The Great Miracle of Christmas

Christmas has always been a very special time of year for me. When I was a child, I was very active in my Catholic church’s children’s choir. Because we didn’t have a strong adult choir, starting at a very young age, I was the lead cantor for our children’s service on Sunday mornings, and even for Christmas Eve mass. But it was singing Silent Night that I remember most. In early grade school, our children’s choir director chose a group of us to sing Silent Night in multiple languages. I was given German — stille nacht — and I sang that verse each Christmas for years. I can still sing from memory.

A Brighter Christmas for Parishioners and Neighbors Parishioners, area neighbors, and traffic on Douglas Avenue are getting a brighter Christmas from Saint Michael this year. With a suggestion and generous gift from a parishioner, the church was able to wrap six of the large oak trees and the six Christmas trees at the entrance with lights. The lights will be turned on during the Saint Michael Presents Christmas concert Sunday evening, December 3 to greet guests as they leave. The lights will brighten the holidays through the New Year. (Inside find a schedule of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, as well as activities and holiday events throughout Advent)

Advent Advent Quiet Day with The Rev. Jane Patterson, Ph.D. Saturday, December 2 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. / Tickets $10 Coke Activities Room “A Blessed and Costly Listening”

Dear Saint Michael Family, Warm greetings to you as we enter into this precious season of preparation. I hope you will enjoy our Advent devotional booklet, lovingly prepare for us by dozens of our members and staff. As you consider your own spiritual practices of preparation this season, and perhaps even ponder some New Year resolutions, let me encourage you to make your “Plus 1” a commitment to a Sunday school class or a mid-week program in 2018. We have so many wonderful offerings, there is something for everyone to enjoy! After community worship, regular and intentional Christian formation is the best way to grow in faith and love, so that in turn we might serve Christ most effectively in the world. I wish you Peace and Hope this season, and if I can be helpful to you in your faith journey, please let me know. God’s Peace,

Rev. Eric 2

Many people say that they wish they would get as clear a message from God as characters in the Bible seem to get: a voice speaking our own language straight into our ears, “Do this, do that.” But is there really such a big difference between then and now? The opening chapters of the Gospel of Luke present several people of different ages and stations in life, each of them startled by the unexpected sense of a life-altering call from God: Elizabeth, Zechariah, Mary, John the Baptist, Anna, Simeon, Jesus. They answer with their ordinary lives as parent, priest, worker, prophet, widow, neighbor. This half-day retreat will engage the stories of these ancestors as they struggle to understand what they are called to, how much it will change them, and how much they will gain and lose along the way. Their doubts, fears, and courage challenge us to pay attention to the nudges, hints, desires, and invitations that draw us into the larger purposes of God in our own day. Jane Patterson is Associate Professor of New Testament and Director of Community Care at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, and one of the authors of Calling All Years Good: Christian Vocation Throughout Life’s Seasons (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2017). Her previous work has concerned the role of metaphor in Paul’s letters, Keeping the Feast: Metaphors of Sacrifice in 1 Corinthians and Philippians (Atlanta: Society of Biblical Literature, 2015).

Advent Advent Devotionals

Advent is a season of preparation. We wait and watch as we anticipate the birth of the Christ child. Advent devotionals are a wonderful way to intentionally walk through this season. In addition to our own Advent meditation booklet, here are some suggestions for Advent devotion. Watch for the Light: Readings for Advent and Christmas This devotional contains reflections by some of our most beloved spiritual writers, both ancient and contemporary.

Advent with Evelyn Underhill Christopher Webber has selected some of Underhill’s most significant inspirational passages.

Waiting for the Wonder: Voices of Advent by Katerina Katsarka Whitley Whitley places herself in the biblical characters who played a role in the Christmas narrative, weaving stories from their perspective.

