Aspire E5 Series EDITORIAL

DIGITAL INDIA KARMA NEGI

karma@smechannels.com

I STILL REMEMBER THAT DAY COUPLE OF YEARS back when while getting the Wi-fi connection at home the guys from this particular telecom company kept referring to it has Hi-fi. That very instant it put a doubt in me on the abilities of these people who have been suddenly thrust with these technologies without proper training. But today we are talking about Digital India which promises to vanish the long serpentine queues to submit driving license or meeting doctors in government hospitals; and also offers free access to wi-fi, even for a short time, in public places. On July 1 among much fanfare Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced another ambitious project “Digital India” with the objective to providing digital connectivity to India’s citizen. The industry committed USD 75 billion at the launch of Digital India week. What this means for India’s citizen is access to government services over the internet, like the Digital locker; filing of driver license application online, allowing people to book appointments with government hospital doctors on the net and BSNL’s ambitious plan to cover 250 locations with at least 2500 hotspots in the country. It’s an ambitious project but nonetheless is much relevant to India as the country raises its presence in the radars of various organisations. But much will depend on how the scheme of things pans out in the months or years to come; how well it’s implemented will bear positive results. There is a humungous task before the government if we are to become a powerful digital country: upgrading of the existing infrastructure, preparing the required skill-set who can handle these things with dexterity, strict regulations etc. As a digitally enabled nation we will be ready to face an influx of data which apart from requiring storage, archival, retrieval also demands security. Security should be at the top of the government’s mind if we want to make true the vision of Digital India. In light of the various cyber attacks unfolded in the last couple of months we know how it can cripple organisations and have the ability to bring down even the superpowers. All in all, the initiative is great; it will open up vast business opportunities for everyone thus propelling the country on the path of greater development.

GOI’S GUIDELINES FOR SAFETY AND SURVEILLANCE STANDARDS Telecommunication Engineering Centre, with contribution from Smart 24x7, introduced its report on M2M communications

R

ecently there had been a lot of discussion on safety and security and there are lots of companies are making wearable and application about safety and security, health and fitness, etc. With the technological advancement in every field Smart24x7 in order to ensure safety would be focussing around the idea of Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or “things” embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. First documented in 1999, according to Gartner, Inc. (a technology research and advisory corporation), there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020. But for this it is important that everyone should follow the same standards and in order to ensure this the Government of India under the initiative of Department of Telecommunication (DoT)

and TEC have created the guidelines of M2M Communications. In the conference held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Telecommunication Engineering Centre with contribution from Smart24x7, introduced its report on M2M communications and claimed that this innovation would certainly change the way humans live. According to the report, DoT would contribute in policy making and setting up of safety standards in India. These guidelines are very much instrumental and are used in the smart cities where wearable and the others safety and security applications and appliances are getting used in homes to standardised the behaviour of the devices as well as the responses provided to the victims. The thought is to cover all the smart cities under this innovation with initial focus on covering 100 smart cities. The devices and solutions to be used should be scalable and work on the pre-defined standards, so that new devices and solutions can be integrated with ease. According to CP Singh, Founder, Smart Group, “Safety and security is paramount, and the government has taken various initiatives to safeguard its

What is M2M Communication? It refers to the technologies that allow wired / wireless system to communicate with the devices of same ability. M2M uses a device (sensor, meter etc.) to capture an ‘event’ (motion, video, meter reading, temperature etc.), which is relayed through a network (wireless, wired or hybrid) to an application (software program), that translates the captured event into meaningful information. What is the Need of M2M Communication in Safety & Surveillance? India has 129 police officers for every 100000 citizens. According to a UN report, the worldwide average is close to 350 officers per 100,000 citizens. 1 This translates equipping officers with the right technology to manage the massive population of 1.2 billion of the country. Where all this innovation can be used? Safety and surveillance finds its application in the following verticals like vehicles with video surveillance and vehicle tracking systems. It can be used for women/citizen safety using smartphone/wearable devices. The user can be in city-wide video surveillance systems. One of the usages can be in Video surveillance for banks, ATM, jewellery stores, and other establishments. Local smart home wireless networks for home security. Citizen response management system (CRMS) can also take advantage of the communication. Will it be helpful in decreasing the crime rates in India? Smart phones and Cloud based M2M, if integrated with existing databases of safety & security agencies over the API’s, may help identify the suspect against the criminal or terrorist activity. The identification might be done by comparing the images of crime or the free flow text describing the crime scene.

