Here at the magazine office, our interns have done more than the typical grunt work. No grabbing coffee or sitting at the copy machine – they have been on the front lines, out at events, and behind their computer screens to help run this dog and pony show. Unfortunately, some of our faithful have to return to the classroom for the fall semester, but before we say goodbye, we wanted to give our workers a chance to speak their minds. Remember the yearbook dedications in high school? Yeah, this is kinda like that, only you can get away with dropping an f-bomb without having to hit detention. To our interns, thank you for busting your ass this summer. The cap and gown aren’t too far away...neither are the student loan payments - Ramon Gonzales This summer I was able to experience life as a magazine schlub and attend awesome events - Beats daytime television. - Rachel Goldstein I love the free food and alcohol. Who cares about the cool people I’ve met - just feed me Seymour :P – Angela Jugon After learning the glorious, most best invention of how to invite multiple friends to events, gaining 30 lbs from “pizza Mondays”, and receiving a few perks that made you feel pretty cool, this internship ended better then I thought. Never underestimate the cheesy ending, because the best part of it all was building relationships with the other interns as we gossiped in our dark dusty office. - Lesley Marin

This summer has been filled with a wide range of results: whether it was mastering all social media networks, gaining a little extra weight due to pizza Mondays and the supply of beer in the office and becoming a designer when it comes to fanning out all the promo materials at events. - Maritza Guerrero I enjoyed my internship this summer because i got to work with amazing interns and met a lot of interesting and awesome people. Although that Ramon dude is kind of an asshole. - Janessa Gray

Suck it, Wells Fargo! A California judge has ordered Hell’s Cargo to give $203 million in restitution to its clients who have been snowballed by overdraft charges. Although this is a pittance compared to the $1.8 BILLION it collected from 2005-2007 it is a start. Hope you didn’t spend it all on corporate vacation incentives.

Web wolf in sheep’s clothing. Google and Verizon drafted a proposal for Congress which outlined ways to keep internet service providers from unfairly limiting/ omitting content from their competitors. Isn’t that nice? Not really. They failed to address these same issues in web browsing from wireless phones. I wonder why… Gay Rights in Mexico City \\ Mosque At Ground Zero

While California continues the start again/stop again process of legalizing gay marriage, Mexico City has made it very clear that they have no issue with homosexuals exchanging vows and even adopting children together. Last month a Mexican Supreme Court ruled that all 31 states must recognize same-sex marriage performed in the capital of Mexico City with a vote of 9-2. The law that initially passed in March of this year was upheld in the vote and extends the same tax, child, and property benefits of traditional married couples. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has announced plans to send 224 National Guard troops to help “secure” the CaliforniaMexico border. He calls this, “only the beginning.” Drugs or immigration? Disgraced former governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich was found guilty on only one of his 24 corruption charges last month. The least of the charges, a jury convicted Blagojevich of lying to federal agents. He is accused of trying to sell the seat President Obama occupied on the state Senate along with a whole list of charges that carry some 20-year sentences. Prosecutors have vowed to

retry the case. The debate continues as plans to build a Mosque near Ground Zero in Manhattan move forward. Conservatives like Sarah Palin and former House speaker Newt Gingrich have been very vocal in their opposition to the idea. Gingrich has even gone as far as comparing the construction of the Mosque near Ground Zero, to putting Nazi imagery near Holocaust memorial sites. China has jockeyed into second place edging out Japan to become the world’s second largest economy. According to the Bloomberg Report, Japan’s second fiscal quarter GDP totaled 1.288 Trillion, while China reached 1.337 Trillion. According to the same report, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. chief economist Jim O’Neill projects that the Chinese economy will replace the US in 2027 as the largest in the world. After the massive government intervention for General Motors, the company has announced plans to begin selling shares to the public once again in an effort to shed government ownership. While there is yet to be any word on how many shares will be made available and what the cost will be per, the stock is expected to be available to purchase by October of 2010<

Newsweek for sale at The Dollar Tree? 92 year old Sidney Harman (a successful business man, past politician, and philanthropist) bought the weekly magazine for a buck and inherited $71 million in ‘obligations’ (ahem, debt). Facebook won’t get you a raise. Productivity declined 0.9% last quarter according to the Labor Department. So what? Increases in production usually lead to increases in wages and therefore increase in standard of living. And the opposite is true too. So sign off for a few months and ask for a raise or update your status to “Self-defeating.”

Home buyers inveigled by the Houdini tax credit. Thanks to the $8,000 federal tax credit offered to homebuyers in California, making it possible for folks on the bubble to buy in the Golden State, home prices in LA, San Diego and San Fran increased by an average of 6.2%. On a $500,000 house that is an increase of $31,000. Buzzkill.

Jello shots, move over.

words by Ramon Gonzales photo by Calvin Denny

The honest truth is that Hollywood is never short on the “overcoming adversity” sort of story. In the case of Gil Medina, however, there is an added caveat that makes his story worth the listen. Medina didn’t hope for a door to open, he climbed in the living room window. “I was a concert promoter and transitioned into a club owner. I was promoting hip-hop music in Salt Lake City. My first show was Vanilla Ice if you could believe it.” Medina’s background in hip-hop would serve to his advantage as he forged a friendship with none other than Ice Cube. A visit to the set of “Friday” would prove instrumental in how Medina’s professional life would forever change. “Cube told me, ‘you can do this. Study it. Learn it.’ So I did. I learned how to write a proper screenplay and got familiar with every aspect of the industry.” A combination of sincere passion, consistent networking, and relationship building would ultimately lead to Medina finding a partner in the most unexpected place. “First and foremost, I am a fan of Danny Trejo. After his part in “Heat” I was like, ‘that’s my guy man.’ So when we met I made sure to tell him how big of a fan I was. We ended up becoming really good friends and creatively coming together well.” Forging a business partnership with Danny, Medina started working on an idea in 2005 that he felt was tailor made for Trejo. “Did you know that Stallone is trying to remake “Death Wish” (Charles Bronson franchise) – I mean c’mon, are you gonna believe that? Trejo is the next Bronson. That’s kind of where “Vengeance” took shape.” Admittedly taking on every job associated with the production of a film, from lighting to catering, Medina took his knowledge and

There’s a new treat in town. The set his sights on crafting a new, modern day, working class hero. He began writing the script for “Danny Trejo’s:Vengeance.” The first in what is likely to be a franchise of films (part two is already written) Danny Trejo loses his family, is falsely convicted of a crime, and takes on the timeless tale of the everyday man pushed to his limit, hellbent on hurting those that stole from him. An obvious homage to old school bravado of OG tough guys like Bronson, Eastwood, hell even Wayne, “Danny Trejo’s Vengeance” not only boasts a stellar cast for an independent film (Jason Mewes, 50 Cent, Donal Logue), but Medina has set in motion a new marketing plan that likely has major film companies worried, whispering, and maybe even a little pissed. “Vengeance is going to have a theatrical release but once it hits Redbox, Blockbuster, and other rental outlets, we are going to give fans the film for free.” Already establishing www.VengeanceArmy.com, as a forum for fans, the film will be available to own for free, a move Medina says is solely about giving to the fans. “Man, I would be a door to door movie salesman. I would sell that shit on the side of the freeway. That’s how much I love doing this. We are proud of this film and we want to make sure we share it with as many people as we can. This is a new way to market a film, but we know that people just don’t have money right now. Doesn’t mean we are going to stop making good films for them to enjoy. Danny Trejo’s Vengeance will be the start of something new in the film industry”

