ROARING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON KARMA NEGI

karma@smechannels.com

THE DRAGON HAS LOST ITS FIRE. The recent Chinese stock market debacle sent the global market in a tizzy and left the investors jittery. The ‘Black Friday’ wiped out China’s stock market gains for the year and its move to devalue its currency further sent the global stock markets spiralling down. Following this the currencies of emerging Asian markets like India weakened, compelling RBI to allow further rupee depreciation from 64 to 66+ to make India exports competitive to China and other countries. Some sections in the market have already started to pit India against China, as far as saying that this situation provides India with the opportune time to fill-in the place left vacant by the world’s second largest economy. In an interview with BBC Finance Minister Arun Jaitley very confidently announced how India was poised to take over China. As per a report by International Monetary Fund (IMF) India will be the fastest growing major economy in 2016, with projected GDP growth of 6.5 percent against China’s 6.3 percent. Adding to this positive outlook is the report by analytics firm IHS, projecting India to become the fastest growing BRICS economy, with GDP growth forecast to be 7.6 percent in 2015 and 8.1 percent in 2016. Even though India’s growth rate in the second quarter has fallen from 7 percent from 7.5 in the earlier quarter, there might be some truth in these reports as Brazil and Russia are going through tough times, thus it leaves India to take the lead at least among the BRICS countries. Meanwhile, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan opines that it will take a long time before India can take over China even if it grows at a faster rate. According to a report in Global Times “Although the Chinese economy does not compete directly with the Indian one, the effect the former imposes on the global economy is likely to influence the Indian economy. In this regard, whether a slowing Chinese economy will really create more opportunities for the Indian economy needs rethinking”.

SANDIPAN RAY, DIRECTOR & CO-FOUNDER, SMBCONNECT

“WE ARE KEEN TO BUILD SME TO SME CONTACT ACROSS DIFFERENT COUNTRIES” SMBConnect is a one-stop-platform where businesses can find solutions pertaining to business management. In a chat with SME Channels Sandipan Ray, Director & Co-Founder, SMBConnect talks about how this platform helps the SMEs.

Tell us something about SMB connect. What are its objectives? SMBConnect is a one-stop-platform where businesses can find solutions pertaining to business management. From big brands to renowned industrialists, an entrepreneur receives mentoring, advices, suggestions from experts in diverse field. You can connect with service providers and consultants who take care of your needs as specific as acquiring intellectual property rights and trademarks. You will find resources ranging from identifying the right digital marketing expert to a financial consultant who can guide your business from family owned to professionally driven. This is a knowledge led platform for anyone who aspires to make his/her business reach global heights and needs an expert who can support him in this journey. We intend to be the choice to partner them. How are SMBs benefiting from this initiative? When you meet like-minded people who own businesses locally, you are sure to come across

someone who has succeeded and you can learn a thing or two from them. Not only are those, SMBConnect events a great platform to share experience with peers. There are a lot of policies and opportunities that are being created for SMEs by both state government and central government. SMBConnect experts help businesses decipher them. Let me give you some examples from our own last year series. We had an attendee in our Vadodara meet who wanted to set up his business in US and another in Jamshedpur who wanted to set up a sales office in Ahmedabad. Mentors from our panel supported them both and today they are moving in that direction. What are the main hiccups that SMBs face in the country and how do you help them in overcoming them? The SME industry is a very diverse one, with each business facing hardships relating to its own line of work. However, problems that small and medium businesses face commonly are many. Like lack of technological awareness, sketchy idea of logistics,

not being able to retain skilled workers, companies that have been around long enough but don’t have the necessary know-how of how to expand their business across the country. Some lack funds for marketing; others may altogether think marketing is an unnecessary expenditure! SMBConnect throws light on many such issues and informs people about various aspects of business. The family businesses that have just gone to the hands of the younger generation will get their share of exposure from a platform like this and a scope for sharing their thoughts and consulting the experts. A vibrant merger and acquisition market in the SME sector along with availability of venture/angle investment providing equity will lead to further development of the SME sector and help overcome some of the challenges on the entrepreneurial side. As the definition of SMB varies vendor to vendor, how do you define an SMB? How is the SMB in India performing? We proceed with the rather simplistic and practical criteria that any company with an annual turnover between Rs. 20 crore to Rs. 100 crore falls