citizens. Safety & surveillance ensures a safe and secure environment, not just limited to video surveillance, emergency response, and technology enabled smart premise. Safety and security M2M applications are relevant to all of the domains such as home, medical and industrial. M2M has dramatically expanded the scope of available home security and safety products.”

orsair compares the PC DIY with LEGO set; always fun to assemble. Once commanding close to 50% of the PC market share, the advent of laptops and especially Tablets nibbled away its dominant position in the market, so much so that it was almost written off. But in the recent times it has risen again like a Phoenix from ashes. The industry disagress: “The DIY market was never written off ”, it only slowed down as laptops, tablets and later smartphones flooded the market.” While it may not see the same glory days but its future is being charted out in glowing words. While the PC assembling market as we knew may be dead but there are a segment of customers who refuse to let it die and vendors too are not far behind in marshalling the cause of DIY PC market. Corsair recently got into the PC market with DIY gaming machine Bulldog, Zotac has its ZBox and ECS has LIVA. DIY focused Gigabyte has opened new service centers in India to support DIY PC users. As

part of its strategy Intel wants to reinvigorate the desktop market with new form factors like the Next Unit of Computing and portable All in Ones.

The Rise of DIY With its low PC penetration India still has untapped potential in the desktop market; and as per the industry DIY is helping in reviving this market with different form factor PCs. Today PCs are not confined to a specific form factor, and has evolved to mini PC, compute stick or USB which boasts of giving the same functionality as the standard PC and more. Gamers use high and ultra-high end configurations which need the biggest and meanest of form factors. Then there are SFF which are an ideal fit for Home and have designed to be a part of home décor says ADATA. Intel is coming out with Compute Stick or ‘PC on-a-stick’ which is expected to be the next big thing.

DIY PC market is still at a nascent stage and it will be sometime before we come to know its full acceptability in the market. It’s anticipated that once consumers exhaust the tablets and smartphones will start moving towards PC which is an encouraging sign for the industry. The low PC and internet penetration as seen as opportunity for the growth of PC market and the increasing in gaming and enthusiast community PC seems to have a bright and stable future ahead. While the overall prices are coming down for most system form factors only time will tell if the new form factors can help shoot the sales of DIY PC higher.

“INTEL IS FOCUSSED ON REINVIGORATING PC” RAJIV BHALLA, DIRECTOR (SALES AND MARKETING), INTEL SOUTH ASIA

PC DIY Market The surge in the PC DIY market is due to the ongoing innovation in the PC segment with compelling features and form factors. New PCs offer new ways to intuitively interact with their PC, such as touch and the latest apps; greater ability to share multimedia content with others. New PCs also offer higher processing power that makes web browsing and page view feel fast. Users of new PCs with new components (HDD, graphics processors, displays etc.) can enjoy more lifelike and powerful gaming experiences. Intel is focussed on reinvigorating PC through compelling new products and new form factors like the Next Unit of Computing (NUCs) and portable All-in-Ones (AIOs) in addition to 2 in 1s, desktops, laptops and AIOs. For DIY enthusiasts Intel has created the Next Unit of Computing or NUC PC — a kit-form ultra-compact PC which users can configure and assemble. We recently launched a campaign `#MyPcMyPride’ to amplify the value of custom-built PC, meeting individual computing needs. Through this campaign, Intel seeks to illustrate how today’s systems, when compared to desktops from just five years ago, bring alive a whole new computing experience for users such as better graphics, superior audio and higher power efficiency at affordable price points.

