London perfume house Miller Harris finds inspiration in the city to create beautiful fragrances... Inspiration is all around us if we take the time to stop and look, believes Miller Harris, which uses this ethos in the development of its fragrances. "There is beauty in the most unexpected places," says CEO Sarah Rotheram. "We delight in the creative landscape of London, but use the finest natural ingredients to interpret the story." The brand pushes boundaries, taking on a theme or muse and interpreting it in an innovative way. For example, Tender is inspired by the novel Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald. "An extract of the book was given to [master perfumer] Bertrand Duchaufour, who picked up on the black tulips in the book, so this fragrance is an interpretation of this, with an unusual heart of black ink that adds drama and sensuality." Its innovative approach carries through to all elements of the brand including the
packaging, which is always considered, combining eco credentials with beauty. "We are working hard to remain a luxury brand but always be conscious of our commitment to the planet. "With our Forage collection, our perfume bases are made from recycled London plastic, they look like marble and are beautiful objects. Our aim to is make packaging you want to keep and reuse. Similarly, our Christmas range is wrapped in beautiful silk scarves with a pom-pom and is the gift that keeps on giving." We asked Sarah for her advice when it comes to buying perfume. "Think about when you want to wear the fragrance, how, and what would you like the fragrance to say about you. More and more we are wearing perfume like a wardrobe and gone are the days of

a signature fragrance, changing our perfume for the evening or as the seasons change. I wear bolder fragrances with eveningwear, or a softer floral in the day." She explains it as the difference between heels and trainers. She adds: "I would suggest that you experiment, and trust your reaction as fragrances are so personal. How does it make you feel? How is it on the skin? Niche fragrances like ours can take a while to evolve so always try it on the skin." And her tips for wearing fragrance? "Spray to the pulse points, don’t rub! Never rub. I prefer to spray or apply my fragrance before I get dressed, as it then works with the skin and creates a lovely veil. I will often spray a cloud and walk through so that it falls onto my hair and carry the scent as I put my hands through my hair."

WHITE CHRISTMAS We talk to Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder of The White Company, about how she celebrates the festive season…
How do you normally decorate your home for Christmas? And what tips do you have? We always have our tree in the hall and then I try to add a little touch of Christmas to each room. I love to decorate mantle pieces and large windowsills with lots of greenery, fairy lights and candles in glass storm lanterns. We always have family to stay and in each guest room I hang two or three Christmas decorations on cupboard door handles plus I add one of our small Christmas trees with fairy lights to make the bedroom feel special. What do you love most about the festive season? More than anything it’s simply about the anticipation of creating some special moments for family and friends. The year races by at such a pace, so whilst Christmas is inevitably busy, and sometimes a little stressful, it’s the thought of spending time together and celebrating both the year just gone and the new one ahead. What is your advice for Christmas and New Year entertaining? As much as I love Delia, Jamie and Nigella, it is all about balance and being realistic about what you have time to do. If you have time to cook absolutely everything from scratch that is fantastic. But if you don’t – cheat! It’s more
important to have a happy time together. I always cook the turkey (Nigella) and the vegetables (Jamie and Delia) from scratch, but I buy (or ask someone to bring) the Christmas pudding, brandy butter and mince pies and cake. I delegate lots and a good tip is always put someone in charge of topping up the drinks! How do you go about your Christmas shopping and choosing what to buy for people? I try to be organised from the beginning, so I start with a list – I always keep last year’s to remind me of what I last bought to ensure everyone gets a lovely surprise. Think about what’s happening in family and friends' lives – someone may have recently moved house or had a baby, teenagers who might be away at university or travelling. Finding something thoughtful that will really be appreciated and enjoyed is the most important thing. Also aim to finish presents and wrapping before December! A good friend of mine said to me about five years ago that she did all of her Christmas shopping and wrapping by the end of November. I remember thinking, ‘wow that is just too organised!’ But the next year, I tried it and I have never looked back. Also I always keep an emergency present drawer for just in case/ last-minute surprises. In this I keep: a selection of candles, selection of bath oils, cashmere socks (both for men and women), and some fun smaller items like our pom-pom keyring, which teenagers always love. For men, a few pieces of our Aspen range

are perfect impromptu gifts. This year we introduced our Orange Rind fragrance as a cracker gift set – three deluxe miniatures in a Christmas cracker-shaped gift box makes a perfect stocking-filler. Which of your products are you most excited about this year? Last year our advent calendar (£150) was so popular; it sold out in just three days! This year, we’ve made it even better with 24 really special little luxuries, including skincare, bath treats, scented candles and a few surprises. We have also launched a new Sleep Collection, a range of naturally-infused sleep remedies designed to offer the perfect wind-down routine. Our super-cosy Harrington bed linen (from £10) is a great gift choice as the nights get colder, with its soft and almost warm-to-the-touch feeling. Our silk pyjamas (£169) are always a super luxurious gift and, to make it even more special, they have a matching eye mask (£25). How will you spend Christmas? It has become an annual tradition to spend 24 hours in London, time permitting, with my children and Godchildren. We try and fit in a trip to the theatre or ice skating and a lovely, good old-fashioned tea at somewhere like Fortnum & Mason. Christmas Day is always busy but great fun. We start with stockings early, followed by mucking out the horses, a trip to church, far too much eating and drinking and then we all hunker down in front of the TV.
