Introduction I’m in the mood...to knit some hats! There’s an old expression that says “clothes make the man.” You could also say that the hat makes the woman, and the woman makes the hat! Once you've decided to knit a hat, you have to figure out what sort of hat to make. The choices are varied and vast. First, there’s the general shape, then the color and texture and, finally, the detailing. What’s a girl to do? One way to decide is intuitively. How does a particular hat make you feel when you look at it? For some, getting dressed in the morning is a no-brainer—just slip on a carbon copy of what was worn the day before. Uniforms suit this type of person perfectly. However, many of us, the touchyfeely types, are ruled by our senses and momentary impulses. There are days I just couldn’t bear to wear anything brightcolored, and yet on other days that screaming pink blouse beckons. Although they might not admit it, some guys even ponder their morning shirt and tie choices. I don’t explicitly think about the “whys,” but I do know my decisions are based on my mood when I roll out of bed in the morning. And what’s wrong with that when the choice is there to be had? When it comes to hand-knitting hats, the options expand even further with the plethora of yarn colors and textures available today; it’s a veritable cornucopia. So take a look within, see how you respond to the each of the 40 designs, then cast on. And of course, you can always knit a different hat to suit every mood! Never give up, and keep your ears warm.—Cathy 9
