cricut tools

Let’s talk about tools! It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the fun tools compatible with your machine. Just remember, these tools are not here to confuse you. They each have a purpose and function that makes using your Cricut easier. Let’s get started learning about the most basic hand tools that are essential when crafting.

SWEET RED POPPY®

1

MY five favorites

These are a few of my favorite tools I like to have on hand when using my Cricut. Though some of them may not be necessary, I highly recommend them.

cricut pens & Markers From writing on cards to drawing coloring pages, the Cricut pens and markers always come in handy. While the Maker and Explore share the same lines of pens and markers, the Joy has its own specialty line.

easypress 2

3

The EasyPress combines everything you love about your iron with the precision of a heat press. The flat heat plate of the EasyPress heats up quickly for an evenly distributed, exact temperature.

5

self-healing mat

A self-healing mat protects your work surface and prevents your blades from dulling too quickly. Any cuts on the mat will show up like a scratch and then close. This mat works best with a rotary cutter.

SWEET RED POPPY®

Infusible ink pens & Markers Infusible Ink pens and markers let you create longlasting, vibrant transfers. The pens are perfect for fine lines while the markers easily add bold color.

2 4

easypress mini

This is made for small or unusually shaped projects (think of using Iron-On on canvas shoes or a hat). It’s only 1.92” wide and 3” tall and features a pointed tip, making it the perfect size for small projects.

PAGE 36

Welcome! In this chapter, we will be discussing everything you need to know about Cricut’s Design Space. We’re going to be covering a lot in this lesson, but don’t worry. I’m going to walk you through every single step to ensure you feel confident navigating Design Space. Let’s get started!

Chapter five:

New design Space Features Offset What is Offset in Cricut Design Space? The Offset feature in Cricut Design Space creates a larger or smaller layer of your design. It is perfect for adding a shadow around your image, making your text pop, or giving your design an outline. You can use the Offset feature to create custom stickers, cake toppers, and T-shirts! Offset creates multiple offset layers to make a bold design with added dimension! Another common name for Offset is Shadow since it creates a shadow (or outline) around your design. The Offset feature can be applied to text or images. To use the Offset feature in Cricut Design Space, be sure that you are running Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit only) or higher, or Apple macOS 10.15 or higher. • To upgrade Windows, go to support.microsoft.com. • To upgrade macOS, go to support.apple.com. Offset is only compatible with Design Space when used in the desktop computer app.

Chapter seven: PAPER PAGE 96

Walking into a craft store to buy paper can be a bit overwhelming. You’re immediately confronted by an entire aisle (if not a few aisles) filled with different types of paper. There’s a variety of different finishes, sizes, and even weights. But don’t worry. In this chapter, I’ll go over everything you need to know. I’ll introduce you to some of my favorite types of paper and explain their different uses, types, and weights.

SWEET RED POPPY®

Weights & finishes Paper comes in every color imaginable, giving you a variety of solid colors to match any project.

paper weights & sizes

Paper Finishes Paper can either be coated or uncoated. A coated paper can be glossy or have a waxy finish that lends it some extra shine. Uncoated papers look flat and lack shine. In addition to being coated or uncoated you can also have different textures. Embossed paper has a raised texture creating a unique design. There’s gloss for high shine, linen which is great for stationery, matte which is perfect for every day, the list goes on and on with satin, silk, smooth, even metallic. There are many different finishes and each lends the paper its unique qualities.

Let’s begin by talking about cardstock. This type of paper is both thicker and more durable than the normal printer paper that you’re already familiar with. Cardstock is created from a blend of hardwood and softwood materials, giving it both strength and smoothness. Paper comes in a variety of different weights. It’s most often measured in pounds, ranging from light to heavyweight. The weight refers to the weight of a ream (or 500 sheets) of cardstock in that size. I typically work with cardstock that falls within the 65-80 lb weight range for the majority of my paper crafting with my Cricut machine.

SWEET RED POPPY®

PAGE 97

chapter eight: vinyl Adhesive Vinyl is a staple for all crafters. From personalized mugs to creating one-of-a-kind home decor, it is one of the most versatile materials to work with. You can think of Vinyl like a sticker. The top layer is the actual vinyl, which has a sticky adhesive backing. This is the material you will be cutting and applying to create your project. The second layer is a paper liner that prevents it from accidentally sticking to anything.

1: Insert Mandala Open up Design Space and insert the mandala image (#MB78A527). Size it however you need.

2: Duplicate Stars Insert a star image, size it down and place it below. Duplicate it four times to make five stars (one for each layer).

LAYERING VINYL: STAR METHOD This method has you insert stars into each of the layers in your design so that you can use them as a guide to align your layers while assembling your project. This is an easy method for anyone getting started layering vinyl.

3: Align the Stars Now, line all of the stars up. To do this quickly, select all of the stars and hit Align Center. Without clicking away, move the perfectly aligned stars next to your design, but far enough away so they can easily be cut off.

4: Color Sync Click on Color Sync. Drag each star down, one at a time, until you have one star in each color. Go back to the layers panel, click on the mandala and hit UnGroup.

5: Weld the Pink Layer On the Layers panel, click on the pink element. While holding down Shift, select the matching star. With both of these layers selected, hit Weld. This permanently attaches the star in the correct position to your mandala. UPGRADE TO THE VIDEO COURSE! GET ACCESS TO STEP-BY-STEP VIDEO GUIDES AND UPGRADE TO THEBELOW. VIDEO COURSE! STEP 1: Prepare Your File Size your SVG file according to your project. Feel free to adjust it as needed. Once you have your design ready, click Make It in the top right corner to view the preview screen. Be sure to mirror your image so it is cut the right way for Iron-On.