Easily one of the most inventive forms of brand integration period, the famed Backstage Artist Lounge, created by CEO Christina Martin, embraces the notion that life is just “one big never-ending tour.” The idea began through pure good fortune and endless determination in crafting an unrivaled, competitive approach to business. Thanks to the managers, promoters, bands, and hundreds of brands around the globe that have sponsored BAL’s tour dates, Martin crafted success. The Lounge’s continuous contributions to charities, the companies who sponsor them and the musicians themselves, are what drive the BAL to keep on, pun intended, truckin’. Since 2007, the Lounge has been sought after to construct several exclusive backstage environments. Since first touring with Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Sick Puppies, Seether, and Saliva for Pointfest (largest St. Louis radio festival), BAL has traveled through the Cayman Islands on VH1’s Best Cruise Ever, attended Rock on the Range, signed the Crue Fest contract, rode on their own tour bus, and is even arranging to journey to Europe in 2011 to take part in several major European festivals. With sponsor brands such as Aurora, Neuro Drinks, Popsi Lingerie, Sportie LA, Kabang Energy Candy, Anama, Diamond Amps, Firefly, CREAM (a flavored alcohol-infused whipped cream), and Remetee, bands are treated to everything, including but not limited to, instruments, jewelry, electronics, food & beverage, novelty products, games, footwear, and clothing (including clean underwear by designers like 69 Slam). No one could do what we have done. If we had any competitors, we would squash them. We maintain an extremely competitive approach to business, obviously. We are extremely loyal to our business partners and our sponsors. We champion our sponsors over their competitors, and when a company refuses to sponsor, we reach out to their competitors. Cartagena, Colombia It’s rep is imposing, but the feel is Intimate You should ignore everything and anything stereotypical you have ever heard about Colombia. In Cartagena, what you’ll discover is the complete opposite of what most people generally perceive and a fair portion of what they do in the slums or in a cheap motel room. Truth can be stranger than fiction. It has emerged as a dazzling beautiful city, with translucent glass-like water and imposing buildings that share the street with the night. The core of this daunting World Heritage site is saturated in color and far from the days of Pablo Escobar. If there was ever a place competent of blending the latest and the ancient, this is where it exists. It’s Caribbean shores and cool sea breezes have made this tropical city buoyant; breathing with life. Its magic has been an important inspiration for one of the most imaginative writers of the modern era, Gabriel García Márquez. While transforming notable structures into modish

boutique hotels, they’ve made sure not to forfeit the charisma that keeps on drawing in refined wanderers and comfortable Latin American and European socialites. Fancy fusion restaurants, Old World-style plazas and guitar players can be seen if you were to stroll through the cobblestone alleyways. Enjoy the sights without your sunglasses on and everything looks so vivid, so clarified. With the long history of cocaine-promoted havoc in the past, this seaside gem is coming back with retribution. Service, Scarcity and Scandal If you’re looking to spend an afternoon on the beach in the wards of Bocagrande be aware that barmen and fruit-sellers will attempt to provide you with a ready supply of “chicas” and cocaine. Pre-pago (prepaid) women can be found if you locate the correct pimp. These women, typically from the University, will

accompany tourists as escorts and spend time with them in restaurants, on the beach and between the sheets. Sex is everything. People from all countries and all walks of life come to this tempting location merely for sex. It does not take long as a tourist in Cartagena to get a sense of what is offered. Several cheap hotels, open 24 hours-a-day can be found no more than a block away from bars and clubs that promote young girls to do strip teases for older men. Since the cocaine overdose of Yesid Torres, a 15-year old boy, some light has been shed upon this famed tourist town and the sex trade behind its charm. Allegedly, 72-year old Paolo Pravisani contracted Yesid several months before his overdose as “domestic help,” along with quite a few other adolescents. During a police investigation it was established that Pravisanis’ “help” were to perform

sexual acts with each other. These acts were recorded and later found beside drugs and alcohol. Although these appear to be cruel and degrading circumstances, sex is a considerable part of life within such impoverished areas. Some families within these communities even encourage their children to involve themselves in the sex trade for extra money. From Cartagena’s hilltop church, the view reveals the bleak reality of life for the greater part of this city’s population. The slums here are some of the largest and most deprived in all of Colombia. High levels of drug-related crime keep this part of the city involved in the ongoing civil conflict and unrest surrounding it. Colombia’s Finest All Colombians are prepared and eager to point out that the immeasurable majority of the cocaine produced in their country is exported. It’s quite the phenomenon. Rumor has it (research proves it) that they aren’t the ones using, we are. Colombia is the biggest producer of cocaine, controlling some 80% of the world market. It is also the third-largest grower of marijuana. Residents intend on detaching the iniquitous label this place earned when it was

