Worldwide PC Shipments Declined 3.6 % Q3’ 2017 Worldwide PC shipments totaled 67 million units in the third quarter of 2017, a 3.6 percent decline from the third quarter of 2016, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. This is the 12th consecutive quarter of declining PC shipments. “While there were signs of

stabilization in the PC industry in key regions, including EMEA, Japan and Latin America, the relatively stable results were offset by the U.S. market, which saw a 10 percent year-over-year decline in part because of a very weak back-to-school sales season,” said

Mika Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “Business PC demand, led by Windows 10 upgrades, continued to drive PC shipments across all regions, but its refresh schedule varies by region. The countries with stable economies, such as the U.S., have created a positive sentiment

among businesses, especially for small and midsized businesses (SMBs), which are more vulnerable to external events, such as economic or political.” There are ongoing component shortages, with DRAM shortages getting particularly worse during the third quarter of the year compared with the first half of 2017. “The component price hike impacted the consumer PC market as most vendors generally pass the price hike on to consumers, rather than absorbing the cost themselves,” Ms. Kitagawa said. “We expect the DRAM shortage to continue to the end of 2018, but it will not be reflected in the final PC prices immediately.” In the third quarter of 2017, HP Inc. and Lenovo were in a virtual tie for the top spot in the PC market based on shipments (see Table 1). However, HP Inc. is in an upward trend, as it has experienced five consecutive quarter of global PC growth, while Lenovo is in a downward trend with declining shipments in eight of the last 10 quarters. HP Inc. experienced growth in all key regions.

CyberArk and Puppet to Automate DevOps Protection

HPE Displaced Dell to be Storage market leader: IDC

FireEye Claims stopping spear phishing emails

CyberArk, the leading player in Privileged Account Security, entered into a partnership with Puppet, an Advanced Technology Partner. Together, CyberArk and Puppet are working together to create supported modules that provide automated, enterprise-grade protection of secrets and are seamlessly integrated with Puppet’s configuration automation, enabling secure, high-velocity DevOps workflows. In dynamic DevOps environments, tools, scripts and applications/services are constantly being created, used and disabled. Each step requires secrets, including SSH/API keys, passwords and certificates, which regularly go unchanged or revoked, or may not be available for a range of reasons, making the application unable to run or run properly. Because these accounts provide access to sensitive resources, they are a prime target for an external attacker or malicious insider to facilitate enterprise-wide cyber attacks. CyberArk Conjur is the only platform-independent secrets management solution that allows organizations to integrate secrets management and machine identity security into their projects with minimal effort.

MORE THAN BILLION HOUSEHOLDS TO HAVE WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY BY 2030: HUAWEI At ITU Telecom World 2017, Huawei released ”4G Wireless Broadband Industry” White Paper, giving an in-depth analysis on this topic. As per the white paper, more than 1 billion households globally will be connected through wireless technologies. The total number of wireless broadband users has exceeded 50 million globally with 100% YoY growth rate since 2015. The collaboration of fixed and wireless technologies also contributes to achieve the strategic goals in ITU Connect 2020. The white paper affirms the great achievement in increasing the household broadband penetration in recent years under the guidance of ITU, but there are some difficulties to overcome, such as lack of infrastructure, higher cost, longer ROI (Return of Investment) in rural areas. In urban areas, it is also hard to further increase broadband penetration due to the constraints of civil works, or because the cost of fixed broadband is unaffordable for low-income group of people.

atrix is a pioneer in providing corporate grade solutions. The product portfolio includes PBX variants having user capacity as low as six users and Unified Communication Servers for as high as 3,000 users. The prompt pre-sales and post-sales support has helped Matrix earn prestige in the global market. With a global workforce being hired for corporates, human resource department faces a tough task of establishing coordination between remote workers and desk employees. Scrutinizing the recruiting process and conducting interactive training sessions is also a challenge faced and felt. Implementation of Unified Communication technology has proved to be a way out. Following is how implementation of UC technologies has helped HR personnel handle and conclude their tasks efficiently: Streamline Recruiting Process: The main goal of any HR personnel is to recruit a suitable talent for the vacancy at the firm. The UC technology extends enough flexibility to conduct recruiting despite geographical limitations. The ability of assessing the qualities of employees can be

