LYNNE POWELL Editor

WHO doesn’t love a mystery? We were already hooked when the Worcestershire Archive & Archaeology Service told us about its Vale Market Gardening Heritage project and asked us to share the news with our readers. We were even more intrigued when we discovered that there was a fascinating time capsule involved. You can read all about it inside... and you could help to solve an irresistible puzzle. This month also holds another enigma. Noone can agree on the exact origins of April Fools’ Day. Was it 1582, when France switched to the Gregorian calendar, and some fools didn’t catch on? Or the Greek/Roman festival Hilaria? Maybe we’ll leave the last work to Mark Twain: “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.” Meanwhile, hearty congratulations to Evesham Festival of Words, which is celebrating record numbers of entries for its short story competition. And high five to our own Alan Coxon who has seized the day (whichever one it is) to launch his latest food innovation, a Brie-xit© cheese. It’s inspired by the French prince Talleyrand, whose cheese was declared a winner in a European challenge. Tasty!

Creative does it again!

MORE than 500 of England’s elite Hair & Beauty professionals gathered at The St. John's Hotel at Solihull, near Birmingham, on Sunday March 3 for a glitzy night, put on to acknowledge the best of the country’s hair and beauty industry. The star-studded evening was hosted by BBC Leicester broadcaster, Emma Boydell. Following 2018’s major success - where Tracey and the team were awarded Customer Service of the year for the West Midlands along with a highly commended award for Hazel in the Colour Technician of the year category - Creative was again fortunate enough to be a finalist at the 2019 The English Hair & Beauty Awards in two categories: Most Wanted Hair Salon and Hair Salon of the Year. After narrowly missing out on Most Wanted Hair Salon, and in the final award of the evening, the Creative team was

honoured to receive the 2019 Hair Salon of the Year award for the West Midlands. Salon owner Tracey Davies explained: “After last year’s awards we were stunned to be nominated again and even more amazed

to be finalists in the two biggest categories. “We have had another fantastic year in the salon, with more and more clients choosing Creative for all their hair and beauty needs. “Winning Hair Salon of the Year is a magnificent achievement for the whole team

and is a reflection of their amazing skills and dedicated hard work. “However, this is just the next phase for Creative as we never stand still, we’re always moving forwards. “Most recently we have relaunched our website, introduced some fantastic beauty services and Hazel will be completing her Master of Colour qualification in 2019.” Success, however, is leaving Creative with another challenge, finding more amazing staff to join the journey and ensure the very highest of standards are exceeded. Do you think you are good enough to join this multi award winning team? Creative is always seeking the very best and are dedicated to what they do. If you have what it takes to deliver outstanding hair then please get in touch. FROM THE CREATIVE TEAM

Vale hovels will become special heritage hubs Three of the Vale’s unique hovels are to be turned into visitor attractions as part of a two year Market Gardening Heritage project. They include a chanced-upon time capsule with a whiff of the Marie Celeste mystery. Intrigued? We were... WHEN a Vale market gardener strode out one day, leaving his specs on the book he was reading, he didn’t have a clue that he would cause such a stir decades later. The mystery grower, who closed his Cleeve Prior hovel door some time in the 1980s, never returned to collect his stuff, including tools and those glasses. Now his artifacts and story are to be forever immortalised as part of a major project to document and celebrate our Vale market gardening heritage... providing researchers and our readers can help track down him or his family. The astonishing discovery of the time capsule, which was buried under brambles, is one of the early highlights of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic England-funded project. It’s run by Worcestershire Archive & Archaeology Service (WAAS), in partnership

with Cleeve Prior Heritage Trust, Vale Landscape Heritage Trust, Worcestershire Farmsteads Project and Cleeve Prior Parish Council. Heaps of other local organisations are getting involved too. It is being fuelled by legions of volunteers who are being trained by WAAS to survey the hovels, record local memories on what market gardening was like in its hey day and help with research. At the end of its life, next summer, the project will produce a host of archivable

materials that will be an interactive record of the Vale’s rich market gardening history for all time. “It’s not just about the growers themselves, but about the associated businesses and the whole Vale way of life they fed,” explains archaeologist Nina O'Hare, the WAAS Community Project Officer, based at Worcester’s The Hive. “Traditionally most of them were supported by their wives and children and those who weren’t directly involved often

worked in related industries, ranging from transport firms to canning factories, tool making or in greengrocers. “The Vale should be immensely proud of its market gardening heritage. Through sheer hard work it became one of the key fruit and vegetable growing areas of the country, specialising in asparagus and leading in the use of new techniques and crops such as medicinal herbs during WW1 and now the current juneberry crop near Pershore, which is the first in the UK. “It’s an immensely rewarding project to be part of, not least because it will involve such a lot of the current Vale community,” adds Nina, who plans, amongst other things, a Local Heritage Education Pack for schools. To kick off, volunteers have been busy searching for those unique little buildings known locally as hovels, or ‘ovels. Just a few remain of the 1300 that once stood proud

at the end of each market gardener’s ground. Each was self-built in materials ranging from bricks to wood and corrugated iron... anything the practical chap could lay his green fingers on. “They are each different, which is what’s so lovely about them,” says Nina. “It’s such a shame that a lot of them are falling down, have disappeared altogether or have been built on. There were a lot on the outskirts of Evesham town, for instance, much of which is now housing development.” But three are to be restored: our mystery man’s in Cleeve Prior, on land owned by the village’s Heritage Trust, and two in the Littletons, belonging to the Vale Landscape Heritage Trust. They are to be transformed into heritage hubs accessible to the public, who will be

