THE NEW SMITH & WESSON EQUALIZER BRINGS BIG PERFORMANCE IN A SMALL PACKAGE

We’re excited about the introduction of the Smith & Wesson Equalizer. We saw the traction around our Shield EZ product and heard the consumers asking for certain features that weren’t available in the original version. We took the opportunity to listen to our consumers and came up with a more broad-based option that fits nicely between the Shield Plus and Shield EZ offerings we already had in the market.

The Smith & Wesson Equalizer is truly an all-purpose pistol. We’ve included features like an optic-ready slide, under-mounted rail, and a 15-round magazine to accommodate those who would use it for home defense. You can also size down the entire gun and run it with a

10-round flush-fit magazine for an ideal concealed carry footprint. Compatibility with Shield Plus magazines and using the same holsters that were available for the 9MM Shield EZ ensured that there was an abundance of aftermarket support already available for consumers looking to buy right away at launch. For those who needed the easier racking slide, we’ve introduced our next-gen EZ technology to the Equalizer resulting in a much easier racking slide, and for those who have issues loading the magazine, we’ve included a Maglula loader to overcome that hurdle.

Commitment to Conservation: A Look Back at 50 Years

What started as an idea in the mind of a passionate turkey hunter 50 years ago has led to one of the oldest, and most respected, conservation organizations in our nation. The National Wild Tukey Federation was born from what Tom Rodgers knew firsthand, the struggles the wild turkey faced in his home state and across the country, even as state wildlife agencies had been fighting for its restoration.

Rodgers chartered the organization in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on March 28, 1973, as a research and conservation-education organization. With the help of business leaders in Edgefield, South Carolina, and $10,000 of his personal savings, Rodgers began business in one-half of a duplex office building at 201 Buncombe Street in Edgefield.

For the next 40 years, the staff, volunteers, and partners surrounding the NWTF would not only help restore wild turkey populations, they would grow the conservation organization. Over the years, the NWTF has launched many initiatives to restore wild turkey populations, but in 2012, the NWTF launched the ambitious “Save The Habitat. Save The Hunt.” initiative. The 10-year initiative aimed to conserve or enhance 4 million acres of critical wildlife habitat, recruit 1.5 million hunters, and open access to 500,000 additional acres for hunting.

Alongside Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt, in December 2018 the NWTF celebrated the landmark accomplishment of conserving or enhancing more than 20 million acres since tracking began in 1985. As the initiative came to an end in August 2022 the final tallies were impressive: 5,216,914 acres conserved or

enhanced, 1,534,819 hunters recruited, and 700,041 acres opened for hunting/recreational access.

Despite 50 years of unparalleled conservation delivery and success across the board, many factors are resulting in the loss of healthy habitats and wild turkey populations are decreasing in some areas. Also alarming, the number of turkey hunters has been declining as well.

Insufficient habitat management, the fragmentation and development of previously untouched lands, decreased public support of hunting, reduced funding and resources, and fewer turkey hunters to conserve and revere this iconic bird are some of the numerous challenges that are negatively impacting much of the hard-fought work the NWTF and its partners have accomplished.

In a joint statement, new co-CEOs Jason Burckhalter and Kurt Dyroff outlined their priorities for the organization. “We look forward to building upon the NWTF’s nearly 50 years of success. The future is bright and reminds us how the NWTF achieved it: our mission and people. The NWTF will increase focus on our membership and member experience and bolster research and habitat delivery

in areas experiencing wild turkey population decline. Our mission, as ever, is to ensure robust wild turkey populations. Doing so yields multiple benefits— healthy forests, waterways, and communities as well as championing the soul of the American hunting lifestyle. This requires a nimble organization, built on a solid financial foundation, capable of retaining and attracting the best and brightest minds.”

Though NWTF can look back fondly over memories of the last 50 years of conservation, friends, fellowship, and hunts, the organization urges hunters to join ranks as it looks forward to the next 50 years. Booth #41160 (nwtf.org)

Finally, both models are full-auto rated. SRP: $899.99.

“We are excited to bring these new silencers to the market,” says Joshua Hood, AAC’s senior consumer service rep. “These are a product of a year and a half of R&D, and we’re really excited to get them out into the world and into the hands of the end user.”

As the company expands its product portfolio it is also enhancing its sales efforts by signing three new sales groups to represent the company as it grows market share in the competitive suppressor segment.

“The new sales groups will cover the Midwest, Southern, and Western regions,” says Malcolm Johnson, AAC's director of sales, “We are excited to bring these well-known and respected organizations onto the AAC team to help provide our distributors and retail customers with the personal service they need to successfully meet their growing consumer demand for quality pistol, rifle, and shotgun suppressors.”

The three organizations are Covey Sales & Marketing (Midwest), Proactive Sales and Marketing (South), and MSSM Group (West).

“We are excited to be working with AAC and leading their sales and marketing efforts in our region,” said Ken Johnson, principal partner, Covey Sales & Marketing. “The company’s wide range of premium sound suppression devices will complement the premium firearms brands we represent, allowing us to provide another level of sales and demo capability to the wholesalers, retailers, and end-users in our region.” Booth #70851 (advanced-armament.com)

More Options

Being in the ammunition business requires the deft touch exemplified by a high-wire acrobat. Manufacturers in this arena need to churn out millions of rounds of ammunition per year to satisfy unrelenting consumer demand while at the same time nurturing the ability to spot emerging trends that will require capital investment to develop new products to meet that demand. One of the reasons CCI, in business for more than 75 years, is sometimes referred to as “the king of rimfire,” is its uncanny ability to do just that.

CLEAN-22 IS ONLY ONE EXAMPLE.

“Clean-22 was partly developed to build .22 LR ammunition without the traditional wax coating,” says CCI rimfire product line director Jason Slinkard. “Instead, it uses a proprietary polymer coating. The development of this product line was also a direct result of listening to our customers who wanted cleaner-shooting ammo, and this polymer coating was created to handle the friction and heat associated with the velocities of rimfire ammunition. Because of this polymer coating, it’s the cleanest-shooting lead .22 LR ammunition we offer.”

Clean-22 ammo features a lead bullet completely encapsulated in a protective polymer coating. The polymer coating replaces the wax traditionally applied to .22 LR ammunition to protect the barrel of the gun from the buildup of lead or copper residue. But the new polymer coating does a far better job, and that means the user will not have to break down and clean the gun as often. In general, Clean-22 products also cut lead buildup in suppressors 60 to 80 percent and reliably function in semi-automatic firearms. And, like all other CCI products, Clean-22 ammo is built with dependable CCI primers and propellent designed to deliver consistent performance.

Clean-22 launched in 2019 with two options: Sub-Sonic and High Velocity. Both loads feature a 40-grain round-nose lead bullet colored in a way to signify their differences, which will help the end user quickly identify exactly what they are looking for when browsing ammo stocks at a retail outlet.

Red (High Velocity) boasts a muzzle velocity of 1,235 fps; Blue (Sub-Sonic) features a muzzle velocity of 1,070 fps. Both options are sold in 100-count, clear-sided, durable boxes. Later, CCI released a few other High-Velocity loads in other purpose-driven colors. Clean-22 Pink helps support efforts to find a cure for breast cancer. (A portion of the proceeds from every box sold goes directly to support this cause.) Clean-22 Realtree camo has bullets colored tan, green, and black, which are attractive to hunters. Clean22 Xmas sports the colors of red and green and is popular during the winter holidays. All of these .22 LR ammo products have a muzzle velocity of 1,235 fps and come in 400-round bulk bottles that are perfect for long days at the range.

In 2020, CCI introduced Suppressor .22 LR (black bullets) in the company’s unique 200-count “pour pack” cartons and Maxi-

“Clean-22’s advanced polymer bullet coating reduces lead fouling inside a suppressor by up to 60 percent,” Slinkard says. “This feature allows much easier suppressor cleaning and maintenance. For that reason, our Clean-22 Sub-Sonic product was initially popular with suppressor users. However, the newer Clean-22 Suppressor product shoots even better when used with a suppressed firearm due to its heavier 45-grain bullet set to a muzzle velocity of 1,000 fps. This ultimately gives suppressor fans more options.”

