Volume 29 No. 11

This past month has seen a lot of momentum at Saint Michael: Annual giving is off to a great start, major projects for the Refresh project are nearing completion, new mid-week adult groups are flourishing, and our children are more active than they’ve been in years! Years ago, when I was active in Cursillo and Happening, we used to say, “The best is yet to come!” That’s how I feel about Saint Michael! At the end of October, we celebrated work that we have done together this fall and began to look toward 2018. We elected new vestry and diocesan leadership at our Parish Meeting and began to dream about the kind of church we are becoming. It’s natural for churches to look back and fondly remember a time gone by, but what we are doing now is looking forward – and I don’t take that for granted. Saint Michael may be approaching its 75th anniversary (that will be in 2020), but we are not resting on our laurels. There has been amazing work done together in this church, but so much is left to do. The creativity and vision I sense in the leadership of this church excites me and I’m proud to be a part of it. As we look ahead, I’m reminded of the sermon The Rev. Mary Lessmann gave before our Parish Meeting. She spoke about the process of building cathedrals: Those who make the plans and begin to build are rarely ones who get to see the finished product. Instead, they begin their work knowing that they will only be a part of the journey. Those leaders and dreamers do all they continued on page 19

Vestry and Diocesan Convention Delegates Elected at Parish Meeting Five new Vestry members and delegates and alternates to the 2018 Diocesan Convention were elected at the Parish meeting on Sunday, October 29. The new Vestry members, serving three year terms beginning January 1, are: • • • • •

John Ellerman Jane Green Jay Lipscomb Kyle Moore Anna Paccone

They succeed Eric Conner, Mark Demler, Kathy Kelley, J.C. Snead, and Margaret Spellings whose terms expire in January. Delegates elected to three year terms as Diocesan Convention delegates are Terry Demler, J.C. Snead, and Scott Wilson. Alternates serving in the following order are Heather Lorch, Blair Oden, and Jack Rubarth. They will begin their service with the convention in the fall of 2018. Following the election, the Rector, Chris Girata, updated the significant initiatives that are underway in the parish including: the 2018 Stewardship Campaign, the new technology solutions and member portal, formation and music programs, the campus planning following release of the Preston Center Task Force report, and our membership and evangelism actions. You can view the Rector’s report online at saintmichael.org.

I Believe in Angels

I Believe In Angels Kicks Off The Season Of Giving Benefiting Children and Seniors In Jubilee Park “I Believe in Angels” is a partnership between Saint Michael and Jubilee Park. Saint Michael families donate Christmas gifts which are used to build a holiday toy store at the Jubilee Park and Community Center. Jubilee Park families are required to volunteer in the community throughout the year to participate in the shopping experience. Last year, Saint Michael parishioners made Christmas wishes come true for nearly 200 children and 110 senior citizens through generous donations.

2

Please “adopt” angels from the tables located by the Parlor or near Saint Michael Chapel on Sundays beginning November 5. Gifts must be returned by December 8. We invite you to participate and minister to these families in the true spirit of Christmas. Volunteers are also needed to work the Angel tables on Sundays, to help sort gifts at The Jubilee Center on Friday, December 15 and to help with the family shopping day on Saturday, December 16. For more information, please contact Nancy Moore at nancystahlamoore@yahoo. com or Maria Martin.

Heart of Giving

The Good Samaritan Fund

Administered by Saint Michael’s clergy, the Good Samaritan Fund provides non-judgmental assistance and hope to non-parishioners in need.

Tela Honduras Mission Trip

For more than a decade Saint Michael parishioners have spent a week in Tela, Honduras and surrounding communities providing Christian education, dental care, and overall hygiene programs to area school children. The teams also repair, restore, or build community projects.

Amistad Bolivia Mission Trip

The Heart of Giving Benefits Saint Michael Outreach Ministries Spread the spirit of the season with a Heart of Giving offering to Mission and Outreach ministries acting as God’s hands in the world. When you make tax-deductible gifts in honor of friends, business associates, or family members, you will receive Heart of Giving acknowledgment cards to give the people on your Christmas list. Each card describes how your gift in that person’s honor provides tangible benefits for the Mission and Outreach initiatives of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. In 2016 the Mission and Outreach Leadership Committee made the determination that in order to allow all ministries to benefit from the Heart of Giving, there would be a 3-year rotation of giving to the ministries. Further, as the Heart of Giving funds are the only ones offered to The Good Samaritan Fund, it would be a permanent recipient. Therefore, the following ministries will be recipients of The Heart of Giving 2017:

Saint Michael and All Angels supports Casa Esperanza at the Amistad Mission’s La Villa providing a home and hope to abandoned and abused children of Cochabamba, Bolivia. In addition to funds, our parishioners each year travel to Bolivia to work with the children.