managed by Escobar and the drug cartels in the 80s and 90s. “It’s great for those who sell it, but it’s not for those who use it.” That’s true with any drug. Back when basuco was more prevalent, it was sold for a small price and hastily became more popular than hittin’ the peace pipe in some cities. Thousands of people were addicted and thousands more continue to suffer due to the nervous disorders brought on by the crack-like drug. It does more than distort the mind and also contains such chemicals as gasoline and sulfuric acid. Highly contaminated and addictive! Having once been considered the country notorious for bloodshed and the most dangerous in the world, Colombia has employed security improvements over the last half-decade to ensure that they emerge from their unruly past. Twenty-five cent cups of sweet, black coffee (Tinto) are offered by vendors everywhere. Dance festivals and beauty pageants keep this place animated long after dark. Sitting alongside disparities, 300-year-old Spanish buildings and walls line the city and grab out to your attention as they grace you with their presence. The belle of the ball. Lively metropolises such as Medellin and Bogota are similar to this part of the world. It has everything large cities have without the attitude in-between. Performing arts have always been a big part of Cartagena’s cultural life. With more than 100 companies of theater and traditional/contemporary dancing, opera and ballet companies scouting out potential candidates often visit this place. savannah. Bocagrande (Big Mouth) is a sought after locale where contestants of the Miss Colombia Pageant go to be seen during festival. This vicinity also boasts many shops, nightclubs, art galleries, spectacular sea walks, hotels, and restaurants. It is positioned between Cartagena Bay and the Caribbean Sea and its particular allure that has made this a popular destination for tourists, other than the beaches, is the nightlife in and around Avenida San Martin. One of the most evocative neighborhoods in all of Cartagena would have to be Getsemani. Parque Centenario (Centenary Park) used to house African slaves and is now a place commemoration. Within the park there is a local police station, the Third Order Church, Gila monsters, a sloth, and a few monkeys. Everybody Chivas! If it isn’t in your nature to party, Cartagena may change your mind. The party scene here is well developed and has a little something for just about everyone. Much of the nightlife is located on Calle de Arsenal, in the Getsemaní neighborhood, but there are also numerous other options throughout this inner walled city. Chivas (party) buses will charge you $20, tour you around the city and feed you rum-and-cokes all night to aid in getting the party started. for a fried Colombian snack. Other popular bars include La Carbonera and Babar, both with plenty of cocktails and salsa, electronic and reggae music to keep you diverted. The section near the beach known as La Escollera includes more than just a few pubs and bars that remain open far after 3 a.m. There’s no waiting in these rooms. Instead you spin yourself around on bar stools. The dim light permits you to perceive what it is like to be awake or alive when dawn arrives. As you stagger through the quarters of the city, an assortment of people are determined to earn a little cash by doing fire tricks and suggesting you buy their souvenirs and flowers. Many establishments in Old Town charge relatively high cover fees and if that’s outside of your budget you can always opt for open-air cafes. Whether you decide to just post up on the beach and enjoy a cocktail or throw yourself into movement on the dance floor, the pleasant atmosphere of the night allows you to admire the majesty of this seaside location - no matter your fancy. The Clock’s Door You may only be familiar with this city from the Family Guy episode “Barely Legal” or because it is the hometown of the professional baseball player Orlando Cabrera. The fact of the matter is, you should be acquainted with it. Many travel to this port city

and rave about it upon their return. Will you be one of these people? Regardless of all its woes – social, political, and economic, it still remains an enthralling country to visit. Whether you come to gorge on the many fine restaurants, hotels, or to discover its 500 years of history, you’re bound to notice how appealing and unforgettable this place is. A city full of romance, contradictions, and popular beaches. Don’t forget to avoid any unwanted solicitations and by all means, please take part in any that suit your needs. But if you positively don’t want to be influenced into buying anything then steer clear of making any eye contact or else you’ll end up with a souvenir or two. Shadows will graze alongside the city walls, creeping further down as the day gradually calls it a rest. One cannot look hard enough out into the blue. The ocean wind will dictate which direction your whispers will travel but unless you veer off the beaten path, you shouldn’t face any problems. Metaphors ranging from what’s to come or what came before. It is apparent that all your procrastination has led you astray.

The actor’s daughter was inspired by the likes of Kim Kardashian and other B-list celebrities who “earned” their fame by accidental sex tapes, and hopes that her own nudie film will produce the same results. She was cited as saying, “The first time is really nerve racking ... but, I have a lot of at-home experience.” Say what?

Machete

Release Date : Sept. 3, 2010 Studio : 20th Century Fox Danny Trejo is an ex-Federale who specializes in (guess) bladed weapons. Hell, yes, I’m convinced. After ending up in Texas to look for work, Machete is approached by Michael Benz, a local businessman, to kill Senator McLaughlin, played by Robert De Niro. The price? $150,000.The twist? When Machete is about to kill the Senator, he is double-crossed by Benz, nearly killed, and then teams up with a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent (played by Jessica Alba) and a vigilante priest named Padre (Cheech Marion) who specializes in shotguns. Rodriguez is the master of violent, pulp-action, ironic schlock but has the eye of an artist. His movies reflect this dedication, and Machete is going to be a violent, guilty, brutal joy to behold.

I’m Still Here Release Date: September 10 Studio: Magnolia Pictures A documentary by Casey Affleck, following a year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix as he retires from acting, goes into seclusion, and then announces that he is pursuing a new career as a hip hop musician. WTF? This all sounds like a publicity stunt worthy of Andy Kaufman, or some sort of cutting edge faux-documentary even more arcane in its employment than Borat. This will either be a sleeper hit, a cult favorite, or the next Big Thing. I’m not going to watch it, though.

The Virginity Hit Release Date: November 10 Studio: Columbia Pictures Four guys team up to try to lose their virginity. Wait, that sounds bad. It’s an updated version of the plot of American Pie, with a catch: the guys are documenting the whole event with a video camera. Teen sex comedies never stop because we all have laughed, suffered and experienced the embarrassing pain of growing up and confronting the truths of sexuality. This comedy will be no less formidable than previous works all the way back to Porky’s, but it will also be as original.

The Town Release Date : September 7th Studio : Warner Bros Four bank robbers from Massachusetts are making money and evading the FBI, but it’s only a matter of time. Doug MacRay (Affleck) falls for the manager of another bank named Claire (Rebecca Hall) while an F.B.I. agent played by Jon Hamm is following all of them. I don’t know about you, but I think this is just an east coast version of Heat. Well, that was a damn good movie, and I wouldn’t mind seeing something similar, but those are some mighty big boots, Mr. Affleck. Attempt to fill them at your own peril.

Devil Release Date : September 17th Studio : Devil It’s September, which means it’s nearly Halloween, so about a movie about the freakin’ Devil? Well, when you are M. Night Shyamalan, and your last movie sucked so bad people are comparing it to Roman Polanski’s Pirates, you’d better direct your ass out of the ditch you put it in by making Devil. Four strangers find themselves on an elevator that’s stuck and realize one of them is Satan. Hell, that happens to me all the time, but I’m all out of Paxil. What’s this movie’s excuse?

The title of this documentary is the only luminous part of the whole endeavor. Until the Light Takes Us is an attempt to give the church burning, band mate killing, anti-semitic, and all around prejudicial stand-for-little zeitgeists of the Norwegian Black Metal movement a chance to explain themselves, their crimes, and their remorselessness for what they have done and destroyed. Rather than challenge the Black Metal ethos, the filmmakers succumb to the pathos of the defendants. Yucky.

After being pushed back a few times, this album is here at last, and N.E.R.D. has taken a different direction. Nothing focuses less on the music and more about the message, drifting from the hip-hop genre and heading into the dance and funk arena. Decent, but not altogether spectacular. Considering these guys flourish as producers - expect lots of board work and health electronics.

Departing from The Killers style, Brandon Flowers’ solo album, Flamingo, is so far from the band’s style that even his voice sounds different, atop a less electro, more indie music style. With an appearance from Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame, Killers fans or otherwise should give this record a chance and pardon the cliched frontman going solo storyline.

If you don’t listen to Of Montreal yet, now – 10 albums deep – is as good a time as any. As always, Kevin Barnes and company deliver an album worthy of both dancing and asking “What the fuck did he just say?”, yet now leaning to the funky, R&B style. The band emerged from indie obscurity for a damn good reason, be sure to Get this!!!!