Slinkard emphasizes that Clean-22 Maxi-Mag SHP is the industry’s only segmenting .22 WMR hollow-point bullet. The load’s 46-grain segmented hollow point splits into three equal-size pieces on impact, tripling the number of wound channels. The polymer bullet coating allows this separation at much lower velocities and longer distances than a conventional copper jacket. The load features an olive-drab green bullet with a muzzle velocity of 1,850 fps and is available in 50-count boxes.

Shooters who like the fast and very popular CCI Stinger or Velocitor loads will love Clean-22 Hyper Velocity, which is new for 2023. Its 31-grain, round-nose bullets are colored purple, and its muzzle velocity is set to 1,550 fps.

“This new SKU delivers lots of energy with less lead fouling in the firearm or their suppressor,” Slinkard says. “When customers come into your store saying they like to shoot Stingers or Velocitors, you’ll find it an easy task turning them on to this new clean, hyper-fast load.”

By adding the Clean-22 Hyper Velocity to the lineup CCI now has a .22 LR load in four muzzle-velocity windows: 1,000, 1,070, 1,235, and 1,500 fps.

“Customers are always looking for variety, and CCI has always delivered. This new SKU rounds up the Clean-22 product family,” says Slinkard. “Now dealers can supply a full variety of color, cartridge, velocity, packaging, and bullet options in products that feature CCI’s exclusive Clean-22 polymer bullet coating.” Booth #11838 (cci-ammunition.com)

NSSF Caps Year with Industry Victories on Capitol Hill

It’s been a busy year for NSSF’s Government Relations-Federal Affairs team in Washington, D.C. There’s no shortage of wins to keep manufacturers, distributors, and retailers in business.

NSSF continues to push back against “woke” capitalism. NSSF is leading the effort with the Fair Access to Banking Act, which would work to end the discriminatory lending practices of major banking institutions that seek to circumvent the legislative process and set social policy from the boardroom. The bills (S.563/H.R.1729) were introduced by U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY). NSSF’s efforts resulted in one-third of the U.S. Senate and 81 U.S. Representatives signing on to co-sponsor the legislation by the end of 2022.

NSSF, with Rep. Jack Bergman (R-MI) and Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), introduced the Firearm Industry Nondiscrimination (FIND) Act (H.R.6970/S.4435). This legislation would end the ability of corporate entities to profit off of taxpayerfunded federal contracts while discriminating against the firearm industry at the same time.

Our industry continued to be unfairly targeted by House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). Marty Daniel, of Daniel Defense; Chris Killoy, of Sturm, Ruger and Co.; and Mark Smith, of Smith & Wesson, were called to testify before a hostile U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee. Antigun Democrats attempted to score points, but Daniel and Killoy fended off their false and misleading accusations. Smith was unavailable to testify, but later blasted the committee for attempting to hold the manufacturers responsible for the heinous acts of the mentally ill and criminals.

NSSF was at the forefront of industry efforts to ship firearms and ammunition to Ukraine. NSSF coordinated with the Ukrainian Embassy and the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry Security to identify Ukraine’s small-arms needs and to expedite export licenses, helping U.S. manufacturers support Ukraine’s defenses in the early days of the invasion and staying within the rules governing firearm export controls.

NSSF kept a constant and growing presence on Capitol Hill, notably with the industry’s annual FlyIn. NSSF member companies met with 35 U.S. Representatives and senators. At that event, NSSF named Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) as the 2021 Legislator of the Year.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act consumed much of Washington, D.C.’s attention in 2022. NSSF was unable to support the legislation, but prevented the inclusion of hardware bans in the legislation. NSSF was able to get important industry provisions included, such as providing more resources to address mental health and improve school security, allowing industry members to check NICS to see whether a current or prospective employee is prohibited, strengthening penalties for illegal “straw” purchases and illegal firearms trafficking, and clarifying when someone is required to have a federal firearm license and improving the background check system to prevent guns from being transferred to prohibited persons.

NSSF was pleased that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) listened to NSSF’s comments on the Frame & Receiver Final Rule submitted by industry members. The Final Rule adopted many of our comments. NSSF has explained to members how these new rules will affect firearm retailers and gunsmiths through a series of educational webinars.

NSSF witnessed ATF Director Steve Dettelbach’s investiture. While we will often disagree on policy, NSSF has been encouraged by his willingness to engage in discussions on issues that significantly impact our industry. That includes the Biden administration’s “zero-tolerance” inspection policy that has seen closed inspections re-opened and licenses revoked. NSSF has warned ATF leadership that these “zero-tolerance” inspections risk the cooperative relationship most firearm retailers have with ATF field offices. Firearm retailers are a trusted partner in crime prevention and the primary source of leads to ATF.

On conservation, NSSF opposed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Final Rule that will ban without scientific evidence the use of traditional lead ammunition on National Wildlife Refuges (NWR). To counter, NSSF worked with Sen. Daines and Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA) and Bruce Westerman (R-AR) to introduce the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act (S.4940/H.R.9088), which prohibits the Interior and Agricultural Department secretaries from instituting ammunition bans without scientific evidence of detrimental wildlife population impacts.

NSSF celebrated the Modernizing Access to Our Public Land (MAPLand) Act, which was signed into law and digitized maps for hunters to know exactly where they can access public lands. Through NSSF efforts, the Interior Department announced another $95 million for wetland and NWR conservation and secured $10 million in appropriations for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) research and prevention efforts.

This came as the firearm industry celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Pittman-Robertson excise tax, the tax paid by firearm manufacturers that funds wildlife conservation, hunter education, and range construction. Those contributions surpassed $15.6 billion (over $23 billion when adjusted for inflation). Capitalizing on that, NSSF worked with Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT) to introduce the Range Access Act, which would require a public shooting range on every National Forest and every district managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the United States.

It’s been a busy year and these are just the high points. NSSF’s Government Relations-Federal Affairs team is already working with the new Congress to work for the industry’s interests in 2023.

JASON LONSBERRY

Jason Lonsberry launched Mississippi-based APEX Ammunition in 2017 with two hunting buddies, Jared Lewis and Nick Charney. The enterprise started with a few handmade shells created for a duck hunting trip, but it quickly became an obsession to provide wingshooters with top-performing ammunition. APEX Ammunition soon pioneered the commercial application of ultra-high-density Tungsten Super Shot to create hard-hitting, accurate shot loads.

preferred gauge, shell length, and shot sizes. They then can customize their own shell (under safety guidelines that APEX provides), and they receive their shells in a handwritten custom box with their name and shell recipe on it.

As a result of this focus on superior downrange performance, Apex is now able to offer hunters waterfowl, upland, and turkey ammo, all of which feature TSS loads in 10 gauge to .410 bore and everything in between. Booth #71104 (apexammunition.com)

DAVID DING

After immigrating from Taiwan, David Ding settled in Michigan, where he graduated with a degree in computer science from the University of Detroit Mercy. He then spent eight years in heavy truck sales and marketing systems at the Ford Motor Company. The work paid the bills, but he felt he had yet to find his life’s true calling. Having served in both the Taiwanese military police and district police, Ding always had an interest in the shooting sports, an interest that he rekindled while reading firearm publications in the local library. Shortly thereafter, in 1992, working with his wife out of their home garage, he founded Leapers, Inc. The company’s first product was a compact 4x28 riflescope.

Thirty years later, Leapers has become an international powerhouse located in a fourbuilding campus encompassing more than 150,000 square feet in Livonia, Michigan. The facility is not only home to the company’s inhouse product design and development teams, but also houses manufacturing facilities, indoor proving grounds, and an advanced order-fulfillment and distribution center.

With operations in Germany, Taiwan, and China, Leapers now boasts a workforce of more than 350 employees, all of whom work together to produce a selection of more than 700 different SKUs across seven different product lines that range from high-quality optics, handguards, and accessories to bipods, range bags, and more.

As a result, the UTG and the made-in-theU.S.A. UTG PRO brands have gained wide market recognition across the globe. Now, as part of the company’s celebration of its 30th anniversary, Leapers has introduced INTEGRIX, a new line of higher-tier first and second focal plane optics, further enhancing the company’s well-earned reputation as a provider of innovative hunting and shooting-sports products.

CHRIS BAUMBACH

Because the APEX team felt there was a huge hole to fill, both in product and in customer service, they started producing TSS loads for the commercial market. As more hunters are learning, tungsten is the gold standard for hardhitting loads. It is significantly denser than steel, lead, bismuth, and copper.

