NEWS

Hauliers face ‘dramatic change after Brexit’ Brexit is likely to see a dramatic reduction in foreign hauliers’ work in the UK, according to the Road Haulage Association. Director of Policy Jack Semple told delegates at a Westminster Energy Environment and Transport Forum it was probable that trucks from abroad would no longer be allowed to do UK domestic transport work. “This has potentially serious implications for some large British shippers,” he said. “We have seen a sharp rise in UK domestic work done by vehicles from other EU member states, which has driven a near-50% increase in foreign HGVs’ share of total UK truck mileage in just two years. “This increase is because they have lower operating costs – partly because they buy fuel abroad with lower duty levels, but also because they are less compliant with regulations from roadworthiness and drivers’ hours, to flouting National Living Wage regulations. “International transport licensing is likely to continue unchanged,

within a new land transport agreement. “So we will still see many foreign vehicles on our roads, providing their vital service to the economy. But for domestic work, they are likely to be replaced by UK registered lorries.” He continued: “There is precedence for such an arrangement – that is the agreement between the EU and Switzerland. We do not anticipate that a continuation of cabotage and combined transport is likely to be acceptable to the EU. “It is a probable change, therefore. shippers – and hauliers – need to be aware of as they plan for Brexit.”

DAF Driver Trainer impresses DAF dealer Channel Commercials’ Driver Trainer, Duncan Lancaster came in for some praise recently after impressing Trevor Smith, Transport & Despatch Manager at Glassolutions in Canterbury. The commercial glass specialist, part of the huge Saint Gobain construction group, is currently taking delivery of some 18-tonne DAF CF rigids. Following some bedding-in issues with one of the vehicle’s safety systems, Duncan, on his own initiative, contacted the customer to arrange a visit. “Duncan was just fantastic,” said Trevor Smith, “his attitude was first class; he was understanding, professional and exceptionally knowledgeable about the product. Our driver, Chris, learned quickly and we were soon on top of the issue. I was very pleased with the service from Duncan and Channel Commercials. We’ve worked with Channel for many years,” said Trevor, “but this is the first time we’ve had on-site product training and it’s a brilliant service. We have four more drivers scheduled for training with Duncan, and I know they will benefit massively from the experience.” 4

“We have seen a sharp rise in UK domestic work done by vehicles from other EU member states, which has driven a 50% increase in two years”

Shock lack of knowledge revealed over UK motorway refuge areas Safety concerns over hard shoulder running on so-called ‘smart motorways’ remain as a new poll shows that just one in three think it’s a good idea. It comes in the wake of new research which revealed that half of motorists are not familiar with emergency refuge areas (ERAs). The study, conducted by the RAC, with more than 2,000 motorists, found that in excess of half (52%) of those surveyed did not know what an ERA was. Furthermore, there was also confusion about how to use an ERA, with two-thirds neither knowing what to do after stopping (64%) nor how to re-join the motorway (65%). And, even of the 1.5% who had actually used an emergency refuge area, only one respondent knew they should contact Highways England to facilitate getting back on to the motorway if the hard shoulder was operating as a running lane for traffic. Everyone else thought they should just wait for a gap in the traffic and then accelerate as quickly as possible to motorway speed. There was, however, good awareness of when it is appropriate to stop in an emergency refuge area. Almost every motorist (98%) said they should be used in a breakdown and 90% stated they should be used after an accident, but 40% also thought it was appropriate to use an emergency refuge area for medical reasons, such as needing to take medication. Worryingly,

27% thought they could be used for either the driver or a passenger to be sick. Lesley Slater, Operations and Business Development Director at LeasePlan UK, said: “It is important for drivers to take responsibility for their own safety by staying up to date with any new laws introduced.” However, she added: “Confusion around what is and what is not legal on the motorway is compounded by the fact that drivers are not allowed to drive on the motorway until passing their practical driving test. This is right from a driver safety perspective but as it isn’t mandatory to have an additional motorway driving lesson, this can lead to gaps in knowledge, confidence and experience.” Highways England ran a radio advertising campaign reminding people of the correct use of ERAs and is currently conducting a review, the findings of which are expected to be published soon. The RAC has been working closely with Highways England and is backing work to improve the motoring public’s understanding of ERAs and how to use them. RAC Chief Engineer David Bizley said: “It is essential motorists understand how and when to use an emergency refuge area so they do not put their own safety and that of other road users at risk.”

DW Commercials fuels DAF presence in Tamworth D

AF Trucks has confirmed the appointment of the latest addition to its DAF dealer network – DW Commercials in Dosthill near Tamworth. The family-run DAF service and parts location has full ADR and Pet. Reg. capability, and is strategically located close to one of the UK’s principal oil terminals at Kingsbury, thus providing DAF operators of hazardous goods with a onestop-shop aftersales facility. DW Commercials becomes the 17th DAF dealer across the UK and Ireland to provide dedicated services for Pet. Reg. / ADR operators. While the appointment satisfies demand from hazardous goods operators in Staffordhsire, further DAF dealer points are strategically located at other primary oil refineries and distribution hubs at Warwick, Spalding, Manchester and Deeside.

Increasing demand The steady spread of DAF Trucks’ ADR / Pet. Reg. network follows increasing demand from major customers in the hazardous goods sector, including Tesco and Turners (Soham).

With a growing reputation and an expanding customer base, DW Commercials commenced operations as a DAF dealer on June 1st. The company had been a successful independent workshop in its own right since 2009, moving to their current site in 2012, and benefitting from support from local DAF dealer, Greenhous DAF in Willenhall. Before that, husband and wife team, Daryl and Kate Winyard, started a mobile commercial vehicle

service in 2006. Today, DW Commercials employs ten staff and boasts a five-bay workshop.

Upgrade programme Following a 24-month upgrade programme, additional facilities include a new office, full-length commercial vehicle bays, and attendant ADR / Pet. Reg. equipment, thus bringing the location up to full DAF network standards. Dealer Principal Daryl Winyard said: “We’re a family-run business with a deep understanding of the local truck operating community. Now, with the backing of the market-leading DAF brand behind us, and with Pet. Reg. and ADR expertise on-site, we can provide the very highest levels of aftersales support to hazardous goods operators. “Although we have our own customer base, we have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Greenhous DAF,” he said, “which has helped us develop our reputation within the local DAF operating community.”