STEP 2: Cut Your Design Place your Iron-On vinyl shiny side down on your green StandardGrip mat. Make sure that your Cricut is loaded with the Fine-Point Blade. Select your material within Design Space. Next, insert your mat into either your Cricut Maker or Explore machine. Press the C button, and your Cricut will start cutting.

STEP 3: Weed Your Design Once the cut is finished, unload your mat. Next, you will be removing all of the vinyl that you do NOT want to transfer to your project. Use a 45° angle to slowly pull the excess vinyl away, being careful not to rip anything in the process.

STEP 4: Place Design on Shirt Heat your iron or EasyPress (see next page) to 315° (about the wool setting). Preheat your shirt. Find the center and place your decal sticky side down. Once you’re happy with its placement, press your design.

STEP 5: Press the T-Shirt Once your EasyPress is positioned, click the C to start the timer for 30 seconds. After ironing the front, flip over your project and press the back for another 15–30 seconds. This helps to ensure that the Iron-On completely adheres.

STEP 6: Cool and Peel Peel away your transfer. If your Iron-On is warm peel, allow it to cool for about 10–15 seconds before peeling off the backing. If it is a cool peel, wait about 1–2 minutes or until the design is completely cool. PAGE 114

If you’ve never heard of Infusible Ink, or you’ve been intimidated by it, don’t worry. In this chapter, you will learn everything need to know about Infusible Ink to get started.

Chapter twelve:

print then cut

You can use Print Then Cut to make stickers, gift tags, labels, and cupcake toppers. Print Then Cut can be used on a variety of printable materials. A couple of things to keep in mind before you start designing your Print Then Cut design is that you cannot print images larger than 6.75” x 9.25” since you must print your design on a standard 8.5” x 11” size. Print Then Cut is compatible with the Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore family.

Print Then Cut lets you print your design out using a home printer or printing service, then perfectly cuts around your design using your Cricut.

With Print Then Cut, your options are endless. It works with Cricut Design Space images, uploaded SVGs or PNGs, pictures, and really any file.

Chapter thirteen: deep-point blade PAGE 130

In this chapter, we’re going to be covering the Deep-Point Blade. This blade is compatible with both the Cricut Explore series of machines and the Maker. What sets the Deep-Point Blade apart from the Fine-Point Blade is the steep angle of the blade. It features a 60° angle vs. the 45° angle found on the Fine-Point Blade. It’s also made of harder, more durable steel. Now, you might be wondering which materials you should use this blade with. It’s ideal for thick materials such as chipboard, stiff felt, foam sheets, magnets, and cardboard. You can tell this blade apart from others because it’s black.

SWEET RED POPPY®

Chapter fourteen: knife blade In this chapter, you’ll learn all about the Knife Blade. The Knife Blade is only compatible with the Maker. It is one of the things that makes the Maker such an amazing machine!

need to know • Be careful with your font choice. The Engraving Tip makes single, thin lines and cannot replicate some fonts and designs.

Anatomy of The engraving tip

• Use your purple StrongGrip mat. You don’t want your material to move while it’s being engraved. • Always have painter’s tape or masking tape on hand to secure the edges of the material to the mat.

glossary Base A material blank where one can place a design cut out of Vinyl, Iron-On, Infusible Ink, etc. Burnishing A method of rubbing or polishing Transfer Tape to a Vinyl design and Vinyl to a base. Cutting Slits in Transfer Tape A useful technique where small cuts are made in Transfer Tape around a design to help with the application of Vinyl to curved surfaces. Design Space Design software made by Cricut that is compatible with Cricut machines. It allows you to create, design, and cut projects. EasyPress The everyday Iron-On and heat transfer essential! Allows for even and consistent heating at high temperatures. It comes in four sizes, each great for different sizes and types of projects. EasyPress Mat The mat placed between a project and a flat surface to protect the surface from the high heat of an EasyPress or iron. Heat-Resistant Tape Heat-resistant adhesive to hold a design in place during heat transfers. Heat-resistant tape is used particularly with Infusible Ink projects. Infusible Ink A fun way to DIY that results in vibrant, bright, and beautiful projects. Unlike Vinyl or Iron-On where the design sits on top of the material, Infusible Ink becomes one with the material. The designs won’t wrinkle, flake, or crack! Infusible Ink comes in both ink sheets (Transfer Sheets) and Pen & Marker form. Kiss Cut When the machine cuts through only the top layer of material such as cutting through Vinyl and leaving the paper backing intact. Print Then Cut A feature in Design Space that allows printing of designs from a home printer and then cutting them using a Cricut machine (works with Explore and Maker machines). QuickSwap Housing Tools Only compatible with the Cricut Maker. QuickSwap Housing allows you to quickly swap between scoring, debossing, engraving tips, and more. StrongGrip Transfer Tape A stronger Transfer Tape created for Vinyl that has a textured finish. Purple grid lines help with vinyl placement. Transfer Tape Clear adhesive material designed to transfer Vinyl cuts to a variety of surfaces. It works well with most types of Vinyl that have a smooth, non-textured finish. Gray grid lines help with Vinyl placement. Weeding Removing the negative pieces you don’t want from a design using a Weeding tool. PAGE 174