Lonsberry also saw an opportunity to produce superior patterning through precision handloading. And that insight led to TSS shotshell lines for waterfowl, upland, turkey, predator, and deer hunting. APEX also offers the Small Batch Series. Similar to the traditions of smallbatch handcrafted whiskeys, APEX will create a “Small Batch” of certain shot sizes or combinations of shot in a very limited run. Doing so allows Springfield to offer a very high-end product with custom-level features, but at a production-grade cost. The Model 2020 is a perfect example of this.

Baumbach has numerous patents filed on the Model 2020, the SAINT, and several other Springfield offerings. became a program coordinator and writer for North American Hunter and North American Fisherman magazines.

In the summer of 2010, ATK hired him to write marketing materials for shooting accessory brands such as Weaver Optics, Gunslick, Outers, and Champion Target. Two years later, Reich moved to the public relations team to work on the Federal Ammunition brand. In 2015, ATK spun off its consumer division to newly created Vista Outdoor. Tooling Up for Success

A combination of innovative products and complementary packaging helps keep Real Avid ahead of the pack.

After spending 20 years in various merchant roles with big-box retailers, Dave Steiner joined Revo Brands in late 2014 as the general manager of Real Avid. At that time, the brand was primarily known for its gun multi-tools. Over the past eight years, though, the brand has grown ten times its former size by putting an unrelenting focus on leading with “on-trend” innovation and by measuring success the same way retailers measure success—by delivering consistent sales growth and profitability and by delighting their consumers. Under Steiner’s leadership, Real Avid remains committed to creating the “best-possible experience,” which is why he believes world-class shooters, gun do-it-yourselfers, and new gun owners choose Real Avid as their favorite brand for cleaning, maintaining, and building guns.

SHOT Daily: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next five years?

Dave Steiner: Based on the past few years, it may be that the unpredictability of the marketplace is the biggest challenge. It seems as though the one thing we can count on is that the factors influencing consumer demand and production are constantly changing. For Real Avid, staying focused on what we can control is paramount. We need to identify trends quickly, build product to satisfy underserved consumers, and have it available to our retail partners as fast as possible.

SD: What opportunities do you see?

DS: There is always opportunity to bring game-changing product ideas to the industry. Our retail partners know this and expect Real Avid to deliver innovation year after year. Our optimism, based on real sell-through data, gives us the confidence to try new things, knowing that the consumer will react with their pocketbook. When this happens, our independent retailers succeed. And their success becomes our success.

SD: When you get up in the morning, what gets you excited about working in the industry?

DS: I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of industries throughout my career. Hands down (with no close second) the people who live and work in this space are the best. The hearts and souls of outdoor enthusiasts (my team, our business partners, our consumers) make up an industry that I feel privileged and fortunate to work in. We all care deeply about our outdoor passions. We share many important values, and we want to see each other continue to preserve these commonalities as we work to grow the marketplace. Simply put, I’m having a blast doing what I do because of the people I get to do it with.

SD: How will you meet the expectations of your customers?

DS: I actually hope we can exceed their expectations. We keep it very simple: listen, partner, and focus on making them successful. We don’t think of them as customers; we think of them as business partners. We’re not afraid to roll up our sleeves and work alongside of them, both figuratively and literally. No ivory towers exist at Real Avid.

Dave Steiner, President, Real Avid

SD: In a very competitive world, how does Real Avid stay ahead of the pack?

DS: It’s kind of you to suggest that we might be ahead of the pack. We will continue to try to do our best to bring innovation to the marketplace. Much of the time this is about product innovations, but we are also working hard to make the in-store experience different.

SD: You recently launched the Pro Shop Upgrade program. How does the program work? What are the benefits for your dealers?

DS: It’s a program that was built through collaboration with our retail partners. It was not something we just dreamed up and then tried to sell. It was created by retailers for retailers, and top independent dealers throughout the country were involved in building the concept. The main goal of the Pro Shop is to create a simple, yet compelling shopping environment in which both the sales associate and the consumer can quickly find what they are looking for. It also makes the shop look great.

Our brand can provide the store and the consumer a complete gun-maintenance experience with a “one-stop shop” that provides customers with not only cleaning chemicals, cleaning kits, and components, but multi-tools, build tools, and gunsmith tools as well. When all this comes together, our partners see sales skyrocket. They

also enjoy great margin rates and fast-turning inventory. For many dealers, our Pro Shop is the “easy button” because we are there from start to finish. We size it right for their space, we set

it up, we make it easy to reorder. And it’s all done with just one brand.

SD: You have said, “Our product packaging has always captured the attention of the consumer.” How does it do this?

DS: We try to keep it simple with strong messages on the front and more detailed explanations on the back. Calling out the gun platform also helps the consumer find what they are looking for easily.

SD: Real Avid seems to focus on simple things, such as cleaning brushes and jags, exemplified by the Bore-Max Speed Clean System. What’s in the company DNA that allows you to be successful in this area?

DS: Our founders are entrepreneurial, innovative, and creative people. We look for and hire talent capable of thinking the same way, too. When we put a bunch of smart, creative, collaborative, and passionate gun enthusiasts in a room, good things happen. From the most basic product needs like our new Speed Brushes to the most sophisticated tool like our new Armorer’s Master Vise, it is in our DNA to make the best tools for the job. KNIVES 2023

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “Change is the only constant in life.” That just might be a fitting theme for the knife companies that are launching new designs at this year’s SHOT Show. The most immediate change you’re likely to notice as you step into the convention halls is that the majority of the knife companies have new booth locations this year. Much of this shuffle is because so many companies were still getting back to normal after the pandemic and didn’t attend the SHOT Show last year.

The other significant change that might, or might not, have anything to do with the pandemic is that many companies are releasing knife designs that have moved away from the standard three-inch EDCs that were so prominent a few years ago. Look for innovative designs, out-of-the-box thinking, and new ways of capturing a customer’s attention with many of this year’s new releases. Of course, there are still plenty of the tried-and-true designs that will never go out of style. Because not everything always has to change.

BEAR & SON CUTLERY

At their new booth (#12865), Bear & Son will be featuring a new Bowie knife that’s sure to turn few heads. The Cocobola Gold Rush Bowie features a hefty 73⁄8-inch Sandvick 12C27M stainless-steel blade. The knife has an overall length of 12 inches and weighs 16.4 ounces. The handle is made of Cocobola wood and features a curved brass hand guard. SRP: $154.99, which includes a leather sheath. Booth #12865 (bearandsoncutlery.com)

BROWNING

Browning is giving hunters a sharper edge this year with the release of their new Primal Scalpel Kill Kit. The Kill Kit comes complete with everything hunters need to make easier work of field dressing big game, including a pair of disposable gloves, zip ties, 10 feet of blaze paracord, and a blaze storage bag to keep the kit together. The Kill Kit even includes four washable and reusable game bags that feature a reflective logo to make it easier to spot in the dark. The highlight of the kit is the Primal Scalpel knife. The knife features stainless-steel replaceable scalpel blades locked securely in a foldable frame complete with a thumb stud and pocket clip. The blackand-orange handle is made of sturdy polymer with a rubber overmold and non-skid grooves on the spine. The knife comes with 10 replacement blades housed in a storage container that doubles as the blade installation/ removal tool. SRP: $99. Booth #12238 (browning.com)

CAMILLUS

Camillus is presenting its new line of knives from a different location this year in Booth #13660. One of the standouts of the 2023 line is a knife that will no doubt be unlike anything else featured at the SHOT Show this year. The Swedge is part fixed-blade knife, part chisel, and part file. Created to handle a wide range of campsite chores, Camillus describes the Swedge as a cross between a “bushcraft knife and a small hatchet.”