CV SHOW NEWS

Past, present and W

hile the global launch of the new CF and XF series stole the headlines at the CV Show (see page 8 for a full report on the new models), there was plenty more besides to interest operators on the DAF Trucks stand at the NEC. The Future, now With an eye very much on the future, DAF Trucks presented its Future Truck Chassis Concept (FTCC). FTCC benefits from a number of patented chassis design innovations and, in combination with lightweight materials and components, the truck achieves a remarkable weight saving of 500kg on DAF’s 12-tonne LF chassis platform – which already offers a low kerb weight for highest payload. Featuring independent front air suspension, the FTCC also makes extensive use of aluminium and boasts an integrated body floor structure, achieved by incorporating the body sub-frame into the main chassis side members. DAF First Choice DAF Trucks continues to experience growing demand for its First Choice quality-approved used trucks, and in particular its Euro-6 XF 6x2 tractor unit models. First Choice is DAF Trucks’ premium, quality-approved used truck programme. DAF Trucks and PACCAR Financial – DAF Trucks’ financial services division – displayed late model, low mileage 460bhp and 510bhp examples of these in-demand models at the CV Show. Both First Choice show exhibits were snapped up by two different CV Show visitors – reportedly Scania operators – on the first day. TRP – Parts for everyone, and everything DAF Trucks’ all-makes parts brand, TRP, took prominent position at the CV Show too, as its TRP-branded trailer sat proudly on the highlysought-after roundabout position at the entrance to the NEC. The truck and trailer combination, with the ‘Building Britain’ liveried DAF XF, greeted CV Show visitors, as TRP promoted its range of trailer, all makes parts and workshop consumables. The ramp-up in visibility coincided with the UK and European roll-out of new, dedicated TRP Shops, introduced to complement Parts availability through the existing DAF dealer network. There are now 11 TRP shops strategically located throughout the UK and Ireland, the most recent in Irthlingborough, near Kettering. Plans are at an advanced stage to open a further five TRP shops this year. TRP Catalogue – ninth edition lands at CV Show The ninth edition of the definitive TRP catalogue was published late last year and was available on the DAF Trucks stand at the CV Show. “Be aware,” warned Stewart Davies, “with over 75,000 parts in TRP’s ever-expanding range, the printed TRP catalogue is a hefty tome! DAF’s FAQ rigid delivers the answers

T

he UK’s largest purchaser and recycler of waste glass, URM (UK), has added seven new specialist DAF multi-wheel rigids to its South Kirkby-based fleet. Key among them is DAF’s CF 440 FAQ chassis – an 8x2 ‘tridem’ configuration with lift-and-steer capability on the second and fourth axles. The FAQ set-up provides outstanding manoeuvrability for URM’s glass collection operation which, the company says, offers ‘a marked improvement over a standard rear-steer arrangement’. A double-skinned, half-tailgate bulk tipper body from Weightlifter and HMF crane complete the specification. DAF’s tridem arrangement provides significant payload benefits over its smaller 26-tonne CF 6x4 ‘FAT’ stablemate, yet providing all the benefits of manoeuvrability when accessing tight locations. Further trucks making up the latest delivery into URM’s 100% DAF fleet, include four CF 440 FA skip-loader / draw-bar units, a CF 400 FAX eight-wheel rear-steer bulk tipper and a CF 370 FAN 6x2 rear-steer tipper and crane. All the latest trucks were spec’d to exacting standards and fulfil specific operational requirements. Fleet Engineer, Dave Bellamy, has remained a staunch supporter of the DAF brand for 17-years, saying: “The basic DAF product is a solid, hugely reliable chassis built to the highest quality. But,” he said, “it’s the close support we get from the local DAF Dealers, F&G Commercials and Imperial Commercials, which means we get exactly the right truck 8

“DAF’s multi-wheeler chassis offer no-nonsense platforms for a wide range of body types” for our requirements. They know what we want and it’s a real partnership. “DAF’s multi-wheeler chassis offer no-nonsense platforms for a wide

range of body types,” he added. “Our latest DAF tridem is ideal for collections from pubs, clubs and supermarkets in the area, and is proving even more manoeuvrable than the existing rear-steer DAF eight-wheeler on the fleet.” URM (UK), formerly Berryman, has a 90-year history in the glass recycling business. Today, it recycles half a million tonnes of glass annually, rising to 800,000 tonnes with the opening of its new recycling centre in Tilbury. Its 36-strong all-DAF fleet comprises 44-tonne artics, skip-loader draw-bars and roll-on-off units – all designed and spec’d for specific collection and delivery operations.

truckfest

TRUCKIN’ MARVELLOU With good weather over the May bank holiday weekend, Truckfest at Peterborough was the place to be. DAF took the opportunity to show off its new range to the thronging masses. The dedicated team of DAF Driver Magazine judges hit the show to find the best DAFs and Leylands on the show ground and stiff competition made the task tough, but they managed to choose what, in their opinion, was the ‘best of the fest’

Best Show Truck – I&T Transport, Aberchirder Sponsored by DAF Trucks XF 510 FTG Super Space Cab A fine example of DAF’s top-of-the-range six-wheel tractor unit. Judges from DAF Driver Magazine agreed the claret paintwork and chrome accents were a perfect match, set-off brilliantly by the tasteful Mission Impossible livery – with understated yet perfectly executed airbrush work courtesy of local artist Bob Falconer from Arbroath. The truck is owned by husband and wife team, Ian and Tracy Duncan, and was supplied by local DAF dealer, Norscot Truck & Van.

First operated in 1983, current owners, Longthorne of Hebden, acquired the truck only recently before painstakingly returning the truck to its former glory – with many of the parts acquired from India! s

An early Christmas present from his son was just what Jonathan Longthorne was looking for – a DAF 2100 to renovate to its former glory. Kevin Swallow gets a closer look at the winner of DAF Driver Magazine’s Best Classic trophy...

The 1982-built truck had been in a shed for 15 years and was in decent condition. The 8.25-litre turbo-intercooled diesel engine produces 210hp and 502Nm of torque. It is fitted with a six-speed ZF manual transmission with a splitter function. The drive axle ratio is 6.33:1

There is more work to do and this winter Jonathan plans to strip down and rebuild the engine with some new parts. He said: “Now is the time to do it while you can still get what you need. I don’t want to buy another engine and transfer parts, as you’ll be buying someone else’s problems.”

