New Lemont pastor pushed to ministry after avoiding tragedy About Van RESIDENCE: Bolingbrook EDUCATION: Master’s degree of divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston FAMILY: Married to Christian; daughters Kexia, Evangeline, Marcella, Hannah and Kristen HOBBIES: Cooking, reading, horseback riding and traveling

LEMONT — After she walked away from two serious car accidents in a two-week period in 2007, Kelly Van said she knew she needed to give back to God. She felt spared. In the first accident, Van explained she was driving her twin daughters to a band camp when her tire popped as she was driving 80 miles per hour. Her vehicle drove into a truck, hit a guard rail and hit the same truck again. Van and her daughters somehow escaped injury.

STREET TALK If legislation passes allowing medical marijuana facilities in Illinois, what do you think about one opening in Lemont?

Two weeks later, Van said she hit a slippery spot on an expressway exit, spinning her can into oncoming traffic. “I was turned around heading towards the people coming off the exit,” Van said. “God stopped all the cars from coming towards me; no cars were there.” The accidents were life-changing for Van, and pushed her to go into ministry, just as her grandfather, father and husband had done, despite reluctance because of her culture. “I am Vietnamese and in my culture, woman are not in an executive position,” Van said.

“I think for severe cancer or pain patients they should have it easily accessible but regulated by a doctor.” Jeanie Duran Lemont

In 2009, she enrolled at GarrettEvangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. Van graduated in May 2012 with her master’s degree in divinity. On Dec. 1, Van was selected to become the next pastor of Lemont United Methodist Church. After spending only one month in the church so far, Van said she is home. “I feel it’s a perfect match; a pastor with the church is like a marriage and this is a perfect match,” Van said. Lemont United Methodist Church provides a place of worship but also opens its doors for preschool and those in need. Every

“I have no problem with that. I think marijuana should be legalized and we wouldn’t have as many problems as we do now.” Sue Kelbus Lemont

Tuesday through Thursday, the church offers a food pantry to residents in need. “That’s my passion in ministry is with the homeless and early childhood education,” Van said. Van said her primary goal as new pastor is to increase attendance — she said numbers have fallen to less than 100 every Sunday. She wants to get out into the community to bring back those who have left, while recruiting new members. “I am very content here,” Van said. “To me this is (God’s) blessing in abundance for me.”

“I don’t see it happening in Lemont. I don’t see the | residents allowing it in their town because of the image and their children.” Pam Newman Lemont

Geologists share lessons with Oakwood students By JANICE HOPPE jhoppe@shawmedia.com

LEMONT — The world of geology leaped off the textbook pages and came to life Oakwood School first-graders this week. Four scientists from High Touch High Tech, a science education franchise, spent the day teaching and providing hands-on science experiments to eight first-grade classrooms Tuesday. The students were able to examine different kinds of rocks, sift through water and sand to find gems and property test rocks by scratching them with a penny. “We got to see all the cool stuff in the rocks,” first-grader Nathan Rath said. “You don’t see them very often, the shiny and colored ones.” Sifting through the sand and water to reveal gems, Harrison Nowakowski said he found different colored and shaped rocks. “I hoped to look at sand and rocks,” Nowakowski said. “But my favorite part was seeing the gems.” The experiments tailored to the sand, pebbles and silt unit the first-graders are currently learning about in science class. First-grade teacher Marg Cunningham applied for a Science, Technology Engineering and Math grant through the District 113A Educational Foundation to make the visit possible. The $1,500 grant was funded through the Oxbow Corporation in Lemont. Cunningham said the experiments with on-site field trips are a bit more staged rather than on an off-campus field trip where the students could have dug in the dirt to find rocks. However, she said, having the experiments brought to campus allows for more time to educate the students. “Here they have a lot more mineral samples than they would have found in a forest preserve,” Cunningham said. “They were able to do more sorting and property testing on a wider range of things they found here than if they were out in the field.” Oakwood School Principal Cathy Slee

D-113A to determine new teacher hires in spring By JANICE HOPPE jhoppe@shawmedia.com

