I Believe in Angels is a partnership between Saint Michael and Jubilee Park and Community Center. Parishioners sponsor angels (children and seniors) and donate Christmas gifts which will be wrapped and distributed to families. Throughout December, volunteers will be needed to sort, process, and wrap gifts, bake cookies, and distribute gifts to families.

Incense will be used during this service.

The Word of God Scheidemann served as organist at St. Catherine’s Church in Hamburg, Germany. The four main churches in Hamburg shared a common choir, the Stadtkantorei. Since the choir was able to serve in only one church at a time, organists in the other churches played arrangements of the motet for the day in its customary place in the liturgy. This need led the organists to compose so-called motet intabulations. Through this practice, motet intabulations gradually became a standard genre within organ literature and were no longer merely transcriptions of vocal music. At St. Katharinen, Scheidemann applied his creativity and compositional technique to the task of arranging motets for the organ. Rather than simply following the motet’s vocal parts, the organist would improvise a more elaborate keyboard setting, including fast runs and keyboard figurations.

Malcolm Archer is Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, where he trains and conducts the Quiristers and Chapel Choir and teaches organ in the College. He has enjoyed a distinguished career in cathedral music, which has taken him to posts at Norwich, Bristol, and Wells Cathedrals, and then Director of Music at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. “At the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners” was commissioned by Stephen Parsons for the opening of Bristol Cathedral Choir School as the first new choir school Academy in 2010. The work received its first performance in February of that year in Bristol Cathedral, sung by the School Choir and Cathedral Choir under Eiron Bailey, with Mark Lee at the organ. It sets a text by John Donne, the priest and poet who was the Dean at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London at the time of the Great Fire.

“The Lamb,” one of Tavener’s best-known choral works, is based on William Blake’s collection of poems Songs of Innocence. It was performed shortly after its composition at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in Kings College Chapel, Cambridge, on Christmas Eve, 1982. The service was broadcast to a large international TV and radio audience, and this gave the piece widespread exposure. Tavener masterfully uses the simple melody by inverting it (turning it upside-down) and reversing it (retrograde). What has started as a simple melody, quickly becomes complex. When the original melody and the modified melody are sung together by different voices in the choir, the result is a mirror effect where the lines cross.

Karg-Elert’s compositional style can be characterized as being late-Romantic with impressionistic and expressionistic tendencies. The festival begins with an Advent -themed Joy service with a performance by the Cherub Choir and includes the appearance of an extra special guest: St Nicholas! Following the service, all are invited to enjoy treats and refreshments, participate in a Christmas service project, and engage in a variety of Advent activities.

ADVENT RETREAT

December 9 | 9 a.m. – Noon Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. | Saint Michael Chapel Led by the Rev. Barkley Thompson This retreat will be facilitated by popular author and blogger the Rev. Barkley Thompson, rector of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. The retreat will focus on Barkley’s new book, “How Can We Know the Way?: Reflections on Belief, Salvation, and Eternal Life.” In the book, Barkley tackles issues that many Christians have traditionally been afraid to question. HEART OF GIVING

Tela, Honduras Mission For fourteen years, every February a group of Saint Michael missionaries returns to Tela, Honduras, to work and worship in partnership with Espiritu Santo, an Episcopal Church and day school. In the local barrios as well as at church, we work with parishioners and senior class members to provide more than 350 children with fluoride treatments, along with toothbrushes and toothpaste, to fit over 200 adults with reading glasses and sunglasses, and to engage more than 450 students in Christian education, which includes storytelling, singing, and crafts. Amistad, Bolivia Youth Houses Since 2000, Saint Michael has supported the orphaned children and adolescents of Villa Amistad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, helping to successfully bring them to independent living through life in transitional youth houses. During the pandemic, the adolescents were particularly affected by the isolation of quarantine. Our support will help them receive the educational, medical, spiritual, and emotional support they need to overcome their traumatic past.

TELA HONDURAS MISSION TRIP February 17 – 24, 2024

Saint Michael will send a team to Tela, Honduras February 17-24 of 2024, as we continue our longtime work in this community. The team provides fluoride treatments for children and vision screenings and reading glasses for seniors. The team also leads Christian Education in the barrios of Tela and at Espiritu Santos Episcopal School. The team may also do painting and/or construction projects. NORTH DALLAS SHARED MINISTRIES NDSM ADVENT CALENDAR FOOD DRIVE Grocery bags with the Advent calendar will be available at church entrances on November 26th. Please participate in the 24-day Advent journey and return food to the South entrance the first week of January. Parishioners will have the opportunity to learn about food insecurity, pray for the people impacted by hunger, and serve North Dallas Shared Ministries while counting down the days until Christmas.

STEPHEN C. FOSTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE December 3 – 19 Final drop-off date: December 19

This year we will be sharing Christmas joy with our friends at Stephen C. Foster Elementary through our first annual toy drive for the students grades PreK through 6th grade! We hope all Saint Michael parishioners will consider donating new toys (cost limit $35) toward our goal of collecting 500 toys. Families are especially encouraged to shop together so that our young members may bring a new toy to share with our neighbors. This drive is a joint effort of Mission and Outreach, Children’s and Family Ministries, and Saint Michael Episcopal School.
