the instagram body empowerment movement phenomenon

This month I celebrate four women who inspired me with fashion, but even more so with their spunky, full-of-life attitudes. These ladies all have something in common: they love themselves and they don’t need you to love them. And with that, I can say, I LOVE THEM. The minute we stop seeking outside approval is when our true beauty shines and the world starts to shine back for us. These ladies remind us all that style is unique, loving ourselves brings freedom, and there’s no better way to attain confidence than through inner peace. These four women truly embody what it means to honor our curves. It is a joy to share their stories and continue the cycle of inspiration. Look in the mirror right now, and see yourself with eyes of love. Quiet the parts of your mind seeking external approval and see these four ladies as inspiration to be the voice that says “I’m worth it.” You’re worth it. Right now. And you always will be. Own your curves, accept yourself, and never apologize for your beauty.

karynJohnson Toronto, ON, Canada instagram @killer_kurves Karyn, blogger of www. killerkurves.com, is a true inspiration to gals everywhere! Her beautiful, girly style and big smile have made her one of the go-to fashionistas in the Canadian plus-size community. Karyn says: “Honoring my curves means FREEDOM! It’s about loving every curve of your body, from the curve of your nose to the curve of your toes! It is about embracing who you are and NOT comparing yourself

to others or the ideals that the media tries to place inside your mind. It is about taking back what your body is supposed to be. Your body is a vessel for your beautiful soul; it is not something for others to judge, ridicule, or place rules upon. Don’t worry about “self-acceptance”; that term makes me cringe. What am am I accepting? That I am not the “ideal” body type? That I am not perfect? Forget that! I am perfect! I am free! I AM ME!”

amarinaNorris Toronto, ON, Canada instagram @MajorAmarina Amarina, an all-around rad chick and plus-size vintage retailer of www.ursamajor.ca, seen here in this photo by Yuli Scheidt, has an amazing style that is all her own. She says: “When I was a teenager I felt trapped in my plus-size body - I could never find the clothes I wanted to wear in my size (actually, I couldn’t find ANY plus-size apparel for teens) and I desperately wanted to express myself. It was as if I wasn’t allowed access to fashion and didn’t deserve

to look good because of my weight. I wasted so much time fantasizing about how much better it would be if I was thin that living the life I wanted was impossible. Now, I know that the hierarchy of body type is ridiculous and not okay, and that all bodies are unique and beautiful. I am so lucky to have my awesome fat body and I choose to honor my curves by being a kick ass person inside and out – and definitely by wearing clothes that express exactly who I am.”

Sparkle Tafao With over 16 years experience and an impressive resume, we were excited to learn more about Sparkle Tafao and get some summer beauty advice. Sparkle’s impressive work has appeared in both print and film, with a client roster that includes The Real Housewives of Orange County, Young & The Restless, and features in magazines such as People, Life & Style, Jet, Ebony and Good Housekeeping. Sparkle is currently featured in a national commercial for Stelara with one of Americas Next Top Models Cari Dee English. Sparkle started her career as a licensed esthetician but it didn’t take long for her to realize her passion for makeup, and we are glad she did! Sparkle has some great tips on how to embrace this summers makeup trends. SUMMER 2014 \ PG24 \ WWW.SKORCHMAG.COM

skorch beauty Q: How do you define your style of artistry? A: I define my makeup style as clean, defined beauty with an edge. I am a perfectionist. When I do makeup on a client my main objective is to capture their natural beauty. That’s where I think my background in aesthetics comes into play. Q: What inspired you to get into the beauty industry and did you always want to be a makeup artist? A: I can vividly recall as a child being drawn to all things beautiful in architecture, nature and interior design. I love the beautiful things in life. There’s a peace of mind I always felt surrounded by beautiful things. It’s that instinct that led me to become an esthetician. The best part of doing that job to me was the makeup. The transformative aspect of makeup always reminds me of a butterfly. They start off as a caterpillar but the metamorphic change is awesome. Ysl has a new lip product called Kiss and Blush that works on your cheeks. I love this product. Dior has a universal brow that has a brush on one end and matches almost every skin tone, and there’s so many mascaras that are amazing. I love Diorshow over curl. Q: What summer beauty trend are you looking forward to most? A: The warmth of skin and the fun you can have with shimmer, glow and bronzer. Skin looks so healthy and alive during the summer. I am also in love with the color play with turquoise and coral. Q. How can one incorporate the upcoming summer beauty trends into their current beauty regimen without spending a fortune? A. chunky girl comics by NICHOLE ALEX