Share your thoughts

LEMONT — District 113A will wait until the completion of its strategic and staffing plans in March to determine whether to seek approval from the state to hire additional teachers. A letter from the Illinois State Board of Education states that since the district decided not to hire additional staff for the 2012-13 school year, the state suggests the district hold off until the spring to request additional hires due to the late timing in this school year and send an updated financial plan at that time. Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said the district chose to wait until spring to request additional hires, if that still meets the priorities of the district. “We recognize it would be hard to achieve what we set forward to do to reduce class size this year, it’s a complicated activity and (moving forward with a request is not) something we want to move forward with at this time,” Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier said during Tuesday night’s meeting. The letter from the state comes nearly a year after District 113A sought ISBE’s approval to add five teaching positions for the 2012-13 school year. But due to the timing of ISBE’s response, the state suggested adding the additional staff next school year and finalize a staffing plan in the spring. ISBE has yet to give the district approval regarding hiring five

teachers or any number of staffing for the next school year. In determining whether additional staffing is a priority, Birkenmaier said the district is currently working through its strategic planning process that outlines specific district goals and how those will be achieved — which will determine whether additional staffing is required and in which areas. “It doesn’t have to be a classroom teacher,” Birkenmaier said if additional staffing is required. “What do we need? We have to analyze that.” She said until the plan is complete on March 1, the district does not know what resources, including staffing, will be needed to achieve those goals. “Right now we are in the ‘what does it look like stage’,” Birkenmaier said. “What will it take to achieve those goals and then we can get to the place where we can say (what we need).” Budgeting for the additional staff will be determined through the strategic and staffing plans. Birkenmaier said staff is still determining what resources the district has available in terms of funding.

State gives D-113A deferment option to repay ‘unallowable claims’ LEMONT — To avoid overlapping payments, the Illinois State Board of Education will allow District 113A to defer payments for money it owes to the state for unallowable transportation claims the district was granted in fiscal years 2009 and 2010. The move allows the district to avoid further depletion of its transportation fund. District 113A was in danger of not receiving any transportation reimbursements from the state while also owing another $70,000 to the state. The state approved the district’s request to defer payments from Fiscal 2010 until the unallowable claims from Fiscal 2009 are repaid. In December 2011, board members were informed the district owed ISBE $328,956 for transportation cost reimbursements it should not have received from the state in Fiscal Year 2009. One month later, the district determined it owed another $260,705 to the state for unallowable transportation claims made in Fiscal 2010. Deferment of the Fiscal 2010 payments will extend the repayment period into Fiscal 2016.

Congressman Lipinski talks Metra, canal issues for new constituency By JANICE HOPPE jhoppe@shawmedia.com

Local transportation issues — along the Heritage Corridor Metra Line and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal — will be the key targets for Congressman Dan Lipinski in his new 3rd Congressional District, which now includes Lemont. Lipinski, re-elected to the new 3rd District in November, met with the editorial staff of the Lemont Reporter/Met Jan. 18 to discuss local issues and his new constituency. As a senior member of the House of Representatives’ Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Lipinski spoke at length about efforts to expand Metra service — only three Metra trains run in the morning and three run in the evening, with no weekend service, along the Heritage Corridor Line. “I now represent every stop on the Heritage Corridor Line and it has been a big issue,” Lipinski said. “The Heritage Corridor has the least amount of service of any Metra line.” Earlier this month, Lipinski and newly

However, Canadian National maintains it cannot add Metra trains on the line unless federal funding can be secured for infrastructure upgrades to the railway, according to CN Spokesperson Patrick Waldron. Canadian National — which owns and manages the line — claims $150 million

worth of infrastructure upgrades are needed to add trains, Lipinski said. But he’s not buying it. “I think there are other things that can be done,” he said during the hour-long meeting. “There are not hundreds of millions of dollars anyone has to pay for infrastructure improvements on the Heritage Corridor. “Now we are the point in the next couple of weeks where it’s a matter of me putting pressure on CN to allow more trains.” From the rails to the water, Lipinski said he has also been keeping his eye on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal as the Asian Carp threatens to close the waterway. The Asian Carp, a bottom-feeder fish that can grow to 100 pounds and eats 40 percent of its body weight, poses a threat to the closure of the locks on the canal. “There are a lot more businesses along the canal than most know about,” Lipinski said. Lipinski also spoke of research and grant opportunities for Argonne National Laboratory in Darien. Lipinski is a member of the Committee on Science and Technology and holds a master’s degree in engineering from Stanford University.

