking on the Dance Floor, established MIDNIGHT STAR as worldrenowned songwriters, producers, and entertainers, pouring out streams of Top 10 and No. 1 hits. It began in 1983 with dance-floor smashes, like “Freak-a-Zoid,” “No Parking on the

Dance Floor,” “Wet My Whistle,” and the lovers’ ballad of the mid-80s, “Slow Jam.” Planetary Invasion (1985) took them to No. 1 with “Operator” and “Curious”. In 1986 MIDNIGHT STAR struck gold with the chartbuster, “Midas Touch.” The year of 1988 rowed them to the top once again with the No. 1 “Don’t Rock the Boat” (which featured rapper Ecstasy of Whodini) and the top 10 “Snake in the Grass” from their self-titled CD. MIDNIGHT STAR broke into the 90s with the smash “Do It (One More Time)” from their Work It Out CD. After extensive international touring, some of the

members decided to pursue various other projects, working with the likes of Toni Braxton, Shanice Wilson, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and others. So, what can we expect from MIDNIGHT STAR today? Vocalist Belinda Lipscomb adds, “We will hit the stage with the high energy performance that we are known for, remembering all the things that were so special about the group…letting everybody’s light shine.”

#HowDoYouFair This year’s theme for the Dixie Classic Fair is How Do You Fair. We are encouraging the public to get engaged with the fair by telling us what they enjoy most about the fair. For example, when they post pictures on social media of their favorite rides, fair food and attractions, they use the hashtag #HowDoYouFair to let the world know. By using this hashtag, they automatically enter themselves for a chance to be featured on dcfair.com – we will have a live Instagram feed on the home page of dcfair.com for people that use the hashtag. We also encourage people who are entering special contests or having their ‘craft’ displayed at the fair to use the hashtag. This year we encourage people to download the Dixie Classic Fair to receive updates on what’s happening at the fair once they arrive

FanPark is a Winston-Salem parking startup run by former Wake Forest baseball player Logan Harvey and his father, Ken. Logan developed the idea for FanPark in an entrepreneurship course while he was a junior at Wake Forest and established the business his senior year after realizing the hassles involved in finding parking spaces. FanPark lets parking spaces be reserved ahead of time for special events, allowing fans to have a better experience at the special event. Now, as a graduate, he runs FanPark from the 4th Floor of Winston Starts, a startup incubator located in the 500 W 5th Street in Winston-Salem.
