PARTNER OPPORTUNITY IN CLOUD ERA SANJAY MOHAPATRA

sanjay@smechannels.com

Cloud Computing: It’s a two-billion-dollar opportunity in India and partners who are early movers are seen taking advantage of the opportunity. As per studies, partners profitability is 1.5x times than the partners who have not adopted cloud. Other thing is most of the customers today are keen to adopt cloud for the simple reason of reducing TCO and enhanced scalability. So, the partners’ opportunity is immense. It starts from cloud consulting to training to hosting to right sizing solutions and technology integration, etc. Imagine, a partner is earning only 5% of margin or less than that after investing upfront on the products although vendors or distie provides some bit of credit. In the same situation, the margin becomes 11% if you are a cloud partner. The beauty is that you do not need to invest on products or do not need bank credit or other forms of credit, etc. Only investment he needs to do is to have certified professionals to handle various cloud opportunities and situation. One of the strong areas in the cloud is consulting and managed services for security, backup and DR. Of course, there are a lot of services including compute, storage, application, mail messaging, DevOps, etc., but the above said services are the low hanging fruits which partners can adopt to start. Customers in these day are aware about this but a little confused. There are various types of cloud computing at a various price point, so the customers need only partners to help them here. The other thing is that the partners can create bundle of solutions with special pricing for the customers. If he can develop applications for some category of customers, then he is able to reach out to a larger audience through the public cloud providers. So, the margin opportunity enhances beyond 1.5x times. Now the partners need to know the relevance of cloud providers and their difference between AWS, IBM, Azure, Google, Cloud4C, XcellHost, Digital Ocean, e2e, etc., and, provide right consulting to the customers. So if the total market size is 125 billion dollar and cloud computing is 2 billion dollar, imagine what is the opportunity for the partners in next 5- 10 years.

CHANNEL MENTORS

VISHAL SOPORY, CEO & CO-FOUNDER, CORPKART

THE DAYS OF SINGLE MAN OPERATIONS DEALING IN CASH ARE LONG GONE Corpkart is a unique company in the Channel ecosystem, which has taken a different rout of being an online market place for all infrastructure products. The concept has not only been disliked by the traditional partners but also been conspired to stop such moves. However, Vishal Sopory, ceo & co-founder, corpkart has done it to a greater success. As an innovator and mentor, he spoke about channel channelings. Excerpts.

You being the channel veteran what is your reckoning of total channel market size in India? There are about 10,000 channel participants in India. These will be companies organised as resellers, VARs, SIs and Service Providers. Collectively they address an IT market size of over 10 Bn USD. This is the size of commercial IT in India. What are the major challenges of Indian channel partners? The small size of typical Indian channel partners is the main limitation and this manifests in most of the challenges they face. It hinders their access to opportunities of any significant size and in turn limits access to resources, new technologies, growth and most significantly ability to attract and retain quality personnel. In a working capital intensive business where the ability to receive and extend credit is para-

mount being small is a definite disadvantage. Given low barriers to entry, this will remain the challenge and only players who will be successful will be the ones who will strive and bulk up. What channel needs to do to enhance their business? The channel needs to organise itself in more formal structures, so as it can resolve access to capital and talent. The days of single man operations dealing in cash are long gone. This is in addition to keeping a tab on technology trends and selecting right OEM partnerships to address their customer needs. Is there any fear in the mind about taking risk around investing in new domains? Markets evolve, and most participants have to follow the trends sooner or later. There are

“IT IS TIME FOR SMALLER PLAYERS TO CONSOLIDATE AND POOL THEIR RESOURCES TO BE FINANCIALLY STRONGER COMPANIES. always pioneers who take risks and lead into new domains with investments. Sometimes they fail but in most cases, the benefits are disproportionate given early mover advantage. Every business must earmark some resources and make investments in new, unknown areas. Why channel is always in financial trouble? Again it is back to the size, informal structure and low barriers to entry. Small operators who have a tiny capital base and limited ability to attract working capital financing are dependent on suppliers to keep them afloat. Single delay in a project payment and they are in default or on the verge of default. It is time for smaller players to consolidate and pool their resources to be financially stronger companies.