boosted with features such as Video Calling or Audio Conferencing. It is a boon for HR executive working at the head office who is assigned the responsibility of hiring for the branch offices. Retain Existing Employees: Bringing on-field workers with office employees under common communication network, offering the facility of work from home and flexible working hours are the newest challenges that modern working methods has in store for HR professionals. UC platform enables HR professionals to create an amicable environment by creating flexible working hour policies and keeping a track of productivity hours with the help of Presence Sharing feature. Furthermore, UC technology lays first block for creating BYOD environment allowing mobile or remote workforce to access the professional tools from their personal devices. Optimization of Existing Processes: Juggling between communication platforms while working causes employees to waste time, which ultimately takes toll on their efficiency. UC technology consolidates multiple interfaces, and hence, helps the employees manage multiple tasks effectively. Create Common Communication Platform: When employees are working at distant locations, bringing them on the same communication platform becomes difficult. Deployment of UC technology empower employees with features like Instant Messaging, Presence Sharing, Audio Conference, Video Calling and Chat enabling continuous flow of information regardless of their location.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT IN HR It is no wonder than that most HR managers and heads do relay on modern CRM techniques to engage, supervise and reward their employees. This approach, also known as ‘Employee Resource Management’ or ERM, is an essential business process to bridge the divide between employees and organization

That Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is an integral part of all modern businesses is a fairly established fact. Apart from effective product and quality feedback mechanisms and enhancing brand value, CRM also serves a prominent role in the marketing strategy, product development and market research functions, offering vital information into the minds and behavior of the modern day consumers. However, there is another set of equally important stakeholders, the employees, who not only heavily influence the success of the brand, but also play an integral part in creating it. It is thus a decisive responsibility of an organization to ensure their biggest asset, its employees, is well taken care of. Just like the external consumer, an employee to demands care and attention in managing their needs and demands, so as to ensure an efficient and productive work force, which eventually reflects on the end product. It is no wonder than that most HR managers and heads do relay on modern CRM techniques to engage, supervise and reward their employees. This approach, also known as ‘Employee Resource Management’ or ERM, is an essential business process to bridge the divide between employees and organiza-

tion, while ensuring a harmonious, productive and satisfying relationship for both parties.

Advantages of ERM: A well-integrated ERM is one that capture, updates and manages a seamless record of information on all aspects of an employee, thus enabling HR heads and managers to create a better interface to engage with employees. Transparency, timely and accurate communication and trust building are some of the crucial roles taken up by ERM, including: l Profile Management- Creating and managing an up to date profile of every single employee in the organization, is one of the most basic but significant task that the ERM is entrusted with. The log also allows employees to edit their information from time to time, so at to ensure it is accurate. The nature of information stored here is both personal – like date of birth, address, educational qualification etc., to professional, like designation, reporting authority, days of work and leave etc. l Payment/Compensation- Maintaining an accurate log of employee payroll and relative rewards/ compensations etc. is another vital role, entrusted to the seamless Business Process of ERM.

It also gen-

erates acceptance/ rejection of leave application, basis inputs from the immediate manager, thus making the process automated, transparent and friendly, by empowering the staff and HR with accurate information. l Meetings and Certifications- Managers and employees can have access to records of upcoming training sessions or schedules of internal meetings/ conferences. W

ith a rapid surge in demand for surveillance solutions in India, thanks to a booming number of SMBs, commercial complexes as well as residential societies, the country’s surveillance industry is witnessing the emergence of new technologies and integrated solutions to offer a 360 degree protection to consumers. The increasing number of reports pertaining to theft, bank robbery and other crimes have also

elevated the public to move towards software based solutions to add a layer of caution to assure personal, public and property safety. The Make in India push by the centre is also stirring new trends and demands in the segment with vendors focussing on offering highly customised solutions in the market. To garner a deeper understanding of the current state of this industry, SME channels spoke to some of the leading vendors in India’s surveillance industry to analyse the latest trends, technologies, challenges

as well as opportunities of partners in this promising vertical.

‘’VIDEO ANALYTICS IS POISED FOR MAXIMUM GROWTH IN THE SURVEILLANCE SECTOR. ANALYTICS COUPLED WITH IOT WILL OFFER A HOST OF SOLUTIONS TO EXISTING CHALLENGES FACED.” SANJAY SEHGAL, VP – SMB BUSINESS, TP-LINK INDIA PVT LTD.