As soon as you listen to Deerhunter, you’ll realize that you don’t need to listen to anything else. With each subsequent album an improvement upon the last, Halcyon Digest is a necessary addition to your iTunes library. What more do you need than delicious shoegaze inspired riffs, poppy drums, and smooth vocals? Must have.

Halo: Reach GENRE: Sci-Fi Action/Adventure Systems: X Box 360

Bungie’s last foray into the world of the SPARTANS vs. the Covenant comes to a close with a prequel that depicts the epic battles that led to the start of the first chapter in the “Halo” saga. The color palette is grim and the environments are devoured by darkness. The sights and sounds of planet Reach, along with massive set pieces and epic gun battles, presents a game of considerable size and stature. Gameplay is varied, with dogfights in the middle of space and of course the infamous multiplayer mode. This is everything people have loved about the “Halo” series and more, encompassing all the finest elements into a concise package that never lets up from start to finish.

The first installment of “Dead Rising” brought Zack Snyder’s “Dawn of the Dead” setting – a mall – and coupled it with a photographer stuck right in the middle. It immediately resonated with gamers and the second installment ups the ante in the best manner possible. Before 500 zombies could fit the screen with no lag, but now 7,000 or so can make life a living hell for the new protagonist, Chuck Greene, who must wield any weapon possible to slay the zombies running about the Vegas-like, Fortune City. With co-op mode added, along with the ability to customize new weapons, “Dead Rising 2” is a game that sticks with you long after it’s over.

Gamers get the chance not only to play as one version of Spider Man, but four! Long story short: The Tablets of Order and Chaos are shattered while Spidey tries to foil a robbery. This upsets the balance of reality, so Spidey must rely on his four different counterparts to find the Tablet pieces and restore order. Drawing from the worlds of the Amazing, Noir, 2099 and Ultimate universes, each one has a distinct look and setting. With a healthy roster of villains and a story penned by Spider Man veteran, Dan Slott, the game offers a comic book game adaptation that has no equal.

games you love to hate: Clash of the Titans You would think at this juncture game developers looking to make a game based on a movie franchise would research “The Chronicles of Riddick” on a consistent basis, or “Goldeneye”. No, instead they stick their head in the sand and make deplorable titles such as this one. The movie was terrible, so this game is dead before it even starts up. The predictable – and poor – hack ‘n slash gameplay seems more like a chore than a rip-roarin’ good time. Shoddy voice acting and a piss-poor weapons upgrade system only add to the insanity. Avoid at all costs.

Mortal Kombat’s Return to Form When “Mortal Kombat 4” made the leap to 3D, the game jumped the shark. It limped through other impossibly bad incarnations, losing the charm and appeal that made it the arcade game that defined an entire generation of gamers, and introduced a slew of things for parents and activists to get pissed off about. Bada BINGer! Say Hello to Playboy Playmate : Brittany Binger

SM : You have done some TV with CSI and Kendra - what else is on deck for you? BB : Right now I’m staying very busy with my modeling career. Down the road I might try my hand at acting. I know it’s a tough business to break into. I’ve done a couple of commercials and have been taking acting lessons for a while now. I’m also going to start shooting for ‘Kendra’ season 3 this fall. It’s going to be a fun season! SM : Is being a Playboy Playmate really that big of a deal? BB : I guess when you look at the percentages you would have to say yes. Playboy gets tens of thousands of submissions every year of woman wanting to be the next centerfold. Playboy has a 99.9% turn down rate, so the odds of becoming a playmate are slim. When you look back over the women who have done Playboy, the list is pretty impressive. Even way back to the early years of the magazine you’ll find movie icons like Jane Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe who are now considered Hollywood royalty among the list of past playmates. SM : We read you had some issues with stalkers? BB : It’s a legal matter I can’t comment on right now. SM : What is it like being best friends with a reality TV star? Paparazzi and tabloids... BB : I don’t know if you could ever get used to the paparazzi following your every move once you step outside, but Kendra seems to handle it pretty well. I don’t get to see her as much as I used to with her living out east in Philly and me on the West coast. But we talk a lot and when we do visit, it’s no different than any other friends hanging out. We go out to eat, go to movies, just laid back stuff. She has been through a lot, most of it before I knew her, but the Kendra I know is one of the sweetest people you’d ever want to meet. She’s in a good place now and I’m very happy for her. SM : Realistically, what could the average guy say to you to win you over? BB : Realistically? Nothing. I am not that easily won over! Anyone can say lines but actions speak louder than words. I am very particular when it comes to men. I am not the girl who walks down the street and checks out guys. It’s like I have my blinders up. I don’t know if this sounds bad, but I have always waited to be approached. If I am, I don’t like a guy who tries too hard. It takes a while with me to become attracted to someone. I am very closed off. SM : Champagne and the VIP section or ice cream and a movie on the couch? BB : If you only knew how big of a homebody I was. I think my friends get tired of asking me to go out because I always decline. I love just being at home and relaxing rather than being at a big loud club. It’s fun every once in a while to go out, but being at home watching a movie never gets old.

His reputation precedes him the way lightning precedes thunder. His standing in the skate community is characterized by a profound respect from his peers that translates into a healthy mix of admiration and inspiration. He’s a lover not a fighter, but he’s also a fighter so don’t get any ideas. Magazine covers, countless awards, podium appearances, representation in video games and a laundry list of accolades have littered Chris Cole’s career. While the honors have never been unappreciated, Cole’s success isn’t measured by the kind of love he gets, but the kind of love he still gives to his profession. Chris Cole has become a dignified skater in the community because of the plethora of contests he has won and honors that have been bestowed upon him. Winning gold medals in both the X Games and the Gravity Games, winning first place in the 2010 Dew Cup, winning the Maloof Money Cup two years in a row, first place in the

34

SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

“Battle at the Berrics 2,” the list becomes redundant its so plentiful. In 1990 Thrasher magazine began the honor of naming one elite skater as Skater of the Year. Since then, there have only been two repeat winners, Danny Way in 1991 and 2004 and Cole in 2005 and 2009. But if you ask Cole, it’s just another day at the office. Cole grew up in Pennsylvania and started skating when he was eight years old and for two years he only skated on the curb in front of his house.“When you’re younger, it’s your whole entire life, Everything about your life is that hobby. You love it, you obsess over it and you have the time to do it.”Now a 28-year-old husband and father of two, Cole credits people like Christian Hosoi, Rodney Mullen, Daewon Song, Paul Rodriguez and all the Toy Machine and Zero videos like Thrill of it All and Mislead Youth for helping inspire him to be the best he can every day. “A