F

ounded in 1928, North Yorkshire’s Longthorne of Hebden built its reputation hauling livestock and aggregates. Since 2000, brothers Mark, Gordon and Jonathan Longthorne have run the business, taking over from their father Ken. Herbert Longthorne, Ken’s father and the three brothers’ grandad, started the business with a onetonne Chevrolet wagon, carting coal and cattle to markets. The Chevrolet was joined in the 1930s by a Bedford and in the 1960s, Leylands were introduced. The 1970s saw the introduction of tipper wagons from DAF and Volvo. Today, the company runs more than 30 wagons and still has two wagons on livestock, with one driven by Jonathan’s son Luke. His other son Matthew works in the office. In November 2016, Luke Longthorne bought a DAF 2100 tractor unit for his father as an early Christmas present. Jonathan’s earliest memories of the DAF 2100 stretch back to his childhood in the 1970s when his father bought DAFs from Northern Commercials in Mirfield, run by William (Bill) Shepley. It was a DAF dealer back then. “I used to ride in them and help mend them, then when I left school in 1986 Bill Shepley took me on at Northern Commercials as an apprentice mechanic. It was a five-year course and it was a fantastic experience. But after a year my dad wanted me back at the company and he put me through a young driver’s course and they gave me a 2100 four-wheeler with an insulated tipper body to drive. It was the first wagon I drove and I wanted to get another one,” recalled Jonathan. ● 14 Summer 2017 // DAF Driver

Wherever it’s been, the DAF 2100 has turned heads. Jonathan said: “There aren’t many around. It was a proper fleet truck really so no-one kept them but it’s generated a lot of interest.”

Once the engine is sorted, Jonathan will set about painting the chassis red to finish the project.

The New DAF CF and

D

AF is introducing the new generation CF and XF trucks, which set a new standard in transport efficiency and driver comfort. Engine innovations, new drivelines and aerodynamic optimisations result in an up to 7% lower fuel consumption. The new DAF Connect fleet management system will drive even larger efficiency gains. The new generation CF and XF also feature lower weight for increased payload and an updated interior and exterior design for the highest driver comfort and greatest appeal.

Improved fuel efficiency, along with more power and torque at lower revs Class-leading fuel efficiency is the result of the fully-integrated and innovative driveline that achieves optimum interaction between engine, after-treatment system, transmission and rear axles, for lowest total cost of ownership. The air management of the PACCAR MX engines has been further improved by applying a new and even more efficient turbocharger, a new EGR system and a new valve actuation design. Thermal efficiency has been enhanced by developing a new combustion system, including new pistons, injectors and injection strategies, while higher compression ratios are employed. New highly efficient variable speed cooling, steering and oil pumps are used to achieve the lowest fuel consumption. A key principle when developing the new drivelines was to reduce engine revs for best-in-class fuel efficiency. Maximum torque of the PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 engines has been increased significantly and is already available from 900 rpm to allow down speeding of the engine. The top-of-the range PACCAR MX-13 engine produces 390 kW/530 hp and 2,600 Nm of torque at 1,000 rpm.

Highly-efficient rear axle designs Rear axle designs have been further developed and reductions of down to 2.05:1 can be specified for driving at cruising speeds of 85 km/h at only 1,000 – 1,040 rpm, depending on driveline choice. The new generation of rear axle differentials features a completely new design of crown wheel and pinion, aimed at highest durability and

what’s new... l 7% lower fuel consumption l PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 engine innovations l New efficient TraXon automated gearbox l New high efficiency rear axles with faster ratios l Advanced powertrain software features l Aerodynamic optimisations l New PACCAR Engine Brake efficiency as well as extremely low noise levels. Application of low viscosity oils, lower oil levels in the rear axles and low friction wheel end bearings also enhance fuel efficiency.

Efficient TraXon gearbox as standard The latest generation of TraXon automated gearboxes are standard on the New CF and XF series with the 12-speed being standard and a 16-speed optional. Less friction losses, even faster upshifts and the extended use of EcoRoll contribute to lowest fuel consumption. Driver comfort is enhanced thanks to its quiet and smooth operation and precise clutch control. The increased ratio spread allows excellent manoeuvrability, even when faster drivelines are applied.

Advanced powertrain software features The New CF and XF feature a completely new electric and electronic architecture. It introduces a new vehicle control unit for dedicated driveline integration, featuring enhanced EcoRoll and Cruise Control functionalities, such as Dynamic Cruise. Dynamic Cruise adapts the character of the cruise control to the different driving circumstances. Thanks to a further integration of Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) and EcoRoll, PCC can now activate EcoRoll sooner, when both technologies have calculated that vehicle momentum is sufficient to carry the vehicle in neutral gear over the top of the hill within a set speed bandwidth.

Industry-leading PACCAR Engine Brake performance Alongside enhanced output, the performance of the PACCAR Engine Brake has been improved. Maximum braking power of the PACCAR MX-11

l Up to 100 kilogram higher payload l New compact Exhaust After-treatment System l Maximum uptime l Service-intervals up to 200,000 km l First class body builder-friendliness l DAF Connect fleet management system for the highest transport efficiency engine has grown from 320 to 340 kW. Braking power has increased 20% between 1,000 to 1,500 rpm. Maximum braking power of the MX-13 is no less than 360 kW and in the important 1,200 to 1,500 rpm range, braking power has increased up to 30%.

Aerodynamic Optimisations In order to achieve lowest possible fuel

d XF - pure excellence consumption, vehicle aerodynamics have been improved thanks to a new sun visor design for the CF and XF. In addition, the New XF features wheel bay extensions and flow guides behind the grille for optimal aerodynamics around the truck and through to the engine bay. New grille closures reduce drag, and new gap closures between the headlight and corner deflector realise the best possible aerodynamics.

Up to 100 kilogrammes higher payload For the new CF and XF, DAF has developed a completely new and compact Exhaust Aftertreatment System (EAS), which results in more chassis space for components such as larger fuel tank, compressors, tool boxes or crane legs. An advanced substrate technology allows for a 40% reduction in overall volume in the EAS unit. This is done without compromising backpressure, ash cleaning intervals or DeNOx efficiency. In fact, the compact box heats up faster allowing the engine

to operate quicker and even more frequently in its most efficient fuel map. The compactness of the EAS units also means that for special applications, DeNOx catalytic converter and Diesel Particulate Filter don’t need to be split anymore, which contributes to excellent overall efficiency. Another advantage of the new ultra-compact EAS unit is that it is some 50 kilogrammes lighter. Thanks to additional measures like engine and chassis weight optimisation, the New CF and XF offer 100 kilogrammes more payload.