able to read all about the history and, hopefully, the former incumbent, via interpretation boards and an augmented reality smartphone app. “It will allow people to directly experience and explore this heritage, as well as inform newcomers and visitors to the area, who may not know of its rich history,” adds Nina, who is eager for more volunteers to come on board. “We’re also looking for people happy to share their market gardening memories and if someone owns a hovel in the Evesham area, and would be happy for us survey it, we’d love to hear from them too.” You can email the team at explorethepast@worcestershire.gov.uk or telephone 01905 766352 to offer your help. Website www.explorethepast.co.uk includes details of a raft of project-related events already on the cards. They include a training session for volunteers on April 25 at Evesham Library and a Badsey Walk (April 27, 1-4pm) to explore the historic heart of market gardening. A Pensham Walk (May 30, 1-4pm) will discover how villagers’ relationship with the land has changed over time, from 17th century tobacco growing to the rise of market gardening and future of horticulture at the neighbouring Pershore College. There will also be a market gardening memories event at Evesham Town Hall on July 6, 11am-2pm).

Hopefully somebody somewhere knows because everyone is exceedingly eager to discover all they can about Mr ER Wheeler. He left some fascinating clues. He was clearly a marrowfat pea lover (evidenced by many empty tins). He enjoyed a good read (unfortunately that book he left is now in tatters) and he was a Birmingham City fan (presumably, as there was a programme there). He has pieced together what lay beneath the fertile ground of Mr Wheeler’s ground, using the documents left behind. were hauled off to Covent Garden, Birmingham and Coventry markets. Ian’s done a bit of digging himself. Thanks to local man Don Archer he can tell us that market gardening came to Cleeve Prior in the mid twenties, when acres of the Manor Estate were sold to the county council. Much of it was taken up by market gardeners and aye, there’s the rub. You might think it would be pretty easy to unearth Mr Wheeler’s story by quizzing villagers. However, most market gardeners had grounds all over the Vale. It is suspected our man might have hailed from the Littletons. If readers have any inkling of who he was, Ian and the team would love to hear from

you. You can email him at cleevepriorchroniclers@gmail.com. Meanwhile, the Heritage Trust is busy preparing the ground around Mr Wheeler’s hovel, which also sports a jaunty verandah and is next to a well, which is to be opened up. The volunteers have already rescued his vine, which produced a gallon of wine last year and as I wrote this, his asparagus was shooting up again. Hopefully Mr Wheeler would approve. Certainly villagers are toasting what his heritage hub will bring. “We should mark local history and we welcome anything that will increase the footfall here,” says Brian, who invites readers to pop along any Tuesday to see the Trust at work. “It also fits nicely with our ultimate goal, which is to try to use our facilities primarily for education. “We aim, eventually, to put up remote cameras around our orchards to get footage of the wildlife for natural history tourism.” “What’s really special,” adds Ian, “is that ER Wheeler’s story will be celebrated for ever when we find out who he is!” LYNNE POWELL Photos by Ian Tustin

Glorious dirt! SO, how clean is clean? Nowadays we’re able to keep as zingy as we like. Skin, hair, teeth and nether-bits can all be scrubbed and deodorised to an unnatural degree by the sophisticated products of big pharma. I say unnatural because we were never intended to be as squeaky as we now choose to be. Mother Nature designed us to stink like the animals we are, producing strong pheromones with which to snare a mate, plus individual smells of recognition to warn off rivals. This remained the case right up until the 20th century, when some sensitive soul decided it might be a good time to invent deodorant. Some anthropologists say that splashing on the Brut masks our personal chemicals of sexual attraction. I’ll take that bullet. I’m a huge fan of Mother Nature but will gladly reduce my chances of being stalked by besotted supermodels to ensure I never suffer the mortifying embarrassment of skunky armpits: You KNOW you stink and you KNOW that everyone within hooter shot knows you stink, so you walk about with your arms clamped to your sides.

Such aromas, although nowadays far from peachy, had been accepted since Neanderthal Man to the Victorians. There were always powders and perfume available to the gentry (apparently Napoleon soaked

himself in 4711 to staunch his garlicky sweat), but in the main, the world of yesteryear smelt, shall we say, gamey? Effective sanitation and personal hygiene are fairly modern innovations. Even after WW2 many people were restricted to a once a week bath, if at all, while showers were unheard of unless it rained.

Bathing for many was a weekend ritual, often involving the whole family. Water was boiled in sufficient quantities to fill a tin tub in front of the living room fire, whence the family would wait their turn. Dad was first in (as a manual worker he was the muckiest), followed by Mom and then the kids, gradually converting clean hot water to urban riverbed sludge. A single weekly change of encrusted underwear was the norm. Fleas, head-lice and ringworm were accepted as part of life’s deal. Hygiene standards in most cafés and restaurants would now be regarded as woeful. It’s astonishing to think that smoking in enclosed public places was only banned in 2006. The thought of sitting at a table in the company of a full ashtray with the air thick with smoke is now abhorrent. Butchers’ shops with sawdust-sprinkled floorboards to sop up blood were still around in the 1980s. We produce far more rubbish nowadays but our refuse collections are at long last veering towards sanitised re-cycling. Years ago all trash went into a single grungy galv

we’ve made the mistake of trying to blitz every nasty with antibiotics, which are gradually proving useless to ever-mutating viruses. But never fear! Some visionary Frankenstein has now come up with a new idea to boost the human immune system: Fecal Microbiota Transplant. Yep, it’s as ghastly as it sounds and involves transplanting healthy poo from one individual to another in order to boost their bacteriological resistance to disease. The great hope is that this will end the arms-race between antibiotics and superbugs by turning us all into Superman: Man of Stool. ROB HEMMING