“There is tremendous opportunity, even more than has been realized,” Lipinski said of Argonne. “We need to promote more research going on in the labs.” In November, Lipinski announced Argonne was chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy as an Energy Innovation Hub devoted to developing new battery technology for transportation. One month later, Lipinski announced Argonne, in partnership with the University of Chicago, received a $600,000 federal grant for a new research effort that will help decision-makers in urban areas better understand the impact of different policies in their communities. Finally, Lipinski discussed his desire to be accessible to his new constituents. To do so, he is hosting a grand opening for his office in Lockport today. Lipinski added that he will look to have a mobile office that will bounce from one community to another, with the goal of having staff in Lemont one day per week. “All I can do is reach out to all these new areas so they know who I am and what is available to them,” Lipinski said.

COREMatters program to help with social skills

To the Editor: We would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone who was there for us during our recent family loss. Very often words cannot express how thankful and appreciative we are for the kindness, thoughts and prayers of others. That is how we feel now. Every gesture helped us cope through this time of sorrow. Thank you so much.

The family of David P. O’Brien, Lemont

To the Editor: I congratulate U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk on his recovery from a severe stroke. My sister was hit by a drunk driver at 6 a.m. in the morning on a stretch of Ogden Avenue near Sandwich, Ill. The person who did this got a three-year sentence (DUI), and I am sure he is probably free by now to live the rest of his life any way he chooses. He was not ordered to pay any sort of restitution at the time of conviction, while my sister is stuck in a wheelchair in a body that no longer functions. Had my sister had the same opportunities afforded to Sen. Kirk as a member of Congress, I know that she would be better off today. She is limited to 10

Percussionists with the Old Quarry Middle School band program play during a recent practice. Sarah Minor — sminor@shawmedia.com

Thumbs Down — Learning to play an instrument and playing in a school band have been rites of passage for many students. But the band program at Old Quarry Middle School, part of LemontBromberek Combined School District 113A, has seen its membership decline over the past several years. Budget cuts in 2009 forced administrators to cut band as free program. Participants must now pay $355 each year. This is an unfortunate turn of events, and we encourage parents and community members to brainstorm and see if alternatives can be found. Thumbs Up — This comes as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with the facility. But Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont has been listed as one of America’s Top 50 Golf Ranges by Golf Range Magazine. Cog Hill hosted the Western Open from 1991 to 2006 and the renamed BMW Championship from 2007 to 2011. This is a well-deserved honor for one of the region’s premier golf courses.

Fourth-graders at River Valley School anticipated the return of The COREMatters Project on Jan. 22. The first visit from the program was such a huge success at River Valley School that they have brought back the 12-week program for their fourth-grade students. New children will have the opportunity to improve themselves with this program by working on their respect and resilience, with the outcome of the students gaining confidence, respect and an increase of physical ability. The COREMatters Project focuses on helping children replace the misconception Susan that bullying provides power, Birkenmaier with a true understanding and feeling of self-respect and a raised awareness of compassion and respect for others. River Valley School has seen a great amount of improvements in its students’ actions and how they respond to certain situations, which is why the COREMatters Project will be a continuous program at River Valley School. The COREMatters program incorporates the social and emotional skill development required to be included in the school curriculum as part of the Illinois Learning Standards. In addition to academic learning standards, the Illinois State Board of Education established the Illinois Learning Standards that sets forth three social and emotional skill development goals. These goals include developing self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success, using social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrating decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school and community contexts. In District 113A, educators, parents, students and community members share the responsibility to create a safe, supportive and enjoyable learning environment. All students will be challenged to grow academically, physically, socially and emotionally to become learners for life as well as productive and responsible citizens. This is achieved through visionary leadership, innovation, sound management and effective utilization of their talents and resources. The COREMatters program is funded through private donations collected by the COREMatters Project. Susan Birkenmaier is superintendent of LemontBromberek Combined School District 113A.