Maximum uptime Service intervals of the New DAF CF and XF can be extended from 150,000 to 200,000 kilometres. Despite the compact dimensions of the new EAS unit, its capabilities are unmatched, resulting in ash cleaning intervals of up to 500,000 kilometres, which contributes to maximum customer uptime. The enhanced Body Attachment Method supports the shortest configuration time, as the new design

at the rear end of the chassis allows easy fitment of, for instance, tail lifts and dedicated prepared installation plates for boxed bodies and cranes.

DAF Connect fleet management system DAF Connect is an innovative fleet management system, offering the operator real-time information on the performance of his vehicles and drivers. Information on vehicle location, fuel consumption, mileage, fleet utilisation and idle time are clearly presented in an on-line dashboard, which can be tailored to customer requirements. The userfriendly dashboard can be configured to provide comprehensive fuel reports with current and historical data that compares the fleet’s vehicles and drivers. The Live Fleet View feature provides all the information needed about the location of the fleet in order to enable optimal planning including distances, routes and driving time for the vehicle and driver. Operators receive self-defined alerts when deviations occur in areas like speed, route, location and fuel consumption so they can immediately improve fleet performance.

new launches

The New CF and XF: drivers’ dream

T

he New CF and XF remain the industry leader in driver comfort, thanks to their great accessibility, excellent interior space and many innovations that enhance comfort, userfriendliness, attractiveness and safety. l New interior trim l New Temperature and Climate Control (HVAC) l New Exclusive Line l Upgraded instrument panel and dashboard lay-out l Plug and play driver preference switches. From the moment you step inside, the new DAF CF and XF deliver the highest level of quality and driver comfort. New warm and tasteful colors on the dashboard, seats, curtains, mattresses, side and back walls give the interior a beautiful appearance in which every driver can appreciate the luxury and richness. The XF piano black decoration on dashboard and rear wall gives the interior extra appeal. The XF Super Space Cab remains the most spacious cab on the market, with a total volume of more than 12.6 cu metres.

New temperature and climate control The new DAF CF and XF feature a new automatic HVAC system which is easy to operate. The system also contributes to the best fuel efficiency as the new smart controlled air-conditioning system consumes less energy by cooling the air down only as much as is needed to reach the desired temperature. Intelligent control of the evaporator is also used to avoid unnecessary air cooling. The new fully-automated HVAC system uses residual heat from the engine for heating the cab during shorts breaks, which adds to fuel efficiency. The new temperature and climate control systems can also be operated using the new rear wall panel with temperature display for highest driver comfort.

New Exclusive Line The summit of luxury and comfort is the New Exclusive Line, available for both the new CF and XF. The top-of-the range Exclusive Line is distinguished by the cognac colored dashboard,

door panels (XF) and leather seats, as well as the stylish bright vents (CF). A leather steering wheel is standard on the luxurious CF and XF versions.

Enhanced Driver Information The instrument panel has been redesigned with new characters for a more modern and attractive appearance and enhanced clarity. The enhanced Driver Information Panel includes a tachograph countdown, displaying remaining driving and resting times. This contributes to enhanced comfort and efficiency, as do the driver configurable switches (MUX), which allow the driver to position dashboard switches according to his/her preference. MUX-switches also allow optimal positioning of controls and switches for the operation of the superstructure or components like aggregates and crane leg supports. Drivers will also benefit from the new interior light switch, positioned in the central part of the dashboard, while DAF’s great sliding table and unmatched storage space remain untouched. The new interior light switch stands out in user-

friendliness with possibilities of dimming for ‘night drive’ and ‘relax’ modes. All speed-related functions, including cruise control, predictive cruise control and adaptive cruise control, are perfectly and logically grouped at the right side of the steering wheel.

Great looks DAF has enriched the exterior styling with subtle and stylish elements, like the identity plate in the doorstep which welcomes the driver to the luxurious interior (XF). A new DAF nameplate with a redesigned DAF logo featuring chrome letters symbolise the trucks’ quality. Accents in the bumper and sun visor give the exterior an extra touch of richness, as do the decorative strips in the grille and the new grille mesh for the XF.

Start of production The New CF and XF enter production this summer in 4x2 tractor (FT) and rigid (FA) configurations, the 6x2 tractor FTG and FTP with pusher axles, and the 6x2 rigid with single mounted trailing axle (FAR). Other versions will follow in autumn.

Optimum aerodynamics and attractive design go hand in hand The more aerodynamic the truck, the more fuel efficient it becomes. That is why DAF Trucks has made even more improvements to lower the aerodynamic drag of the CF and XF. At the same time, the design has been freshened up, including subtle chrome accents and a modified DAF name plate. The result proves that optimum aerodynamics to maximise fuel efficiency is the perfect partner for an attractive design. One of the style elements on the new DAF trucks is the new sun visor. The new shape is not the only change; the sun visor now sits much closer against the windscreen. Quite apart from the fact that the new visor enhances the appearance of the cab, it also helps to optimise the air flow and thus the aerodynamics. DAF has made further alterations to optimise the aerodynamics and, in turn, to further improve the fuel economy. That is why the gaps above

20 Summer 2017 // DAF Driver

the headlight panels in the XF are now sealed and the same goes for the upper part of the grille (with the exception of 390 kW/530 hp). Optimised airflow through the grille to the cooling system is guided and controlled by new air deflectors. Even the new wheel arch extensions on the XF, which close the gap between the tyre and the cab, help optimise the aerodynamics.

Easily adjustable roof spoiler The existing, easily adjustable roof spoiler from the DAF XF Space Cab remains as it is.

Thanks to a clever mechanism that is easy to operate, the height of the spoiler can be adjusted in no time to suit the height of the trailer. This guarantees that all combinations are streamlined to optimum effect.

Greater efficiency and more torque at lower speeds

U

p to seven percent more efficient and with noticeably more torque at lower engine speeds, DAF Trucks proudly presents the next generation DAF CF and DAF XF, with fundamental updates to drivelines developed for low engine speeds. The newly-developed PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 engines are coupled as standard with the latest generation of TraXon automated transmissions and new, highly-efficient rear axles. The result is a new benchmark in terms of fuel economy and driving comfort. To ensure that every drop of fuel is used to maximum effect, DAF has taken a close look at every aspect of the drivelines, asking “how can we lower fuel consumption even further?” for each part of the engine, the gearbox and the rear axle.

generation MX-11 and MX-13 deliver their maximum torque from 900 rpm, without compromising on performance. As a result, the engines in the new DAF CF and DAF XF operate at around 1,000 rpm at cruising speed.