Today data centres have come to the forefront of conscious attention. SME Channels spoke to different stakeholders to find out more about what it means to be a modern Data Centre and its different facets. BY DEEPAK SINGH

deepak@smechannels.com

A

Data Centre can be defined as any facility that is used to house computer systems and associated equipments and components, such as storage systems and communications. Data centre landscape has undergone sea changes in the past decade. This is attributed to changing requirements of the businesses. Subsequently the role of the data centre provider has also transformed. “In terms of energy efficiency and the security, data centres have undergone sea changes,” says Seema Ambastha, SVP - India & Global Business– Netmagic (An NTT Communications Company. The modern data centers have evolved from a traditional resource centres to more connected pools and highly efficient and more eco-friendly these days. More integrated solutions are built to meet the ever-growing needs of the modern, competitive world and other technical challenges, says WebWerks. A modern Data Center is all about efficiency and longevity.

“FOR THE OBVIOUS BENEFITS THAT OUTSOURCING DELIVERS, CO-LOCATION CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR DRIVER IN CONSUMPTION OF DATA CENTER MARKET.” KALYAN MUPPANENI, FOUNDER & CEO, PI DATACENTERS

Efficiency: l In energy consumption in order to keep power costs down l In processes to meet customers’ business needs & enhance experience at every interaction. For instance, entry check processes which allows customer engineers to get to their racks quickly, quick implementation of new racks or cross connects. Longevity: The architecture, quality of equipment - its implementation & maintenance should be such that it remains usable for a long period. This ensures customers do not need to move their equipment after few years because of deterioration in the DC infrastructure standards.

Colocation: Major Driver for Data Centers “The Indian data centre market is on a significant growth trajectory and is expected to grow to $3.2 billion in 2018. By 2020, India is forecasted to become one of the largest markets for data centres in Asia-Pacific,” says Sumit Mukhija, CEO of STT GDC India. Colocation is the major driver for datacenter industry with respect to the datacenter demand in the Global market, where it was estimated to be of $ 29.83 billion in 2016 and is expected to reach $76.37 billion by 2022 growing at a CAGR of 17%. Public Cloud adoption is growing faster, but the general Data Centre market is also registering double-digit annual growth. There are instances when clients are taking workloads back to the Data Centre from public cloud. The cloud service providers are also relying on colocation to meet shifting capacity requirements in emerging markets. This definitely presents a business opportunity for colocation. While the cloud is picking up, physical hosting

is not something that would be out of the picture. Enterprises continue to have their critical and compliance heavy applications, hosted on physical servers. “For the obvious benefits that outsourcing delivers, co-location continues to be a major driver in consumption of data center market,” says Kalyan Muppaneni, Founder & CEO, Pi DATACENTERS. Different DC service providers have different strategies. “For GPX, Colocation Service is the prime focus area. And GPX has created a market place where other Cloud and Managed service providers provide those services to customers located at GPX,” says Manoj Paul – MD, GPX India Pvt Ltd. GPX has carved a niche for itself. It has a strong, unique value proposition – truly carrier neutral colocation service provider for which it has deployed state-of-art, highly automated infrastructure; technically skilled team & very efficient processes. Unlike other DCs managed by Carriers & similar players, it does not sell/ resell bandwidth. It is a truly carrier neutral DC. However, other DC operators provide themselves provide multiple other services and start competing with other managed and cloud service providers.