lot of people I look up to don’t even skate the way I skate, but that doesn’t matter,” Cole said. In 2005 when Cole won SOTY for the first time, he didn’t have his kids yet. Now he has a toddler son and a newborn daughter and still managed to win SOTY for the second time for 2009, but more importantly, continues to build his competitive drive. “The fact that I got skater of the year the first time, before I had children, was such a huge deal and a life changer,” Cole said. “Now that I have children and more responsibility it’s unreal being SOTY for the second time.”Even though he is the reigning SOTY Cole doesn’t see himself as a “big name skater”, just a skater who is trying to do his best.Out on tour he is ‘Chris Cole’ but at home he’s ‘Christopher Cole’. While Cole’s notoriety isn’t as weighty as skater/celebs like Bam Margera, Rob Dyrdek and even Ryan Scheckler, his name remains one of the industry’s most revered for a skill set that is damn near impossible to match. “I definitely don’t feel like someone big,” Cole said. “People think that we’re all stars and we do this super cool stuff. I definitely have lived quite the charmed life but I still do all the things that their dads do. I don’t drive some gnarly sick ass car,” Cole said. He gos on to describe his family friendly, compact car complete with cracked windshield and always in need of new brakes. Why has Cole become somewhat of a living legend? One of the biggest achievements for Cole was “Back to the Berg”. Known as the Wallenberg Four, the four-stair jump measures 6-feet tall and 18.5-feet long. Hundreds of onlookers came to watch amateur skaters and professional skaters alike try and clear the four-stair gap in this big trick contest. As Cole arrived to the Berg, he saw the mass of people that were there to support and witness this beast of a gap. Cole’s first attempt turned out to be a thrashing bail that makes people wince and cringe when they see it. He came down the crowded roll too fast and couldn’t land his 360, rolled and slammed the back of his head on the concrete giving him the certainty of a concussion. Cole immediately jumped to his feet and grabbed the back of his head to check for blood.

After realizing that he was not bleeding nor did he knock himself out, he figured he was “good to go” and went right back into it. His very next attempt he threw down his 360 and stuck it clean. The hundreds of people that gathered around to watch went absolutely insane. “If you want to do something bad enough, you just got to do it,” Cole said. At the end of the Zero, New Blood video, Cole was the first (documented) person to land a 360 flip off the Wallenberg Four. He attempted the 360 flip 68 times over a span of three hours. Cole remembers this being the worst toll over one trick.“I get beat down, it’s like my role,” Cole said. He would try the trick over and over after eating shit. In Zero’s “Strange World” video he did a backside 360 kickflip at the Carlsbad gap. Cole went to Carlsbad High 12 separate times, each time staying for two hours attempting that trick.“I feel like my role in skating is more than doing hard tricks,” Cole said. “It’s to be an example for those who are working for something.” With his future in mind Cole will not be taking a part in the 2010 X Games but is currently working on his website and a new Zero video called, Cold War. He will be defending his championship title in the 32-man S.K.A.T.E. tournament called the “Battle at the Berrics 3”. He will also be making appearances, this summer, with Dyrdek’s Street League as the battle between Cole and P-Rod is taken to the next level. No matter how small of a deal Cole tries to make himself out to be, he has etched his name as one of the best skaters to ever step foot on a deck without a reality show or celebrity notoriety. Part of it is his sheer ability, but respect on Cole’s level can only come with the kind of hustle his has proven to time and time again. When was the last time you tried ANYTHING 68 times?

MALOOF ADDS 1 MIL BONUS TO CONTEST Maloof Money Cup owner Joe Maloof is offering a $1 million dollar bonus to any skateboarder who can win four consecutive Money Cups. The third Money Cup wrapped up on Aug 8 in Orange County with Chris Cole taking his third win in a row. Cole who has so far already won over $300,000 in Maloof prizes, recently signed up to Rob Dyrdek’s newly assembled Street League, which will not allow him to compete in the fourth Maloof cup. Dyrdek expressed his obvious frustration with the rule saying in an official release “It’s crazy. I’m just so curious-is this a singular ploy to get Chris Cole?”

SHARK WEEK IS OVER BUT NOT FOR THE SHARKS. A surfer was attacked and killed in West Australia while surfing in Margaret River. Now identified by perthnow.com as 31-year-old Nicholas Edwards, reports say he was struck by the shark early on the morning of Tuesday, Aug 17, around 8:15 AM local time. According to reports, local resident Rob Alder was watching the surf from his veranda when he saw the man lose his board, then disappear under the surface. Apparently Nicholas was able to make it to the shore by himself, despite sustaining horrendous injuries. Eddie Kilgallon who tried saving the victim by holding “what was left of his leg together” with a tourniquet, reported that the victim’s leg was virtually ripped apart with parts of his thigh exposed and ripped open and his calf muscle torn to shreds. Sadly, the victim’s femoral artery was severed and he later succumbed to his injuries.

PALA RACEWAY TO HOT FIRST EVER NATIONAL RACE On September 11 Pala Raceway will host its first ever National race. This is a huge deal because this race also signifies the 12th and final stop of the 2010 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championships, giving SoCal fans the much-desired opportunity to see a pair of champions crowned for the first time since 2007.

METAL MULISHA STARTS SELLING PRODUCTS ON FACEBOOK Metal Mulisha is once again pushing the envelope and making history by becoming one of the first action sports brands in the industry to begin selling products through its Facebook fan page. Selling and buying apparel through Facebook is still a pretty foreign thing to most folks however; it could catch on pretty quickly. At the urging of Mulisha’s head of Digital Marketing, Ryan Cropley, the company teamed up with Alvenda, the technology company responsible for launching the Facebook-selling platform to other retailers like Best Buy and Delta Airlines, and began the new initiative

Slayer

In case you’re just coming out of a long coma, let us be the ones to point out that the big four of thrash metal have recently shared the stage and are planning on doing it again in the near future. The most talked about collaboration in recent metal history occurred earlier this summer in Europe and there’s reason to expect a possible tour with Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax and Metallica here in the states. While the four bands are often cited as being the originators of modern metal music, there’s only one group among the four that didn’t change its style on at least an album or two to appease the status quo; one band that didn’t see the lead singer kicked out or see the lead singer kick the rest of the band out; one band that didn’t need to see a shrink. Slayer.