LEMONT — The Lemont Police Department has received several reports of suspicious calls being made to elderly residents looking for money to be wired or mailed to a specified location. The police said callers may identify themselves as being an agent of law enforcement or from a clearing house agency. The caller then tells the person to wire or mail them money and in return, they will mail the victim a larger sum of money. One of the numbers that appeared on caller ID was 860-924-2730. Police are alerting residents to hang up the phone and call the police using 9-1-1 or 630-257-2226 if the caller says they will come to your home to talk about giving them money. For more information contact Det. Noe Salinas or Sgt. Therese Thompson at 630257-2229.

physical therapy visits per year as a Medicaid patient, not nearly enough to keep her body from the atrophy that she continues to battle. She was discharged twice from same rehab institute that he had access to because as a Medicaid patient she had to make progress quickly or be evicted. Unfortunately for our family, she didn’t progress as quickly as they demanded. He is financially far better off than the average Illinois citizen. And even though he had what is considered excellent employersponsored health insurance, he had to dip into his savings and his retirement fund to pay out-of-pocket costs for care. I appreciate his promise to do something to help Illinois Medicaid enrollees who suffer strokes and who are not allowed the rehabilitation services he received. But we should also consider people with Medicare who face prohibitive co-pays or caps on

therapy sessions: workers, including the federal employees who work for our country who cannot afford the premiums for decent coverage under the FEHBP that he had. One reform, and one only, will serve these people and the millions of others who suffer premature death, permanent disability, homelessness, bankruptcy and other ills because the United States is the only industrialized country in the world to rely on the for-profit health insurance industry for our health system financing. I hope he will join his colleagues in the House and Senate who support a singlepayer health care system for the United States and work for passage of HR 676, or S915/HR1200. He has told stroke patients to not give up. I hope all Americans will not give up. TASTE OF THE TOWN

THE SWEET TASTE OF SUCCESS Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt

WHAT TO TRY

Address: 1235 W. Boughton Road, Bolingbrook Contact: 630-378-2080, www.yumzfrozenyogurt.com A guilt-free treat with a healthful twist is the inspiration behind Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt, which recently launched in several suburban locations. Patrons create their own dessert from a changing lineup of frozen yogurt flavors packed with live culture probiotics. It’s a family enterprise for Kevin Visel of St. Charles, who oversees all the ventures in Bolingbrook, Warrenville, South Elgin, Plainfield and Addison. His father, Daniel Visel, is the main franchise investor, and his sister, Lauren Visel, serves as site developer and a manager. “The self-serve yogurt concept is definitely a hot trend right now,” Kevin Visel says. “Yumz has a great product (and) a very fun and engaging store atmosphere.” The treats, priced at 42 cents an ounce, begin with a choice of 14 rotating yogurt flavors complemented by a selection of about 70 toppings such as fruits, nuts, sauces and dry tidbits. New yogurt flavors are continually added. “People can create a new masterpiece every time they come in,” he says. The frozen treats are available in four forms: tart — for the purist; regular— which tastes like ice cream; no-sugar-added yogurt for the extra health conscious; and sorbet for those who can’t enjoy dairy products. All are fat-free, and range between 85 and 100 calories per serving. The sorbet is a new touch, thanks to a request from Kevin Visel, whose daughter has dairy allergies. Sorbet flavors change daily. The Yumz venture is a career change for Visel, who used to own a photography business. “I enjoyed wedding photography,

CHIT-CHAT

GAINED IN TRANSLATION Texas twangs through Wagnerian tones to heat up ‘Das Barbecü’