Opportunities IDC’s research in 2014 suggests that end-user spending is looking up, with 66 percent of the respondents (in the IDC ConsumerScape surveys) zeroing in on PCs as their next purchase against devices like smartphones and tablets. Additionally, low penetration levels also open up huge opportunities in the India PC business.

Market for SME The DIY market is of strong relevance for the SME segment in India. Intel is driving various form factor innovations, along with its channel partners, to cater to SMEs and drive new usage models in the category. We see close to 20% of the overall consumption demand coming from SMEs SMEs can still benefit from building their own machines. DIY desktops can be customized to meet specific business & end user needs. The upgrades and repairs of these products are easier. And one can ensure the quality of every part that goes into the machine.

GTM One of the main areas of focus for Intel in 2015 is its PC strategy which aims to (i) reinvigorate the category through compelling new products, (ii) reinvent the category through new form factors like the NUCs and portable AIOs and (iii) lastly, remodel the category through brand new usage models and experiences.

RAJESH KHURANA, COUNTRY MANAGER (SOUTH ASIA - INDIA & SAARC, ASEAN), SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY

40% OR MORE OF THE WORLD’S DIGITAL STORAGE IS ON A SEAGATE PRODUCT

In the past 50 years many established companies have been obliterated from the global map and many new companies have taken their place but there are also many companies which are still living healthy. One of those companies is Seagate which has been moving steadily against all waves for the last 35 years. SME Channels spoke to Rajesh Khurana, Country Manager (South Asia - India & SAARC, ASEAN), Seagate Technology, when the team is celebrating 35th year anniversary. Excerpts…

What is Seagate’s secret of success and sustenance for the last 35 years, as many companies have simply perished? The advent of the connected world has given rise to trends such as the consumerisation of IT, big data and enterprise mobility. These are creating the need for increasingly connected data ecosystems, and this is driving demand for digital storage capacity.Small businesses’ demand for digital storage is also rising, and this has created a need for more efficient and safer storage options. Seagate’s focus on continued innovation and ability to address the storage requirements of a broad range of organisations and individuals has helped the company to become the forefront of change. As depicted by our ‘living logo’, which was launched at the start of 2015, Seagate has evolved from just being a hard disk drive vendor to becoming a complete solutions and storage company. Today, 40% or more of the world’s digital storage is on a Seagate product. We sell to 8 out of 10 of the world’s largest global cloud providers and we have over 9,000 patents, so we are leading the market as well as the technology.

28 SME CHANNELS JULY 2015

What is the company’s strategy to cater to small businesses, which have completely different set of requirements? Seagate creates solutions that are customised for market needs. The SME segment is recognised as one of the critical pillars of the Indian economy. With almost 50 million SMEs and growing, it’s a world of limitless opportunities. SMEcompanies need the technology solutions that can optimally utilise existing resources to significantly increase the efficiency of their operations and the productivity of their employees. For example, there are many organisations with networks of up to 50 computers, and with little-tonone IT support available in-house. For cases like these, Seagate experts evaluate the storage needs and provide Networked Attached Storage (NAS) solutions. Designed to be easily up and running without dedicated IT support, Seagate NAS OS 4 helps small businesses stay organised and focused. What isthe strategy of the company to cater to world of virtual computing, cloud computing, IoT, Big Data, etc.?

To make the Internet of Things a reality, we clearly need to address the requirement for transformational storage and services solutions, because of the massive explosion in data. Seagate is the leader in enterprise storage and not surprisingly also at the heart of the cloud infrastructure. As a key partner to private and public cloud and managed services providers, Seagate technology is found in enterprise environments and cloud data centres, and is used by managed service providers to small businesses and consumers. In other words, Seagate has been enabling cloud computing and cloud storage from the data centre to your pocket for some time. Based on our decades of experience in highdensity, large-scale enterprise, institution, government, managed services and co-location environments,we see an opportunity to offer new and emerging technologies from a cloud perspective to deliver the infrastructure that modern organisations need, innovating across the full information stack. How is the company approaching the Indian market, which is riding an agenda of digitization, make in India