Even if some fans have grown up and moved on over the years, rest assured there’s always a new generation primed and ready to take their place among the legions of devoted Slayerites. “We’ve always catered to the little deviant fucks,” said guitarist Kerry King, explaining the reason behind Slayer’s devoted fanbase. Back in the day, the band was an easy and constant target of the PMRC due to its perceivably wicked lyrics and caustic imagery displayed on the album covers. While there’ll always be those who complain about your message, you can’t get away with too much musical oppression in our society, King says, after all, it is the land of the free. “I think that’s part of the awesomeness of being in America – you pretty much can say what you want. People like the PMRC tried ages ago and the only thing they succeeded in doing was putting a warning label on an album, which probably sells more records, which we all know,” he said. “The main message of anything I’ve ever written at the end of the day is – think for yourself. Be a free thinker. Don’t think things because your friends think it. Don’t think things because your family’s forced these things on you. By the time you’re an adult, you’ve got the right to make up your own mind.” Until everyone in the world finds a way to hold hands at the same time and sing “Kumbayah,” in perfect harmony, there will be plenty of ugly inspirations for Slayer’s lyrics, especially regarding politics. Right now, watching Republicans and Democrats follow their political party’s agendas like brainwashed members of religious cults is enough to keep ideas flowing for a long time. “That’s really why nothing gets solved because one opinion cancels out the other opinion,” said King of the state of Republicans and Democrats. “They just fight, which is pretty much all I see. What’s the solution to that? Got me. Now, they’ve got the Republican out of the presidency because they thought he did a shitty job and now Obama’s there and nothing’s changed. Unemployment’s huge. It’s just the next guy coming in with all these ‘I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna do that,’ and he gets in office and realizes he can’t so then when he’s been in there four years or eight years, everyone thinks he’s done a bad job. Then they say ‘We need a fuckin’ Republican in there.’ It’s just nuts. That’s the kind of thing that gives me endless musical ideas.” If you bring up the four horsemen of thrash metal, you can’t help but think of the constant soap operas generated by certain musicians throughout the years. In fact, out of the four bands, Anthrax seems to have been the only one to stay out of the drama between the rest of them. Consider them the Switzerland of the Big Four Cold War. Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine has been involved in feuds with his old mates in Metallica, as well as King and Slayer, who also haven’t gotten along all that well with Metallica over the decades. When the four bands got together earlier this summer in Europe, it was all good, according to King. It’s true that certain musicians didn’t care for one another since the band’s put thrash on the map in the mid-‘80s, but a lot of the drama was the result of people’s perceptions based on the media. “All (fans) know is what’s in press and press isn’t always correct,” said King. “Everybody was stoked to be there (at the reunion) and everybody had a great fuckin’ time. Every time I saw James and Lars, I said ‘Dude, let’s take this everywhere. Don’t jip the people in western Europe and Australia and South America and North America to only see it in a theater.’ It’s better than nothing but it’s not like being there. I think everybody’s on the same page and

40

• SKINNIEMAGAZINE.COM

everybody wants to do it. It’s just finding time when everybody can do it. It might be something that hopefully they’re brainstorming for 2011 or 2012. We’ll see.” The bands even got together for a musicians-only dinner before the first show, which made for a perfect way to break the ice. “It was super cool. Metallica arranged a dinner the night before for only band members,” said King. “I hung out there all night and sat down at a table with Shawn (Drover) and Chris (Broderick) from Megadeth and we’re drinking and doing a couple shots here and there and I look up and I said ‘Dude, there’s a lot of famous people in here.’ It was kind of weird.” Slayer isn’t just a normal metal band. Their fans expect an insane show each and every night and it’s widely known that opening for Slayer is a bittersweet gig. It’s an honor to share the stage, but at the same time, you know the fans are going to chant “Slayer, Slayer, Slayer” all throughout your set. Metallica would headline every show on a big four tour, bringing in the most fans every night so the question is - would those fans be able to handle Slayer? “Regarding Metallica’s fans over the years, when I saw them on this last tour, I was amazed at how many frat kids were there,” King said with a laugh. “Not really metalheads, but frat kids. I thought it was kind of bizarre. I could see a frat kid going ‘Yeah, I don’t know about going to see a Slayer show.’ In the context of being part of that show, if they went, ‘cause Metallica has a very stupidly strong fanbase, I think a lot of those people would say ‘You know, there’s plenty of places to watch them where I’m not in the chaos of the deviants,’ so to speak. Maybe they opened their eyes and said ‘After all this is said and done, Slayer comes through. Maybe I’ll go see ‘em after all.’” For now fans in the states can whet their appetite on a possible big four tour when Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth start making the rounds together this fall. Before the big three shows were agreed to, it had to be clear that it wouldn’t interfere with a possible big four tour in the future. “Essentially it’s ‘Clash of the Titans’ 20 years later,” said King of the current big three shows. “When that was brought up to me, I said ‘I’m completely into it, I just don’t want this to detrimentally affect the big four shows.’ I was assured it wouldn’t. To me, that’s more important than the three of us. The four is just, that’s like a metal kid’s dream come true. It’s like when I was a kid if I saw Sabbath, Maiden, Priest and Ozzy ‘cause he wasn’t in Sabbath then.” Last year, Slayer released “World Painted Blood,” the tenth studio album for the men from Huntington Park and one that stands up against the rest in the catalog. After all, Slayer isn’t going to back down when it comes to wicked fast guitar riffs, dizzying drum solos or morbid lyrical content regardless of the political climate or even their own age (every member is teetering on 50). The band is what they have always been – Slayer. While many of their peers seemed to have changed as various forms of mid-life crises took effect, the men of Slayer remained steadfast. “People believe they have to grow up,” says King. “I still feel like I’m 20. I don’t see a reason to grow up. I don’t owe anybody anything. I’m making the music I like and luckily a lot of people like it too.”

SEMI-PRECIOUS WEAPONS The origin story of any artist/group serves as a crucial element for notoriety amongst the musical community. As the “buzz” and “hype” sparks to life, the critics, bloggers, fans proceed to feverishly scan for every portion of information available. Take into account the vast sprawl that is the Internet and it becomes clear how word of mouth is integral to expanding the band’s reach. What tends to attract people further into the musical fray are the stories of chance encounters, or Cinderella-esque stories. They allow an open portrait that creates an immediate connection, opening up a portrait that informs those curious minds about the artist/band’s passion for music. Granted there are countless stories that tug at the heartstrings, or inspire feelings in others to go for one’s goals, the saga of Semi Precious Weapons plays out in the same manner as a charming cinematic experience. Picture a cadre of college graduates fresh off their stint at one of the finest musical institutions in the world, that being the Berklee School of Music. Soon after they decide to migrate to New York City with one lofty ambition: to ignite a resurgence of the raw energy missing from the New York City music scene.