Downspeeding

Multi Torque

The most important starting point in the development of the new PACCAR MX-11 and MX13 engines was to reduce speeds (downspeeding) for the lowest possible fuel consumption. The new

To ensure plenty of tractive effort and a high level of driving comfort, even at the new, lower speeds, the torque on all new engines has been increased by between 50 Nm and 200 Nm, depending on

the engine rating. DAF also uses ‘Multi Torque’ in the new generation DAF CF and DAF XF, which maximises the efficiency of the driveline in the highest gear. Thanks to Multi Torque, an extra 100 Nm to 150 Nm is available in the highest gear, meaning the truck can continue to drive in this gear for as much as possible. This minimises fuel consumption and maximises flexibility. The rating of almost every drive line has also been increased by 7 kW/10 hp to 14 kW/20 hp.

Increased rating and torque The new PACCAR MX-11 engine comes with ratings of 220 kW/299 hp, 251 kW/341 hp, 270 kW/367 hp, 300 kW/408 hp and 330 kW/449 hp. The engine torque is 1,350 Nm and 1,500 Nm for the two lightest drive lines, which are designed for distribution. The most powerful engine variant produces a torque of 2,300 Nm. The ratings for the redesigned PACCAR MX-13 are 315 kW/428 hp, 355kW/483 hp and 390 kW/530 hp. The peak torque is 2,300 Nm, 2,500 Nm and 2,600 Nm respectively.

Behind the wheel... We took a test drive of four different tractor units: a XF 450, a CF 450, XF 480 and XF 530. It’s quite unusual to find an MX11 powered XF in the UK these days, with our operators preferring to go for the bigger engine. The 11-litre XF we drove wasn’t as heavily freighted as the CF, which had a container trailer. At middle-weight work, the 450 will do well – it’s much loved by the big fleets and we can report that DAF really has done an impressive job with increasing the low-down torque output. The engine is capable of lugging down at 1,000rpm and maintaining speed on gradients. The new gearbox is incredibly long-legged compared to the old one, and it might take a

while for drivers to get used to it. In normal Eco-mode it will tend to want to avoid to change down gear, but hit the button on the stalk and the box will move into Eco-performance mode, which is a lot more lively and just the job for accelerating up motorway slip roads and so on. We feel the need to mention the CF interior; the Exclusive Line trim is excellent and although the CF is primarily a fleet truck, the trim in this one was as good as anything we’ve seen. It’s good that there’s a variety of trim options; traditional walnut is still available, as is the more modern silver. Any DAF driver will be instantly at home in either the XF or CF – and even if you’ve never sat in a DAF before you’ll soon be comfortable. The new 480bhp 13-litre is likely to be the biggest seller in the tractor unit market. And with full-torque available across the rev-range now in Eco-mode, we suspect it may actually outperform the previous 510 version!

The reworked engine brake is fantastic; it’s really powerful and on the top setting it’ll pull you to a halt without touching the brakes. It’s going to be really interesting to see what sort of fuel returns these engines give. However with the low-rev characterisitics of the engine/ gearbox combo, drivers are ideally going to need training to get the best from them. Last up was the 530bhp XF, which had a touch more grunty noise about it than the 480. Again, the gearbox will seek to change up a gear at 1,200rpm, but with all the torque available down there, and those reworked gear ratios to suit, it works. It’s going to take a bit of getting used to though. Overall, these latest revisions are a huge leap forward – almost as big as the move from Euro 5 to Euro 6. More power, more torque, a better gearbox, improved interior and better fuel economy. We’re looking forward to taking a proper test drive in a UK truck soon.

I

n 1999 Ken Little, boss of the Cumbrian haulier that bears his name, waved goodbye to his last artic. He’d built the company up from its beginning in 1967 running a Ford Trader to a MAN tractor unit with a Weightlifter tipper trailer, which worked in tandem with a four-wheeler rigid driven by his son Mark. “At that time diesel prices began to soar,” remembers Ken. According to the AA (Automobile Association) website diesel went up from 54p-alitre in 1995 to 72p-a-litre in 1999, a 34% increase. “We ran the artic from 03.30 in the morning to 01.30 the following morning on two shifts. I would drive it first then Mark,” he explains. “We’d be constantly collecting and delivering. In that last year the profit from the artic was just £500, which was the same as the four-wheeler. It hardly seemed worth it.” It proved to be a watershed moment and the artic, the main money earner since 1976, was gone. Living in Clifton, just south of Penrith on the A6, Ken had started in transport aged 25. A time-served mechanic at Ford car and truck dealer County Garage, now part of Arnold Clark, Ken and his wife Hope saw a business opportunity helping build the M6 that was linking Preston to Carlisle during the late 1960s. “McAlpine had started building the M6 and did the section from Shap to Calthwaite. I saw pound signs. I bought a three-year-old Ford Trader with a steel tipper body from County Garage for £450. It was plated at 14 tons gross vehicle weight and could carry 10 tons payload. “I got a C licence from McAlpine, then I got my B licence. The majority of the motorway was built on coarse sand from a disused quarry at Cliburn, another quarry near Bowscar did the northern section,” he recalls. Ken delivered the sand, then the aggregates that acted as the sub-base and finally the asphalt, as well as taking away the mounting debris. In 1970 the M6 from Shap to Carlisle opened, and at the same time Ken replaced the Trader with a new Ford D-series 1000 with a 16t GVW. He says: “Looking back, what we worked for was peanuts but we had more left in our pocket then than we do today.” As the M6 work fell away, Ken built his own client base before signing up with Barnett & Graham Limited, a Cumbrian transport company that ran from 1966 to 2006. “They’d a lot of the work tied up around here and had 30-to-40 subbies, so I joined them. I worked out of the lime quarry at Shap Fell, which was British Steel in those days. Today it’s Tata.” In 1974 he bought a second hand Volvo F86 sixwheeler with rear lift axle at 24 tons and trekked up to Motherwell, then in 1976 he bought his first tractor unit – a new MAN 16.232 with a flat dash and column change for £18,000. “Things were good in those days. I bought a second-hand Millmore twin-axle tipper trailer. I started to do longer journeys across the UK to Consett, Middlesbrough, Scunthorpe, Port Talbot and backloads out of Liverpool with cattle feed for the local mills,” Ken recalls. A subsidiary of Barnett & Graham was MAN dealer Borderman Trucks. “I bought another five MANs, replacing each one every two-tothree years and I replaced the trailers ever four years. I had a Fruehauf but ended up buying four weightlifter trailers,” Ken says. While Ken was driving the artic, his son Mark 26 Summer 2017 // DAF Driver