and massive infrastructural refresh? India is a key market for Seagate and it sees a plethora of opportunities here. Consumers in India are rapidly embracing and adopting new technologies like cloud and portable storage, and several visionary government campaigns have opened up many new avenues for Seagate as a company. Under the Digital India campaign, we expectto see deeper mobile device penetration and increasing use of video, big data analytics and the cloud. All of this will continue to drive data growth and require larger and more effective storage solutions. Also, the Indian government’s Smart City vision will generate a greater dependency on technology and hence an amplified need for critical data storage, analysis and retrieval. Seagate has the expertise and experience to help organisations and consumers benefit from these initiatives. As the leader in storage solutions, Seagate will continue to bring to market innovative solutions that will meet evolving business and consumer lifestyle needs.

“WE SELL TO 8 OUT OF 10 OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST GLOBAL CLOUD PROVIDERS AND WE HAVE OVER 9,000 PATENTS, SO WE ARE LEADING THE MARKET AS WELL AS THE TECHNOLOGY.”

What is the Indian strategy from the partners’ perspective? Seagate works very closely with its partners in India to deliver best-in-class storage solutions and innovations to customers. We have a very loyal base of partners in India and continuously take partner and customer feedback to ensure we create a win-win scenario. Extensive and close partnerships with channels are essential for gaining success in the market. Seagate has been collaborating closely with its partners to deliver an unparalleled record of innovation to the market. The Seagate Partner Program provides highpowered services to increase profitability of its channel partners and meet their specific business needs. This program includes an interactive web portal for easy access to value-added information, training sessions and customer support. In addition, Seagate enhanced the customer support network reach to areas where there may be no SeaCareCenters (Seagate’s official customer service centers) by collaborating with its Seagate Partner Program members. Similarly, the establishment of the Seagate Regional Customer Councils (RCCs) is an important pioneering initiative from Seagate to gain direct partner analysis and input to ensure the effectiveness of Seagate’s programs in India. The RCCs comprise enterprise partners, system integrators, retail partners and sub-distributors invited from all regions of India.

F-SECURE ASSERTS MARKET STRATEGY Despite its late entry Finnish anti-virus company F-Secure is bullish on the India market BY: KARMA NEGI

T

hough a late entrant in the crowded security market Finnish anti-virus company F-Secure has been operating in India for the last seven years with focus on telecom operator business line; and it was only last year that it ventured into corporate segment and channels. Since then it has been aggressively building its market and this year too is proactively working around partner expansion and enablement, adding more resources, pushing validated leads to partners. “We have been present in India since 2007, but our focus was mainly on our telecom operator business line. But for more than a year we have ventured into corporate segment and channels and now have sizable partners working in the country; and are adding new customers and partners across different territories,” says Nishant Sharma, National Head (Channels - India and SAARC), F-Secure. Last year, he informs, they brought in channels and customers; and are still expanding business across country, and hopes this year should be better than the last one. “In terms of channel

Later this year it plans to come out with a new product line which he says will take F-Secure to a ‘different league’ in security. With a team of 18 people F-Secure is present

in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and has inside sales team in Delhi and a separate team which handles govt line of business, and every location is supported by pre sales. Today F-Secure’s product portfolio includes: security-as-a-service (SaaS), endpoint security, data center security, and email security. To increase the adoption of SaaS F-Secure is talking to CIOs and CFOs to help them understand why it makes sense to move from Capex to Opexbased security and has been pushing this security portfolio with some of the managed service providers. While their offering is mainly attractive to the SMBs, enterprises too have started showing interest says Sharma. “SaaS is more attractive for SMBs as organisations are still worried on why they should move to the cloud but now even large enterprises too have started eliciting interest.” F-Secure’s data center security - physical/ virtual or Linux based - too has been getting decent amount of traction in the market informs Sharma. With 60 plus active partners F-Secure wants to increase this to 120 by the end of this financial year (which ends in Dec); and for its 200 plus partners in the country it plans to increase the number to more than 400 by this year end. In the month of February it released its partner program in the country which saw participation from more than 50 plus partners. Today, it has five Gold partners and plans to upgrade couple of partners to Platinum by the end of this year. It’s also chalking out aggressive plans for increasing its footprint in tier 2 -3 cities as well, and has not only started hiring more resources but are also leveraging on its distributors to penetrate deeper into these cities. “We are doing various programs for the channel; and for the new products we will be conducting multi-city tour under which we will be covering four major cities for this launch. Our distributor RAH Infotech will help us in driving this business into tier 2 and 3 cities, and in some other cities we will put in our own resources,” answers Sharma.