The 8.75-inch knife features a thick 4.3-inch titaniumbonded 420 stainless-steel blade with a textured ABS plastic handle. SRP: $24.99, which includes a molded sheath with a belt clip. Booth #13660 (camillusknives.com)

BUCK

The Buck Alpha Hunter is built to withstand the rigors of big-game hunting. The S35VN steel blade will hold an edge through the entire field-dressing process without the need for resharpening, and a high-panel flat grind adds strength to the blade that allows you to cut with confidence. Jimping on the top of the blade delivers ultimate control when using different grips on the knife for detailed work. The purpose-designed textured handle gives you a trusted grip, even in wet conditions. Includes a reinforced leather sheath. Booth #13651 (buckknives.com)

COLUMBIA RIVER KNIFE & TOOL

Columbia River Knife & Tool is continuing its tradition of developing designs that seamlessly blend aesthetics and functionality to create knives that look every bit as amazing as their performance. Case in point: the new Pilar IV. The 7.34-inch knife is designed with a natural contour that effortlessly fits into the user’s hand and features two deep finger choils to ensure a secure grip whether it’s being used to field dress large game or slice open the tape on the latest package left on your porch. The 3-inch clip-point blade is made from D2 steel and is deployed from the G10 handle on CRKT’s IKBS ball-bearing pivot system. SRP: $90. CRKT is also adding to its Forged by War line with the new Taco Viper tactical folder. Created and named by Antonio Rodriguez in homage to the nickname for his former unit, the Taco Viper features a 4.22-inch high-carbon stainless-steel blade with Veff serrations and a stonewash finish. The blade is housed in a glass-reinforced nylon handle and features assisted-opening deployment. SRP: $135. Booth #10051 (crkt.com)

HOGUE

Hogue will be launching its Collector Series of knives at its new booth #14838. As the name implies, the line consists of high-end collector-edition knives made from premium materials. The signature knife in the line is the new Counterstrike. The out-the-front automatic features a 3.35-inch doubleedge blade made from cryogenically heat-treated CPM MagnaCut stainless steel. The hard-anodized aluminum frame is housed in a black carbon-fiber handle complete with a carbide glass breaker and lanyard hole. The Counterstrike features an ambidextrous trigger deployment and retraction to make it effective regardless of which hand it’s held in. SRP: $399.95. Booth #14838 (hogueknives.com)

OUTDOOR EDGE

Outdoor Edge is releasing a more-compact version of its popular Razor-Lite EDC replaceable-blade knife from its new booth location at #70935. The new Razor-Lite 2.5-inch features a black-oxide coated blade holder that houses 2.5-inch replaceable razor blades made from Japanese 420J2 stainless steel. The knife comes with four blades, which are replaceable with the push of a button, and features a double-molded Grivory handle with rubberized TPR inserts. Available in black, olive green, or blaze orange, the RazorLite EDC 2.5-inch comes complete with thumb studs on both sides and a replaceable pocket clip. SRP: $39.50. Booth #70935 (outdooredge.com)

ONTARIO KNIFE COMPANY

Ontario Knife Company’s new Epoch folder is a prime example of the innovative new designs prevalent at this year’s SHOT Show. The 2-inch blade, which is made from D2 steel, is designed with sharp diagonal edges at the spine and tip to create a modern-looking EDC that has the kind of substantial heft to handle even the heaviest of cutting tasks. Adding to the style of the Epoch folder is the golden finish on the blade, which contrasts sharply with the handle that features olivegreen G10 scales on one side and brushed stainless steel on the other. SPYDERCO

Spyderco is continuing its long-standing tradition of releasing top-quality knives for nearly every purpose and multiple price points. Standing front and center in their new booth #10555 at this year’s SHOT Show will be the Stretch 2XL folder that provides a powerful option for people who want something more substantial than a three-inch blade in their EDC. The Stretch XL is nearly 9 inches overall and features a 4-inch blade made from CPM CRU-WEAR tool steel with a full-flat grind. The handle features gray G-10 scales with a back lock on the spine. SRP: $406.50. Spyderco is also releasing two versions of its Ambitious lightweight knife for those who are looking for something a little lighter and more compact. Both versions have a 2.31-inch blade and tip the scales at a mere 2.8 ounces. One version features a CPM S35VN stainless-steel blade with a blue fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle. Available in either a plain edge or fully serrated option. SRP: $130. The other version of the Ambitious EDC has a blade made from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel with a black-oxide finish that coordinates with the black fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle. SRP: $60. W.R. CASE

At this year’s SHOT Show, Case is breaking away from what people traditionally expect to see from the iconic knifemaker by releasing an assisted-opening EDC from its new booth location #10538. Not only is the new Westline knife a break from tradition for Case, it’s also a break from the traditional design of the EDC. The 3-inch S35VN stainlesssteel blade has a stylized drop-point design, which gives it a modern flair. That contemporary feel is further enhanced by the blade’s stonewash finish and the hard-anodized handle, which is available in blue, red, silver, and black. SRP: $199. Booth #10538 (caseknives.com)

Gunsite Glock Service Pistol Debuts

In an unprecedented move, Gunsite Academy has teamed up with firearms manufacturer GLOCK Inc. (Booth #12411), firearms distributor Davidson’s Gallery of Guns (Booth #72317), and Holosun Technology (Booth #13420) to produce the new Gunsite Glock Service Pistol (GGSP). The announcement came during a SHOT Show press conference.

After months of design and testing, the GGSP is a 9mm Glock 45 model with these specific modifications: Ameriglo Suppressor Sights, FBI Mag Release (a bit larger than the standard release with rounded edges), Lanyard Loop in the tradition of the original Gunsite Service Pistol, and a minus connector for better trigger press. In addition, the GGSP features a Holosun 509T reflex optical sight directly mounted to the slide, an API (American Pistol Institute) serial number, Raven & Gunsite logo (“Bird and the Word”) on the slide, and a retro Raven Back Plate (available only through the Gunsite Pro Shop).

“Gunsite continues to evolve as Jeff Cooper envisioned it, and that means both training and equipment have evolved,” says Gunsite CEO Ken

Campbell. “As with the original Gunsite Service Pistol (GSP), the Gunsite Glock Service Pistol (GGSP) is a robust, reliable, and affordable fighting person’s pistol.”

Gunsite Academy owner Owen “Buz” Mills agrees with this assessment. “Glock is the right design, at the right time, with the right price,” he says.

According to GLOCK national sales manager Bob Radecki, GLOCK was an eager participant in this project. “GLOCK is very pleased to collaborate with Gunsite and Davidson’s to provide the Gunsite GLOCK Service Pistol to meet the needs of those who prefer an optic-equipped, high-capacity, striker-fired pistol,” he said. “Gunsite, GLOCK, and Davidson’s are leaders in their fields of endeavor, and the features chosen for this pistol reflect that leadership and insight.”

The GGSP will be sold exclusively through Davidson’s Gallery of Guns and the Gunsite Academy Pro Shop. SRP: $1,274.99. The new gun is available now.

The original American Pistol Institute (API), now known as

Gunsite Academy, offers firearms training in multiple levels of instruction in handgun, carbine, shotgun, bolt-action rifle, and precision rifle. Founded in 1976 by Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper, Gunsite Academy goes beyond the shooting fundamentals, teaching the principles of gun-handling and mind-set.

Benelli Launches Premier Dealer Program

Quality products combined with quality service equals a quality customer experience. That is the foundation for a lasting and profitable business relationship. It is also the foundation of the new Benelli Premier Dealer Program, which launched at a Benelli dealer meeting at the 2023 SHOT Show. This new initiative by Benelli USA is designed to deliver a positive, consumer-focused in-store experience with leading independent retailers across the country.

The Benelli Premier Dealer Program pairs the most respected shooting sports retailers in the U.S. with an experiential retail floor presentation highlighting the Benelli, Franchi, and Stoeger brands. This is a first-of-its-kind creative execution, the centerpiece of which consists of 90 Benelli brand long guns displayed in a dynamic merchandising format that is high-tech, efficient, and visually stands out to educate and inspire consumers.

In addition to the enhanced merchandising experience, the program offers participating dealers enhanced benefits, including product fulfillment, featured exposure on BenelliUSA.com, consumer events, and more. The Benelli Premier Dealer Program also combines instore merchandising with digital and social media in an omni-channel approach to build brand and product awareness through Benelli’s top customers.

The Benelli Premier Dealer Program currently has locations across the country, from California to Maine. The program kicks off officially this year as Benelli looks to expand dealer participation throughout 2023. Part of this official launch was a reception for participating dealers at this year’s SHOT Show.

“Benelli USA could not be more excited to officially launch our Premier Dealer program as an elevated partnership that strengthens

the bond with our top customers nationally,” said Lee Colquitt, vice president of sales. “By investing in each other, we will work to grow revenue by combining our best-inclass firearms with best-in-class independent retailers and by incorporating high-level sales and marketing strategies for years to come.”