Help us celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas on Wednesday, December 6 at 6:30 in the Saint Michael Chapel. Join us for an evening prayer service in the chapel as we learn about St. Nicholas, bless candy canes, light the advent wreath and sing songs. Children are welcome to wear pajamas. St. Nick Nite will be an evening full of fun and fellowship with the opportunity to enjoy milk and cookies with our special guest St. Nick after the prayer service. Jingle Bell Mistletoe will be available for purchase with proceeds going to the North Texas Food Bank. All ages welcome as we begin the Advent season.

Parishioners Knit Hats and Scarves for Jubilee

Last summer, Byrd Teague put out a call for parishioner knitters to join her in making 100 winter hats and scarves for Jubilee Park’s senior citizens. Throughout the summer and fall the knitters toiled at home, on vacation, and at the weekly Knitting Ministry meetings. By November, they had met their goal. On Sunday, November 26, Rector Chris Girata blessed the hats and scarves during the Church worship services. They will be given to the Jubilee Park seniors at the annual Christmas Luncheon sponsored by Saint Michael. A warm thanks goes to: Lynn Baker Peggy Carr Carol Logan Gigi Poglitsch Byrd Teague

Warden’s Corner As the Rector pointed out in a recent sermon, the Advent season serves multiple purposes in our Church life. It is the season of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of our Savior’s birth, and it serves as the official beginning of the Church year. The leadership team at Saint Michael has been experiencing its own internal Advent of sorts, waiting for the Eric Conner, completion of many initiatives and Sr. Warden preparing for many, many transformative events coming in 2018. As we begin the Church year, it is appropriate to look back at the preceding year and reflect on the amazing work that has been completed. While the list below is certainly not exhaustive, it offers a glimpse into some foundational changes: • Reshuffled the leadership cycle (Vestry and Foundation) to coincide with the calendar year, thus allowing for Stewardship and budgeting to be more fully integrated into the natural calendar cycle. • Committed to a series of enhanced communication initiatives (quarterly Rector Forums, this article, redesigned graphic elements and publications) to ensure we are adequately informing our parishioners. • Shifted the Vestry to be more generative and strategic, thus allowing the very capable staff and Clergy to focus on the operational and executional aspects at which they excel. • As a result of that cultural shift, Church leadership implemented a five-year Vision process that is actionable and has systemic leadership intact (see www.saintmichael.org/ imperatives). • Hired multiple new staff members in a myriad of departments which were integrated into a streamlined and more efficient organizational model. • Executed an extremely successful Refresh, Renew and Revive campaign that outstripped aggressive funding goals, thus allowing for the physical and spiritual enhancement of our worship experiences. In conjunction, several changes were made to the worship services to better define the traditional and modern worship tracks. 6

• Revamped the relevant Vestry subcommittees to take on a more “strategic business practice” role (see the outline box below for leadership opportunities). This parish is blessed with outstanding leadership at all levels, and I want to offer my special thanks to those who have served us so faithfully in various roles over the year: •

Margaret Spellings – our ever faithful, ever present Jr. Warden, who helped shape many of the accomplishments above.

Charlie Sartain – for his years as Chancellor, guiding with good humor, good graces, and the quarterbacking skills Brady would be proud of.

Robin Robinson – for his multiple years of leading our Foundation and preparing it for the next chapter of growth and enrichment.

Grady Schleier – for his role as Treasurer, his service in small group ministries, his leadership at Saint Michael Episcopal School and many other countless roles.

It has been a privilege and honor to serve over the past year. I am supremely confident in our new Vestry leadership team of Arnold Spencer, Sally Schupp and Warren Houser and know they will serve Saint Michael well.

Seeking lay leadership for participation in the newly reconstituted Vestry Marketing & Communications committee, charged with providing overall strategic guidance in relevant marketing plans, branding and Church communications across various platforms. Heart of Giving Tela, Honduras Mission February 2 - 10 Nestled on the Honduran Caribbean coast 1.5 hours from San Pedro de Sula, the people of Tela struggle to make ends meet in one of the world’s poorest communities. They are people of God, who lovingly share their lives with Saint Michael parishioners. On the mission trip we will work with residents and the local Episcopal school on community improvement projects, Christian Education and dental fluoride treatments for children, and building relationships in the low income barrios. Together, we worship, we work and we sing (a lot!) as we celebrate God’s love side by side with members of our partner church, Holy Spirit, and communities in outlying barrios.