Chunky Girl Comics is a small, independent organization based in Stockton, California created and conceived by Marisa Garcia. Marisa, is the creative mind behind the Heavy Response Unit and Chunky Girl Comics’ other creative projects. She is a lover of comic art, both new and classic and after a few years of toying around with the idea of starting her own comic, it was in 2011 that Chunky Girl Comics was born. Chunky Girl Comics is breaking down barriers and introducing the world of comics to a group of ladies with curves in all of the right places that are determined to break the standards of what a typical superhero should look like.

Marisa Garcia Owner and creator of Chunky Girl Comics

The Heavy Response Unit storyline follows four friends who go from being happy, well adjusted, overweight women in Northern California to having to fight for equality when it essentially becomes illegal to be overweight in America.

SUMMER 2014 \ PG30 \ WWW.SKORCHMAG.COM

skorch spotlight Q: The ladies of Chunky Girl Comics are different than the typical superheroes you find in comic books. What message are you trying to send with the comic and what is it that these fiercely curvy superheroes are fighting against? The characters are definitely different than any you have ever seen before and that was the point. I wanted to create characters that resembled women that we all see in our everyday lives. The women in traditional comics are undoubtedly beautiful and powerful. And no matter what size they are, it’s great to see women in powerful, leading roles, however their proportions are often unrealistic and I don’t know about you, but there is no one in my life that looks like Wonder Woman! So I modeled my characters after different body types of the women that I encounter on a daily basis, including myself. All women can be strong and leading women, and size has nothing to do with that. In the world of the Heavy Re-

sponse Unit, Rosie, Candy, Sweet Pea and Sage are your average group of friends. They work, date and have normal lives. But suddenly the world of fashion, entertainment and the media is taken over by an evil woman named Aurora, who vows that she will rid the world of overweight women. It essentially becomes “illegal” to be overweight and women who are larger than a size 6, are made to feel like second class citizens. But the girls get pushed to their limits and they decide that Aurora and her team of evil followers have to go! The Heavy Response Unit is born and the battle begins. Q: What is your role with chunky girls comics, both as the real you, and the character you portray in the comic? Chunky Girl Comics is my baby. It has been an idea in my head for a rather long time but it wasn’t until 2011 that I really decided to make moves and get the stories written and characters on the page. I do all of the writing, the story lines, the scripts and storyboards. The characters live in my brain and

is a publication to celebrate our bodies, without limits, boundaries, and nothing but loving fashion. For all those who read the news know what is going on in my country Venezuela. I was wondering: what can I write about being in the middle of a civil war? What fun and fashion is possible when all what you see and hear around you is tear gas, bullets, military all over the streets, repression, dead friends, and the list goes on… Tiffany our Editor in Chief told me in one sentence “Jen, people need a reality check, I want you to share with us what is going on and what are you going trough.” That was enough for me. know why pretty much I´ve been in silence during the recent weeks. It all started on February 12th the day we celebrate the youth day with a very innocent and peaceful march, students from all over the country asking to our current President Nicolás Maduro to seek solutions to all the chaos and drama going on in the country. We are the fifth most insecure country on the planet, no medicines, no food, no toilet paper, “No” is a very common word you can hear in Venezuela for everything and anything. This same day, the National Guard started to repress the people to not march or protest at all, since then everything has been pretty much like a snowball. What started as a march, an innocent, pure and nothing to hide march is now a civil war. The government has its own police to do the dirty jobs called SEBIN, they are

One of my best friends is in the most dangerous jail of the country just for being the lawyer of 130 students jailed for protesting without any other argument than that. Even for us is hard to understand, is much harder trying to explain to all of you this whole thing. Right now students and young people as me are camping on different places of the country as a protest, to be heard by the international community, peacefully, but so far some days it feels like it has been in vain. I´m camping at the United Nations door camping with more than 300 other students and young people, so far United Nations as/or any other organization has said nothing about Venezuela, the violence and horror we are going through, the days go by and the crisis go deeper and deeper.