SME CHAT

under the category of a SMB. A company that has maximum of 100 employees is a small business and one with employees more than a 100 and less than 1000 is generally considered to be a medium sized business. I was just reading a survey report according to which there are over 48 million small and medium enterprises in India now, generating as many as 1.3 million jobs per year, which makes it second in employment generation only to the agricultural sector. Since the last 5 years, the SMB industry has been growing at a pace of 4.5%. I guess that answers the second part of your question. What is Start Manage Expand? Start Manage Expand is an event series of SMBConnect. It is an annual meet, held across many cities in India where we provide a great opportunity to businesses to interact with experts’. It is also a great platform for brands to connect with SMEs and showcase their new products and services. We have partnered with some of the biggest brands such as Vodafone, Flipkart, Tally, Alibaba.com, CRISIL, Jet Airways, IndiaMART and VeriSign Inc, for our events in the past. The topics of discussion involve complete business understanding about key issues concerning SMEs related to Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Logistics, Funding and Technology. Here, experienced industrialists and business academicians guide SMEs to the next level and motivate them to take a step forward in their business. Strategies involving innovative techniques and methods are also identified to boost the environment for business owners.

“THERE ARE A LOT OF POLICIES AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE BEING CREATED FOR SMES BY BOTH STATE GOVERNMENT AND CENTRAL OVERNMENT. SMBCONNECT EXPERTS HELP BUSINESSES DECIPHER THEM.”

What are your future plans? SMBConnect is expanding and growing steadily. For our first event series we had covered 20 cities, which last year rose to 25 cities, where we had over 250 experts and panellists and connected with over 25,000 delegates. This year we have spread it further to 30 cities. Apart from this, we are looking forward to include more service providers in our panel, thus making ourselves one stop solution for any small and medium business requirements. Including more and more associations, service providers, government bodies and industry experts will ensure that entrepreneurs don’t have to look any further when they are looking for any service they need. We are also looking at expanding internationally. As we expand our team, we are keen to build SME to SME contact across different countries and are keen to establish connects in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and East Africa. These are the locations we believe we could add much value to.

HOW IS SERVER

MARKET SERVING

SMBS?

The overall India server market is expected to grow, and while the SMBs are still courting the virtualised server market the future it seems will be virtualised or cloud for them. BY KARMA NEGI

ccording to a recently published report by TechSci Research, “India Server Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2019”, the country’s server market revenues are projected to grow at a CAGR of around 7.4% during 2014-19. Another report by AMI-Partner’s “2013 India SMB Server and Storage Study”, had projected the India SMB server market to grow over $500 million by 2017. Currently, the overall server market is going through a dip, says AMI, with the shipments witnessing a double digit drop, and are likely to contract further in the next six to 12 quarters. Every business, whether big or small, needs

24 SME CHANNELS SEPTEMBER 2015

a server; and the kind of server depends on the requirement of each business. Do you want your server to fulfill the basic needs like file server for standard management of productivity, mails, basic policies, or does your business require servers to handle more advanced needs like business applications such as ERP, CRM, Accounting packages, HRMS, etc. And with the invasion of cloud it seems all this will very soon move into the Cloud as well. “It is likely that a significant proportion of these are going to move to the cloud. The transition is happening quite fast. Starting from email to other applications like ERP, HRMS etc – all of these are gradually moving out of an on-premise to a hosted environment along with storage

as compliance,” says Somnath Das, Research Manager at AMI-Partners. In the march towards Cloud it seems it’s the SMBs, especially the first time adopters, who are showing greater interest captivated by the low/no CAPEX. However, the demand for physical servers still exists among SMBs. They have become extremely cautious about upfront investments, selective about form factors and looking for new age servers like HP’s Moonshot which is an application defined server, says Das. The main drivers of this are verticals like Retail, ITeS , Manufacturing and Services. Within these verticals, the growing demand for core applications is also contributing to the growth of servers in India.

Security still remains a key issue for the SMBs and are apprehensive to share data on a thirdparty server. This remains the main reason which is still driving the demand for new physical/onpremise servers.

