Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology NAMRC Paper Citation Quality Prediction and Control in Rolling Processes Using Logistic Regression 2007 Transactions of NAMRI/SME, pp. 112-120 Summary

L Research

In industry, the NAMRI/SME paper did not only provide direct impact to real-world problem-solving, but also enlightened the use of data analytics in solving complicated process and quality issues in the steel mills, which are traditionally conservative, and low-tech. Overall, those algorithms have been implemented in OGT’s HotEye® systems, which are in use by more than 40 plants in the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the U.K. The collective implementation of the system has resulted in more than $100 million in cost savings, 1.2 billion kWh in energy savings, and 50,000 tons of CO2 emission reductions per year.

Founders Lecture 2021 Founders Lecture

A Student’s Perspective on the Early Days of NAMRC NAMRI/SME Founders Lecture, June 2021

Warren R. DeVries, PhD, FSME

Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and Dean Emeritus of Engineering and Information Technology, UMBC

Abstract In the spring of 1970, I was an undergraduate mechanical engineering student and in the spring of 1974 I was a graduate student. Some of what I’ll speak about is based on firsthand knowledge, but a lot of it is what I gleaned from listening and learning from individuals who were there when I was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, primarily Marvin DeVries and the late S.M. (Sam) Wu. In both cases, I’ve focused on things that students talk about and remember over a period of 50 years. I’ve taken this perspective first, because students have been an important part of NAMRC from the beginning — it’s often the first venue where a student makes that first conference presentation. Second, as we near the 50th anniversary of this annual gathering, it’s important to reflect on if it has held on to its core values, while remaining flexible and equipped to lead change in manufacturing research and practice.

Manufacturing Vision Award The Blue Sky Competition at NAMRC is designed to identify long-term challenges and new visionary ideas for manufacturing so as to influence the future of manufacturing research and education in the U.S. Authors will present their abstracts during the conference, and presentation winners — as determined by the committee — will receive the NAMRI | SME David Dornfeld Manufacturing Vision Award. This award is named after the late University of California at Berkeley professor — also a fellow and past director of SME — who was considered a global leader in sustainable and smart manufacturing. The award recognizes outstanding vision and leadership within the manufacturing community. The competition will be judged by a panel of industry and government experts, including federal program officers interested in new concepts for large multi-project manufacturing research programs with relevance to their missions. Such ideas are often described as “radical,” “outrageous,” “transformational,” “unconventional” and “breakthrough.”