The Heart of Giving is a great way to recognize family, friends, or business associates at Christmas. It supports Saint Michael’s Mission and Outreach Ministries: The Good Samaritan Fund, Tela, Honduras Mission trip, Amistad, Bolivia Mission trip, and the Honduras Threads Mission trip. Heart of Giving cards are available to purchase outside the Book Shop and at the South Lanai reception.

The Good Samaritan Fund Administered by Saint Michael’s clergy, the Good Samaritan Fund provides non-judgmental assistance and hope to nonparishioners in need.

10

Being in communion with the these Tela communities for a week, we have the opportunity to live the energy, the impulse and very essence of our faith. And by week’s end, we are physically exhausted, but spiritually revitalized in our commitment to live joyfully in that truth that God loves us and God instills in us that desire to be that love for others. Be a part of us!

Honduras Threads

Jesus Cocaure is 11 years old and in the fourth grade. He has a carefree and cheerful personality, that can get him into trouble at school sometimes. He is in a small group class so he can receive personalized attention.

For 15 years, Honduras Threads has enabled women in rural areas to earn money in their own communities to better feed, house and educate their families and provide them with medical care. Honduras Threads teaches the women embroidery and sewing techniques, the skills to run their own business, provides designs and donated fabrics, and markets their beautifully hand-embroidered products. This year the five informal co-ops became a social enterprise under Honduran law. Through our volunteer efforts all year long and our mission trips once a year, we strengthen lives through work, pride and faith.

Jesus is good in Math and always does extra multiplication and divisiรณn excercises in his homework. He is becoming an excellent soccer player and loves to play touch ball with his friends. He enjoys working with his Esperanza family at the garden, and on Saturdays attends the Missionary Childhood Program. Amistad and Casa Esperanza give Jesus the stability, the encouragement, the faith, and hope to grow into his teenage and Young adult years with confidence.

Overview Spring Enneagram Class Forming In our Christian walk we strive to know and love God, our neighbor, and ourselves. The Enneagram is a personality assessment tool that helps us to learn more about ourselves so that we might learn more about how we are in relationship with God and with the people most important to us. In learning the Enneagram we discover characteristics and motivations of our personality – one of nine types. More than this, the Enneagram helps guide us in the spiritual work that is ours to do. The Enneagram has ancient roots. The Christian Desert Fathers and Mothers defined the nine personality types as early as the third century and used the system for spiritual direction and growth. In the modern era, the Jesuits rediscovered the Enneagram and continue its use in spiritual formation. Mary Ann Webster and The Rev. Mary Lessmann will facilitate this class which will utilize the DVD curriculum of Suzanne Stabile, an internationally recognized Enneagram master and a very entertaining presenter. We will meet in the Coke Room for twelve weekly sessions beginning Wednesday, February 7 and continuing through May 2. Classes will meet from 1:00 to 2:30. Registration is required. There will be a small fee for the class workbook, but scholarships are available. If you would like to register for this offering or have questions, please contact The Rev. Stewardship The Joy in Generosity The 2018 Stewardship season has been a true testament to the joy and excitement that so many receive when supporting the bright future of Saint Michael and All Angels. The support that so many have shown by increasing their gifts has brought us to a new place at this point in the campaign. We are at 72% of our $5.6 million goal, with $1.6 million left to raise. When we give together, our community is stronger! Your participation is essential to our collective success. In 2018, there are three ministry areas that are of highest priority to our parish; Youth, Music, and Membership and Evangelism. “Our goal is for every person, from youngest to oldest, to be engaged in ongoing Christian Formation. Our Christian Education efforts will be greatly increased next year by the generosity of the people of Saint Michael, which will enable us to add a few new staff and enlarge our programs and participation.” – The Reverend Dr. Eric Liles, Associate for Formation “As our music program enters a period of wonderful growth in offering numerous opportunities for children and youth, so do our staffing needs. It is a blessing to begin realizing a revitalization of choirs for boys and girls, and strengthening our existing adult choirs. We are so excited about how this will impact the lives of those within the choir programs and those in worship!” – Jonathan Ryan, Director of Music and Organist