Server Market: Peekaboo The rise in mobility, the start-up culture, social media etc. has led to a sunami of data and contributed to the increasing workload hence organisations are left with no choice but to invest in servers. While start-ups contribution to the growth in the server market is miniscule but they are the most technologically savvy, having a clear cut idea of what they want and how to go about it, and many are driving in droves towards Cloud as a lucrative proposition due to its low Opex and Capex model plus the scalability it offers.

When it comes to choosing the right server, there is a huge demand for blade servers large driven by the adoption of x86 servers by the SMBs and enterprises. as it demands less power, takes up less space, has higher scalability and simplifying cabling. New technologies like big data and cloud computing has also given a stimulus to the blade server market. IDC reports that the x86 servers has a major share of around 85.6% to the overall Indian blade server market for the year 2015. It is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 9.2% from 2015 to 2020. Nonetheless, the the high investment has hindered the growth of blade servers from SMEs as opposed to enterprises. “These particular servers are effective to address increasing volume of real time data requirements due to increasing usage of cloud computing / Big Data” replies Das.

It’s mainly the larger SMB players who are adopting consolidation of virtualisation. Meanwhile B class cities have also started contributing in a big way,” informs Naik. While so much has been said and done what virtualisation to do to one’s business, the adoption rate among the SMBs is still not up to the mark. Due to their tech savviness they know how virtualised servers can benefit their business and further its growth but one drawback is their lack of idea of the ROI offered by adopting virtualisation. The absence of adequate knowledge on the total cost of adopting virtualised solutions is hindering their eager adoption of this technology.

Finally As per industry estimate the adoption of server virtualisation is increasing but still the current penetration among SMBs is still in single digits. AMI predicts that SMB spending on Virtualisation will grow at over 20% CAGR over the next four years – mainly driven by Server Virtualisation.

PRATEEK PASHINE, HEAD, ENTERPRISE BUSINESS, TATA TELESERVICES

“IOT AND M2M EXPECTED TO SEE HUGE ADOPTION”

Enterprise business is a key area of focus for Tata Teleservices. In a chat with SME Channels Prateek Pashine, Head, Enterprise Business, Tata Teleservices, talks about how the company plans to target the SME market.

What are the key challenges that you are addressing for the SMEs? We typically see three broad challenges for SMEs in India: First, geographically SMEs are scattered across the country unlike large enterprises which are present in few clusters. Reaching out to large segment of SMEs in every nook and corner is a big challenge logistically. We at Tata Teleservices (TTSL) have strong network of channel partners who reach out to SMEs in India. Secondly, today SME have hardly any full-fledged IT team and domain capabilities so as to de-risk themselves from technological obsolescence. To meet the challenge, we play the role of IT department to SMEs by offering customise, easy to deploy and cost-effective solutions. We take care of technology upgradation and optimisation, maintenance, etc. Capital expenses also being a key challenge for SME, so we allow customers to avail our ‘pay-as-you-grow’ option to reduce their cash outlay burden. Thirdly, in a constantly evolving technological landscape SMEs look to other ecosystem which can provide right solutions to brand and market their products and services. We offer specific solutions such as Hosted IVR, Call Register Service, TollFree Service, etc. that help SMEs in their marketing, branding, sales efforts. What is your go-to-market strategy? Our go-to-market strategy hinges on two very critical factors with respect to SME customers – reaching out to million SMEs in every nook and corner of the country, and offering these customers customised, innovative and affordable solutions. We have close to 1,200 channel partners to offer ICT solutions to customers in over 60 cities across India. The company has set up a robust infrastructure which includes the largest fibre optic backbone in the country covering over 1,25,000 km covering major cities in India. What are some of the upcoming technology trends that you see being adopted by SMEs? Is there a story beyond cloud adoption? Over the next decade, Internet of Things (IoT) and M2M is expected to see huge adoption across sectors. It is expected to bring billions of data-generating devices online and connect a vast stream of data with people, processes and other devices. There are some niche applications such as asset tracking, vehicle tracking, meter reading, home automation, etc., that can benefit immensely. We believe that the Government’s ‘Digital India’ and ‘Smart Cities’ initiatives will further drive adoption of IoT technologies across industries in the coming years. Globally, IoT has seen deployments across Transport, Utilities, Retail, Logistics and Security. In India, deployments have happened primarily in the Utilities space. The other areas which have seen large deployments are in transport i.e. fleet management of large commercial vehicles and Taxis and Retail. Everyone is talking ‘Digital’. How are enterprises actually taking this renewed focus? What is Tata Teleservices attempt, and technology strengths in this area? We are witnessing huge adoption of technology which is dra-

