The 2017 Parish Party, sponsored by the Women of Saint Michael, will be a star-studded evening with dancing, great food, an art auction, opportunities to purchase one-of-a-kind events for a special occasion, and a wine and whiskey pull of coveted vintages and spirits. I was recently reminded of that old American Express slogan after a talk I gave to one of our ministry groups. If you’ve been in any of those small settings, you’ve likely heard me talk about the differences between belonging to a church community and simply attending church. Now is as good a time as any to unpack that concept in a formal article. First, this is nothing new, yet, I think, it has a “newness” about it. For a very long time, and especially in the Episcopal Church, there has been an emphasis on inclusivity, and rightly so! We continually remind ourselves that Jesus did not come for any one group of people. Jesus came to invite everyone, every single person, to receive the truth of God and be saved from a pointless life of self-serving heartbreak. Jesus offers every single person a glimpse of heaven, a vision of what God promises our world can be, and how we can work toward that glorious reality here and now. continued on page 19

Brother James Koester serves as the Superior of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Before becoming Superior he was the Senior Brother at the Society’s rural monastery, Emery House, in West Newbury, where he rediscovered a childhood dream to be a farmer. He came to the Society from parish ministry on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada, in 1989. He is a bee keeper, an iconographer, and is fascinated by what the Anglo-Saxon period of English church history (about AD 410 to 1066) can teach the Church today. These pieces are no longer in production and are not available in any store. They come in various sizes to fit any home or office environment. They will be sold significantly below the retail price for the Women of Saint Michael’s charities. The Cross Vessels can be purchased online, at Women of Saint Michael tables on Sundays in the church, or at the Parish Party where they will be used as table center pieces. Annual Parish Meeting Vestry/Convention Delegate Nominations Announced The Vestry at its January meeting nominated the following parishioners for election to the Vestry or as Delegates to the Diocesan Convention. The vote will be at the church’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 26.

Vestry Bonner Allen

Bonner Allen has been a member of Saint Michael and All Angels for 20 years, having grown up in the church. She is an active member of the Women of Saint Michael serving as an Assistant Treasurer, a member of its gift committee, and the Parish Party committee. Bonner is currently the President of the Junior League of Dallas.

Marla Jacks Briggle

Marla Briggle has been an active communicant of Saint Michael for nearly 40 years. She serves on the Altar Guild, Funeral Guild, and as a captain of the Wedding Guild. She has served as a delegate and alternate representing the church at Dallas Diocesan Conventions. Marla is active in national and international Anglican and Episcopal Church affairs. She served as a Shepherd for the Presiding Bishop’s office at the Church’s national conventions in Indianapolis and Salt Lake City, and has leadership roles at The American Cathedral in Paris and St. James American Episcopal Church in Florence, Italy.

Warren Houser

Warren Houser has been a member of Saint Michael and All Angels for 30 years. He has been extremely active in the church’s youth program having served as a middle school leader, taught high school and the Edge Sunday School classes, chaperoned two high school mission trips to Honduras, and has been a confirmation mentor. Additionally, Warren has served as an usher for 13 years, and has led men’s and couple’s Bible studies.

Ben Leal

Ben Leal has been the CEO of Jubilee Park and Community Center for six years. His exposure to Saint Michael led to his confirmation and membership in the church five years ago. In addition to his work at Jubilee Park, Ben is active in the Mission Outreach Ministry and serves as an acolyte. He also participates in All Our Children, an organization which supports and promotes partnerships between Episcopal congregations and under-resourced urban communities.

Christine Paddock

Christine Paddock is a “cradle Episcopalian” and has been a member of Saint Michael and All Angels for 15 years. She currently is chair of this year’s Parish Party and served on the Rector Search and Transition Committee. Christine has been extemely active with the Women of Saint Michael and the church’s Children and Family Ministry. She was on the Early Childhood Ministry Committee for 7 years, serving as its chair in 2013, chair of the Saint Michael Episcopal School’s Barnyard Bash and its Auction Party, and as a volunteer in the Vacation Bible School Program.