‘’Video analytics is poised for maximum growth in the surveillance sector. Analytics coupled along with IoT will offer a host of solutions to existing challenges faced. As adoption of IP based video solutions is now not limited only to large enterprises and is being deployed on wide scale basis in retail, hospitality, education, residential complex, etc, they market opportunity is large for channel partners in India,’’ said Sanjay Sehgal, VP – SMB Business, TP-Link India Pvt Ltd. Speaking in a similar tone, Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Axis Communications informs,’’Digital technology offers the opportunity to provide customized solutions which can easily be integrated with, for example, people counters, checkout systems and entry systems. Surveillance equipment can be used for value added services such as footfall measurement in retail outlets. ‘’ ‘’Surveillance systems are also becoming a part

of intelligent building systems – open standard surveillance products can be integrated with building management systems (BMS); fire and access control and can give better benefits than standalone discrete systems. Such integrated systems help in faster recovery of the cost of the installations and lowering the total cost of ownership,’’ added Holla. Also moving from simple based security frameworks to IP based observation, buyers are expecting exceedingly refined arrangements rather than ease security techniques. Warm imaging, low-light receptor, propelled sensors and facial recognizable proof are a portion of alternate areas coming into focus over the most recent couple of years, especially in India.

Drones Are The Future of Surveillance With drones now being utilized by almost every

surveillance agency across the globe, the vendors in the industry also agree undisputedly that drones are not just here to stay but will shape the future of the global surveillance industry. ‘’Drones are being deployed as an essential tool in surveillance technologies. It is important to note that Surveillance is not shortcut to security, it is rather the right hand to security. Drones are capable highly advanced surveillance, and drones already in use by law enforcement can carry various types of equipment including live-feed video cameras, infrared cameras, heat sensors, and radar,’’ says Vijay Wadhwan, associate directorSecurity and Surveillance division, Panasonic India. ‘’Drones have made it easy to scan entire cities, or alternatively, zoom in and can allow biologists to survey the area just to find out whether it’s worth investing the time and effort to organize an expedition,’’ added Wadhawan. While in most developed countries across the globe, drones are already being utilized effectively in the form of aerial live-feed video cameras, the infrared cameras, heat sensors and radar. India is also coming in the picture with the US-India deal of 22 such predator drones, which took place in June this year. In India, surveillance is becoming demanding sector similar to hospitality, retail, BPO, manufacturing and education. The horizon has expanded from keeping security cameras in public places, institution to now residential. With the everincreasing purchasing power of world’s second largest populated country, people have realized that surveillance is no longer just an option but an essential in a hindsight. Some of the important trends shaping up

the surveillance industry as per experts include vehicle tracking, connected cars, home automation and mobile-based apps to track crime are few emerging aspects that we can easily see in a household today in India, mixing the use of technology to ensure safety. ‘’According to an IHS report India’s market for network video cameras is estimated to reach USD 194.7 million by 2020. Although there is a majority market share of analog systems, this is poised for a change in the coming years with a rapid paradigm shift to IP adoption. The next decade will see proliferation of IP based video surveillance systems which will replace analog systems,’’ says Holla. He further adds,’’ The verticals with the highest market share in terms of revenue are government & transportation, commercial offices and banking & financial followed by the upcoming sectors such as retail, residential, and industrial.’’

Major Challenges Prevailing In The Sector Amongst other challenges faced by surveillance industry in India, consistent availability of power comes as a key challenge upfront the sector. ‘’As the deployments are not limited with four walls, as in case of a campus or stadium or farm fields, the availability of power source at remote locations does pose a challenge in India. One way to overcome this at value for money proposition is to use Power over Ethernet devices. Additionally, to connect cameras spread over long distances, for ex- 2km or more, cost effective solution is obtained by use of Outdoor wireless CPE,’’ says Sehgal. Panasonic on other hand highlights a series of

other challenges ranging from delay in approvals to weather conditions which obstruct the smooth functioning of the industry ‘’Initially government funded surveillance projects were long drawn, owing the complex web of formalities and sanctions involved. However, with the emergence of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, these challenges have gradually faded away. There still exist deployment challenges which include cumbersome procedures, delay in timely approvals, geographical and extreme weather conditions, tough terrains and skilled manpower in remote locations,’’ says Wadhawan. Adding to the list of challenges, Sudhindra Holla states that lack of awareness among consumers regarding new cutting edge technologies in the segment,’’ The biggest challenge is changing the mindset of the citizens. Low quality CCTV cameras are not capable of detecting faces and license plates- the main requirement for law enforcement in their investigation. It is critical to raise this issue and generate awareness about the benefits of using high resolution cameras and software.’’