W

hat do you get when you take a 15-hour opera storyline and rework it to fit into two hours set in a Texas honkytonk bar? The answer is “Das Barbecü,” a witty spin-off of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle, with book and lyrics by Jim Luigs, and music by Scott Warrender. With a score ranging from Broadway to Texas swing, jazz and country and western, the show is complete with a singin’ cowboy named Siegfried, Hagen’s Hideaway roadhouse, and a gaudy palace named Valhalla Ranch. Playing the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center, the adaptation is a comic take on Wagner’s series of four operas. Directed by Micheal Kott, the cast features Emily Goldberg, Dylan McGill, Drew Longo, Kristin Lutzeier and Morgan Briggs, of whom heroic demands are made. Although the theater is located on Morton College’s campus, auditions are open to the public, and all the actors in this production are professionals, explains Jedlicka’s Managing Director Melanie Lamoureux, a Hinsdale native who also is artistic director of Hinsdale’s BAMtheatre. Lamoureux talks about the show’s wild ride.

Tell me a little bit about ‘Das Barbecü.’ It’s a hilarious production. We have five actors and they play over 30 different characters, so they all have to run off stage and change costumes very quickly. It’s shocking, because it’s so fast. I spoke with the composer and the gentleman that commissioned it, and they were telling me about how they came up with this adaptation. They wanted it to be that if people loved the ‘Ring’ cycle, they would love this, but if they’ve never heard of it, they would still like it. This is the same story as the ‘Ring’ cycle.

This will be the regional premiere — what does that mean to you? We really like to take on regional premieres. It’s definitely an exciting project to work on material that hasn’t been tapped into too much. I know it was originally commissioned for Seattle, and it did have a little off-Broadway run in New York, but we’re the first people to do it in the Midwest.

What went into preparing for this production? One of the biggest challenges for us was the costumes. We have to costume five actors and fill 30 different characters. That was difficult. Also, the costumes have to be removed and put on so quickly, so that was hard, but the costume designer was awesome. Another difficult part was to take the story and comprehend it at first — it is complicated and intricate. The actors had to take some time to trace the storylines and follow their own personal journeys.

“Das Barbecü” stars Morgan Briggs (back row from left), Drew Longo and Dylan McGill, and Emily Goldberg (front row left) and Kristin Lutzeier. Submitted photos

What are you most looking forward to for opening night? It’s always fun just to witness the last week. It starts out with everyone totally stressed out, and then day-by-day, it’s just magical to watch how it comes together piece by piece. It’s also cool to see the difference in the actors’ performances, when there’s a crowd for the very first time. They come alive in a new way, and it’s very cool to watch that. — ALLISON HORNE

Focus turns to individual goals By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

With numbers down, the opportunity for Lemont to match its recent team success on the wrestling mats this winter is out of the question. But that doesn’t mean the Indians are approaching the final month of competition any differently. “The way I run the room and prepare the kids doesn’t change at all,” said Lemont coach John St. Clair. “We will push just as hard as last year. There is no let-up. Just because we are not having as much team success, we want them to get as much individual success as they can have.” After finishing third in Class 2A in 200910 and fourth the next year, Lemont had 10 state qualifiers last winter and seven state

place finishers, six of which were seniors. Hit hard by graduation, along with the early season injury bug, the Indians have been forced to forfeit three or four weights in every dual meet this time around. Three state qualifiers did return for the squad, but that number was cut down by one after sophomore Jimmy Brennan had season-ending shoulder surgery. Headlining the group is 182-pound senior

Chris Giatras, who is coming off an exceptional football season as the Indians’ top running back. Giatras is ranked No. 1 in his weight class in Class 2A by illinoismatmen. com and has just one loss on the season. “No doubt about it, Chris is a special kid,” said the coach. “Someone like him doesn’t come around too often. He has either been starting full time or part time since freshman year. He was a part of the team that took third place in state and he was a part of the team that was fourth in state. “He learned from the seniors last year how to be a leader and he has taken on that role. He is making sure kids are doing things the right way and leading by example. And he is kind of embarrassed just being a qualifier and a placer, he wants to be on top of the podium.” Senior Mike Devitt qualified for state

at 220 a year ago and is wrestling at that weight again. Fellow seniors Vince Lietza, Jason Walsh and Mike Frogner are also contributing for the Indians. “We’ve won a couple of duals and we’ve had decent showings at a couple of very good tournaments,” St. Clair said. “We are not going places and coming in last. The guys that we do have are working hard and competing which is nice. One thing I can say about this group is regardless of wins and losses, they practice as hard as any group I’ve had.” The next step for Lemont is the South Suburban Conference meet on Saturday. The Class 2A Tinley Park regional will follow on Saturday, Feb. 2. “The conference meet is a tune-up for the next week,” St. Clair said. “Come regional time, it’s win or go home.”

