AGNI Agni = Fire General Term used in Ayurveda Jathara Agni - central fire Digestion + Agni


AGNI “Life-span, complexion, strength, health, enthusiasm, luster, immunity, energy, heat processes and vital breath – all depend on body-fire. One dies if this fire is extinguished, lives long free from disorders if it is functioning properly, gets ill if it is deranged, hence Agni is the root cause of All.”

CATEGORIES OF AGNI There are four basic categories of Agni. Ayurveda offers 4 ways to understanding our digestive capacity, our fire to digest what we eat. SAMA VISHAMA TIKSHNA MANDA


Sama Agni - Balanced Healthy Agni leads to: • Excellent digestion • Normal elimination • Proper tissue formation • Good circulation and body temperature • High energy • Strong immunity • Good complexion • Pleasant body odor and breath • Intelligence, Memory and Perception • Clear and calm mind + senses


Vishama - Vāta •Digestion varies from slow to normal • Constipation • Abdominal distention • Colicky pain • Heaviness | bloating • Gurgling sound in the intestines • Variable appetite • Can skip meals • Anxiety and fear


Tikshna - Pitta • • • • • • • •

Can digest large quantities easily Frequent meals necessary Heating or burning sensations after eating Voracious hunger Cannot skip meals Inflammatory conditions Mind and emotions present irritability Raw/undigested food can be seen in stool


Manda - Kapha • Cannot digest food easily • Food causes feeling of heaviness in stomach • Heaviness and dullness in head • Excess salivation • Weakness in the body • Tendency to gain weight

1. Irregular appetite and Irregular digestion 2. Abdominal distention and discomfort during digestion 3. Constipation 4. Increased intestinal peristalsis 5. Brown and black coating on back side of tongue 6. Anxiety, fear, insecurity 7. Arthritics, LB, sciatica and vata disorders 8. Difficult to digest protein

1. Strong appetite and poor digestion 2. During digestion there is acid reflux or acid indigestion 3. Diarrhea 4. Intestinal burning sensation 5. Centrally yellowish coating on the tongue but tip is red 6. Anger, hate, and irritability 7. Hives, rash, urticarial, eczema and other pitta conditions 8. Difficult to digest fat and oily foods

1. Slow appetite and sluggish digestion 2. During digestion there is a sense of heaviness and mind becomes 3. Mucoid stool 4. Slow intestinal activity 5. Whole tongue is heavily coated 6. Attachment, greed, possessiveness and depression 7. Cold, congestion, cough and other kapha disorders 8. Difficult to digest milk and carbohydrates