“Everything is so fucking serious, it’s not even funny,” lead singer Justin Tranter says harshly. “Like everyone’s music just tends to be so serious. It’s not fun. It’s not catchy and it doesn’t get anyone moving at all!” Tranter’s rate of verbal fire is slightly disarming. He speaks with a high-energy and even though his voice is traveling from miles away, it’s not difficult to imagine his physical actions perfectly complementing his tone. “We got extremely bored of it all and decided that we were going to take matters into our own hands, because here’s the thing: back in the day rock ‘n roll used to make people dance! AC/DC and Queen had people dancing at their shows every single time! Rock ‘n roll doesn’t have that energy anymore, so that’s what we’re trying to do: give people the best fucking show possible!” At this point is where fantasy meets reality, as Semi Precious Weapons was finding their way alongside a fairly unknown female artist by the name of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. These days she’s know under a different moniker: Lady GaGa. “Lady Gaga is one of the best friends a person could have,” Justin says with a deep admiration. “Before she

blew up and became this world-famous pop star, we were in New York both trying to do our own thing. Next thing you know she stood up for us to play during her NYC show for the first Monster Ball Tour, threatening not to perform unless we got the slot, and now we’re on an 18-week arena tour with her. It’s just so humbling.” While Ms. GaGa’s support has definitely lent itself to delivering the band’s music to an enormous audience, there is a certain charm in the self-indulgence the band displays in their music. The kind of way one might want to act around people, but is entirely too afraid to. The fun of it all is everyone’s in on the joke, but the guise is convincing nonetheless, and within every facet of the band – from its music to its members – there is a bold level of confidence and awareness of a purpose that rock music tends to forget: people want to have fun, through and through. The band carries this message with reckless abandon, utilizing their high-energy shows and crowd-pleasing antics to fuel a fire that cannot be extinguished. And as time passes there is no doubt it will continue to grow and consume more fans in its wake.

The Evolution of An Artist Big B Reminds Us That The Same Ol’, Isn’t OK.

W

hen he first emerged onto the scene in 2004, he didn’t look the part - Big, tattooed, white.Yet on wax, his delivery was fluid, vivid, and downright catchy. Since then, each year has been met with a new release for B, all something different than what preceded. In terms of evolution, Big B has come full circle as he gears up for his next release, Good Times and Bad Advice. No longer the brash middle finger his previous releases have been synonymous with, Big B has honed his ability to tell stories with an introspective take on the bullshit life can often throw your way. Considering the kind of change that the music has seen, do you still find there is a stigma being a white guy doing hip-hop music? Definitely! That’s why I make alternative music with a hip-hop flavor. Let’s be honest I don’t think you will hear me on Power 106 any time soon. No disrespect. That’s just the way it is. I would be lying if I told you otherwise. Your album titles have always made some kind of emphatic statement. What is the thematic weigh behind the title Good Times and Bad Advice? I have had good time listening to peoples fucked up advice and now it’s time to do it my way. I have no regrets it’s just time for change. Where did this record came from mentally? How has your perspective changed from previous records and how did that effect what you wrote? It’s easier to write an album that you know your fans will buy but it’s another thing to write an album that you can look back on and be proud of, and that can stand the test of time. I am just not the same person I was four records ago. I don’t want to go to the club and fight anymore. I’d rather kick back, drink beer, and BBQ with my friends. Some of the best known tunes are party tracks. Do you feel like hip-hop is missing that feel good element it used to have? Yes, for sure, somehow it went from the music coming first to your fashion image. It’s no longer what you’re saying but instead what you are saying it in. Artist would rather repeat a hook a million times than tell a story, it just seems like the easy way out. We have been reading about how this album deals with some heavy shit.... It’s the same Big B just more advance. Just like there are many parts to a person life, I’m just expressing a different side of mine. How do you feel the fans will who embraced the in your face, tattooed whiteboy will take this change? If they don’t take to the change then I guess they were never really fans in the first place. I write my music as an outlet for me, I don’t write music thinking what would the fans like. It’s the fan of this album that will use my music as a voice for them when they hear me sing about something or a situation that they can relate too. < Words By - Ramon Gonzales Photo By - Justin Massengill

FOR THE RECORD Lions in L.A. The articulate angst of Zack De La Rocha has once again emerged in Los Angeles for a good cause. After performing last month with Rage Against The Machine in a benefit to support opponents of the Arizona’s SB 1070, Zack performed along with The Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore in the duo’s project, One Day As A Lion. The benefit show for the Dolores Huerta Foundation saw the duo perform along with legends like Carlos Santana and Pete Escovedo.

Winds of Plague __________________________________________________________________________________________ words by Desiree Scott

Winds of Plague have been called “death core”, but the band works hard not to be classified into any one particular genre. These Southern CA. locals are currently just wrapped up their run on the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival featuring Korn, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, and one of Johnny Plague’s all time favorite bands, Hatebreed. Winds of Plague will be heading back home after the Mayhem Festival is over only to immediately head south where they will be headlining a couple of shows down in Mexico and finally completing their new album. Not only have they been able to tour with some of their favorite bands, they are getting the opportunity to have some of the members collaborate on the album, which is expected to be out early 2011. Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) and Mattie Montgomery (For Today) have recorded appearances so far but Plague did not elaborate on any additional guests. Fusing layered assualts of distorted crunch and pulverising percussion, the transaltion live has catapaulted WOP to the front of the line in a new generation of metalcore that is relentless.

The legendary singer/songwriter has announced a handful of tour dates scheduled for September throughout Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama to help raise funds for the people affected by the environmental catastrophe caused by BP.Young will also donate some 400,000 meals with Tyson Foods Inc., to the Bay Area Food Bank and has asked that at each show, people bring non-perishable foods to donate.

Birdman Goes Big Recession? What recession? Birdman, aka Brian Williams, aka CEO of Cash Money Records (yup, Lil’ Wayne’s Label), decided to splurge a bit recently. Birdman bought himself a Bugatti Veyron. With a sticker price of $2.1 million dollars, some might call the purchase a bit excessive. With an annual up-keep cost of over $300,000 dollars, others would call the purchase down right stupid.

GHoodFellas __________________________________________________________________________________________ words by Ramon Gonzales

Taking on someone’s namesake comes with lofty expectations and firm responsibilities. Christening Tiny Kurupt aka T.K., one third of the Compton-based GHoodFellas,Tha Dogg Pound’s Kurupt has supported the trio in their efforts to restore the luster of West Coast rap. A far departure from the auto-tuned, designer jeans, champagne latent hip hop that currently dominates most radio formats, GHoodFellas remains unwavering street, with a sound that is reminiscent of the heyday of gangsta shit - when music still had a bit of controversy and danger. Comprised of Tiny Kurupt, T.C., and Mellerati, these emcees have a potent combination of lyrical fluidity and well-earned street credibility that remain the backbone of the West Coast sound. Currently working with Kurupt, a talent The Notorious B.I.G. once called the West Coast’s Greatest MC, GHoodFellas continues to build a reputation the old fashioned way, one stage at a time. Earning a rabid following in jaded Los Angeles, fans of legitimate rap have touted this trio as another in a growing contingent of artists commanding respect for West Coast hip hop. The single, “Fucc Jeans,” is a prime example of how it is done.