Opportunities for Partners While in the past, video surveillance was synonymous with security applications, the advent of digital technology is opening the door to new business opportunities and markets. ‘’Digital technology offers the opportunity to provide customized solutions which can easily be integrated with, retail analytics – foot traffic counting, age and gender detection and queue monitoring, others like - checkout and entry systems. We are streamlining our efforts to focus on key markets where surveillance is a priority. Apart from city surveillance, commercial and manufac-

Sanjay Wadhawan on the other hand is of the opinion that integrated solutions are fueling the growth of new opportunities for partners industry’s stakeholders ‘’We have started realizing that customers today know more than they knew a few years ago, simply because they have it all in their hands in the form of smartphones. So assembling all the sub-systems to provide a tailor-made one stop solution to customers is the new demand to the industry and thus, the convergence is bound to happen,’’ says Wadhawan. Big Data is also the next big thing in CCTV cameras and solutions, as it helps in effectively manage and use the endless amounts of video data being generated. With supporting technologies such as big data, ICT, cloud and machine learning will enable us to create end-to-end solutions that were previously unthinkable to deploy,’’ added Holla.

When it comes to India, Barco is quite cognizant about the potential and therefore trying to create unique value proposition so that not only it works in India and for India but also add value to its global operations also. “We are involved in very large projects. For example, in UP one of the large projects that we are present is UP100. UP

BAR corporation’s large control room is on Barco. The Mumbai city surveillance is also using our video wall where we have an installation of 140 panel video wall, where all the feeds from cameras are coming to the central command center. All these businesses I am referring to have been growing leaps and bounds after the 26/11 2008 Mumbai attack. We have got video wall for Gas Authority. We also have video wall at F1, Airports, etc. Airtel NOC also uses our video wall. All the metro railways use our video wall,” said, Rajiv Bhalla, Managing Director, Barco Electronic Systems Pvt. Ltd. “Today Barco has 550 people and growing. We are contributing through center of excellence to manufacturing, R&D and Software centre. How would you tap this site capability to address the India opportunity. One of the strategies is to how to come out with products in India for India.” With digital India and make in India happening based on the infrastructure focus, there is an expected growth in the control rooms and growth in cinemas. There is also an opportunity of high growth in the eHealth. All these putting

together can offer a huge opportunity for Barco. Last year Barco grew at 34% in India, this year till H1, the company has grown 50%+. One of the big reasons as a site manager, Rajiv’s role is to drive more synergy with the country. Since Barco India is involved in R&D, software product localization and manufacturing, Rajiv is placed in an advantageous position. The other thing what the company has done is that it has brought in new energy into its sales organization by working with the right set of partners. When Barco is dependent upon the partner ecosystem, its direct business is also growing faster. For example, its entertainment business is growing through its large value-added distributor called Qube, which was earlier called Real Image Technologies. The company also works with direct customers like Cinepolis and Inox. However, its ClickShare business is all managed through distributors and dealers. Similarly, in the control room business, Barco works with large SIs including Honeywell, L&T, etc. and knowledge partners like KPMG and E&Y, etc.

Rajiv Bhalla, Managing Director, Barco Electronic Systems Pvt. Ltd.

“Last year the Barco grew at 34% in India, this year in H1, we have grown 50%+.”

Indian government has launched an ambitious smart city project to develop over 100 smart cities. This initiative generates great potentials to commercially benefited. Bollywood and cricket are two other things immensely popular in India. The market for entertainment solution is also booming. However, there are only eight screens per million people in India while the screen density in united states is 120 per million. This means there is ample chance for Barco to enlarge its footprint. Last but not the least the healthcare industry is growing immensely. As the ratio of imported medical equipment are slated to come down, big enterprises like GE, Philips and Siemens are slated to exploit the opportunity of make in India initiative to tap big healthcare projects. Collaborating with these companies, Barco would strengthen its foothold in the healthcare market. To take these opportunities, we should reinforce our organizational strength in India by implementing our ‘in country for country strategy’. Our products, are popular in Europe and US markets and well accepted in the top-end pyramid of the market. But to compete in the broader market and be successful, we believe localization is key and bringing India specific offerings in terms of value addition and price points is also key. We must leverage on local manufacturing, designing, development and pricing. We will build local R&D and product capabilities, which can address India specific opportunity. That also means we must invest in local talents, who can be empowered to excel in Barcode global. If this continues longer, we will be able to grow and create more value for our customers in India.”

At Barco India facility, the large video screen projectors are manufactured. These projection range has five different models covering LED to laser technologies. Rajiv maintains, “We take great pride in our technological superiority and quality. That is why if you look at the global scenario, there might be many players but Barco is considered for quality and delivery.” Quality never comes cheap therefore Barco products used to be high priced earlier. However, the company has found ways and means to bring down the cost without compromising the quality.