Honduras Threads Mission Trip

A micro-lending ministry of Saint Michael, women of Tegucigalpa, Honduras learn valuable skills and are empowered to define their own future.

Please look for the tables that will be set up beginning on Sunday, November 26th through December 17th and go online to purchase your Heart of Giving cards to give family and friends during the Christmas season while supporting important Mission and Outreach initiatives of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Five cards will be provided per $25 donation and may be picked up at the Heart of Giving table or at the south lanai reception desk during the week. All donations must be made prior to December 31.

A Blessed and Costly Listening Many people say that they wish they would get as clear a message from God as characters in the Bible seem to get: a voice speaking our own language straight into our ears, “Do this, do that.” But is there really such a big difference between then and now? The opening chapters of the Gospel of Luke present several people of different ages and stations in life, each of them startled by the unexpected sense of a life-altering call from God: Elizabeth, Zechariah, Mary, John the Baptist, Anna, Simeon, Jesus. They answer with their ordinary lives as parent, priest, worker, prophet, widow, neighbor. This half-day retreat will engage the stories of these ancestors as they struggle to understand what they are called to, how much it will change them, and how much they will gain and lose along the way. Their doubts, fears, and courage challenge us to pay attention to the nudges, hints, desires, and invitations that draw us into the larger purposes of God in our own day. Jane Patterson is Associate Professor of New Testament and Director of Community Care at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, and one of the authors of Calling All Years Good: Christian Vocation Throughout Life’s Seasons. Her previous work has concerned the role of metaphor in Paul’s letters, Keeping the Feast: Metaphors of Sacrifice in 1 Corinthians and Philippians.

Warden’s Corner

Eric Conner, Sr. Warden

As we head into the closing months of 2017, I wanted to update the parish on the fabulous work to date on our organizational initiatives and respective road maps. For those who were at the Parish Meeting, the Rector outlined some “early wins” resulting from the efforts to date including:

• Technology Initiative Development of an online member portal which allows for profile updates and access to giving history.

6

Remarkables Initiative – Initial development of the storyline for what makes Saint Michael unique and remarkable so that members can deliver a consistent evangelical message to welcome the disconnected or disengaged.

Formation Initiative – Addition of Children’s Chapel as a new Formation experience and identification of direct staffing needs (which are rolled into the Stewardship efforts).

Music Initiative – Establishment of new choir norms, introduction of children involvement in the Sunday services, and coordination of an SMU Compline service on Sunday nights.

Campus Planning Initiative – Set the initial vision and plan in concert with the desires of the parish (based on the survey) and the needs of the greater community.

Member Integration Initiative – Set up the Welcome Center, expanded the greeter program, and developed a framework for how our church can effectively welcome and integrate visitors.

High Performance Staff Initiative – Streamlined organizational chart, created HR committee and established better systems for performance evaluation and development.

These are just tidbits of the larger body of work. I am enormously grateful to the Vestry, Staff and Clergy for their efforts. Please take time to read more at www.saintmichael. org/imperatives. Separately, the Stewardship efforts (thanks to Caroline Marak and her team) are off to a great start. Our target is a 10% increase in overall giving, so that we may directly support current operations while expanding our efforts in Youth, Music, and Membership. Many parishioners have commented how much they appreciate the specific metrics and guidance provided in the pledge letter and overall campaign. Finally, I want to congratulate our new Vestry members and Diocesan Convention delegates and alternates. I am humbled and enthusiastic about the energy, talents and passion of the collective group. Saint Michael and All Angels is privileged to have such willing and capable members! As always, we are very interested in your feedback, so please feel free to engage with members of the Staff, Clergy, or Vestry. Alternatively, you can email vestry@saintmichael. org with any specific comments or questions.

For Your Information Rector, Chris Girata Guest Chaplain at the U. S. Congress Our Rector, The Rev. Dr. Christopher Girata, was Guest Chaplain at the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, October 24, and delivered the prayer opening the session. Congressman Jeb Hensarling, a Saint Michael parishioner, invited Fr. Girata to serve as Guest Chaplain. The Rector’s prayer follows: Gracious God, we thank you for the gift of this life and ask your blessing upon the world you have made. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble. Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will. Guide all who govern and hold authority in this nation, and kindle in every heart the true love of peace. Make our lives a sign of your love to this broken world, that unity may overcome estrangement, forgiveness heal guilt, and joy conquer despair. Grant that the bonds of our common humanity, by which all your children are united one to another, may be so transformed by your grace, that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. All this we ask in the name of God, our creator, redeemer, and sustainer. Amen.

