SMX Sponsor Spotlight: Effective Ways to Make Smart Manufacturing a Reality The following is an interview with Tom Jones, Principal Solution Architect, Industrial Software for AWS (Amazon Web Services), Seattle. He is part of AWS’ partner team and is focused on the company’s industrial software partners that offer specialized software solutions for manufacturers.

SME: How is smart manufacturing impacting manufacturing operations, supply chain and the workforce? Jones: One key way is by helping companies increase their OEE through better instrumentation, data storage and data analysis. SME: W hat are some of the trends you see in manufacturing? Jones: I’m seeing broad adoption of the cloud for running existing applications, as well as a way to quickly experiment with and roll out new applications. The ability to be agile to customer demands is a competitive differentiator—as is the visibility that provides an understanding of what is happening on the shop floor. SME: What are the key business values that smart manufacturing can address? Jones: Greater efficiency and reduced downtime; improved asset tracking; better quality control/reduced defects; reduced material waste; and improved safety. I also am starting to see augmented reality as a way to train employees faster and more easily. SME: What are the biggest barriers faced by manufacturers who are NOT adopting smart technologies? Jones: The biggest barrier is inertia. Once manufacturers understand the reasons to use smart technologies and see how easily they can experiment, they start moving quickly, overcoming that inertia. SME: How should leadership meet the challenges of smart manufacturing and digital transformation? Jones: Change can be difficult for any organization. Leaders should educate themselves and then use that education to inspire their teams to embrace change. Digital transformation is many things, including IIoT, data science, architecture, and, most of all, the team culture (which is probably the hardest to change). That’s a big agenda, but the best companies are getting it done. 20

Keynote Series

THURSDAY, JUNE 4 | 9:00 AM The Rise of the Industrial Internet: Inside the playbook of a “Digital Industrial VC Shark The industrial markets have changed considerably as machines, fleets and physical networks are becoming intelligent devices, intelligent networks and intelligent decisioning. The cost of instrumentation has declined dramatically, making it possible to equip and monitor any kind of asset, including those used in industry, on a widening scale. Computer processing gains continue unabated and have reached the point where it's possible to augment physical machines with digital intelligence. Remote data storage, big data sets and more advanced AI-enabled analytic tools that can process massive amounts of information are maturing and becoming more widely available. Together, these changes are creating many new tech companies and attracting large, multinational companies as partners, investors and ultimately as acquirers.

Whitney Rockley Co-Founder & Managing Partner, McRock Capital

Whitney Rockley, co-founder and managing partner, of McRock Capital has been investing in industrial technology companies for over 20 years. Whitney has a unique and highly bespoke investment strategy that she will share to identify strong tech companies targeting industrial customers in manufacturing, oil and gas, supply chain and logistics and urban infrastructure. McRock is widely recognized as the world’s first dedicated industrial IoT venture capital firm. Whitney will touch on the different digital technologies that are of significant importance to the manufacturing sector and future IIoT trends.