Today, Barco is growing in each of its focused verticals including entertainment, enterprise and healthcare business. However, in the entertainment and particularly in the control room business, the company is growing faster than the other verticals. Rajiv added, “The control room business is primarily growing because each of the cities today wants an emergency response mechanism. Each of them are going for city surveillance. They want a disaster management, traffic and surveillance management and these need control rooms. In metro projects, each metro needs control room

to look at the train movement. Tomorrow smart grids might happen, you need to have monitoring rooms too. Today governments’ focus on infra spending augers well for companies like us because all of these integrated into a control room.” Rajiv adds, “We have roughly 40% share in the control rooms market but we are the best company as far as quality products are concerned.” “Today people often overlook the power consumption aspect of the products. We are substantively lower in terms of our products than the competition. In terms of consistency in the performance, we are far superior than our competition. So, when you look at the overall cost of ownership and life of products, our products are far ahead. However, in order to address the price game in the market, we have come up with in country for country strategy.”

Finally… So far Barco journey has been good and for next three years, the company expects to succeed in line with its planning. The challenge what Barco has is actually not with the competition but with itself in terms of reaching out to the customers and create value them. At the same time engaging partners and building trust. That is where Rajiv is commitment to at the moment.

UPKAR SINGH, DIRECTOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, FIS

“ORGANIZATION MUST DEVELOP AN EXCLUSIVE EXECUTIVE PROTECTION PLAN TO PROTECT SENIOR EXECUTIVES FROM CYBER THREATS.”

T

he senior or C-level executive protection forms a key component of an organization’s overall risk management strategy. Executive protection has developed as a mature professional service; however, at present its scope is limited to physical protection. Web revolution has transformed the way an organization works, giving rise to a wide range of cyber threats. Hence, the current vision of the executive protection plan needs to evolve to include protection from cyber threats. The senior or C-level executives of organizations operating in critical sectors like energy,

nano-computing, oil and gas, next-gen mobile technology, public service departments, banking, and defense are easy targets of cyber threats as their log-in credentials provide immediate access to critical data. As a senior executive, you should be extra vigilant while travelling to adversary countries, which may wire your hotel room or bribe the cab or hotel room service provider to get access to any information possible. The Wi-Fi network of a hotel can also be compromised to get access to your internet session. Thus, an executive protection plan must include defense against cyber espionage activities. Senior executives must

Every organization has an information security policy to ensure that the IT infrastructure is updated with the latest antivirus, firewalls and other critical security controls. However, the security policy might not cover executive protection. Therefore, the organization must develop an exclusive executive protection plan to protect senior executives from cyber threats. Huge multinational companies with several chief executive officers, vice presidents, and directors, especially require executive protection plans, imbibing cyber security. To start with, an organization could implement the following measures as part of its executive protection plan: l Do not allow senior executives to carry work laptops when they are travelling. l Provide a second laptop to the executive that never connects to the home-office network (company network). This laptop should preferably carry as less work files and applications as possible. l Avoid carrying highly vulnerable and targeted applications on such laptops, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is being targeted by several hackers. Instead, use an alternative PDF reader. l The executive should try and avoid keeping crucial information on the travel laptop. Important files, presentations, and critical information should be stored on encrypted flash drives which should be carried at all times by the executive. l Conduct a forensic analysis of the travel laptop once the executive is back. Given the range of risks involved, a chief information security officer managing an executive protection plan must know that protecting an individual is different from securing a facility. A proper risk assessment exercise would help create a profound executive protection plan, involving cyber security.

MATRIX

MATRIX AADHAAR ENABLED BIOMETRIC ATTENDANCE SOLUTION AEBAS IS AN ATTENDANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DESIGNED for government organizations by Government of India to improve the productivity of employees. The system authenticates attendance using AADHAAR number created by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). With the wave of mandate in attendance marking through AADHAAR authentication among Government organizations, the most common issue of re-typing AADHAAR number on the device while marking attendance has come up. This process leads to errors and delays in attendance marking. To combat this issue, Matrix offers the first embedded Linux based AADHAAR enabled biometric attendance device registered on AEBAS Server – COSEC VEGA FAXQ. The user has to show his/her smart card having AADHAAR number stored in it, instead of typing the same on the device, followed by showing the fingerprint. It authenticates the user in less than 1.5 sec. This avoids the probability of error occurrences, and lead to convenient and quick attendance marking on daily basis. n Price: On request, Contact: Head Office: 394-GIDC, Makarpura, Vadodara-390010, India, Ph.: +91 265 2630555, E-Mail: More@ MatrixComSec.com, Website: www.MatrixAccessControl.com