“We have always gone by running a service up to a standard and not down to a price. If you want a load at 10am, we’ll deliver it at 10am – we mean what we say” had gone through the RTITB (Regulatory Body for Workplace Transport Training) Young Drivers Scheme after leaving school in 1987. Two years later he got his class three licence and Ken bought a used 16t Leyland Freighter tipper for local work. Mark says: “At 20 I got my class one and then they changed the rules so I actually got it under grandfather’s rights.” By 1993, Mark was driving the artic but despite double-shifting, its profits plummeted and Ken got shot of it. “By 1999 diesel represented 50% of our earnings,” Ken explains, “but it wasn’t the lack of work, it was the rates. We bunkered fuel so it was cheaper to buy than at the pump but it was still expensive.” Ken briefly retired, spending five weeks decorating the house before returning to the road. Mark says: “By then I was driving an Iveco Eurocargo 18.230 tipper body with Harsh tipping gear, which started a strong relationship that remains today. We bought another Ford cargo

four-wheeler to do more work out of local sand quarries to build up our own work.” The penchant for replacing vehicles would eventually lead to buying their first DAF in 2003, a CF310 six-wheeler through Solway DAF, when a deal for a second Foden fell through. In 2008 a driver left so Ken, Hope and Mark decided to scale back from running three trucks to two. “We kept the 2005-DAF, and just bought a 58-plate DAF to replace the 03-plate CF310 and sold a Volvo we’d bought in 2005. As the money from the truck we sold landed in the bank, the following week news broke that we were heading towards a recession,” Mark explains. “Sometimes you need a bit of luck and we got ours that week.” Mark feels they got through the recession relatively unscathed with just two trucks, and says a third wagon to find work would have been more difficult. “Our work of buying and

Ken and Mark enjoy a strong relationship with Solway DAF in Penrith. Mark says: “They are very good to us and always fit us in, even at the eleventh hour.” delivering aggregates to our customers dried up as the quarry started to reduce delivery rates so undercutting us,” Mark says. Ken was pleased that some customers showed loyalty. He adds: “We have always gone by running a service up to a standard and not down to a price. If you want a load at 10am, we’ll deliver it at 10am – we mean what we say.” In 2011 work picked up again and they bought a new wagon in 2012, a CF75.360 and in 2014

bought a DAF CF eight-wheeler, and employing Brian Elliott to drive it. “Rather than go run of the mill with the livery, Mark’s daughter Ellen specified taking the animated film Frozen as her theme. “The wrap has cost £2,000 but it gets a lot of attention when it goes by,” says Mark. Ken agrees, adding: “If I had a pound for every time someone took a picture of it I’d never work again.” At this time Ken suffered a stroke. While he has

recovered, it has affected his eyesight and he has not driven since. With the 50th anniversary coming up, Mark wanted to do something special for his parents and ordered a new DAF CF440, which exhibited at Tip-Ex 2017. “It was a bit of a surprise for them,” says Mark. “It is well-specified with a candy-gold grille and Aliweld body. It’s a sleeper and has a manual eight-speed transmission and Harsh tipping gear. It cost £100,000 but has been well worth it.” ●

AF Trucks was front and centre at Harrogate for the construction, bulk transport and tanker show Tip-ex 2017, with an array of multi-axle products and the New XF and CF tractor units. Inside the halls, tipper operators and decision-makers were drawn to a CF 8x2 rear-steer chassis on the Martrans stand. Mark Armstrong, who owns ABH of Mansfield, tasked Martrans to build an insulated body with a Keith Walking Floor, a first for the show. The result is a truck that can get 19.3 tonnes payload, making it a viable competitor to a traditional tipper. It is specified with a rearsteer, which is slightly heavier than a double-drive, to improve manoeuvrability. Manchester-based LC Vehicle Hire celebrated its 60th anniversary at the show and put a CF tipper-grab on the DAF Trucks stand, fitted out with a steel Thompson body and Palfinger grab. Chris Miller, MD at LC Vehicle Hire, said: “We are passionate supporters of the DAF brand. The tipper product is of the highest quality but our preference for DAF goes much further than that. It’s the dealer support from Evans Halshaw and all the DAF individuals behind the scenes. We just don’t receive the same level of co-operation from other manufacturers.” Bodybuilder Bulkrite, based just outside Shrewsbury in Dorrington, brought an insulated tipper body to Harrogate in the colours of CEMEX. Complete with a two-year warranty, the tailor-made body is on a DAF CF with a day-cab. Happy snappers!

happy snappers

Your DAF snaps from local shows and events By Martin Pidsley As we’re powering through the 2017 summer events calendar, we’ve received hundreds of photos from all of you on social media of your DAF trucks at local shows and events. While we do try to attend as many shows as possible, taking photos to share on social media, we unfortunately can’t go to all the fantastic truck shows held across the country… but that’s where all of you come in! Earlier this month we asked you all to send in your best DAF show pictures on Facebook and Twitter. Hundreds of you sent in your snaps of DAF trucks all polished up and on display, so here a just a few of our favourites so far.

You can send in more photos of your DAF truck at a local show or event to us on Facebook (facebook.com/DAFTrucksUK) or on Twitter (twitter.com/DAFTrucksUK)

A bit of an oldie this truck, but still just as good! Pictured at Crowfield Truck Rally, a local show at the Orwell Truckstop in Ipswich by driver, David Gilson. This 2008 CF 8x4 hookloader from Sackers Recycling mostly deals in scrap metal and waste, but thanks to its custom light kit still looks the part at a local truck meet.

Do proms count? If so Jordan Marriott’s XF for Williams Transport fits the bill! You may have seen this DAF with its custom headboard and rear light kit at other shows across the UK, including Truckbash Nuneaton the first week of June. Marriott spent his own money to get his truck just the way he wanted it, saying “this new XF is the best truck I’ve ever driven.”

Thought I recognised this picture, I took it! This pair of DAFs come from Andy Birkin of White Peak Distribution at Truckfest Peterborough 17. One the left we have the prime mover of the fleet, and Andy’s vehicle on the right used for general haulage across the UK, both 6x2 and 510bhp.

A favourite amongst DAF enthusiasts, Smiths of Bury are always a welcome sight at northern shows. Driver, Matthew Laycock showcased his XF at the Yorkshire Trucking Spectacular Show at the beginning of June. Matthew clearly takes great pride in his XF, this much is evident just from the VIP rope barriers!