Indians ride win streak into Pack the Place night By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com

Rebounding nicely from a Jan. 4 loss to Richards, Lemont’s boys basketball team will take a four-game winning streak into Friday’s Pack the Place matchup with Bremen. “It’s our last Friday night home game so we hope to play well,” said Lemont coach Rick Runaas. “Bremen is kind of small and struggling a bit but they are well coached. They will be patient and they will challenge us.” The Indians’ latest win came on Tuesday when the squad defeated Providence 7057 behind 23 points and eight assists from Juozas Balciunas. “Juozas played really well,” the coach said. “Overall, we played well as a team controlling the tempo and playing together. But as the point guard, Juozas controlled everything. He got us into our offense when he needed to and he made shots when he needed to. He probably played his best game

On Jan. 17, Lemont beat Oak Forest 60-44 behind 21 points from Wisz and 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists from Einikis. PRUDENTIAL RUBLOFF PROPERTIES’ A DAY IN PARADISE’ EVENT RAISED $24,000 FOR THE SUNSHINE KIDS CHICAGO, IL - January 16, 2013 – Michael Pierson and Chris Eigel, principal partners of the prestigious Chicago real estate firm Prudential Rubloff Properties, are pleased to announce that the second annual A Day in Paradise’ Prudential Rubloff Cares Fundraiser to benefit the Sunshine Kids raised $24,000! The allday event was held on September 19th at the Marriott Oak Brook Hills Resort. Celebrity G.W. Bailey, Executive Director of The Sunshine Kids Foundation, was present to support Prudential Rubloff’s efforts. You may know Mr. Bailey as Louis Provenza from “The Closer” and “Major Crimes” as well as Captain Harris from the Police Academy movies. His moving words set the stage for the Sunshine Kids who were on hand to share their own stories about the organization and how much the involvement of companies like Prudential Rubloff means to them. Julie Morse, a Prudential Rubloff real estate broker and writer, spoke about her experience with her son’s childhood cancer. She authored a book, along with her son, about their personal experience. The book, “When Billy Went Bald”, has been critically acclaimed by Midwest Book Review as “an exceptional contribution to the field of children’s health and education”, filling a deep void on the bookshelf. Now a Moonbeam Children’s Book Award recipient, the book is available for purchase on Amazon.com, and is a great gift to consider for local hospitals, elementary schools and preschools. Every sale of the book benefits the Sunshine Kids Foundation. A Day in Paradise’ included a shotgun golf event, tennis, bingo, live and silent auctions, raffles and buffet dinner followed by dancing to “South of Disorder”, the popular Jimmy

Buffet cover band. The Sunshine Kids is a national non-profit organization dedicated to children undergoing cancer treatment. In 2011, the first year the event was held, Prudential Rubloff Properties donated over $20,000 to the Sunshine Kids in memory of Wendy Bergseth, former executive vice president and Lake Forest office Branch Manager. The funds will once again be donated in Ms. Bergseth’s name. “Our financial goal was very ambitious, but the event was a great success and we are thrilled to be able to make such a substantial impact on the lives of your cancer patients,” said Pierson, president and chairman. “Our co-chairs, Tina Porterfield and Laura Marquardt, of the Hinsdale office, planned an extraordinary event,” said Eigel, CEO. “Their commitment to this event and Prudential Rubloff Cares is impressive. They did an outstanding job and we thank them for their hard work.” Established in 1982, the Sunshine Kids organization is committed to providing positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. The Sunshine Kids provides a variety of programs and events, free of charge, for kids who are receiving cancer treatments in hospitals across North America.