Vestry Names Sally Schupp to Fill Waller’s Term The Vestry has named Sally Schupp to fill the term of Matt Waller, who announced he will resign from the Vestry and as Senior Warden following the church’s Annual Meeting, Sunday, February 26. Waller last year was elected to a second Vestry term and as Senior Warden to provide continuity during the Rector search and transition. Church Bylaws call for the Vestry to appoint a successor to fill the unexpired term of members who step down. “It has always been my intent to honor the tradition of term limits on the Vestry and to step down once our new Rector was called and in place,” Waller said. “It has been a privilege to serve this outstanding parish and to watch the enthusiasm and excitement our new Rector is generating. I thank everyone for the support that they have given me, and I’m excited that Sally Schupp is taking my place.” Sally will fill the remaining two years of Matt’s term. Previously she has served on the Vestry, co-chaired Stewardship with her husband, Chris, chaired the Mission Outreach Ministry and has been a leader of the Mission Trip to Honduras and currently serves on its Leadership Team. She also has been active in Saint Michael’s youth ministry serving on the Child Development Committee and the Parents’ Council.

For Your Information Pastoral Care Welcomes Closer Ties With the Reverend Dr. Hiltrude Nusser-Telfer As a long-time friend of Saint Michael, Hiltrude has agreed to working more closely with Pastoral Care beginning February 1. Hiltrude is already very familiar to many parishioners and to the residents of Edgemere where once a month she celebrates the Eucharist. Beginning February 3, she will join the Saint Michael hospital visitation rotation as well. Hiltrude is a licensed priest in our diocese and a Board Certified Chaplain. She received her baccalaureate and M.A. in Religious Studies from Catholic University in Louvain, Belgium. We are so grateful to welcome Hiltrude deeper into our ministries here at Saint Michael and All Angels; please introduce yourself as you meet her in the halls. ..............

Caroline Marak Named Stewardship Manager The Rector, Chris Girata, has announced that Caroline Lewis Marak has joined Saint Michael as Stewardship Manager. Working with the Rector, Vestry, and Stewardship Committee, she will lead the vision and implementation of the church’s financial growth. Previously, Caroline has served as Development Coordinator for the Major and Planned Giving division of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, and as Director of Development for the Park Cities YMCA. She has a degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Mississippi and is involved in several community activities in Dallas.

“Care Packages” to College Parishioners Work On November 2, the middle and high school students at Saint Michael met and assembled “care packages” to send to parishioners in college getting ready for final tests and the end of their first semester. The packages, which included school supplies, snacks, and good-luck wishes, were sent to around two dozen college students. Caroline Beutel, a freshman at Alabama and graduate of the Episcopal School of Dallas, received one of the packages. In January her parents, Denise and Brad Beutel, stopped by her dorm room on the way to the National Championship football game in which Alabama was playing. Pinned to her closet door was the note from Saint Michael that came with her “care package.” Her mother’s comment: “Care packages work.”


Overview Discovery: The Episcopal Church, Saint Michael, and You

P. T. Cruisers to Visit Early African American Communities in the Area.

Discovery is a new 5-week course for newcomers and members entering a new phase in life. It addresses, “What is God calling me to do next?” by exploring the history of Christianity and the Anglican Church, Saint Michael’s unique mission in Dallas, and the “how-to” of Episcopal worship. Discovery meets at 12:15 in the Coke Activities Room and continues through February with lunch provided for $10. RSVP at www.saintmichael.org/discoveryclass.

The P. T. Cruisers will travel to one of the first African American communities in the area touring the Bear Creek Heritage Center in Irving. The bus leaves the church on Thursday, February 16 at 9:30. Bishop Sumner to Address February Prayer Ministry Meeting The Prayer Ministry will host Bishop George Sumner at its Thursday, February 16 meeting. Prime Timers to Hear Psychologist on “Mind, Body, and Wellness” Dr. Andrew Clifford, a clinical psychologist, will kick off the Prime Timers’ New Year on Thursday, February 2. Dr. Clifford, formerly with the Stanford and UT Southwestern Medical Centers, works with doctors and patients to shorten hospital stays and reduce suffering and medications associated with chronic pain and illness. The Prime Timers’ meeting begins at 10:30 in the Coke Activities Room with lunch for $10. 9

The internationally acclaimed Vocal Majority will headline Saint Michael Presents’ spring Concert on Sunday, March 5. This 100+ member men’s vocal ensemble has performed for thousands of people around the world, including Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. The Vocal Majority has appeared with The Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras, and the Mormon Tabernacle choir.