Snapped by driver, Chris Heath at the Kelsall Vintage Festival at the end of June. This XF from Haslington Haulage can often be spotted running outdoor building steel work for agricultural buildings, although it spends a lot of time on farms it’s cleaned up well for this pic, well done Chris!

This impressive photo was taken by Stephen Elwood, owner driver with Road Mix as part of the Lagan Group in Northern Ireland. This 2015 CF 440 construction model (with manual gearbox) exhibited at Ballymena Car Fest and Truck Show the first weekend of June. Simple but eyecatching livery with this one, nice detailing on the alloys as well.

PROFILE

New Euro-6 DAF LFs perform a variety of road maintenance duties. Ultra-reliability means the older DAF vehicles (inset) are still going strong

Laying it on the line T

rucks keep Britain moving – it’s an old adage, but it’s a difficult one to dispute. Artics are the most visible commercial vehicle – we see hundreds of them in just half-anhour on the motorway – but, trucks provide a far greater range of services than merely transporting goods from A-to-B. It’s the specialist trucks and, moreover, the equipment on the back of the chassis, that perform myriad jobs that keep the country ‘operational’. Today, countless bodybuilders design and manufacture specialist equipment for pumping concrete, collecting hazardous waste, controlling temperature, cleaning streets – we could go on – and DAF Trucks works with an increasing number of them to satisfy the very precise demands of its customers. DAF dealer North West Trucks’ customer, L&R Roadlines in Ellesmere Port, is a case in point. The company is one of the UK’s largest road marking and road surfacing contractors, delivering

complex road maintenance and repair projects for both the public and private sector. It uses highly specialist equipment from Sandbach-based bodybuilder Somerford Equipment. Somerford Equipment, the UK’s leading designer and builder of high quality road marking vehicles and equipment, supplies L&R Roadlines with a range of DAF vehicles, fitted with all necessary air compressors, boilers, gas systems, prams and tools, and safety equipment including traffic management and LED warning arrows. According to Michael Oakes, General Manager at Somerford Equipment: “DAF has become the manufacturer of choice for the highways maintenance industry as the vehicles deliver the perfect combination of power, flexible configuration, reliability and low fuel consumption as well as being equipped with Euro 6 engines that offer the market’s lowest emission value.” Graham Mills is Workshop Manager at L&R Roadlines and, with over 25 years’ experience

of maintaining vehicles, now manages a team of mechanics responsible for ensuring that his fleet is fully operational to provide assistance around the clock. The DAF fleet has proved reliable considering the demanding environments in which they operate, ranging from construction sites to new roads and motorways. “Vehicle engines have to tick over all day to power all the equipment carried,” said Mills, “and the DAF trucks in our fleet all have their original engines – I wish we could say the same about other vehicles that we own!” L&R Roadlines has been specifying the DAF brand for over 20 years and now operates 36 DAF vehicles. They are used for a wide range of road marking and surfacing applications, including the installation of cats’ eyes, antiskid surfacing, white lines, road and car park markings and road sweeping. The emphasis that the company places on maintenance is critical to continued operations and the low cost of servicing is key to L&R Roadlines remaining loyal to DAF. Only genuine DAF parts are used, which are always available at short notice whenever needed. Also, despite the more stringent Euro 6 emissions regulations, the company says the vehicles are easy to maintain, with high levels of aftersales support a key factor in helping to minimise downtime. “DAF trucks just keep going, no matter what we throw at them,” concluded Mills. ●

BJ03 KOA – the DAF salesman’s nightmare! Ask almost any DAF operator what they feel is their DAF truck’s best feature, and, invariably, they’ll tell you it’s reliability. So, with 1.3 million kilometres on the clock – and after 14 years fault-free service – Paul Ponsonby’s CF 75.310 is a pretty good example of DAF durability. DAF Driver Magazine headed for Birmingham to meet the vehicle which DAF’s local truck salesman will be glad to see the back of.

J03 KOA is a wagon-and-drag combination and was a new acquisition from DAF dealer Greenhous DAF in Willenhall in June 2003. It joined the Bromford-based IT equipment distribution business soon after the company’s 1998 start-up. Some 14-years later and with 1.3 million kilometres under its belt, company director Paul Ponsonby, has decided to retire the ever-faithful old CF – to the considerable relief of the DAF salesman. The 14-strong Ponsonby fleet today includes four DAFs, including a recent used-truck acquisition from another DAF operator, Walkers Shortbread. “Rather than sell it on or let it fester in the yard, I think we might keep it for posterity,” said Paul. “Having said that, we have received an offer of £10,000 for it, proving it still has commercial value – and that’s all down to its outstanding reliability. But,” he said, “after 14 years, we’ve become quite attached to BJ03, and its current driver doesn’t want to see it go at all!” The drawbar unit has been in service full-time since hitting the road in 2003. And it’s been all over Europe, too – from Finland to Portugal and east to Poland. With a predominantly two-man crew, the truck has been under the watchful eye of just three full-time drivers – the longest-serving remains today, Greer Green, who will be the last to drive it later this year. Of course, the truck attracted the usual parts requirements of a hard-working vehicle. Interestingly though, the steering wheel was replaced after the original had worn out! “It’s been a good, honest workshorse,” said Paul, “We’ve needed six new UJs but the driveline has required no major work in 14 years. Our technician tells me the engine, gearbox and rear-axle are as good as new. A high service level from the local DAF dealer has helped the vehicle’s longevity, too,” he said. To coincide with its retirement, and to the delight of Greenhous DAF’s salesman, Ponsonby’s has, in fact, just taken delivery of BJ03’s direct replacement in the shape of a new CF 310 FA. It’s dimensionally identical to its older sibling, but with an altogether more modern Euro 6 powertrain, including an auto-box and a far more up-to-date cab for the driver. “It’s just settling in,” said Paul, “and our driver, Steve Phillips says it drives like a coach. Fuel economy looks very good,” he said, “and we’ll be coupling it to BJ03’s original trailer shortly – the trailer is good for another decade,” he added. ●

Meet Mandy

True blue – love at T his year’s CV Show saw the unveiling of the New CF and XF, and boy was I glad, as it meant I would finally be able to talk about it! Since the beginning of the year I have been lucky enough to have seen and driven the new trucks, but the embargo meant keeping it all under wraps – no mean feat I can assure you! The first time I saw the new product I fell in love with the Jamaica Blue colour, and although the basic cab dimensions remain unchanged, there are some nice touches which enhance the overall look and, importantly, help with aerodynamics. The introduction of the silver trims in the sun visor, grille and lower bumper adds enough bling without going over the top. Opening the driver’s door the new DAF nameplate above the top step adds a touch of class. The cab interior layout remains largely unchanged, but the interior trim is new with several options to choose from. Whether you like the traditional Rustica walnut look trim and the muted browns, or the sleek Argenta aluminium and black, there is something for everyone. The really substantial black-out material for the curtains aids sleep and the new interior light controller, which enables you to adjust both the cabin lights and the night driving lights, is neat.