The Good Shepherds Good Shepherds Salute Saint Michael’s Farmers Market “From farm-to-table” was the theme of the Good Shepherd’s Annual Meeting on October 12. The entire luncheon came from vendors at Saint Michael’s Farmers Market. The Rev. Greg Pickens told the gathering that the Good Shepherd Ministry is a ministry of caring through presence and communication in the neighbors they serve. He said they truly were the “hands and feet of God in the community.” Nancy Wilbur, the volunteer director of Saint Michael’s Farmers Market, shared the success of the market this year. She said more than 15,000 customers came to Saturday morning markets during the summer season. She spelled out the meaning of Farmers Market for ladies saying: F = Friendly, A = Alive, R = Robust, M = Ministry, E= Evangelic, R = Renewing, S = Soul satisfying. M = Makes new friends, A = Agriculture, R = Reach, K = Kind, E = Educational, T = Testamonial. “Saint Michael’s Farmers Market is a Friendly, Alive, Robust, Ministry that is Evangelic, Renewing and Soul Satisfying. It Makes new friends through Agricultural products that Reach out with a Kind, Educational Testimony of God’s grace.”

In September more than 150 parishioners met at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church to package the meals, two weeks later Saint Michael sponsored another meal packaging event at the Episcopal School of Dallas, and on Sunday, October 29 our members met at Temple Emanu-El to finish the job of creating 500,000 hurricane relief meals. The success was celebrated with cupcakes and smiles for everyone.

Pastoral Care The Power of Prayer – When You Really Need It

Soul Support: Being Present to Friends and Family at Their Life’s End

We pray when we feel overwhelmed and the two speakers at the Thursday, November 16 Prayer Ministry meeting had every right to be overwhelmed. Seth Elliott, age 22, was an ordinary college freshman athlete before cancer struck. With no strength, muscle mass, hair, or scholarship -- his world went dark. Roger Shackelford got the doctor’s diagnosis which meant he would be powerless and confined to a wheelchair the rest of his life. Both Seth and Roger saw God work in miraculous ways. All are invited for a light dinner ($10) and an evening of personal sharing about tragedy, suffering, and the power of prayer. Please contact Katherine Bowen to make a reservation, kbowen@saintmichael.org. ..............

Sunday, November 12 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Parlor The challenge of being a caregiver for loved ones with memory loss issues is real. The goal of the Mind Heart and Soul Ministry is to blend practical, science based, and medically sound advice with a strong statement of God’s presence in caregiver’s lives. Please join us as we offer a presentation that will help equip and inspire you on the caregiving journey.

Supplying cookies for receptions or helping to serve at the receptions are two areas where you can be of great help to our parish family. If you have an interest in serving in one of these ways, please contact Ann Mills, amills@saintmichael.org.

Children and Family Ministry Sunday School Stewardship Outreach Projects Spark and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (children age 4-3rd grade) are collecting winter clothing items that will be distributed at The Gathering, the downtown worship service for the homeless at Thanks-Giving Square. There are collection boxes in each Sunday School classroom to collect new hats, gloves and scarves. VNA sponsors the Holiday Gift Project, which facilitates the delivery of 4,000 toiletry items on Christmas. We are collecting toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, lotions, shampoo, socks, and washcloths. We also need volunteers to help with inventory, collecting donations, wrapping items, and delivering gifts. After learning about the VNA, the Bible 101 class will wrap washcloths and bars of soap, and decorate gift bags.

Rector’s Corner continued from page 1 can to start the race, and when it’s time, they hand the baton to the next generation, to the next group who will continue running. Saint Michael is in that phase of its history right now. Amazing women and men have poured their spirit into building up this sacred community and those of us who are still here running the race have received their work as a gift for our future. Speaking with some of his closest friends near the end of his life, St. Paul said, “My only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me: the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace (Acts 20:24).” He understood that in the course of our lives, we should not expect to begin and end the sacred work of spreading God’s love in the world, we are simply called to do the work we have been given to do. We are all called to that sacred work here at Saint Michael, and the momentum is building. We have received so much interest and energy from so many, manifested in higher attendance and engagement, as well as increased giving. You are not alone in this church community. The hopefulness of our future is activating so many and I want you to be a part of our future! As we near the rush of the holidays, please remember what you can do to play your part in the work of spreading God’s grace in our world. In particular, I ask you to consider how you will invest yourself in the work we will do together next year. If you’ve made a commitment of money and ministry in the past, I want you to consider how you will deepen that commitment next year. If you’ve been attending but not investing, it’s time to jump in. The sacred mission Christ calls us into is not something we can achieve on our own. We need one another, and sharing the journey with fellow travelers at Saint Michael is a great way to go. The year is coming to an end faster than many of us would hope, yet we still have time to make a difference in the lives of those around us, especially those who are most vulnerable. The future is bright and our task is clear. Our neighbors need

the witness of this church more than ever, and the call we have to “testify to the good news of God’s grace” has been made to each of us. May we respond together with energy and hopefulness, and together, may our cry be Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