dustbin, which was eventually disintegrated by water and hot ashes. Also consider old public telephones, every last one a virologist’s paradise. And as for pre-seventies’ public toilets, many were neglected hell-holes... by ’eck, I’m glad I’m a man. Yet there’s a flip side to this coin. The human body still crawls with germs, no matter how hard we scrub ourselves. We NEED to absorb a certain amount of dirt otherwise our natural bodily defences against infections and illness become impaired. Simple cuts and grazes or mere interaction with other humans (plus their many malaises) help to strengthen our immune system. So the next time some revolting slob sneezes his cold in your face, instead of exploding, better to shake his hand and offer thanks that he is ensuring you a long and healthy life. Now consider cash, passing through countless icky mitts, possibly the filthiest of all modern tools of convenience and yet each penny is arguably a small life saver. In contrast, much supermarket food, convenient as it may be, is often prepared and packaged with such sterility it affords greatly reduced micro-nutrient value. With the reduction in raw health benefit of our grub, we are at risk of becoming prey to all manner of coughs and colds. In response

Ahead of the game TO those who clamoured so loudly for technology to resolve those indecisive decisions, all I can say is be careful what you wish for. The goal line technology is a given. The whole of the ball is either over the line or not. But VAR. Ooh! Ah! VAR, the answer to every aggrieved fan’s prayer? Tell that to the Paris fans. Most of us, apart from a few on the other side of Manchester and in Merseyside, would agree that Kimpembe blocked Dalot’s shot. Despite the VAR review and many, many replays not everyone concurred and you felt a little sorry for PSG, until Mr Neymar’s rant. I only hope we don’t follow the lead of cricket and American football, where appeals are allowed and drag out proceedings. The prospect of our beautiful game being slowed down to a three hour video replay contest, like some American footie games, is mind numbing. Meanwhile, what about the FA cup? All sympathies to Millwall goalie David Martin, but what a nail biting finish, into added time and then penalties that swung one way and then the other. Edge of the seat stuff. Then Wolves beat the resurgent Man U. Not so long ago if that had happened it would have been a cup tie goal against the run of play and defending to the death. Not

so now. Nuno’s team played good, organised, skilful football, in no way overawed, in front of a happy home crowd that probably still can’t believe just how good life in the premiership can be. Over there, Germany, Spain and Italy, once the great names in European football, are in the process of rebuilding after dismal performances in the World Cup. Thanks to our disaster happening earlier, we are ahead of the game for once, with a young squad who can hold their heads up in any company, and play with a confidence not seen in an England team for some time. Jadon Sancho’s alleged hefty price tag shows how far they have come, and how wonderful to see an England shirt holder being mentioned in the same breath as Kylian Mbappé as part of the next generation of magicians. Our lads put in a superb performance against the Czech Republic. Free flowing, quick passing and Gareth's faith in Sterling is paying off big time. More of the same against Montenegro. It can only bode well for next year, although if we get any younger we'll have to get permission from the headmaster to play.

BIRD OF THE MONTH

Mistle Thrush and other early singers THE warm and sunny weather in February persuaded quite a few common birds to sing. In a tall hedge by my garden a very glossy Starling poured forth an amazing continuous stream of whistles, chatters, pops and wheezes. These local breeders have developed yellow bills and abrasion has worn their throat feather buff tips away to reveal a beautiful gloss. They are in full breeding plumage and ready for nesting. The winter Starlings visiting from Europe, meanwhile, are still quite drab. One or two local Blackbirds have tried a few notes, perhaps encouraged by loud repetitive short burst from Song Thrushes. Taking advantage of warmer days, some Blackbirds have already built a nest and are incubating eggs. But it will be touch and go for their survival. Blackbirds always try for an early brood if conditions are good and when it comes off a pair may raise three or even four broods in a summer. They are then very worn and tatty and hide in bushes and hedges while moulting,

over a couple of months, into a good solid waterproof plumage for the winter. Dunnocks also sang for a while, usually from the depths of big hedges: an even reedling song without much structure. The males often attract more than one mate into their territory or visit a second females nearby. Dunnocks are

complicated, with both sexes sometimes having one or several mates. Robins tried a few short songs but still the rather melancholy winter one, rather than the more determined territorydefending song. Great Tits sang a few tentative ‘tea-cher, tea-cher’. And the local House Sparrow

colony became very noisy on and off, but the wet and windy March weather rather turned them off! However, the main songsters that caught my ear were Mistle Thrushes. Their territorial song is delivered with vigour (it can be heard a mile away) from high trees. It sounds like a mixture of Blackbird and Song Thrush with often repeated phrases which, to my ear, are more melodious than the strident bellowing of a Song Thrush! They also have a very characteristic harsh, rattling alarm call when disturbed. They used to be called Storm Cocks, because they often sing in late winter whatever the weather, facing strong winds in the treetops. However, although they sang quite strongly across the village in February, the ensuing March days of wind and rain quietened them down, despite their second name. Mistle Thrushes nest early in the year, often in February and March and usually placing the nest on a stout branch of a

tree, where it is quite well hidden even though the leaves have yet to open. The nest is a substantial structure rather like a large Blackbird’s, of twigs, grasses, mosses, with mud in the wall. The clutch of 4-5 eggs is incubated for about a fortnight and the young fledge in a similar period. After fledging, the family parties wander in search of food but there are no migratory movements. The breeding territories are large and they prefer a scattering of big trees and open grassland. They are particularly fond of parkland or towns and villages where there is the right combination of trees and open country. In appearance, the Mistle Thrush is slightly larger and greyer than the Song Thrush... greyish brown above, white under the wing, where the Song Thrush is golden. They have round spots on the flanks and breast, whereas they are heartshaped on the Song Thrush. Mistle Thrushes feed their young on a wide range of invertebrates, usually collected from the ground amongst short

grass – small snails (they do not break snails on a stone anvil like Song Thrushes), earthworms, centipedes, beetle and fly larvae, grasshoppers and others. Through the year the diet is a mixture of invertebrates taken from the ground, and berries – hawthorn, ivy, holly, rowan, garden shrubs, and mistletoe. In winter they will often guard a berry laden bush and drive off other berry eaters. This food supply is usually eaten late in winter and gives them a good boost in time for breeding.