Supplier Showcase Continues to Grow

The right materials are a very big deal. That’s why the NSSF instituted the Supplier Showcase at SHOT Show a few years ago. It was designed to be a dedicated event for suppliers to display their shooting, hunting, and outdoor material supplies off the main trade show floors. Initially, the Supplier Showcase was a one-day event on the day before the SHOT Show opened, but the response by attendees and exhibitors has been so encouraging that it is now a two-day event.

Attendees this year were able to meet with more than 500 suppliers who offered countless materials and solutions for attendees’ manufacturing needs. If you use or produce tools, machinery, plastics, fabrics, OE materials, logistics, software, or other products and services for the shooting, hunting, outdoor, and law enforcement industries, then the Supplier Showcase is an opportunity to connect with a wide range of manufacturers and other industry professionals.

ELECTRONICS

Like every other industry, the shooting, hunting, and outdoor trades segment has become more reliant on technology in recent years. In fact, it’s difficult to sift through all the new e-products at SHOT this year, and it would be impossible to list every new technology product here. But we’ll take a closer look at how electronics are enhancing our time outdoors. That’s a very different stance than many people had on electronics and the outdoors just few years ago. For a time, new technology like cellphones seemed to be at odds with experiencing the world around us, but what we’re learning is that advanced technology can improve our time outdoors, not just distract us from it. A whole new generation of hunters, shooters, and outdoor enthusiasts has used technology in every facet of their lives since childhood, but in today’s world even the most ardent anti-tech shooter or hunter can find some benefit in the latest electronics.

There are real benefits to the age of new outdoor technology, as you’ll see here. Rangefinders help us shoot more accurately. Electronic hearing protection preserves our hearing while allowing us to communicate effectively in the field. Even the way we cook wild game and fish has been touched by the long finger of technology—and all of these are for the better.

Here’s a rundown of several of the new technology products you’ll see on display at SHOT 2023. They and others like them are symbolic of a large, growing trend in the hunting, shooting, and outdoor space: the increased use of technology not as a distraction but as a way to enhance and enjoy the activities we already love.

GARMIN

Garmin has long been the leader in GPS technology, and their expansive list of products are used by millions of Americans every day for route navigation, exercise tracking, and much more. Garmin has always had a strong relationship with the hunting, shooting, and outdoor communities, and the company has released some high-tech devices that are must-haves in the field. Chief among those is the new tactix 7 watch, an advanced tactical smartwatch that offers GPS navigation, health and wellness monitoring, public-land boundary maps, and more. tactix 7 watches with Applied Ballistics technology even offers customized aiming solutions for long-range shooting on your watch, allowing you to make holdover and windage adjustments with minimal movement. These watches come with 1.4-inch display, sapphire lens, and a dual touchscreen with a five-button touchscreen. These watches are MIL-STD-810 and water rated to 10 ATM, and with durable features like metal button guards and reinforced metal lugs paired with the black DLC coated titanium bezel and rear cover, you can be sure that your tactix 7 will withstand even the worst conditions. There’s even a Stealth mode that records distance traveled and biometric data without recording location to preserve operational security. Never before has so much tactical (and practical) technology been strapped to your wrist. Booth #41755 (garmin.com)

AXIL

I grew up around hunters and shooters, and I remember that many of them were hard of hearing or effectively deaf. At some point in my youth I realized that, with proper precautions, shooters need not lose their hearing, and since then I’ve tried to wear hearing protection every time I fired a gun. Sometimes, however, hearing protection is, to put it frankly, a pain. Wearing earplugs makes it more difficult to communicate with hunting companions and muffs tend to contact the stock of a rifle or shotgun. Thankfully, companies like Axil now offer electronic hearing protection that protects hearing without interfering with the experience.

Axil offers a full line of medical-grade hearing aids with protection and all-inone earbuds to cover outdoor applications. One example of this is the GS Electronic. These are small and comfortable earphones with a rechargeable lanyard to control the volume. Designed to protect your hearing from the report of a firearm, they at the same time allow you to enjoy the conversation in a duck blind or hear the commands of the range officer at your shooting range. The Automatic Hearing Protection feature automatically shuts out sounds above 85 dB. SRP: $139.

The GS Custom (SRP: $699.99) can act as a hearing enhancement tool or as a hearing protection tool. It’s also Bluetooth-enabled for studio sound quality or hands-free communication. Booth #14845 (goaxil.com)

SIONYX

Night-vision technology has opened our eyes to a whole new world, and this year SIONYX is taking night-vision equipment to a new level with the introduction of their color night-vision OPSIN DNVM1 helmeted-mounted monocular. At the heart of this unit is SIONYX’s XQE-1350 Black Silicon sensor that offers unrivaled low-light clarity, allowing you to see in moonless, starlit conditions.

But the OPSIN is about more than simple observation. It offers recording and navigation technology and the digital display is easy to see and read. This allows you to make adjustments quickly and easily, all without losing track of your surroundings. Plus, the EAR99 classification makes OPSIN night-vision equipment available globally with minimal restrictions on law enforcement and military end users.

“Digital night vision is a nascent technology with exploding demand and endless opportunity to evolve,” says Gio Lepore, global product manager for SIONYX. “The rapid development of new technologies and increasing interconnectedness across defense systems demands digital night-vision integration. Operators today rely on technologies that improve their levels of situational awareness and intel with the least number of devices and maintenance. OPSIN, paired with the companion mobile app, also allows for flexible firmware updates, so as we develop our digital capabilities and improve image processing the unit can be updated in the field. There’s no need to acquire a new device.”

OPSIN’s extra-large 1920x1080 HD micro-OLED display and broad field of view make it easy to survey surroundings, and the user can adjust features like frame rate (30/60/90 per second) without being distracted. This level of performance is making it easier for military and law enforcement professionals to do their job safely and efficiently, and it’s one of the reasons SIONYX is a leader in the night-vision market segment. WILDGAME INNOVATIONS

Twenty-two years ago while I was a biology student at the University of Cincinnati I spent a summer collecting data on wildlife movement from “camera traps.” At the time, these cameras were rudimentary and generally failed to seal out moisture. Shutter speed was biased toward low-light shooting, so any fast movement resulted in a blurred images. Worst of all, checking pictures meant pulling film from the cameras to have developed.

It's hard to believe that was just two decades ago when you consider today’s advanced trail cameras, and one of the leaders in that arena is Wildgame Innovations. The company’s Terra camera is network-certified by both Verizon and AT&T so you can pick your favorite provider. Both models are supported by Wildgame Innovations’ HuntSmart app so you can see images in real time with service plans starting at just $12 a month. So long as there is Verizon or AT&T service, the camera can also send images to T-Mobile, Sprint, or other carriers. The HuntSmart app is capable of storing and sorting pictures and even recognizing species. What’s more, the camera comes with solar panels that send 20mp pictures directly to your phone without ever having to change a battery.

Even if you aren’t interested in cellular cameras with monthly plans, Wildgame Innovations offers modern trail cameras with advanced features. Their new Mirage camera shoots 30mp images and 720p HD video and features a 12-volt jack that allows for the use of solar panels just like the Terra. However, perhaps the most amazing thing about this camera is the price, which is under $90. Booth #12669 (wildgameinnovations.com)

STEINER

We’re continuing to see improvements in the design and function of red-dot reflex optics, and one example is Steiner’s MPS, or Micro Pistol Sight. Its all-metal construction and closed walls protect the emitter from dirt and debris, ensuring a clear field of view under all conditions. In addition, the body features a “hood” that further protects the recessed front lens, further ensuring that end users will be able to see clearly and get on target quickly when using this red-dot sight. The controls are easy to use and allow you to toggle quickly through the eight different brightness settings. Battery life is an outstanding 13,000 hours, so you won’t have to worry about running low on power at the most inopportune time, and of course these optics use high-quality Steiner glass. The MPS’s rugged and durable design make it appealing, but what’s perhaps most impressive is that this unit weighs in at just 2.05 ounces. It’s designed to fit Aimpoint ACRO footprints, but there’s an included mounting plate that allows you to use Doctor-style footprints as well. Just how good is the MPS? Well, this optic has been approved by Texas’s Lubbock and Cross Roads Police Departments as well as the Arlington SWAT department. Clearly, law-enforcement agencies see the value in today’s lightweight, durable red-dot reflex sights like the innovative new MPS from Steiner. Booth #13031 (steiner-optics.com)

CAMP CHEF

Outdoor cooking used to be a rudimentary process over a grill, in a smoker, or over an open flame. That’s still a great way to cook, but we all know that our busy lives don’t always allow us to spend hours hovering over our food to cook it perfectly.