“Since the beginning of the year I have been lucky enough to have seen and driven the new trucks, but the embargo meant keeping it all under wraps – no mean feat!”

Modern-looking heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls are well positioned and I love the fact that you can now keep warm by using the residual heat of the engine – great for the Day-cab drivers. The silver trim on the steering wheel certainly gives it a lift and the location of the speed function switches on the right hand side of the steering wheel enhances safety and comfort. Cruise,

All smiles as Mandy gets to drive the new DAF XF for the first time

adaptive cruise, downhill speed control and, if fitted, predictive cruise control are all incorporated in the switch on the extreme right. Great attention to HMI (Human Machine Interface); why have multiple switches when just one does the job? A new central switch accesses the speed control menu; this allows you to set your speed functions before driving off. Simply put the ignition on and press once to bring up the speed menus, then press again to toggle

Sales team gets up to speed with the new models The team of DAF Dealer Driver Trainers have been helping out with getting the DAF sales team up to speed with the New CF and XF models at a Ride-and-Drive in Maastricht in the Netherlands. Compared to the Netherlands’ general lack of hills, the area around Maastricht in the south of the country next to the German border is quite up-and-down and has great driving roads to put trucks through their paces.

Sales Executives from across the UK dealer network had a great chance to appreciate for themselves how the new drivelines and speed control features perform. The DAF Dealer Driver Trainers played a valuable part in the event, first of all demonstrating how to get the best out of the truck, before handing over and coaching the sales team. As you might expect, with the dramatic change

in recommended gearing to make the engine operate at around 1000rpm, everyone was keen to see for themselves whether it would actually do the business. And were they impressed? Yes, they certainly were. A thoroughly motivated sales team returned to the UK full of confidence, and desperate to show their customers, existing and new, just what the New CF and XF series can do.

between the settings. Using either of the outside switches will increase and decrease your desired setting. The switch to the left of the right hand group of three switches is your personal road speed limiter. No change to operation, however, but the improvements to functionality are massive. It still sets the upper speed limit when driving on the throttle, but the downhill speed control will automatically kick in at 2mph above your upper set speed to help keep any overrun in check. THE biggest addition here is that Eco Roll will now function when this is activated, meaning you can get the same fuel savings when driving on the throttle as someone who is driving with cruise activated. Sheer Brilliance! The new look dash, which incorporates the updated tacho information in the driving support section, relays the information from your driver card to the DIP – meaning you no longer have to work out when to take a break as it’s clearly displayed for you. All great additions, but are these subtle changes, plus a new colour, enough to say that the best ever drivers’ truck has just got better? Then I drove it and WOW! The changes to the

driveline and introduction of the TraXon automated gearbox are pure witchcraft. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly quiet it is. It didn’t take long to get up to cruising speed; driveline upgrades mean the truck can cruise along laden at 850 - 900rpm which seems bonkers and takes a little time to get used. But struggle it doesn’t! Pulling up to traffic lights I was pleasantly surprised with the TraXon’s ‘creeping’ ability – really nice slow speed control. And the way it shifts gear is just sublime.

“The changes to the driveline and introduction of the TraXon automated gearbox are pure witchcraft. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly quiet this truck is” The EcoMode function is greatly enhanced and no longer reduces the engine’s power or torque. Pulling away from traffic lights I turned the EcoMode off by pressing once the button on the end of the right hand stalk and the change in gearshift points provided brilliant response when I wanted it. The New CF and XF models are certainly game changing and I certainly agree that the best drivers’ truck ever has just got better. Truly. Till next time, drive safe!

Why truckers run the risk of suffering from acid reflux Greasy food, lack of exercise, smoking and being overweight all add to the problems

A

cid reflux is a common problem, where acid travels from the stomach up the food-pipe (oesophagus). It can cause uncomfortable symptoms, including: l Stomach pain l Chest pain (heartburn) l Nausea l Foul taste in mouth l Burping l Difficulty swallowing. Usually these symptoms are worse after eating certain foods or when lying down. If you are getting chest pain, you should visit A&E as it may be something more serious. What causes acid reflux? Acid leaks out of the stomach when the ring of muscle between the stomach and food-pipe is weakened. There are certain risk factors to this happening, including: l Being overweight l Drinking caffeine and alcohol

l Smoking l Eating large amount of fatty foods l Pregnancy l Stress l Reduced exercise l Hiatus hernia l Helicobacter Pylori infection As you can see, a lot of these risk factors are relevant to HGV drivers. It can be a stressful and demanding job. During long journeys you may need caffeine to keep you alert, you may snack on the wrong kind of fatty foods and you do not get much exercise on the job, both of which can lead to weight gain. It is important to look after your health while at work. Simple measures can make a big difference, like going for a short walk on a break or eating healthy snacks/meals. How to manage the symptoms Sometimes acid reflux can be managed without the need to seek medical assistance. There are over-the-counter syrups and tablets from the pharmacy that

Simple measures can make a big difference, like going for a short walk on a break or eating healthy snacks/meals

can help. For example, Gaviscon. As well as this, it would help to assess what the cause of the reflux may be. Looking at the above risk factors, you could look to eliminate them to see if it helps your symptoms, ie. reducing/stopping caffeine and see if the reflux disappears. Of course, some risk factors cannot be eliminated, such as pregnancy! If these measures have not worked then seek advice from your GP. Your GP will be able to advise you on lifestyle factors to help the symptoms. They may also decide to do a stool test to check for bacteria called Helicobacter. They may decide to start some medication to suppress the acid production in the stomach. If after one month of medication and a negative stool sample, they may decide that you need to go for an endoscopy, which is where a scope is placed through your mouth and into your food-pipe to look for any other causes. An endoscopy sounds scary but it is a very routine and safe procedure. Do not let this put you off visiting your GP. The majority of reflux symptoms are managed with the correct lifestyle factors and medication.