In cold, frosty weather their defences may be breached by flocks of other hungry berry eaters, especially Redwings and Fieldfares. These are winter visitors from Scandinavia and tend to keep away from gardens if there is food elsewhere but a small flock can strip the berries from a garden holly bush in a morning. When available, mistletoe berries are an important food supply, eaten mainly in February and March. The berry contains small seeds surrounded by very sticky material. They are swallowed whole and the seeds deposited in a sticky mess with the bird’s droppings. At times they inadvertently transfer the seed to a new host tree, although often miss a suitable growing site as droppings are scattered far and wide.

They may start to germinate on overhead wires but don’t survive long! Mistletoe clumps high up in poplar and lime trees usually arise from Mistle Thrush droppings. Wintering Blackcaps also play an important role is dispersing mistletoe lower down, especially in old apple orchards. They are more secretive and open the berries, swallow the skin and pulp, and leave the seed stuck to a branch or twig where it has a chance of germinating and invading the tree. Aquarius: Follow your instincts wherever they may lead you. But watch out for the hazard lights ahead and stay in the safe lane. Pisces: This is not the time to get adventurous. Take things calmly and try to stay in a reasonable frame of mind when cleaning even as you remember that nature abhors a vacuum. Aries: If you find that there are too many slips between cup and lip then use a straw for your pint. Taurus: Trying too hard to dig up your past might lead to unearthing a hoard of unsavoury Saxon relatives. Runic Ron found his ancestors includes Odo the Midden Keeper who married Martha the Entrail Sorter. Gemini: Don’t get stung by your differences, become a source of conflict and argument instead. Find a common way by accepting that beauty is in the eye of the bee holder. Cancer: In these tough times you might feel that you are only just getting by. On the M42 that’s success. Leo: Minor conflict and argument within the family may be causing you stress and pain you could do without. Settle things down with an emphatic gesture by putting everyone on the naughty step. Larger families might need to squeeze up a bit, thus hastening resolution. Virgo: Not a good month for indulging in self-pity. Get someone to pity you for you. Libra: A noteworthy period of your life. Bottom C or an F flat should do the trick. Avoid anything sharp if you want to find harmony. Scorpio: Revealing too much of yourself could lead to a chilly reception this early in the year. Sagittarius: You might be disappointed with fewer of the results you might have expected after so much effort and commitment. Mothers in law are such demanding creatures and no one makes custard like her. Fact. Capricorn: Just remember you are worth every penny that has been spent on you. But just tell that cheapskate to start flashing the pounds!

WESTMINSTER PREDICTIONS Conservatives: Sticking to a simple nouvelle cuisine of minimalist ingredients and selected cutlets at the Brexit Blues Bistro whist the party argues over the side orders Labour: The Witches of Millbank are concocting an opposition menu: Eye of Corbin, toe of Mac and hair of shirt presented on a platter of confused platitudes. Liberal Democrats: Planning a bumper feast with a proportional menu but can they be persuaded to participate in a shared lunch with nine surprise guests? The Others: Only interested in the Whine List. The Lords: An 800-year-old dish which is beginning to go off a bit. When is its sell by date?

COOKING with COXON

A very tasty month EGGS, hares, rabbits, lambs, chickens, pigs and chocolate... take your pick, it’s Easter! I find the month of April quite exciting. Summer’s beckoning, plants and bulbs are exposing fresh new green bits (I don’t like to get too technical!), whilst pink and white blossom bring life and colour to the trees... prior to scattering like confetti in the breeze. We also have Easter, named after the pagan goddess Eostre, where we celebrate with eggs to represent new birth.

In Northern Europe Easter imagery often involves hares and rabbits. One theory as to why we have bunnies is an apparent Leicestershire folk custom, where “the profits of the land, called Harecrop Leys, were applied to providing a meal for the villages. The catch was then thrown on the ground at the Hare-pie Bank”. Now bunnies are stacked neatly on shelves in chocolate form, wrapped in gold foil and cosying up to the egg shapes. Incidentally those rabbits, in gold foil bearing a red ribbon, have been in production for 66 years, created in 1952 by the Lindt Master Chocolatier. Today they sell more than 135 million of them. Cadbury’s chocolate bantams lay more than 500 million Creme Eggs every year, which apparently equates to 3.5 for every person in the country. Lambing season also fully springs into action around now. In past centuries it was considered a lucky omen to meet a lamb at Easter time.