Security is Paramount It can be said with absolute certainty that Data Centres should be rock solid when it comes to security. Apart from perimeter fencing, multiple levels of authentication are required to access the Data Suites. Closed circuit TV should be in place to monitor all movement in the building. For GPX, physical security is critical. Manoj Paul of GPX says, “We have multiple levels of physical access controls built in. Employees & visitors are given privilege-based access. Visitor management system is in place to record visitor entry & exit. Any visitor to the Data Center is required

30 SME CHANNELS JUNE 2018

to enter details in the Visitor Log. Visitor logs & material movement logs are maintained & records retained for at least 90 days. They are escorted by GPX personnel to their specific colocation area.” All entry and exit points of the premises are provided with electronic access card systems. The data center is accessible only to authorized personnel using three levels of authentication - electronic access cards, PIN code and biometric identification. Visitors have to be escorted at all times by an authorized employees/ security personnel. All critical locations monitoring the data center entry/exit points, utility rooms and sensitive areas (e.g., cages, equipment rooms, etc.) are covered by access card readers & security cameras. There are adequate controls to prevent removal/ tampering with the same.

A shift to cloud Organizations have also been adopting cloud computing solutions like public or hybrid cloud; this has affected how businesses shape up and utilize data centres. A decade ago, colocation was the preferred model for businesses for which colocation was more efficient and cost effective than building their own onsite data centre environments. There are some Data Centre operators who are providing colocation services and still sticking to this model. However in the recent past adoption of cloud is gaining popularity. Data Center (DC) market in India is poised to touch $3.8 billion mark by 2020, with an exponential growth from the current valuation of $2.2 billion. Owing to multiple factors like growth in cloud adoption and the data processing needs posed by enterprises across industry verticals, the market is predicted to reach a $7 billion point, with a growth rate of 23 % by 2022. The emergence of convenient and secure mobility systems has ensured that work is no longer limited to a physical workspace. Therefore,

“SINCE ORGANIZATIONS NOW HAVE THE TOOLS TO DERIVE SUCH INSIGHTS FROM DATA, DATACENTERS NOW PLAY A MORE CRUCIAL ROLE IN AN IT SET-UP” RAVINDRA KELKAR, SENIOR DIRECTOR, ENTERPRISE & PUBLIC SECTOR, CITRIX INDIA.

datacenters that allow employees to access work data from a remote location are slowly migrating from physical systems to virtual cloud based solutions. This shift is also challenging the existing datacenter industry to re-innovate and introduce newer solutions. The data pools generated by the enterprises, need intelligent infrastructure base in a scalable model for the ever-increasing volumes, which includes storage for housing, network and compute for transfer and processing. Thus, the cloud and data center market are proportionally growing with the organizations moving towards the trends of the day. The services offered by data center players are being shaped in sync to these trends and making the offerings more pro enterprise. Also, with the enterprises inclining towards applications and tools on a SaaS model, the cloud market and hence the data center market are growing proportionally.

Growth for the data centre operators The digitized economy that begun to take root a few years ago is now turning into a full-fledged

mission for organizations to make the strategic shift towards technological solutions. With further impetus given by the government to adopt such solutions, businesses are making the most of the resources at hand to use tools like cloud, AI and data analytics to store, collect and analyze petabytes of data and drive actionable insights from them. “Since organizations now have the tools to derive such insights from data, datacenters now play a more crucial role in an IT set-up,” says Ravindra Kelkar - Senior Director, Enterprise & Public Sector, Citrix India. GPX has a two pronged growth strategy – one is leveraging the existing unique ecosystem that we have built & secondly expand the colocation space to foray into new segments. The first one involves partnering with Internet Exchanges; we have 4 IXes operational in the data center – this creates a lucrative value proposition for ISPs & Content Providers. GPX is in the process of building a new DC in Mumbai which should be operational in May end 2019, meeting similar benchmark of infrastructure. We have also expanded space in the existing premises which will be operational very soon.