matically changing the way enterprise functions today. Large scale adoption of smartphones, tablets and other devices is resulting into convergence of IT and Mobile Applications because users want to access business applications on their mobile devices as well. ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) is currently playing a big role in enterprise mobility. Enterprises are also adopting cloud based services to avail better return-on-investment and de-risk themselves from technological obsolescence. With the ubiquity of data network and consumerisation of technology, enterprises are able to improve their productivity and operation efficiency. However, this also brings lot of challenges in terms of security of confidential data – IPRs, customer database, financial and strategic information, which is at huge risk. TTSL has put in place various initiatives wherein we ensure that customer data is secure, while enabling customers to have a mobile, connected and productive workforce. What kind of innovative solutions are you bringing for the SMEs? We offer customised product and services to SMEs which is most comprehensive suite of solutions in the enterprise space - enterprise voice, enterprise data and broadband, managed services, and IoT/M2M and enterprise mobility. In addition to providing connectivity, which is a key enabler of these solutions, we also offer customers the complete solution which includes the Device and the Application. This approach ensures that the customer does not go through the headache of dealing with multiple vendors towards the delivery of the solution and from our perspective it allows us to provide more value to our customers. We have enabled our SME customers to procure some of the product and services through an online portal which ensures that they are able to procure services easily and go live quickly.

RAKESH MISTRY, DIRECTOR AND CFO, CYBEROAM

“INDIA WILL BE THE WORLD’S FASTEST GROWING ECONOMY” The China share market crash has spooked every economy in the world, and some sections in India call it the opportune moment for the country to emerge as a leading economy. In a chat with SME Channels Rakesh Mistry, Director and CFO, Cyberoam talks about how this can affect India.

How has the downturn in the china market affected or can affect the India market? The immediate effect is quite clearly visible, share markets have crashed, FII’s are pulling out of the market and commodities prices like oil and steel reaching new low. Renminbi’s devaluation has compelled RBI to allow further rupee depreciation from 64 to 66+ to make India exports competitive to China and other countries. The inherent weakness in Chinese economy is repeatedly getting highlighted with weak PMIs and declining GDP growth. This is spooking the investors more than anything else; there is a fear that unlike the past, this time Chinese slump can trigger global recession, though it is too early to confirm the same. Nonetheless, the slowdown in China market will definitely lower down prices of commodities like steel etc. due to very excessive productions capacity at China. There is advantage, however, to India too. India story is intact at least as of now pending few important reforms, so India will get more fund flow and that will help stock market, rupee and in turn Modi’s “Manufacture in India” initiative. I am optimistic about Indian economy withstanding this phase of volatility. What does it mean for India’s IT industry in particular? How has it been affected? India’s IT industry will definitely benefit in short-

term from rupee depreciation, but still the IT demand is not growing from developed countries as expected. Any slowdown in world growth due to China will definitely impact negatively on IT demand and in turn to IT Industry in medium to long term. We need to see to what extent US is getting affected due to China and how Europe will be performing in the future. How has the weaker rupee affected your business? We are net exporters, so we are benefited from weaker rupee and fortunately our business from China is negligible. Moreover, Security is not a cyclical industry, at least not anymore. For many of our global clients, Security forms the core of their business; even those who used to take Security as an afterthought have changed their approach. The cost of data breaches is already getting bigger every year, and during tougher times no management would like to have any oversight on the Security aspect. Hence, demand for security products is going to go up every day. What does this teach us so as to not go down the same path? I think, and it is supported by many experts as well, that the Chinese share market collapse was on the cards for quite some time as nobody knows why the Chinese market rocketed last year - creating huge production capacity without corresponding demand planning is getting proved