There’s a superstition that the devil, who could take the form of all other animals, was never allowed to appear in the shape of a lamb because of its religious symbolism. Elsewhere in the world, such as Thailand, April signifies the New Year, owing to the solar cycles and the start of a new one. The Thai calendar shares similarities to that of the Chinese (who celebrated their new year back in February), using the same symbols. Hence Thailand also welcomes in the year of the pig this month. All we need to do now is throw in some delicious April crops - such as local asparagus, Jersey Royal new potatoes, spring onions, samphire, spring greens, rhubarb and even wild nettle - and we have a veritable feast on our hands! Happy Easter everyone. Alan xx www.alancoxon.com

ASIAN STYLE BELLY OF PORK WITH STICKY DIPPING SAUCE Serves 6-8 INGREDIENTS 1 piece of pork belly, weighing 2-3kg 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves, roughly chopped 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, roughly chopped 30grm Chinese five spice 2 star anise

1 stick cinnamon 1 head of garlic, cloves peeled and crushed 150ml olive oil 1/2 bottle of crisp dry white wine Coarse sea salt and black pepper

METHOD 1. Heat the oven to 250°C/Gas Mark 10 or its highest setting. 2. Place the herbs, garlic and olive oil in a heavy-duty blender or food processor and purée them roughly. 3.Use your hands to spread the herb mixture evenly all over the base of the belly meat, pressing it on so it sticks to the meat. Then sprinkle over the five spice, add the cinnamon stick and star anise. 4. Turn the belly skin-side up and wipe the skin dry with kitchen paper. 5. Using a very sharp knife, score the skin rind, ensuring the cuts are made closely together, and sprinkle sea salt evenly all over the skin, once again massaging the salt into the cuts. 6. Put the tray in the oven and roast for 1 hour, turning the tray around every 20 minutes. 7. Once the skin has formed some crackling, turn the oven down to 170°C/Gas Mark 3, pour a little white wine into the tray (avoiding the pork skin) and continue roasting for another hour. If the belly starts turning dark, cover it with foil. 8. For the last cooking stage, turn the oven down to 110°C/Gas Mark ¼ and continue roasting for another hour, until the skin has crackled completely and thoroughly dried. 9. Remove the pork from the oven and leave to cool slightly before carving. Serve with sticky dipping sauce.

STICKY DIPPING SAUCE INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp vegetable oil Pinch of salt and pepper 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and minced 1 red chilli (finely diced) 2 tbsp clear honey 2 tbsp brown sugar 3 tbps soy sauce 1 tsp lemon grass (finely shredded) 1 clove garlic crushed in a little salt

METHOD 1. Heat the oil in a heavy based pan. 2. Add all the remaining ingredients and stir well until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce is bubbling. 3. Once it has reached consistency, remove from heat and serve a little with the pork.

Celebrating a big anniversary THE Air Training Corps (ATC) celebrates its 78th birthday this year, and as one of the early ones (I joined in 1943), I felt an article was in order to mark this very proud record. Some years ago I was thrilled to design the badge for today’s Pershore No. 233 squadron. It incorporates the famous Lockheed Hudson and Dougls C-47 Dakotas. From March 5 in 1944 to June 8 1945 the squadron was based at RAF Blakehill Farm in Wiltshire. It was also the home base for the brave WAFF Air Ambulance Medical Orderlies, known as the ‘Flying Nightingales’, who soared in C-47 Dakotas.

Reduce your costs

My picture, entitled The Years Between, depicts highlights our local ATC squadrons’ training and flying duties. The group picture shows our original 1941 uniform with the uniforms of 2019. It’s wonderful to see girls in our ranks today. I keep wondering where on earth the last 78 years have gone, but drawing my pictures have bought back so many wonderful memories. These few words are in memory of my three great friends - Ted Hemming, Ken Baldwin and Derek Perkins. Together we ‘Ventured Adventure’ all those years ago. MICHAEL J BARNARD

“April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain.” From The Waste Land, by TS Eliot.

Willersey wonder We wend round lovely Willersey and Saintbury on this walk. The former has grown a deal since the Domesday Book recorded “16 villagers, 4 smallholders, 2 slaves and 1 priest”, according to the website www.willersey.org, which reports that there were 816 residents. by 2011. WE are heading off from the popular Cotswold village of Willersey, just one mile north of Broadway. Park in the main street and make your way to the duck pond opposite the Bell Inn. If you’re lucky you may spot mother ducks leading their young through the village... with scant regard for passing traffic. You, however, should carefully cross the road and walk down Church Street, pass into the churchyard and go diagonally left, passing the church on your right. Exit the churchyard through a couple of gates on your left. Walk down to, and through, a kissing gate.

Follow the path between the fence and hedge and then go through a large open field, keeping close to the hedge on your left. At the end of the field go into an old orchard and head diagonally across to hop over a stile. Carefully cross the road and follow the drive (marked Private Road). You’ll have some nice views over Willersey and the Vale of Evesham on your right. Go through a double gate 1 and follow the drive to the right and then straight on at the next. Continue through a small car park and, just a little further on, follow a sign down some steps on your right.

Vale Magazine 36

Walk diagonally across the field, passing a small lake on your right. Now follow the sign straight on towards Broadway. Continue past a memorial bench. on your left, through a couple of fields, keeping close to the hedge on your left. You should be able to see the village of Broadway in the distance. You’ll come to a section that is sometimes used to keep horses. At the time of writing it was very easy to navigate our way through the temporary fencing. Follow the arrow straight on, keeping close to the wooden fence on your right. This section can be very muddy at times.

WALK CHECKLIST Length: 4 miles. Time: 2 hours. Parking: In Willersey village centre. Equipment: Boots, a waterproof coat and a drink Suitability: Medium with some hill walking, one very steep slippery section near Saintbury Church. CAUTION: We test all walks before publication, but obviously readers undertake them at their own risk.