With a headcount of 18 people the company is headquartered in Delhi, and recently it also inaugurated its support center in Chandigarh which will become operation from August 1 with four to five people. In addition, substantial investment is also being funnelled into creating a vibrant channel community. Come next year the government sector will be a major focus area for the company. Hickman says, “It takes longer to crack into the government business hence we will move into that space next year as a major focus area.” Winmagic’s customers in India number around 60 which cover both large and mid-market enterprises. With 35 active channel partners across the three regions (Delhi NCR, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune), Winmagic is on an expansion mode and are adding in more partners and hopes to witness 100% growth (in partners) by march next year. In the next six months Winmagic hopes to roll out its cloud services offerings in the country. In Japan it has a tie-up with NEC for its managed service offerings for the last three years; and is looking at something on similar lines for India. “We have managed services in North America around insurance and are looking at similar kind of model for Europe and India as well. For this we are on the lookout for right kind of partners and hope something concrete will happen in the next six months.” The next product area he is looking at is application encryption. As it’s a complex and difficult area, Hickman says they will prefer tie-ups with people who are into this segment, which will take another 18-24 months. In October the market will see the launch of Winmagic Cloud File; and Cloud storage on Amazon and Azure next year.

businesses in India by providing world-class products and support services, thereby helping them grow and achieve business success. How do you plan to overcome these? Many small business owners in India perceive the

Internet to be too complex or are concerned that building a website is a massive financial investment in itself. They also may not realize the benefits of having a website on the Internet. GoDaddy is working to educate consumers and business owners about how easy and affordable it really is to build an online identity. With our latest offer - ‘Get Online Today’, a small business owner can establish a presence for their business on the Internet. By featuring GoDaddy products and services designed to help small businesses create and manage their business online at attractive prices, we hope that small business owners in India will decide to get started.

To help make the process easier, GoDaddy provides support and guidance to customers at every stage—this is intrinsic to our global and India strategy. We offer our award-winning, 24/7 local customer care where any customer can call our care center and an expert will be available to walk them through the process of creating a website step-by-step. What are some of the tech trends in the digital space that will define the way future digital frontier is shaped? As a recent eMarketer report suggests, India will see double-digit growth till 2018 in its Internet population – higher than any other country in the Asia Pacific. As more small business owners recognize the opportunities available when having a presence online with a website, we believe domain name penetration relative to the Internet population is also set to grow. Currently, for India, it stands at just about two percent, in comparison to a more mature market like the U.S. where domain name penetration is upwards of 20 percent.

SHAILENDRA TRIVEDI, DIRECTOR (OPERATIONS AND CHANNEL DEVELOPMENT), R&M

“WILL LOOK TO GROW ACROSS ALL SEGMENTS...” In 2014 the structured cabling market in India witnessed a growth trajectory though at a slower rate. In a chat with SME Channels Shailendra Trivedi, Director (Operations and Channel Development), R&M talks about their strategy for 2015.