negatively. Also there are well documented reports on how China’s economic planning has gone south; apparently, there is a limit to which cheap labour and manufacturing can sustain growth. I believe, that an equal focus on building a knowledge economy would have given China a better mileage in the long term. Is there any silver lining to this market volatility? As I said earlier, for India, there is definitely a silver lining. The reduced prices for commodities like oil, gold which forms major part of import has improved our trade and fiscal deficit like anything. And this will improve day by day as those prices are going to be lower for long period of time. Also the Government is committed to increase planned expenditure and working hard on reform process which will increase local demand and also attract more FDI and FII investment. If your remove China, India will be the fastest growing economy in the world, and the World will eye India market for investment, which will also push Manufacturing in India success. I think India in best position to take advantage of this situation in medium to long term subject to proper action from Governments including oppositions. There will be negative impact temporary due to negative sentiments across the globe, this will turn out to be positive for India in times to come.

DISASTER RECOVERY ON AN UPTREND Markets and Markets predicts that the global Recovery-asa-Service market will be a $5.8B market by 2018 BY KARMA NEGI

karma@smechannels.com

T

he results from a recent survey indicates that APAC market including India is slightly slower in adopting newer data protection technologies and practices that are being adopted in Europe and North America. Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) refers to services that offer business continuity. The global Recovery-as-a-Service (RaaS) report by Markets and Markets predicts that RaaS will be a $5.8B market by the year 2018, growing at a CAGR of 54%.The enterprise DR management market is anywhere between $1B and $2B. Disaster recovery (DR) is still a fragmented market, and as per Sanovi Technologies most DR offerings are point solutions, suitable for a specific layers within a heterogeneous IT environment of a typical enterprise – eg: there may be a recovery software for the Storage Technology or a database piece, but not for the entire application. This causes the DR offerings to become IT infrastructure layer specific, or a vendor offering specific, leading to a fragmented market. Today’s large enterprises face challenges with respect to protection of massive data volumes, applications across multiple data centers and management of DR sites. Having an effective data backup and BCP/DR solution in place is what can make a difference in ensuring IT continuity. “Organisations today realize that downtime costs and data loss affects their business operations significantly. This has created the need for disaster recovery, both among the SMBs and large enterprises, to reduce the recovery time, costs, and complexities compared to the traditional recovery process,” informs Chandra Sekhar Pulamarasetti, Co-Founder & CEO, Sanovi Technologies. With the coming of cloud there has been a gradual shift towards backup and DR on cloud.

34 SME CHANNELS SEPTEMBER 2015

CHANDRA SEKHAR PULAMARASETTI, CO-FOUNDER & CEO, SANOVI TECHNOLOGIES

TRENDS IN DR Cloud drove the cost of DR down by an order of magnitude and made it so affordable to everyone that SMEs and Enterprise alike are leveraging the Virtualization/Cloud technologies for deploying comprehensive DR systems.

With the increasing dependence on 24x7 business models, Organizational Boards and CEOs are pushing up the priority for business continuity/DR projects.

Application driven business continuity is a clear technology trend that is emerging as Applications in the cloud need elasticity and dynamic growth / automatic migration.

Several new world applications like Analytics and SaaS are driving fresh demand for DR projects in large scale but very cost optimal. These emerging technologies often drive both private and public cloud based DR solutions.

Migration of workloads across Datacenters to Clouds (private or public), is increasing, and DR management solutions like Sanovi’s Cloud Continuity are best fit to address these demands.

“SMES ARE MIGRATING TOWARDS CLOUDS; AND HENCE THE BACKUP/DR INTO CLOUD WILL BE ADOPTED BY MAJORITY.” Pulamarasetti adds that while large enterprises are expected to adopt Hybrid Cloud model and retain a good percentage of their IT infrastructure on-premise SMEs are migrating towards clouds and hence the backup/DR into cloud will be adopted by majority. For the SMEs Sanovi has a Cloud Continuity offering. They work with leading partners across the world like Amazon, Netmagic, Tata Communications, C-Edge etc., which provide DRaaS using their Cloud Continuity software, thus making it possible for SMEs to have DR readiness at affordable cost. While SMEs provide opportunities there are challenges too: There is a lack of DR planning among the SMBs though there is an increasing awareness and interest in BCDR programs by them. This delays project deployments at times. Also, the SMEs may not have dedicated resources and expertise to manage business Continuity and Disaster recovery. Hence Sanovi has made the process of deployment, management and monitoring very simple, in a self-service mode. “The cloud model enables lower cost, high scalability and eliminates dependence on experts, for DR Drills and Recovery,” informs Pulamarasetti. For the coming financial year Sanovi has set a target of 70% growth.