For Your Information Parishioners Honored by Diocese of Dallas Parishioners Tony Briggle and Plack Carr have been honored by the Diocese of Dallas with The Order of Bishop Garrett. They were inducted by Bishop George Sumner during ceremonies at St. Matthew Cathedral Sunday, January 15. The Order of Bishop Garrett is bestowed on lay leaders who have given long and sacrificial ministry to the Diocese of Dallas in gratitude for their faithfulness and dedication to the Church.

Tony Briggle, in addition to serving as Acolyte Master at Saint Michael, has chaired the Diocesan Convention for the past seven years, chaired the Bishop’s Transition and Consecration Committee, and serves as vice chairman of American Friends of the Anglican Centre in Rome.

Plack Carr, a former Vestry member and stewardship chair at Saint Michael, was on the founding board of the Episcopal School of Dallas serving as Interim Headmaster and twice as Board Chairman, and served on the boards of the Episcopal Foundation of Dallas and Gaston Episcopal Hospital.


The Feast of Lights Feast of Lights Completes Christmas Season The cold temperatures didn’t deter the crowd as nearly 300 gathered Saturday, January 7 to celebrate Epiphany and the Feast of Lights, a ceremony many consider to be one of the most beautiful of the season. The evening began with the candlelight worship service in the church, followed by the procession of the congregation to the Garden Cloister for the traditional burning of the greens, which concluded with hot chocolate, s’mores, and refreshments.

Mission Outreach Traveling the Beatitudes: A Lenten Pilgrimage to Bolivia The Amistad pilgrimage is set to leave on March 24 for a week of fun and fellowship with the children of Casa Esperanza at Amistad Mission, followed by a tour of the Jesuit missions in and around Santa Cruz.

Missions to the Chiquitos which were founded between 1696 and 1760. These sites are a combination of traditional European church architecture and that of the native peoples of Bolivia. The tour of the missions will offer new insights into the ways Christianity has impacted the lives of native peoples in South America and how native peoples influenced Christian architecture and worship. On Sunday, we will return to the United States with an evening arrival in Dallas. Cost per missioner: $2,300

The focus of the trip is a Lenten week of service and reflection with The Beatitudes from Matthew as our anchor. Each day, we will consider a new Beatitude and reflect on its meaning for our lives and the lives of those around us. The Lenten pilgrimage is an opportunity to go deeper in our relationships with each other, with God, and with our neighbors in Bolivia. Though Bolivia is a Spanish speaking country, there is no requirement to speak Spanish. We will have bilingual guides with us during our trip. Honduras Mission Trip Underway Nearly two dozen Saint Michael missioners will leave Saturday, February 4 for the annual Mission Trip to Tela, Honduras. They will return on February 11. The group will provide fluoride treatments to area children, reading glasses to adults, conduct Christian-education classes for children in several communities surrounding Tela, and work with residents on a public construction project. Keep our missioners in your prayers this week.

Pilgrimage Schedule The group will spend 4-5 days in Cochabamba at the Amistad Mission, an orphanage caring for abandoned or orphaned children. At the end of the week, we will journey to Santa Cruz for a tour of a World Heritage Cultural site, the Jesuit

Join our Mission Outreach Leadership Team for a potluck supper on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:00 in the Coke Activities Room. There will be a brief meeting to hear about new and ongoing service opportunities. All are welcome!

Sunday, Feb. 5 at 10:00 in the Parlor or Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10:00 in the Bishop Moore Chapel. Members of the five co-ops that make the beautiful embroidered products will be combining into one social enterprise as soon as the Honduran government finalizes approval of their application. We will be doing workshops,

exercises, games and more to help the women develop trust in each other and a working relationship that makes them a strong team. We will focus on helping each individual recognize her talents and strengths she brings to the group effort and what her contribution is to the success of the whole.