How has been the performance of the Structured Cabling market in India? What is the size of the market? The perception that global recession has had its effects on the best of economies is true. India has not been insulated from its effect, but it’s predominantly been a slow down. This can be seen in the way the markets have performed and the cautious steps that had been taken by investors too. From the industry standpoint, we saw many expansion plans that were stalled and recruitments frozen. Considering the dependency on customers for business, the structured cabling market was also slow. Today, the market has recovered and is moving towards positive growth. We witnessed this positivity as companies previously hit by recession have now moved into expansion mode with hiring of new staff, and infrastructure. Through these companies we foresee larger volumes of business transactions and with it higher data, and voice transmission requirements emerging. As positivity returns to the market what will be your roadmap for FY15-16? R&M was successful across a majority of the verticals last year, and we look forward to achieving the same in the coming year. R&M products and solutions have been used in a myriad of sectors like IT/ITES, Manufacturing, BFSI, Healthcare,

34 SME CHANNELS JULY 2015

Education, Automotive, Telecom, etc. to name a few. Hence we look forward to providing industry specific solutions and build a stronger brand presence across the country. As always we will look to grow across all segments of our business capabilities. We have a competitive portfolio of solutions that benefit all the segments. We have become more competitive with our product portfolio after acquiring a company last year. This not only increases our employee strength but also makes us better equipped to handle any requirement. Telecom is a rapidly growing market and we look to be an active part of that growth. R&M has invested time and money into innovation every year. We have seen positives through our unique differentiation in product design and we believe we will continue to see this in the future too. For achieving this what will be your GTM? Our go-to-market strategy will be two-fold: Go to Customer – We look to establish the positioning of our products with the customer to better understand the value proposition that R&M offers. We strongly highlight our attention to product design, our compliance with industry standards and the quality of our products and solutions. Go to Partners – We value our partners and their efforts. We ensure our support through

conducting various technical and installation training programs. Our dedicated technical support to them helps to carry out complex projects with ease and to the highest level of customer satisfaction What are the latest technology trends in structure cabling? Structured cabling has seen more implementations of Automated Infrastructure Management systems. This enables organizations to monitor their network and control it in case of any errors, hence reducing downtime drastically. We can see developments in new Cat.7 and Cat.8 technologies being taken forward by companies to help better data transmission but that’s something for the future at the moment. In the year 2014 the structured cabling market in India was on a growth trajectory but at slower pace. Copper still has a long inning to play in structured cabling. Fiber is showing a surge in OM3 as it is a good option in data centers based on the current standards. With newer technologies in Fiber coming in we will see a larger use of fiber for various projects. We can see the use of pre-terminated solutions for ease of implementation at various verticals. In all this what role will your channel partners play? R&M’s road shows benefit our partners because it shows our support in their region and we are

trying to build a stronger awareness in their region to make them more competitive. R&M believes in long term successful relationships, hence our partners can expect the utmost support from us. We look to build brand awareness through road shows across the country. We have already mapped out multiple cities to cover in 2015. We expect to conduct roadshows in at least one city per month. Brief us about your QPP training program The R&M Qualified Partner Program (QPP) covers training, certification and long-term support for all R&M partners who sell R&M cabling systems. With QPP, R&M ensures top-notch training and installation worldwide. In our 3-level warranty program, we guarantee the proper functioning of the R&M cabling system and the transmission of all ratified network services. The warranty is extended through certified partners who are trained under the Qualified Partner Program (QPP). SMBs need proper guidance because they have fewer resources and experience to appropriately design and manage their IT infrastructure

While server virtualization has been available as a tool for companies to consolidate their IT footprint for many years, there has not been widespread adoption of the technology until the last few. However, many smaller companies are finding it difficult to know where to start when it comes to properly designing, maintaining and optimizing their IT infrastructures when they adopt it. There is an abundance of information on how to achieve these goals for larger data centers, but very little guidance for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Proper guidance is even more critical for SMBs because they have fewer resources and experience to appropriately design and manage their IT infrastructure. Furthermore, an SMB’s IT infrastructure is not only their connection to data in the cloud, but also a critical part of business continuity and success. Listed below are some of the common issues SMBs face as they strive to achieve energy efficiency and maximize operations in their wiring closets and server rooms, as well as suggest solutions and best practices for helping overcome these challenges. Challenge 1: Protecting and organizing consolidated, virtualized servers and networking gear SMBs that have virtualized part or all of their servers and processes have taken a key step to making their IT infrastructure more efficient, but post-virtualized physical equipment, while there is less of it, is even more critical than ever before and in need of protection. Furthermore, organizing IT equipment in one place can lead to complications with availability.