That’s where Camp Chef’s Woodwind Pro smoker comes in. It’s equipped with a WiFi-enabled PID controller so you can monitor cooking through the Camp Chef Connect app. You can also choose from 10 different levels of smoke, and the patent-pending Smoke Box allows you to add hardwood chunks or charcoal for the type of complex smoke flavoring that wins competitions and keeps the best chefs behind Camp Chef grills. Another feature that top chefs demand from their smoker is even heat, and the Woodwind Pro provides that with double-wall construction, a gasketed lid, and “down and out” ventilation. Available temperatures range from 160 to 500 degrees, so you can cook meat low and slow or fast and high. A 22-pound hopper keeps plenty of pellets on tap when needed, and the Woodwind Pro is Camp Chef Sidekick compatible. The all-new Woodwind Pro 24 offers 811 square inches of total rack surface area and a chamber capacity of 4,850 cubic inches while the larger Woodwind 36 boasts 1,236 square inches of rack space and a chamber capacity of 7,000 cubic inches. Both grills allow for easy cleanout of ash. Advanced technology has found its way into Camp Chef’s new smoker, and every carnivore is better off for it. Booth #11838 (campchef.com)

HAWKE OPTICS

Reflex sights have become so popular on handguns that they’re practically considered standard equipment, and that’s a good thing. You can, with practice, shoot a handgun more quickly with a reflex sight than you can with iron sights, and reflex sights offer an illuminated aiming point in any light conditions. Shooters and hunters with aging eyes also find that reflex sights are much easier to see, and for the substantial percentage of shooters who are cross-eye dominant a reflex sight can be very beneficial.

Over time, reflex sights have evolved to be tougher and more user-friendly. One complaint that many shooters have when first using reflex sights is that the narrow window makes it hard to see the dot and limits peripheral visibility. But Hawke Optics has an answer to that in the form of their Reflex Sight Wide View. This optic features 25-layer multi-coated lenses and comes with a 2 MOA dot. The aluminum housing is lightweight, which keeps overall weight to just 3 ounces, and that means it won’t add a lot of bulk to your firearm. The Picatinny rail attachment allows you to secure this sight to most shotguns and rifles, and it’s perfect for turkey, hog, and deer hunting to moderate range. But there are a growing number of target and hunting handguns equipped with rails from companies like Ruger, Taurus, and Smith & Wesson, and this sight is ideal for those guns. The new Hawke reflex sight has eight different brightness settings that can be adjusted with the touch of a button, allowing you to find the perfect brightness to match ambient light conditions. STREAMLIGHT

Human beings rely more heavily on vision than any other sense, which is why good lights are so important. Streamlight offers a number of innovative lighting products including their new TLR-8 sub and TLR G sub weapons-mounted lights. Designed for today’s popular micro-compact pistols, these lights provide 500 lumens and 5,000 candela of white light that is focused directly ahead. What’s more, in addition to their intense main beam (which reaches to 141 meters) these lights also offer enough peripheral illumination that they light up a room, perfect for house-clearing exercises during home-defense situations.

In addition to their white light capabilities, the TLR-8 sub family offers the added benefit of a laser. The TLR-8 sub comes with a red laser while the TLR-8 G sub comes with a green laser, and the unit can be set to activate the light, laser, or both simultaneously as needed. Activation is simple, thanks to the included switches which ride alongside the left and right edges of the front of the pistol’s trigger guard. There are also high- and low-tail switches that can be changed out depending upon the end user’s preference. Power comes via a 3V lithium CR123A battery with a life of up to 60 hours, and the light doesn’t need to be removed from the firearm to change the battery. Adjusting point of impact is fast and easy using the included wrench. Micro-compact pistols are designed to be lightweight, and at 2.77 ounces the TLR-8 sub doesn’t add much bulk to your firearm. These light/laser combos are easy to install, constructed from rugged 6000 series aircraft grade aluminum, and make your personal defense firearm much more versatile and functional. PERSONAL TRENDS IN DEFENSE

These days, Americans are obsessed with personal security— and with good reason.

Today’s world is filled with dangers ranging from riots to car jackings to random unprovoked street assaults. And the misguided “Defund the Police” movement is only making things worse. As a result, more and more Americans are better equipping themselves to defend against these threats. The more than five million new gun owners who purchased a first firearm in recent years bears proof to this “you-are-on-your-own” reality.

So, what’s trending in personal defense that can help anyone better prepare for the potential problems? Firearms, the right accessories, and more are the answers for many. As a retailer, all this behooves you to keep up with this trend to better serve your customers.

“Lots of people are getting into the AR-platform firearms—and AR-style pistols—including more and more women,” says Alex Cobb, a reserve deputy in western North Carolina and a certified firearms safety instructor who teaches numerous firearms courses that are always filled to capacity. “They are buying those for home-defense purposes.”

He also indicates that stun guns and pepper spr ays are frequent topics in his personal-safety classes, as are concealed-carry purses and all types of accessories designed with women in mind.

“Women are also interested in holsters that work for them, because women’s clothing does not permit pistols concealed in a pocket like a man’s jeans often do,” says Cobb.

He also indicated that small safes for in-home use (in or around the nightstand) and in vehicles continue to be trending.

A leader in the AR/MSR market category is Springfield Armory (Booth #11217). The company’s Saint rifle and Hellion AR pistol are both garnering a lot of attention.

DAY 3, JANUARY 19, 2023 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ 41

 Versacarry offers a wide range of holsters, including several styles of shoulder holsters that are once again gaining attention.

HOLSTERS

More and more pistol owners are adding red-dot sights to their firearms, so holster manufacturers are offering optics-ready holsters. Technology has also entered the holster arena.

“1791 Gunleather is now offering ultra-custom Light Bearing Holsters that can be shaped to fit—and hold—nearly any firearm,” says Janette Palmer, 1791 Gunleather’s national sales manager (Booth #75207) . “These holsters use Memory-Lok technology and can also be remolded to fit nearly any firearm with a light, laser sight, and any under-rail-mounted accessory. The uses are nearly unlimited because you heat these holsters inside a bag that is submerged in a hot-water bath (not the microwave) to reshape them.” The company also markets a unique optic-ready paddle holster and a smaller BHC Multi-fit belt holster designed for carrying and securely holding a wide range of compact pistols.

Another holster manufacturer, Versacarry (Booth #12211) , offers a wide range of holsters, including several styles of shoulder holsters that are once again gaining attention. The company also offers the Modular Bag Holster, a holster that will adjust to fit nearly any handgun and that can be securely placed in any bag, including purses and backpacks. The holster secures to the selected bag with Velcro and an adhesive patch.

SMALL SAFES, BIG PROTECTION

Vehicle break-ins—even into law-enforcement vehicles—are rising because criminals are searching for guns. The number of small invehicle safes available on the market is rapidly growing. Manufacturers, like Tuffy Security Products (Booth #41650) , offer specialized safes to fit specific vehicles, including under the backseat of a Ford F-150. The company also manufactures full replacement consoles

for a wide range of vehicles that are lockable and nearly indestructible.

Tuffy’s vehicle safes are small, easy to carry, and lock inside any vehicle with a stout provided cable. SnapSafe (a division of Hornady) also offers similar models (Booth #12446) . These safes can be locked to the base of a vehicle seat and pushed under for out-of-sight security. Gunowners, as well as travelers with valuables, are finding many uses for these affordable and functional safes. Browning (Booth #10938) also offers a small portable pistol safe—the ProSteelPV Portable Pistol Vault with a key lock for around $75.

Also worth noting is the trend in gun cases that do not look like standard gun cases. These are becoming increasingly popular in states with so-called “red-flag” laws where nosy neighbors can turn in anyone they see with a firearm or gun case. These incognito gun cases look much like musical instrument cases, sports equipment, or medical-device containers. Hazard’s Battle Axe guitar-shaped gun case is a good example. (Booth #31103)

CANDID CAMERA

Camera systems installed near a homeowner’s front door are also garnering attention. All types of home-security cameras are available, most of which are easy to install.