SAVIO TOVAR DIAS, DIRECTOR (TECHNICAL OPERATIONS, GLOBAL GROWTH MARKETS), AVAYA

“WORKERS ARE USING BUSINESS APPLICATIONS” Avaya’s EDP is a portfolio of solutions which help accelerate the development of communications-enabled applications. In a chat with SME Channels Savio Tovar Dias, Director (Technical Operations, Global Growth Markets), Avaya talks about the enterprise application market.

Where’s the enterprise application market heading to in India? The fastest growing demand in the region for enterprise applications in our view is not the applications themselves, but the ability to communication-enable applications within the enterprise to respond to growing disruptive trends of mobility, social, big data and cloud. From Avaya’s perspective, the region’s enterprise has legacy unified communications (UC) tools that were developed in an era when workers were primarily deskbound and collaborated mostly with internal employees. Because of this, communications and collaboration tools today exist in silos. Workers are using business applications to conduct day-to-day work, and then UC tools are used for collaborating with other workers. But the nature of work has changed, and enterprises are building their competitive advantage on making quick decisions by involving the best people both inside and outside the organization. The big question therefore is how can employees have real-time access to the information they need to perform their jobs faster? This includes the ability to make quick decisions but also be

36 SME CHANNELS SEPTEMBER 2015

able to respond to co-workers, customers, business partners and other members of the extended enterprise at the speed the business. The answer lies in bringing communications and applications together, to create communications-enabled business applications (CEBA) that integrate UC tools and information. In my view, this is what India needs the most in the next couple of years. What are the top solutions from your portfolio in this domain? Our latest innovation into the engagement environment is the Avaya Development Platform, or what we refer to as EDP. EDP is a portfolio of solutions which help accelerate the development of communications-enabled applications. Now, companies, partners, business analysts, and ISVs, in India can integrate voice, video, text, email and mobility seamlessly into breakthrough business applications. The portfolio includes the Avaya Engagement Development Platform, Avaya SnapIn modules, and the AvayaLive Collaboratory. The success of the Avaya Engagement Environment is due in large part to the community of developers around the world creating new Snap-

“HE ANSWER LIES IN BRINGING COMMUNICATIONS AND APPLICATIONS TOGETHER, TO CREATE COMMUNICATIONSENABLED BUSINESS APPLICATIONS (CEBA) THAT INTEGRATE UC TOOLS AND INFORMATION.” In modules. When used independently, or as part of a communications workflow, application developers can simply snap-in code modules and immediately integrate new functions. Do you provide vertical-specific solutions? Creating a simpler and faster development environment is a positive step forward, but an obvious next question is how specifically will Engagement Devlopment Platform (EDP) solve customer problems, differently, for each customer at a time? An inherent value of the Avaya EDP is its flexibility to meet the individual demands of customers and create differentiated value for those customers in their market spaces.

hile the first few years were focused on establishing and validating the product in the Indian marketplace, Cloud-based ERP solution provider Plumsoft Solutions hopes that in the next few years the focus will be on expansion and scaling the organization both in India and globally by building a network of direct sales presence and channel partners. In addition, the Company wants to innovate and build vertical specific solutions that are tailor made for specific industry needs which are ready out- of-the-box. Plumsoft’s brickscube.com addresses the needs of real estate industry from marketing to delivery, project management and operations. “India is seen as the next big thing among the emerging world economies. Considering this fact, there is a growing need for businesses in our