Follow the arrow downhill and then diagonally right. Look for, and go through, the gate and then through the churchyard, passing the church on your left. Exit via a small gate and then turn immediately left. Negotiate a kissing gate and then keep close to the fence on your right as you head downhill. Walk down, through another gate and follow the arrow through a small enclosed field. Again, head straight on across the field and through the gate before turning left. Walk just a short distance, go over stile and stone footbridge. Turn right here and retrace your steps back to Willersey. Words and Photos by IAN TUSTIN

Go through a metal gate, turn left, go through another and turn left again. Press on until you reach a gate. 2 Go through and follow the blue public bridleway sign straight on. Head through another gate and walk uphill, keeping close to the fence on your left. Continue climbing and you’ll cross a drive. Just a little further up look for, and follow, the arrow on the gatepost to your left. Press on along a narrow path through the trees. You’ll soon see a Broadway Golf Club sign asking you to keep to the bridleway for your safety. The golf course is on your right. Follow the well defined path until you reach a road. Carefully cross and head up over a stile. Follow the arrow straight on across the field. You’ll go slightly downhill and past an arrow on a fence post on your right. 3 Press on, keeping close to the hedge on your right. You’ll soon see the spire of Saintbury church down in front of you. Just before you reach the church, head through the gate on your right and go into the wood. Take extra care here as this section is very steep and can be very slippery when wet.

THINKE RS’ CORNER

Are we capable of change? I recently attended the talk in Evesham about ways the climate is changing and what contributions we could make. It was well attended, the talk was interesting and it culminated in working groups to promote local projects, such as dealing with plastics and eating local food. It was a commendable response to facilitate environmental improvements. However, there is still one inconvenient truth: humans. There are technically many ways to reduce the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere. An obvious one is to consume less. Let’s assume we halt the rise in carbon dioxide to keep the increase of atmospheric temperature to 1.5 degrees centigrade as recommended by the IPCC (International Panel for Climate Change) in 12 years. What then? The problem is always there, waiting to happen, sparking possibly more reactions. But what we have to do is find ways of making this sort of change sustainable and manageable. That means changing the way WE all live, and that means changing human nature... an inconvenient truth. As humans have evolved, so have culture and the power of our brains, enabling us to deal with the more complex realities of survival. It has also involved the formation of society, agriculture, industrialisation, development of weapons as well as more sophistication in the arts. I would argue that the Beast of Change is now running out of control, even with AI (artificial intelligence) to assist. Our cognitive capacity is not mastering change. Last month there was tabled in the House of Commons, a debate on Climate Change. “At last, MPs are going to have a meaningful debate on something vital for our survival,” I hear you say. Wrong. The number of MPs who DIDN’T turn up was 610! Climate Change is about REAL catastrophe. Fires, floods, droughts and tornadoes are observable facts. But silly bickering and character assassinations are apparently more important.

Recent articles, both in the Guardian and the New Scientist, highlighted some interesting ideas on the difficulty in changing human nature. Neuroscientist Kris De Meyer is gathering data on why we cling to our gut beliefs, against all contrary evidence. He asks that if humans have the capacity for reason, why do we make so many bad decisions? Social psychologist Leon Festinger said, from his 1950s’ work on the human desire to be consistent, that we compare ourselves with others in order to evaluate our own opinions and abilities. We seek to move towards consensus and ostracise individuals with opposing views. Or entrench our own (think of Prime Minister’s question time). We are all prone to various kinds of bias and prey to conformation bias - listening to opinions we want to hear, whether it’s religion, party politics or whatever. Another form of bias is cognitive dissonance: where we have the discomfort of two conflicting ideas, we tend to choose the less painful, dismissing the evidence to the contrary. Daniel Kahnerman, a Nobel prize winner in the 1970s, showed we are subjected to a whole range of biases. For instance ‘framing’, in the way we present facts: 95% fat free food, rather than it contain 5% fat. Being clever doesn’t protect us from flawed thinking. According to David Robson, in an article in the New Scientist, poor decisions rely too heavily on intuitive rather than deliberative thinking even though the person involved has the capacity for abstract reasoning. So how can we influence and persuade others? One psychological study and colleagues found only 22% of participants solved reasoning tasks on their own. In small groups, improvements went to 63%. Collective intelligence. But even here, if groups have one or two over zealous members who impose, it can stifle reasoning. Better to have groups with

greater equality. Interpersonal dynamics matter more than average IQ. So returning to changing humans and our way of life: we need, it seems, greater informed debate. Not like the House of Commons and Brexit. Perhaps we should just put up with the fire and floods! At least we know where we are. To balance my own bias, I do realise that there are forces for good working to save our planet. They deserve our help. Now. TONY LANE

Making a big difference, in memory of Pete Sandra Francis has become a fund and awareness-raising powerhouse for Pancreatic Cancer Action in memory of her precious husband. She tells Maureen Butler her story. “WHEN I searched my husband’s symptoms on the internet my blood ran cold. “It was literally like iced water running through my veins,” recalls Sandra Francis, who lost her beloved Pete to pancreatic cancer six years ago “I remember thinking ‘I can’t go into the next room and tell Pete this’. So I waited until the next morning and phoned Pancreatic Cancer Action. “I got through to the CEO Ali Stunt, who had survived pancreatic cancer herself. She had been diagnosed early enough to be able to have an operation, called a Whipple, to remove the tumour. Ali’s advice was to get back to our GP immediately to ask for further tests.” It was a Sunday in September 2011 when the seriousness of Pete’s condition became apparent. The roof gutters needed clearing and, strangely, Pete felt too weak and dizzy to go up the ladder. “He was a BT engineer and had never had problems with ladders, but he called our son Tim to come and do it for him.”

Meanwhile their daughter Ruth, being a nurse, produced a ‘pee stick’ from her handbag (“As you do!” smiles Sandra) and tested for sugar levels. The results were off the scale.