Innovative homeowners are now using many of the widely available trail cameras with phone-call capabilities to remotely watch—and instantly report movement—at places ranging from a backcountry cabin to their backyards and

backdoors. The uses are nearly unlimited for these trail cameras, some of which are now offered in gray rather than camo, and the technology and features are evolving rapidly. GSM Outdoors/Muddy (Booth #12669) is one such supplier. Their Morph, Merge, and Manifest cameras are packed with technology. Outdoor Technology Limited (Booth #42163) offers

cameras, and the new gray ODE-4GLTE 4G trail camera can be used for home surveillance and is operated via an app.

SHIELDED SAFETY

Shopping centers, schools, many public sports facilities, and other public places are often classified as gun-free zones, so those bent on doing harm to others start their mayhem in those areas. The result: more and more shoppers, adults of all ages, and school kids are carrying or using body armor and bulletproof protective plates.

There are several sources for these protective products, such as Premier Body Armor (Booth #75313) , Streetwise Security Products (Booth #40705) , and Guard Dog Security (Booth #72621) . All sell inserts that can be slipped inside any daypack, briefcase, purse, or gym

bag. Most plates are up to level IIIA protection, but various levels of protection are available, and trauma pads are also offered. In case you are wondering, there are also stab-resistant plates available. This market segment will continue to gain attention and grow.

Another new innovation in personal-protection armor is Premier Body Armor’s Everyday Armor T-shirt. It is made in the USA and provides Level IIIA protection without awkwardness or having to adjust lifestyles as some bulletproof vests require. The T- shirt is constructed of a proprietary moisture-wicking, anti-microbial compression fabric with two armor pockets (front and rear) that are specifically designed to accept Premier Body Armor's Level IIIA (7.75x12.75-inch) vital-protection ballistic inserts. The new Everyday Armor T-Shirt weighs less than one pound and is only .22-inch thick. SRP: $279.

EDC KNIVES

In tandem with the growth in concealed-carry firearms, we’re seeing a surge in everyday carry knives (EDC) as well. Buck Knives (Booth #13651) , a leader in this area, recently released several new knife models based on customer

requests. Many EDC knives are lightweight and have a single, long, drop-point blade. Many models are folders equipped with a pocket clip so that the knife can be secured inside a pocket but at the same time be readily available. These knives also tend to be thin and easy to open. The company also offers automatic knifes (not switchblades) that open with a push of a button.

LIGHT THE NIGHT

Many attacks and unexpected encounters happen during night because bad guys like operating under the cover of darkness. This behavior has led to more and more gun owners carrying small pocket flashlights as a supplementary means of personal protection.

A top lighting source is Streamlight (Booth #11468) . The company’s new waterproof Wedge light produces 300 lumens of bright white LED light for up to three hours. Designed for in-pocket carry, the Wedge is approximately five inches long, weighs a mere three ounces, and has a retention clip.

SAFE STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Although multi-gun and long-gun vaults from sources like Browning (Booth #10938) and

Cannon (Booth #10916) continue to find their places in many homes, the homeowner with only a pistol and a few valuables requires smaller options, such as between-the-wall-studs safes that can be installed in about an hour in a closet or behind a large framed photo on a wall. You must cut sheetrock, inset the safe, and bolt it to the wall studs. Numerous sizes and styles are available, and there is even a newer model designed to hold long guns. These systems continue the outof-sight, out-of-mind trend in valuables storage for many homeowners. Homak Security (Booth #10318), Stack-On (Booth #10916), Hayman Safes (Booth #75526), and SnapSafe are some manufacturers that are leading the trend.

Some gun owners and homeowners are also turning closets and other spaces into saferooms and larger gun vaults. The trend is up also for installable vault doors from sources such as Browning and SnapSafe. Browning’s Vault door uses 22 locking bolts for the ultimate in security. SnapSafe’s Aux Vault Door weighs in at 350 pounds and features a 12-gauge steel door and door frame.

Upgrades PISTOL SIGHT HOW TO SELL

According to a report released by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), at least 5.4 million people purchased a firearm for the first time in 2021. Nearly 30 percent of all firearms purchased last year went to new gun owners. Many of those new firearms owners purchased a handgun for self-defense. Similar numbers of new gun buyers were seen in 2020, and handguns also made up a large percentage of those buys.

Now that the new handgun owners have had time to become familiar with the firearm they bought and begin to enjoy the many benefits of gun ownership, some are now returning to gun shops to make upgrades, including new sights. Are you properly serving these customers?

You should.

Some new handgun owners have discovered difficulty in patterning tight groups on their target or are struggling to see the rear and front sights at the same time when shooting. Your inventory of handgun sights could offer the upgrades—from fiber optics and tritium replacement sights to red-dot sights and lasers—that will help these customers overcome those sighting issues.

46 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ DAY 3, JANUARY 19, 2023
Consumers have a lot of options. So, too, do retailers.

The first step is to ascertain the primary purpose of the handgun. Is the owner interested in self-defense or will the gun be used for casual plinking or competition? The second step is knowing the full details of the handgun, be it revolver or semi-auto, on which your customer wishes to install new sights. If they don’t have the gun with them, ask them for the make, model, and the year it was made. You can’t really help them select the right sight without this information. If they are fuzzy on the details, pull up the manufacturer’s product information website page where you can verify a model’s features and year of production. This is important, as manufacturers often change grips, frame sizes, slide dimensions, and other parts of a handgun line from year to year, and those changes will determine what new sights you can—or cannot—install on the handgun the customer wishes to upgrade.

For example, Springfield Armory’s Hellcat Compact pistol (Booth #11217) permits the owner to change front and rear sights or add a reddot sight into a slot-cut feature atop the slide. Springfield Armory also recently released upgrade slides for some of the company’s other pistol models, and those new slides have optics-ready slots cut into the slide’s top. Some pistols, such as Ruger’s Security-9 (Booth #72327), have built-in rails under the muzzle and ahead of the trigger guard that will permit customers—or you and your employees—to install various lights and some laser sights. Some Kimber pistols (Booth #11268) are also equipped with rails. Unfortunately, many compact pocket pistols with polymer slides have molded sights that cannot be replaced. This is an

opportunity to offer your customer a trade-in deal or a chance to buy a new firearm that better meets their needs.

The third step is to discuss the various sight options. There are three basic types: reflex (red dot) sights, fiber-optic and tritium sights, and lasers.

Reflex sights, also known as dot sights or red dots, use a dot reticle that the user places on the target to take the shot. Reflex sights have no magnification but offer unlimited eye relief. They are easy to use and are a good choice

 Replacement-grip lasers for revolvers and pistols fit a wide range of guns from smaller pocket pistols to the iconic full-size 1911.

for older shooters who have problems aligning iron sights.

Reflex sights also are compact, lightweight, and have a small footprint. Dot reticles come in a variety of sizes and colors. Though often referred to as red dots (the original models featured red dots only), newer versions can also be had with green and blue dots. Bushnell (Booth #11838), Sightmark (Booth #11419), Leapers UTG (Booth #72305), Burris (Booth #13227), and Leupold (Booth #12421) are good choices. So is EOTECH (Booth #20049) (Technically, the EOTECH version is an LED, rather than a reflex, sight, but it serves the same purpose.)

Fiber-optic and tritium sights are available in various styles and colors (red and green are most common), and customers only need to place the glowing front sight between the two dots—or atop the single post—normally seen on the rear sight. This permits quick alignment of the three dots (sights) for shooting. A fiber-optic sight seems to glow as you aim because the fibers contained in the tube gather available light, making the sight more visible in low-light conditions. You should stock a wide variety of styles from manufacturers like Tru-Glo (Booth #12669), Trijicon (Booth #10735), and Hi-Viz (Booth #14222).

Tritium sights generally provide two rear white dots and one larger front white dot on the back of the front sight post. Those dots of radioactive tritium glow in total darkness and appear standard white

Red laser sights are normally more affordable than green laser sights. Green laser sights are often more visible in brighter light.

during daylight conditions. Many standard LE and military pistols use these sights to aid with sight alignment. XS Sights (Booth #13624) is a good source. So are Trijicon (Booth #10735), Night Vision (Booth #40926), TruGlo (12669), and Ameriglo (Booth #10735). Fiber optic and tritium sights are a more affordable option than lasers and most models do not change the profile of the handgun.