Looking to the future Datacenters today need to position themselves, much beyond vanilla bricks and mortars story. For them to be relevant in this ever-evolving enterprise space, it is of critical importance that data centers focus on scalability, flexibility and uncompromised security. “Today we see increased propensity of data centers investing on software defined environments

“IN TERMS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND THE SECURITY, DATA CENTRES HAVE UNDERGONE SEA CHANGES” SEEMA AMBASTHA, SVP - INDIA & GLOBAL BUSINESS– NETMAGIC (AN NTT COMMUNICATIONS COMPANY)

with automation as the key, building their services around outcome-based models, core data center services getting a wraparound of AI and ML. In short, all innovations are targeted towards being aligned to customers’ business outcome, service excellence and service relevance,” says Kalyan of Pi DATACENTERS. Rajarshi Bhattacharyya, Country Head at SUSE says, “The industry is witnessing a fundamental shift towards the software-defined data center (SDDC). Adoption of OpenStack Cloud and Software-defined Storage is slowly eating into the tier 2 and tier 3 storage requirements of an enterprise.”

Finally: With the passage of time the amount of data currently being created will grow exponentially, and that’s changing how businesses operate. The data centre has changed. As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, there is a paradigm shift in how businesses are addressing issues towards data centres. This has led to a changing role for the data centre operator. While many business are in the process of migrating new data centres to public cloud and leased co-location facilities, those who plan to build their own data centre, they should ensure that the facilities need to be more efficient.

s per Wikipedia, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area. It also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU and EEA. The GDPR aims primarily to give control to citizens and residents over their personal data and to simplify the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU. Superseding the Data Protection Directive, the regulation contains provisions and requirements pertaining to the processing of personally identifiable information of data subjects inside the European Union. Business processes that handle personal data must be built with privacy by design and by default, meaning that personal data must be stored using pseudonymization or full anonymization, and use the highest-possible privacy settings by default, so that the data is not available publicly without explicit consent, and cannot be used to identify a subject without additional information stored separately. No personal data may be processed unless it is done under a lawful basis specified by the regulation, or if the data controller or processor has received explicit, opt-in consent from the data’s owner. The business must allow this permission to be withdrawn at any time. A processor of personal data must clearly disclose what data is being collected and how, why it is being processed, how long it is being retained, and if it is being shared with any third-parties. Users have the right to request a portable copy of the data collected by a processor in a common format, and the right to have their data erased under certain circumstances. Public authorities, and businesses whose core activities centre around regular or systematic processing of personal data, are required to employ a data protection officer (DPO), who is responsible for managing compliance with the GDPR. Businesses must report any

data breaches within 72 hours if they have an adverse effect on user privacy. It was adopted on 14 April 2016, and after a two-year transition period, becomes enforceable on 25 May 2018. Because the GDPR is a regulation, not a directive, it does not require national governments to pass any enabling legislation and is directly binding and applicable. The regulation applies if the data controller, or processor, or the data subject is based in the EU. Under certain circumstances, the regulation also applies to organisations based outside the EU if they collect or process personal data of individuals located inside the EU.

Impact on India Although India has its own regulations governing data privacy and security, the focus now is fully on individual organizations’ ability to embrace GDPR without reservation. This is understandable given the cost impact of noncompliance by companies; in fact, one can safely assume that with this financial year onwards organizations will have a dedicated budget for regulatory compliance and data security. Organizations in India need to place compliance and data security as a priority considering the cost for violating these privacy laws is about to get very expensive. GDPR can cost up to 20 million Euros or 4% of annual turnover, whichever is higher, for intentional or negligent violations. With those kinds of stakes, investing in compliance now is the only right move for a sustainable business model. Pragmatic compliance does not need to be an expensive exercise too. Expenses are relatively low if implemented with a commonsense approach. Understanding the parameters of the applicable legislation is key to getting it right. WinMagic’s latest survey of nearly 500 IT Decision Makers (March 2018) found that a significant number of businesses were lacking in systems needed to meet the data management requirements of GDPR, continuous encryption of per-