One of Sandra’s favourite photos of her and Pete.

Pete saw his GP the next day and he was diagnosed with diabetes. “That OK, I thought,” says Sandra. “We can cope with diabetes.

“Pete had always been healthy, he never smoked, grew his own fruit and veg, ate very little sugar and enjoyed a healthy Evesham diet.” But diabetic medication did not help. Pete’s symptoms, which included chronic indigestion, middle back pain and bowel problems, grew worse. A subsequent ultra sound proved inconclusive. So did a CT scan and an endoscopy although, significantly, while he was in the hospital, a junior nurse remarked that his eyes and skin were quite yellow. Pete was referred to a gastroenterologist but, while waiting for the next appointment, he paid privately for another CT scan. This showed a shadow on the pancreas, but it was not thought to be significant. In December he saw the gastroenterologist, who carried out further tests. These revealed a small tumour on the pancreas, which was thought to be operable. On December 19, Pete was seen at the Queen Elizabeth and it was

agreed to carry out the Whipple the following month. “I was told the operation would take seven hours,” says Sandra. “While waiting with a friend, and after only four hours, I was called to the High Dependency Unit. I looked at my friend and said, ‘It hasn’t worked’.” Sandra was told the devastating news that while attempting the Whipple, the surgeon had discovered that the tumour was wrapped around a main artery. Pete was given chemotherapy but it made him feel even worse. “He was so ill and loathed the whole regime but stuck three rounds and then said ‘no more’,” says Sandra. The respite from chemo enabled Pete to remain well enough to enjoy a happy summer with his family. He drove his

Austin7, worked in his garden and enjoyed a sunny holiday in Minehead with his A7 friends. And all the while Pete helped prepare Sandra for everything she would need to know in order to keep the home running. “He was facing his death with great positivity,” reflects Sandra. “Sometimes he would even joke about it, which our friends would find rather disconcerting. “We knew that 20% of people who don’t have the Whipple operation die within 12 months. Pete lived 12 months and two days. He called himself a Twenty-percenter.” Sandra, in the meantime, found great support not only from Pancreatic Cancer Action but from the Facebook group Families in Support of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness.

By September it was apparent his ‘year’ was up. He began to deteriorate to the point where he became very quiet about dying. Pete wanted to die at home and Sandra put off arranging for him to go into the Macmillan unit at Evesham hospital, although fate had other ideas… The floods of November 2012 made the decision for them. Sandra and Pete were at their lovely riverside home, anxiously watching the water head towards them. “Although we had a strong flood defence wall, we couldn’t be sure it wouldn’t be breached and Pete needed to be safe. “As the situation became critical Pete’s support team arrived: his doctor, district nurse, the diabetic nurse, family and friends, all deeply concerned about his predicament.” An ambulance was called to take Pete to Evesham Community Hospital, travelling by a circuitous route to avoid the floods. For the last weeks of his life Sandra stayed in the Macmillan Unit, sleeping on the floor beside him.

Sandra with actress Julie Hesmondhalgh outside the Houses of Parliament. Julie’s Coronation Street character Hayley Cropper died from pancreatic cancer and she has become a patron of the campaign Hope Is Contagious.

All this time Pete’s family, including his five dear grandchildren, could visit at any time and, says Sandra, “the wonderful nurses in the unit told me I no longer needed to be his carer. “For three precious weeks I became his wife again.”

SIGNS AND SUPPORT Following Pete’s sad death, at the age of 70, Sandra became determined to do what she could to help others in similar situations. She now devotes much of her time raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer Action and awareness of spotting the disease in time. Over the past five years Sandra, together with the help of friends and family, has raised more than £25,000 for the charity. One of her first successes was to ask the Wiper family, owners of The Regal, if she could have the cinema to screen Patrick Swayze’s film Dirty Dancing. (The actor had died of the disease at the age of 57.) The cinema was filled to capacity and raised a terrific £2,737. Many more events followed and Sandra also helped to organise a petition, signed by 100,000 people, to ask the Government to arrange more funding for this ‘orphan disease’. She has sat in a debate in the Houses of Parliament and met many celebrities in her drive to raise funds and awareness. Last year Sandra’s daughter-in-law Laura ran the London Marathon and raised £5,600 for PCA. So what are the main symptoms of this dreaded disease? PCA’s quick guide advises people to look out for: Jaundice type symptoms, yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin and/or an itchy skin; unexplained weight loss; indigestion; abdominal pain or discomfort, not responding to medication; mid-back pain; pale stools. “Pancreatic Cancer Action supported me all the way through. Now I want to support them in their wonderful work of raising awareness of the symptoms so that people can be diagnosed early enough to have the Whipple operation,” explains Sandra. “Ali Sunt, of PCA, is a ten year survivor and is an amazing, inspirational lady. BIZ BUZZ TIME TO NURTURE GREEN SHOOTS? THE Rural Services Network (RSN) is calling for swift action from the Government to address challenges for those outside urban hotspots. Service providers and organisations, including Worcestershire County Council, are backing the plea for a comprehensive strategy to improve support for struggling communities and their businesses. “Rural communities are frequently overlooked in a policy environment dominated by urban thinking and policy concerns,” says RSN Chief Executive Graham Biggs. “If rural communities are to be sustainable, the Government must seize this opportunity to work with communities to produce a long-term, funded rural strategy that recognises the contribution rural areas make and have the potential to make to the wellbeing and prosperity of the nation as a whole.”