Laser sights are available in three basic models: replacement grips with a built-in laser sight, laser sights that mount onto the trigger guard, and a laser sight that attaches to a rail on the firearm. In most cases, laser sight manufacturers recommend that the accessory rail be at least one-inch long to ensure a secure fit.

Replacement-grip lasers for revolvers and pistols fit a wide range of guns from smaller pocket pistols to the iconic full-size 1911. In most cases, the replacement grips require the use of a screwdriver or Torx driver to remove the old grips from the frame. You then install the new grips and reinsert the screws. This remove-and-install process generally takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

For the compact laser sight units—these are generally the size of a box of matches—determine if the pistol has an accessory rail and if the laser sight attached to the rail is easy to reach with a finger and activate. The standard rails found on most pistols are Weaver and Picatinny rails. There are also laser and light combination products that can be installed on nearly any firearm with an accessory rail. An advantage to the buyer is that these laser sight-and-light combo units can often be easily removed from one firearm with accessory rails and installed on another firearm with rails.

If the pistol can use a laser sight that attaches to the trigger guard, you may want to do the installation in house. These are often two-piece units that first require installation of the battery, then snapping the halves over the trigger guard. You then install several small screws to secure the laser sight in place. You may need a very small screwdriver to install the screws.

Another question: should the customer buy a green or red laser sight? Red laser sights are normally more affordable and use less battery power than green laser sights. They are also generally more available in a wider range of models to fit a larger number of pistols. Green laser sights are often more visible in brighter light, but they tend to be more expensive and use battery power quicker. At this point, it is entirely appropriate to ask if the customer is color blind, in which case the purchase of this product is problematic.

Battery type is also important. Many sights run on easy-to-find, standard lithium and wafer-style batteries. Some laser sights, however, require special from-the-manufacturer-only batteries that can be expensive and difficult to obtain.

Several laser sight manufacturers, such as Streamlight (Booth #11468), Viridian (Booth #10167), and Crimson Trace (Booth #12805), offer laser sight-and-light combination units. If the customer is often alone late at night in dark parking garages or will be closing a business after hours, this option is well worth consideration. If the customer shows interest here, remind them that the overall size of the firearm and its shape will change, and it may not no longer easily fit into a holster, pocket, handbag, vehicle glovebox, or a nightstand.

LAST DETAILS

Once you—or your employees—have the precise handgun model information in hand, the hunt for new sights can begin. Now is the time to look at options you sell (or can order quickly) and to determine a ballpark price the customer is willing to spend. You must also determine if you can install the sights under consideration or will have to refer the customer to a gunsmith.

Be sure to let the customer know that installing new front, rear, or rail- or slide-mounted sights could change the profile of the gun, which could require the purchase of a new holster. If the customer plans to carry the handgun concealed, determine if any new sight being considered for installation

could snag on clothing or otherwise make drawing more difficult.

This is also the best point in a sales discussion to show your customer some sight options. When possible, have the fiber-optic sights, laser sights, or red dots installed on a firearm (or a blue gun) and let the customer see the sights with their eyes and feel the gun in their hands.

Sight activation is also an important consideration. Does the sight have an auto-activation feature? If not, explain in detail how the sight can be turned on. In the case of some lasers, there are tabs and activation pads that naturally fall under a finger when the firearm is gripped normally. That ease of operation and activation also becomes more important during times of stress.

Make sure to tell the customer that new sights must be properly zeroed and that practice is required to become a proficient shot. Obviously, no mention of practice would be complete without asking whether they need ammunition, and, if you have access to a range, would they like to reserve a lane and time.

Above all, make sure that you and your staff welcome these new shooters with open arms. They’ll pay you back in the long run for your courtesy and interest in meeting their needs and wants.

A GUIDE TO SELLING CONCEALED CARRY

HOLSTERS

Selecting a gun for concealed carry is the most crucial part of the process, but picking the right holster is a very close second. You’ve got to have a solid and safe way to carry your gun; if not, then all the careful consideration you gave to gun selection is irrelevant. There are myriad options to choose from, and it can be easy to get overwhelmed trying to decide on material, carry style, and carry position, to name only three considerations. As a retailer, your job is to help your new CCW customer select a holster that best fits their everyday carry needs. Here’s a rundown of some of the most popular materials, styles, and positions for concealed carry holsters to help you get a good grasp on the basics that can help your staff match the customer to the right holster.

LEATHER VERSUS KYDEX

Leather holsters have been around for hundreds of years; Kydex, a type of thermoplastic, is a relative newcomer. As the tried-and-true material in the holster market, you can’t go wrong with a leather holster. On the whole, leather is a very durable material that holds up well over time. It’s sturdy yet supple and is comfortable to wear. However, leather is more susceptible to moisture, such as sweat and rain, meaning that a user will have to condition it from time to time to keep it in optimal shape for a lifetime of concealed carry.

Kydex is the polar opposite of leather. A rigid plastic-type material, it is formed to the shape of a gun with heat for a perfect fit with a level of durability that will probably outlive us all. It is impervious to moisture, so the user won’t have to worry about the climate, and long-term care is essentially nonexistent. Because it’s a plastic, though, it can be less comfortable to wear; it does not give at all like leather does.

Some holster companies offer hybrid holsters that pair leather backings with Kydex shells to give the best of both worlds. These have become incredibly popular, and for good reason.

INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE WAISTBAND

Inside the waistband (IWB) and outside the waistband (OWB) are the two main methods of holster carry, but don’t feel like you’ve got to limit yourself to one or the other. OWB is generally the more comfortable and easier of the two because the holster doesn’t come into direct contact with the body and you don’t need to make any adjustments to the waist size of your pants. However, you will need a bigger cover garment because the holster will be sitting proud on the waistline.

IWB lends itself to better concealment because the majority of the holster and gun are concealed in your pants. However, this means you’ll need to buy pants that are a few inches bigger in the waist to

accommodate the holster. You’ll also have to get used to the holster sitting closer to your body, which means you may need to experiment with different positions before you find the one that’s most comfortable.

SHOULDERS AND ANKLES

When it comes to shoulder holsters and ankle rigs, those types of holsters might conjure up images of Miami Vice and law enforcement. Don’t let that deter you; they are great options for “regular” people, too.

Shoulder holsters are a good way to get the weight of the gun and spare ammo off of the waistline and distribute it evenly across the shoulders. This kind of setup is a great option for someone who works in a professional setting and has to wear a jacket or suit coat all day long.

Ankle holsters are good for smaller guns such as micro pistols or snub-nose revolvers. They’re also more suited to a backup gun; they are not a primary location of concealment because of how far your ankles are from your arms when standing.

OFF-BODY

A rigid plastictype material, such as Kydex, is another popular option. It is formed to the shape of a gun with heat for a perfect fit.

is easy to conceal the gun, and easy for the user to draw the gun when needed. The exact kind of holster that does all of the above will vary from person to person, so don’t be afraid to ask the customer about how they intend to carry concealed.

As you and your customer move through this process, bear in mind that picking a concealed-carry holster is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. In fact, there’s probably just as many variables that go into picking a holster as go into picking a concealed-carry gun in the first place.

The simple fact of the matter is that many customers will not own just one concealed carry

holster. They’re going to end up experimenting with different holster materials, different carry positions, etc. In fact, they may end up with multiple holsters for the same gun. This is a situation in which all concealed carriers find themselves. The world of holster design and development is ever-changing. When you couple that with the fact that a lifestyle change may require a change in carry methods, it’s easy to see why holsters are rarely a one-and-done proposition. Your best approach is to listen to the customer’s carry needs and then help them figure out what works best for them.

Sometimes you might find yourself in a situation where carrying the gun in a holster that is attached somewhere to the body isn’t feasible. This is where off-body holsters come into the picture. There are a number of different types of daypacks, purses, and padfolios that are tailor-made with built-in holsters. These items can be very convenient, but they also require the owner to be vigilant. Because the gun is not literally attached to you at all times, you need to be extra aware of where you’re setting your pack, purse, or padfolio down so that the gun is not inadvertently picked up by someone else or stolen by a neer-do-well.

As you work through the various options, don’t assume that women only want off-body solutions. Stress the fact that whatever holster they choose, it must comfortable to wear. If it’s not comfortable, they won’t wear it. The same (or nearly so) goes for off-body options. Here, the gun must be easily and quickly accessed.

The best kind of concealed carry holster is one that holds the gun securely, is comfortable to wear,