proliferation of mobile phones and usage of the internet, it is very important for governing bodies to ensure that their people’s data and privacy are safeguarded. Digital economy can only flourish when you connect people, process, data and things in an ethical, meaningful and secure way. We feel that GDPR is a step towards that. The toughest aspect of the GDPR is its guidelines to adhere to the security policies by organization handling EU data in and outside of the state. In order to be compliant, businesses must begin by introducing the correct security protocols in their journey to reaching GDPR compliance, including encryption, two-factor authentication and key management strategies to avoid severe legal, financial and reputational consequences. India has evolved to become a technology hub equipped with deep expertise and GDPR could be an opportunity for Indian companies to stand out as leaders in providing privacy compliant services and solutions.” Arun Balasubramanian, MD, Qlik India said: “The GDPR applies to companies in Europe (specifically those in the EU / EEA), so it will affect an Indian company which has a European office, or is marketing to European customers. In terms of readiness, companies have had a long time to

prepare for GDPR, but as the GDPR bar is quite high, many may be struggling to be ready come 25th May 2018. The biggest challenge in meeting the requirements is understanding not only what personal data companies have in their multiple systems, but also understanding the relationships of that data as well as who has access to it. This includes monitoring the consent and tracking of who opted in or out in for campaigns, newsletters, or petitions. GDPR is considered by many to be the highest global standard, and many countries have and will continue to strengthen their privacy laws in the near future.” Despite the impending deadline, most APAC businesses which serve the EU market or have significant transactions that capture PII are still not fully prepared. According to the third biennial EY Global Forensic Data Analytics Survey by Ernst & Young (EY), only 12 per cent of firms in APAC have a GDPR compliance plan in place. “While GDPR affects private and public sector organizations handling PII, certain key industries will have heightened exposure as a result of the volumes of PII data they handle as well as the nature of their business,” said Rajesh Maurya, Regional Vice President, India & SAARC, Fortinet. “These

include e-commerce-based organizations operating internationally, as well as companies that serve significant numbers of tourists, visitors, or expatriates from the EU.” So, organizations preparing for GDPR must focus on reconfiguring their business processes and IT architectures, as well as reducing exposure of PII data. George Chang, VP, APAC, Forcepoint, said: “As the capacity to collect, store and analyze data for commercial purposes continue to grow exponentially, GDPR seeks to strengthen and unify personal data privacy and protection – putting people in control of their data and ensuring that businesses treat this data in a fair, transparent and secure manner. It’s no surprise that this seismic shift in the way we approach data security has caused a ripple effect across the globe, with many countries following suit and modernizing their own privacy and data protection laws.” Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, said, “GDPR is the biggest change in European data protection laws in more than 20 years, bringing this area of law into the digital age. It designates individual choice as a priority over everything else. It stands on the pillars of mutual trust and respect,

“GDPR MAY SPAWN OTHER REGIONAL BLOCS TO BRING OUT THEIR OWN VERSION OF DATA PROTECTION REGIME.”

FORTINET LISTS THE TOP THREE INDUSTRIES IMPACTED BY GDPR RETAIL: Retail businesses most likely to curate GDPR-relevant PII data include cross-border e-commerce operations, multi-venue retail chains, hospitality, travel, and F&B businesses. Brick-and-mortar businesses serving EU customers can also find themselves liable to GDPR PII protections. Paying with a credit or debit card, providing shipping address information and participating in a customer loyalty program all fall under the protection of GDPR.

HEALTHCARE: GDPR extends its coverage to non-EU organizations storing or processing the medical information of EU persons. GDPR enacts particularly stringent protection and processes for handling particular types of PII medical information. In general, an organization may collect and process personal medical information only if it is necessary for patient treatment and diagnosis, and with the explicit consent of the patient. GDPR also mentions genetic data as an area of particular concern.

FINANCIAL SERVICES: Financial organizations often maintain huge stockpiles of PII data on account holders. They also consume and generate vast quantities of highly personal marketing data to support selling financial services and assessing credit worthiness of commercial and individual customers.