“CLOUD ERP IS MORE AFFORDABLE ... AND ACCESSIBLE ANYTIME OR ANYWHERE.” country to become more competitive and efficient in terms of their business operations. However, we have noticed that about 90% of businesses in emerging markets, both big and small, do not have appropriate software infrastructure that can fuel their growth. This is particularly the case with Indian businesses,” informs Jay Sappidi, Founder and CEO of Plumsoft Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

“If India were to achieve 10% GDP and become the growth engine of the world, efficient technology solutions have to be adopted by businesses to foster this growth. This is perhaps the reason why we believe that there is immense opportunity for acceptance of cloud-based ERP solutions in the India market,” he adds. Plumsoft’s cloud development platform, PlumWare, is said to eliminate all the hassles involved in traditional application development; and provide the Indian businesses the much needed technology advantage that their foreign counterparts already possess. Compared to cloud-based ERP, Legacy ERP systems are static and cannot accommodate the changing business requirements in real time. Because of the rigidity and inflexibility associated with the legacy ERP systems and enterprise applications Cloud ERP becomes more affordable simply because it eliminates large upfront investments while also improving operational efficiency by providing access to business applications anytime or anywhere. “Just like consumers in emerging markets skipped one generation of telephony, the landlines, to move directly to mobile, we believe the businesses in India will skip the traditional clientserver ERP applications and move directly to cloud. Cloud ERP is more affordable, don’t need an army of IT team to maintain it on premise, and accessible anytime or anywhere,” says Sappidi. Although businesses in every size can benefit from an integrated ERP solution to streamline their operations, there is a sense of urgency among mid-sized companies (50 crores – 2000 crores turnover) to automate their operations using Cloud ERP he informs. More specifically industries in manufacturing, financial services and infrastructure are the early adopters. “Medium scale industries are more in need and open for business automation solutions and specifically integrated Cloud ERP solutions,” says Sappidi, “on the other hand small scale industries with less than 50 people still consider it more as a luxury than necessity. However, even small scale industry are more interested in specific solutions like CRM or Financial Management.” Having tasted success in a short time in the Cloud ERP space, Sappidi attributes it to two main reasons: Their ability to built ground-up keeping in mind unique needs of businesses from emerging markets; and their belief that customers’ success defines their growth. “This is the reason we prioritize success of each of our clients. We take pride in the fact that each of our clients have experienced 100% success with our ERP implementations and each and every one of our clients is referable,” he elaborates.

Over the past few years, spear phishing attacks via highly targeted messages have been the primary attack vector of successful data breaches. More than 90% of attacks on enterprise networks are the result of spear phishing methods. This has led to the rise of a new breed of security solutions – Sandbox Based Gateway Appliances. This solution provides advanced malware detection for incoming emails in the form of an easy to use sandbox appliance. It launches every incoming email attachment in a secure virtual environment to monitor its runtime behavior. In case it detects any malicious activity, a red flag is raised. The results of this technology have been positive and many zero-day Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) have been detected and blocked by this approach. So does the implementation of this security signal the end of APTs and data breaches? The early success of such Sandbox based appliances can be attributed to the fact that malware variants were never designed with such protection mechanisms in mind. Instead, these samples were focused towards breaching traditional antivirus and firewall solutions. This enabled them to breach traditional security solutions with zero-day attacks very frequently. But now that more enterprises are using these Advanced Threat Protection Sandbox based appli-

ances, new malware variants are being designed with the aim of penetrating this specific protection mechanism. At the Quick Heal Threat Research Labs, we have come across a new malware sample that was able to breach this Sandbox protection. It successfully worked its way around this mechanism and reached a user’s inbox without getting detected. Detailed analysis of this sample revealed that it has been designed to infect highly protected networks. It also has several anti-virtual machine and antisandbox tricks implemented within it. This malware was reported on 4th August and it has been named APT-QH-4AG15. We are in the midst of analyzing this APT threat further, and will be releasing a detailed analysis report in the next few days. What this attack has taught us is that even the most advanced Sandbox based appliance protection can be breached. As a result, enterprises need to consider and implement multiple layers of protection to safeguard their networks. While the network breaches of the last few years have raised concerns about the effectiveness of endpoint security protection, future breaches are also sure to raise the question – Can Sandbox appliances provide reliable protection against APTs?