NITTY GRITTY

J

ust a couple weeks before his 24th birthday, Danny Trejo found himself in trouble again. Thrown in the hole for supposedly striking a guard with a weapon, he was prepared for the worst, expecting another severe punishment for another bad decision. It would ultimately end up being the turning point for a troubled youth who never had a positive direction in which to tread. “Cinco de Mayo in 1968, I went to the hole in Soledad State Prison and it was alleged that I hit Lt. Givens in the head with a rock, so basically my life was washed,” recalled Trejo.“And I could just remember saying a prayer. I remember saying ‘God, if you’re there, it’ll be okay. If you’re not, I’m fucked.’ I prayed a lot. I went (in the hole) in May and I got out in August. I remember saying ‘Okay, he was obviously there ‘cause I’m not going to the gas chamber.’” More than 40 years later, Trejo has become one of the most recognized faces in Hollywood, even if people aren’t always familiar with his name. Show anyone, film snob or casual movie-goer, a picture of Trejo and they will no doubt say something like “Oh yeah, I’ve seen that guy in a bunch of movies.” That’s because he’s participated in nearly 200 projects in the 25 years since he was discovered as a stray on the set of “Runaway Train.” It’s all a labor of love, says Trejo. “A busy man has time to do everything. I love to work. People ask me, ‘Are you gonna go on vacation?’ My life’s a vacation. Not to mean that I’m sitting with pretty umbrella drinks on a beach but … when you absolutely love what you do, and I do. On a movie set, I’m on vacation,” he said. His list of character names during those early years included “Boxer,” “Prisoner,” “Prison inmate,” “Gang member,” “Tough Prisoner #1,” and even “Young Mexican,” to name a few. None of that ever bothered the man who looked at every role as a gift and escape from the hell that was his life in his late teens and early twenties. “God’s given me way more than a fair shake, man. The first five years of my career, I never even had a name,” said Trejo with a laugh. “I never even realized it. I was ‘Inmate #1.’ I thought I had a career. ‘I’m Inmate #1! I’m cool.’ My first (character) name was actually in a Charles Bronson movie called ‘Death Wish IV.’ I played Art Sanella and I was a killer. How rare?“ This month marks the first time in Trejo’s distinguished career that he’s been cast in the leading role. He’ll finally be known as Machete, the bad ass Mexican super hero who battles corruption in a harsh political climate. Trejo is most excited about Machete’s tough as nails approach to crime fighting, as opposed to the glitz and glamour of some other comic book heroes. “Machete’s that … Clint Eastwood, that Charles Bronson action hero. Like, I’m an action hero and I don’t have to wear tights and I don’t have a ‘My dad hates me’ complex. Did you see ‘Iron Man 2?’ I hated it when that guy started sniveling about his dad,” said a laughing Trejo. “I mean, c’mon, you’re a fucking action hero and you’re talking about ‘My father hated me.’”

[

Trejo’s cousin and current partner-in-crime, famed director Robert Rodriguez, first told him of his idea for “Machete,” 15 years ago while the two were filming “Desperado.” When they decided to put together a fake trailer for “Machete” to add to the exploitation enriched “Grindhouse,” it blew up. “When they did ‘Grindhouse,’ they wanted to do these fake commercials, but Robert already had the idea for ‘Machete.’ So he put this fake commercial together, but the commercial got such a great response and had a bit of a cult following so we had to do the movie,” said the now 66-year-old Trejo. Because of Arizona’s controversial immigration law, SB 1070, a recent “Machete” trailer was pulled for hitting too close to home. It’s all good, says Trejo, who doesn’t fear the subject matter has anything to do with current politics. “Machete fights corruption. Corruption is in everything. He’s not really dealing with the guy sneaking across the border to find a job,” he said. “He’s kind of dealing with the corruption that goes behind it. The drug traffickers, the bad businessmen. He goes on both sides and the movie will show that.” Trejo is never worried about being labeled as a typecast actor as is often the case with his career. After all, he’s done quite well for himself portraying a bad ass in most every role. “If you’ve ever taken a good look at one of my pictures, I’m gonna have a tough time playing a car salesman. You know what I mean?” he said. “It’s funny when people say ‘Aren’t you afraid of being typecast?’ As what? A mean-looking Mexican with tattoos? I am a mean-looking Mexican with tattoos so I ain’t gonna be typecast. I’m still a mean-looking Mexican.” He’s so good at what he does, it’s sometimes hard for the general public to separate the man from the onscreen image. At first, people tend to see him as any number of hard edged criminals on the big screen, making initial greetings a bit uncomfortable. “A lot of times, what I have to do is disarm them immediately. Say hello first,” Trejo explained. “The minute I say hi and smile it’s like ‘Oh wow, can we have a picture?’ Shit yeah. It’s what I do for a living; take pictures and sign shit “ If it wasn’t for a rule that makes it difficult for violent felons to pursue a career in fighting, Trejo might have ended up a professional boxer instead of an actor. A champion fighter in the California penal system in the ‘60s, Trejo found a way to fight in the ring once he got out of jail, albeit under the table. He even managed to manipulate a fight or two depending on who was providing the cash. “I was really close (to choosing boxing). When I came out of the joint, I tried to get a boxing license but because of the violence on my record, they wouldn’t give me one,” Trejo recalled. “They put me on probation for a year and I started doing club fights and I had a manager who was a little shady and he would set me up under assumed names and I’d fight different club fights that would pay me a little money here and there. Every once in awhile a manager would say ‘We’re bringing this kid along so can you give us four rounds?’

I’d say ‘Sure, just put a little more in my envelope. It’s not my name anyway.’ So, I’d give ‘em four rounds and I’d go to sleep. The fight game was a lot different in the early ‘70s.” It was a meeting with writer Edward Bunker that changed Trejo’s life forever and turned him into the actor we know today. Bunker did time with Trejo in San Quentin and recognized him hanging out on the set of his film “Runaway Train,” in 1985. Trejo was offered a part as a boxer and asked to train actor Eric Roberts for the role. “Eddie Bunker … one of the greatest writers America’s had. That’s the guy who got me in the business,” said Trejo, who mentioned Bunker’s crime novel, “Education of a Felon,” as another form of inspiration. Soon, Trejo found himself landing more and more roles in Hollywood and his career was born. In addition to “Machete,” Trejo is starring in the upcoming Gil Medina film, “Danny Trejo’s Vengeance,” (www.vengeancearmy.com) alongside 50 Cent, Donal Logue, and Jason Mewes. The independent release has been anchored by the unconventional approach of having a theatrical release that will be followed by a FREE release once the film hits rental outlets. Having cemented a business partnership with Medina years ago, the film, which serves as a tribute to the everyday hero in the vein of Charles Bronson, will also feature Trejo in a leading role and marks the duo’s first onscreen collaboration.

It wasn’t a path simply paved overnight and Trejo doesn’t look at his story as being rags to riches. “It’s kind of ex-con to icon,” he said with a laugh. “I was a damn armed robber. I was a drug addict. Growing up, I had two alternatives – either be a criminal or a laborer. Laborer didn’t sound that good. Basically, taking drugs and alcohol out of your life gives you a step up and dedicating your life to helping other people gives you a bigger step up. That’s why I go to juvenile halls and penitentiaries and high schools and talk about it. I always say, ‘Thugs go broke, gangbangers go to jail and people that help other people seem to have a good life.’”