Jubilee Park and Community Center offers multiple ways for you to volunteer on a regular and on-going basis with their tutoring and after-school programs. From helping in the Head Start programs to tutoring at O.M. Roberts Elementary School to serving during Jubilee Park’s after-school programs, you can make a difference in the lives of children living in the Jubilee Park neighborhood. Starting this month, Saint Michael and All Angels has a volunteer interest form on our website to help connect parishioners to volunteer opportunities at Jubilee Park. When you complete the form, your information is emailed directly to Jubilee Park and Community Center’s Volunteer Coordinator, Ovidia Amaya, to help you get started with volunteering at Jubilee Park and Community Center. Saint Michael’s Farmers Market Saint Michael’s Farmers Market Sets 2017 Season Saint Michael’s Farmers Market will open its 2017 season on Saturday, April 29 and be open on Saturdays through September 9. Following one its most successful seasons last year, the market will extend through the end of the year with monthly markets in October, November, and December. The market is an outreach ministry of Saint Michael and All Angels and receives no financial income. Support from the Friends of the Farmers Market helps defray the costs of its operation. The Church and the market committee express their appreciation to the Friends who generously gave in 2016 to support this ministry. Children and Family Ministry Children Collecting for North Dallas Shared Ministries As part of North Dallas Shared Ministries Month our children’s Sunday School Classes (kindergarten – 5th grade) are collecting non-perishable food items. On Sunday, February 19, Family Day of Service, the donations will be taken to the warehouse and families will stock the North Dallas Shared Ministries shelves. Youth Ministry Youth Get Rooted in Faith at Winter Retreat Seventeen youth, grades six through 12, spent two nights at Camp All Saints north of Dallas ropeswinging, craft-making, lip-syncing, rain-avoiding and community-building at the Youth Ministry’s Winter Retreat The Rev. Bill Murray and Youth Director Lauren Wainwright led the weekend with help from Interns Daniel Stanelle and Patricia Hale-Seidler, plus volunteers Kyle Moore and Maddie Webb. The theme for the weekend was “Rooted.” The group spent the time talking about planting seeds and roots in ministry and in life. They studied the parables of the sower, the fig tree, and the mustard seed. Julia Peters, high school junior, said the scavenger hunt activity was her favorite. “I also really liked the theme “Rooted.” We read Bible stories in small groups about what it means to be rooted to God.”

The group closed the weekend with Eucharist on Sunday morning before they rode the bus back to Saint Michael.

Bolivia Mission Trip Parent/Participant Meeting - February 13 A meeting for parents and youth participating in the trip to the Amistad Mission in Bolivia will take place on Monday evening February 13 at 6:00 in the Youth Center. The mission trip will leave July 24 and return August 1. We will discuss requirements for the trip including necessary vaccinations, a packing list, and schedules. It is important to make every effort to attend this meeting.

For Your Information Yes, everyone is invited, but not everyone chooses to join. We all know friends and neighbors – even members of this church – who simply visit church, attending at their convenience. Most often they expect to get something out of the experience but are not interested (at least not yet) in what they can contribute. And who can blame them? Our world teaches us how to be expert consumers. Without a foundation in the Gospel, we leave our identities up to the formation of the world, and the world is a powerful teacher. In almost every experience, we are taught that WE should be the most special, most important thing in our lives. Naturally, we should prioritize what we get out of church, rather than what we give. That’s how we’re supposed to function, right? But that’s not the message we hear from Jesus. Rather than putting ourselves first, concerned with only what we get out of our experiences, Jesus reminds us that we are created by God, loved by God first, and we are called to reflect that divine love to our neighbors as ourselves. We have been made by God to love one another, to support one another, to give ourselves to one another, and all because God gave everything to us, first. This is a powerful truth, and a truth that is revealed in Christ. Therein lies the difference between belonging to a church community and simply attending. Belonging means that we know the vision of God, understand the invitation of Christ, and commit to walking in love with one another in the power of the Holy Spirit. That commitment to membership, to belonging to one another in Christian community, is a responsibility that will brings us closer to God. Growing closer to God and uncovering the profound depth of love that is Jesus Christ is truly the greatest privilege in the world. So there you have it: a simple message to you as we walk with Christ together at Saint Michael, as well as a challenge to help others find the truth here, too. God made you and God loves you, just as you are. But God loves you enough not to let you stay there. Jesus came to show us how we can live in the kingdom of heaven right now, and that invitation is for every single person. I want you to respond, to commit, because I want all of us to continue to discover the incredible power of God’s perfect, life-changing love. We can do more than idly sit back and consume, we can truly belong to this community. We can give to and receive from one another the power of Christ, and in doing so, realize the amazing,

transformative power of love. All are welcome to belong to this amazing community, because membership truly does have its privileges.