16

“Additional funding and volunteer support in 2018 will allow us to increase our ability to not only provide a radical welcome experience to newcomers and parishioners, but also develop a variety of targeted opportunities to incorporate ALL members into the life of our congregation. Intentionality in reaching outward to our community by using our tools, skills, and gifts will create an invitation to become a part of Saint Michael – the key to being a vibrant parish for future generations.” – Anne Schmidt, Membership Coordinator We can make these goals and others a reality. The average pledge increase has been more than 10%! As you consider your pledge, prayerfully consider increasing your 2018 pledge by 10%. Together we will continue to extend God’s kingdom!

Rector’s Corner continued from page 1 It was these experiences that formed me and makes Christmas my favorite church holiday. For Anglican Christians, the Christmas event is the foundation for everything else. The moment when God becomes flesh, when God becomes incarnate in the person of Jesus, is the fulfillment of all that has been and will be. We believe that when God creates each of us in His image, and in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s presence is complete. The incarnation means that the essence of God is in each one of us. Our faith is grounded in this truth and our hope is that each one of us can find and live into that God-ness, growing closer and closer to God along the way. Believe me, that God-ness in each of us can often be one of those pesky truths. Often, when I get frustrated or angry, I wish I could just write someone off. But I remember the truth of Christmas — God is in us — and I know that I can find God in everyone, even the most troublesome. In my heart, I know that any one of us can make a poor choice that we will later regret. We all know the sound of that small voice inside of us. We know when we feel the nudge to act in ways that are good and true. It’s the God-ness in us. As Philippians 2:13 says, “…it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” God works in and through you and me, guiding us to do that which is pleasing in His sight. In a way, that small voice is acknowledging the dramatic fulfillment of the incarnation of God. Imagine listening to a brilliant symphony, but the very middle of the work was missing. The core of the work that brings the beginning and the end together is absent. You would miss the grand scope of the entire symphony because the two parts are disconnected. For us, the core of our story, the defining moment of our common humanity, is the incarnation of God in Jesus.

some superstitious set of mysterious beliefs, but the center of our great story that creates and connects us to our past, honoring those who have come before us and inspiring us into a future we can only begin to imagine. Emmanuel, God with us, is the radical shift in the way we live. We often talk about the incarnation and resurrection, Christmas and Easter, as two distinct ideas. But together, they are the missing modulation of our great symphony. Together, they are the Great Miracle, God’s pivotal act of love for each one of us. The Great Miracle shakes us out of the winter of the past and into the spring of the future, into the new life that God always hoped and dreamed for us. But there’s a catch — because God’s love for us is real and true, we have the power to refuse the hopefulness of spring and remain in the darkness of winter. God does not and will not force us into the new life that is promised in Christ. And so, my brothers and sisters, I invite you into this Advent season to prayerfully and thoughtfully discern your own choice. Will you choose to turn toward the radiant light of new life, or choose to remain in the darkness of the past? This year, as the world celebrates the Christmas holiday, hold the deeper, more profound truth of the Great Miracle in your hearts and minds. Consider what the incarnation can mean to you. Imagine stepping into the new life you so desperately want, walking with Jesus along the way. This year, celebrate the renewal of your life through the incarnation of God with your Saint Michael family at Christmas, and may this family of Christians live into a new life together through the greatest of all miracles.

The incarnation is the story of a descent and a resurrection. It is the bridge that connects our world with God’s kingdom so that everything that came before Jesus can be understood fully and can direct everything that comes after. Jesus is not 23