Solution: SMBs can ensure critical servers operate in the right environmental conditions via rack enclosures properly designed for servers and networking environments. This type of enclosure features capabilities including cable management and power distribution, enabling better organization, mitigating human error when troubleshooting, and helping to isolate hot and cold air streams. SMBs should also maintain availability of on-site equipment by protecting it from power outages, physical, environmental and security threats with Power Distribution Units (PDU) and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Some types of PDUs enable customizable power control and active monitoring to restrict unauthorized use of individual outlets and avoid circuit overload. UPS systems provide runtime when utility power fails, keeping critical computing and connection equipment operational. Challenge 2: Safely shutting down virtual servers Virtual environments are becoming easier to implement and manage, but they still rely on critical power and cooling support from IT infrastructure that can be susce ptible to power outages. Solution: Ideally, any IT installation will use either a generator or extended battery packs with the UPSs to maximize run time to ride through a prolonged blackout. However, if neither solution is available, safe shutdown software and preconfigured equipment, such as UPS or PDU systems can be extremely useful in protecting servers, applications, and data from corruption. Look for solutions with remote management capabilities and proactive notifications and warnings on power issues,

outages, and battery life. Challenge 3: Deploying IT and networking equipment outside of a dedicated IT space Non-dedicated IT spaces, which many SMBs use for their IT equipment, can suffer from a lack of available space for new IT deployments. Solution: Utilizing enclosures designed specifically for deploying equipment in nondedicated spaces can provide the same power, cooling and protection capabilities you would receive in a dedicated IT space. Fan-ventilated, sound-proofed enclosures with UPS systems and cable management provide critical power backup and remote monitoring capabilities while also ensuring a near and organized deployment that is easy to install and manage. Challenge 4: Minimizing the use of floor space Securing equipment can be difficult when there is a lack of floor space, a challenge faced by many SMBs. Solution: Wall-mounted solutions are ideal for IT environments where floor space is unavailable. Look for solutions that are designed to easily accommodate all types of equipment and arrive with reversible mounting rails, allowing for multiple mounting options. Enclosures that

pivot off the wall provide easier equipment access for maintenance and installation. Ideally, a rack height of 13U will leave just enough space for the distributed equipment that keeps a building connected. Challenge 5: Making the most of your space: installing IT equipment into tight spaces and expanding server room capacity Smaller racks limit the amount and availability of equipment that can be installed in the network closet, while large equipment is cumbersome and inappropriate for tight corners and small closets, which are commonly found in SMB IT spaces. Solution: Utilize flexible solutions that allow for quick scalability and are low in cost to help make the best use of space, no matter the shape or square footage. Slim, two-post racks and monitoring equipment allow for optimal organization, eliminating the need to enter the cramped IT space. Vertical cable managers can also maintain organized cables to simplify cable routing and installation. Remote monitoring software provides a centralized view into the utilization of current equipment for capacity planning as well as optimization purposes. Challenge 6: Optimizing space in a consolidated server room Consolidating equipment without redesigning

or changing the IT space can increase unnecessary costs for power and cooling. Solution: Deploying easily-scalable server room architecture takes advantage of spaces already containing cooling capabilities. A simple, repeatable architecture for installations in 3 kVA increments can provide rack-level UPS power protection and enough outlets to accommodate a mix of servers and networking equipment. Challenge 7: Controlling costs with small server rooms and network closets Ensuring protection, appropriate cooling and availability of IT equipment can be expensive, especially for SMBs without a major budget to allot to network closets. Solution: Low cost Rack solutions can manage equipment to allow for optimal cooling, and are easy to install. A four-post open frame rack can be a simple way to keep equipment organized and off the floor. By following this practical, easy-to-understand guide, SMBs facing challenges associated with deploying IT equipment in smaller spaces can realize improved efficiency, streamlined operations and increased equipment protection. In addition, reducing the risk of downtime will further lead to more profitable business and a better customer experience.