magazine

The organisation says the promise of rural areas is being squandered, despite projections that unlocking digital potential could add at least £12bn of extra productivity each year to the UK economy. Its report spotlights the issues, including a skills and brain-drain plus housing prices versus local wages. The challenge is even more urgent, says the RSN, in the face of the projected exit from the EU in 2020. “The sources of funding, which support rural businesses and community development from EU initiatives, will end. “A new Rural Strategy must provide rural businesses with the support they need to create thriving local economies.” The RSN (www.rsnonline.org.uk) has produced Template Rural Strategy to inform what’s urgently needed to make a difference. That includes support for rural businesses with improved broadband connectivity and ensuring opportunities for quality jobs, skills and training are available so young people can remain local.

business and professional The good news is that there is a onestop website to help. Mental Health at Work (www.mentalhealthatwork.org.uk) is a dedicated free portal to a whole host of resources. Launched by the Duke of Cambridge, whose The Royal Foundation supports it, and developed by charity Mind, it offers a wealth of information from key organisations across the UK for both bosses and workers. You can find advice, guides, tips, courses, blogs, podcasts... and if your company is already benefitting from your own bright ideas, Mind would love to share your experiences. “We know that employers want to do more and are starting to see mental health as a priority, but often don’t know where to start,” commented Paul Farmer, Chief Executive of Mind. “Even small changes to policy, approach and workplace culture can make a really big difference to the mental health of those around us. Mental Health at Work can help you find what you need to start or continue your journey to better workplace wellbeing for everyone.”

Why people are beating a path to OHMS ONE of the big aspects of the British way of life has always been the pride and attention we pay to our gardens, but how we do our nurturing has changed. One big leap forward is how much we now rely on powered equipment, such as mowers, strimmers, chain saws and similar tools. But the introduction of ever more sophisticated technology,, particularly in battery powered tools, has resulted in a confusing array of products of varying quality and utility. There are however leading brands that offer very real improvements that can lighten the workload and offer significant advantages. OHMS, of Pershore’s Bridge Street, is particularly proud to be able to offer the

leading brands in this field. Its stock of products includes the very latest battery powered tools that incorporates the latest technology for longer work life and reliability. OHMS is also an agent for classleading garden machinery manufacturers such as Husqvarna and Atco. Of particular note are the Husqvarna Robotic Mowers, which uses all the latest GPS and smartphone technology to provide a completely autonomous mowing machine even within the most complex garden layout. Atco has also not been resting on its wellearned laurels and has recently introduced a new twin cut blade design to their rotary mowers, which greatly enhances the cutting performance With over 20 years’ experience in the small horticultural machine business Peter and Hayley Moffat have both the knowledge

and skills to be able to offer sound practical advice to back their highly customer-focused service. Such has been their ever growing reputation that OHMS now supplies its services to small estates, commercial horticulture businesses and local clubs, such as bowling, cricket and football clubs. OHMS also offers a first class servicing facility for all types of garden machinery, with a very handy collection and delivery service. BARRIE BALDELLI

Looking good (yum yum) HAVE you ever thought about growing vegetables in the flower border or as a screen in front of a wall or hedge? Good think! There are vegetables with very attractive foliage and large flower heads, like cardoons and globe artichokes, which will enhance the look of your garden whilst providing you with fresh home-grown food. My favourite is the globe artichoke, a large perennial plant that will regrow each year. However, if you are growing to eat, it is best to replant about every three years. It needs a sunny site with a soil rich in organic matter that retains moisture but does not stay waterlogged in the winter. If there is some form of shelter for the young shoots in the spring, that’s even better. You’ll get the highest crop in a cool, moist summer when the plant grows plenty of

foliage. The edible bit is the globe, or flower head, which looks like a large thistle. You can plant from February to April, and putting in pot grown plants seems to be the best method of growing. Space them 90cm apart. If you position at the back of a flower border, the plant will shelter the front growing plants. Young plants (one year and younger) are very susceptible to frost, so do cover with fleece or grow young potted plants in a frame or greenhouse. Mature plants are drought resistant, but you get larger globes if you water as the flower buds are forming. Harvest when the globes are large, but have not started to open out, as these will be tough to eat. Cut globes can be kept in water for about a week before being used. Another one good for a border is the Jerusalem artichoke, whose foliage can grow up to 1.8m to 2.1m in a single year. Unlike the globe, Jerusalem artichokes are underground. The plant is hardy, making it a useful winter vegetable. The foliage is bright green and forms a good backing for brightly coloured flowers in front. Take care though, as they will spread and become invasive. On the other hand, they will grow in places where other plants struggle - under trees for example. They can stand dry conditions too.

Plant the tubers from February until May. When the young plants are about 30cm tall, pile up soil around the stems to make them more stable. Stake plants on a windy site. Harvest from October to March. You can leave the tubers in the ground over winter, to be dug up when needed. Florence Fennel is another plant that looks stunning in a mixed border. It has a rounded base, from where the leaves grow, and the foliage is very green and wispy and can be used to flavour fish, among other dishes. Fennel does not like to have its roots disturbed and thus growing in modules is best, or sow where it is to stay. The young plants must be grown in pots as they are very susceptible to frost. Plant out in late spring, 20cm apart at the back of a border, as the plants will grow tall. Water well in dry weather and harvest the bulbs when they are plump. Swiss Chard is an attractive addition, not least because it’s very easy to grow and will stand neglect. Grow chard in short rows or clumps dotted about in your border. Cut the young leaves when they are short and tender, or

Red Tom, unsurprisingly, is a tasty red skinned type. Others to look our for include Indigo Cherry Drops; Ananas (an unusual yellow beefsteak); Sungold )yellow cherry); Tropical Ruby (a F1 bush); Chocolate Cherry and Fenda (which has rose pink flesh).