both of which are core to running any sustainable, ethical organization. It will govern how organizations within and outside the EU will collect, manage, process, and protect personal data while respecting individual choice.” He added: “To me, this is a golden opportunity for India to drive thought leadership in the global market.” Rahul Kumar, Country Manager – WinMagic India, added, “Companies in Europe are already setting aside an average of $1.4 million as part of their GDPR readiness effort. The scene is no different in the US, where companies are spending $1 – $10 million towards GDPR readiness. It is also possible that as organizations’ data pool continues to grow, evolve and move, they will start institutionalizing programs on data privacy, security and user experience.” He added, “GDPR may spawn other regional blocs to bring out their own version of data protection regime. Although many countries maintain their own data privacy and security regulation, a blurred line separates the rights of the individual and organization. GDPR has removed this ambiguity in data management. Of course, there is murmur in certain quarters that data protection should not be driven by the fear of contravention, but by the need for accessibility and user experience. However, striking the right balance is a challenge to both businesses and regulators.” GDPR is teaching us to collect less information from our customers, unless we really need it. Even if you don’t need to comply with GDPR, this is simply a good practice. Your business saves money by having less data to protect and your customers gain the privacy that many desire in the process. Want users to use secure passwords? Provide them with password management tools and training, especially if users can use the same tool at home to benefit their families. Humans will do what is easiest, so it is our job to make privacy as easy as possible. “Individuals need to take control of their privacy the best they can. It isn’t impossible and often it isn’t even hard, you simply have to keep your eyes open and not surrender sensitive information to organisations that don’t need it. Carefully consider how much information you are asked to surrender compared to what you are being provided in return. Your identity is valuable and you shouldn’t give it up for trivial services. Sadly once your information is stolen it can be impossible to put the genie back in the bottle, don’t give out your details to those who don’t need it. I have a secret birthday I don’t share with sites that ask… It’s my real one.” said Chester Wisniewski, Principal Research Scientist, Sophos Log onto www.smechannels.com to access the entire article SME CHANNELS 37 JUNE 2018

AI

MICROSOFT RUUH SHOWS GREAT POTENTIAL AI is going to influence all walks of life in India. A recent report published by Accenture suggest that around 83% of Indian bankers believe that AI will work alongside humans in the next two years, which is higher than the global average of 79%.

T

oday, Today, AI is impacting all walks of life. Not only is it making the life of the people easier but also bringing convenience to the transactions. Every industry is taking advantage of AI to optimize their sales, marketing and overall perception about the company. Puneet Agarwal, Principal Engineering Manager, Microsoft says, “Earlier, AI was not much used but now it is being used in everything. There are three major reasons for this trend - one is data: RAM of your phone is more than hard disk nowadays. The data has grown drastically. Last year only, there has been generation of some zetabytes of data. With more data more insights are available, so many decisions can be made using AI. Second is the compute power. These days, devises are becoming more and more powerful which is enabling to save large amount of data. Third is things like deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc. are impacting the business

outcome of the organizations.” Apart from business applications, consumer applications are also being influenced by AI. who are using their phones for setting alarms and searching information, etc. Today, it is impossible to sell the devices without AI. AI is making the products appealing in a very competitive market situation.” AI for the consumers are coming in the form of Chatbots which are making the devices interactive for the customers. The overwhelming response of consumers for Chatbots have triggered a flurry of AI Chatbots in the market. Microsoft Chatbot RUUH is one such application. Integrated with Facebook and Skype, it is amplifying user experience too. As per Quora RUUH is created for entertainment purposes, which talks in English as per Facebook description, but it also can talk in Hinglish, which is good for the Indians too. Puneet adds, “RUUH is designed for the Indian youth. They share all their emotions -

happiness and sorrow. From internships, to relatives in the hospital, to breakups, people share everything over FB and Skype. And RUUH is available on both the platforms.” The idea is if you want to chat with someone, RUUH is there for you. It is the kind of a friend with whom you can talk about anything. She will remember who you are - even in future. As per Puneet Natasha from Hike, which is a competition, was not able to hold the conversations, but RUUH is able to do it. The beauty of RUUH is that it has been developed in India to a large extent. As per Puneet RUUH has managed over 1.5 million conversations in during IPL. The conversation is human like with proper awareness and free flowing.

Conclusion… Although RUUH is today used in for entertainment purpose of the young people but it has all potential to be part of the businesses applications too.
