A Message From Ian Staniloff Executive Director As I write this article, I am still amazed that we are living through such historic and surreal times. It is June and although we are finally moving away from selfisolating after months of being homebodies during the pandemic, we continue to social distance in our everyday lives. The changes we have all had to make have been difficult and unique, and who would have ever thought staying home and chilling out was the optimal way for most of us to act. It was mid-March when the decision was made to close our building. Initially we were looking at one month as a guide point for determining the length of our closure, with the plan being to reassess every week. As of June 1, we finally welcomed back our administrative team on a limited time basis to

transition back and adjust to working in the office with appropriate distancing practices. Although the office and synagogue itself are closed to the public, our team members can be reached directly Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. During the long period of isolation, I took part in a ZOOM call with my wife’s family from points across the globe. At the time, our nephew and his wife joined us online from London, England where they had been in a quarantine situation for several months. They have two young children and were not able to go out except for isolated instances with each other. When it came to groceries, everything they brought in was ordered by telephone. It is only recently that my niece was able to even see her parents (one at a time) even with social distancing models in place as gatherings of more than two people were not allowed. My brother-in-law in Toronto and his wife hadn’t left their home for months. They had not been able to see their grandson even though they live in the same city, except via a ZOOM call. A nephew in Montreal was basically home bound as he graded University exams. Throughout all my conversations with family and friends these last few months, what strikes me is how fortunate we are to live in Winnipeg and Manitoba during these times. We experienced very few cases of Covid-19 and the self-isolating and social distancing seems to have worked to a great extent. Our provincial government has been slowly relaxing restrictions regarding interaction between people at events and locations. We have been able to shop at grocery stores and after some initial concerns about rationing certain items (Bathroom Tissue) we seem to be able to get everything we need to sustain ourselves. It appears as if we are slowly turning the tide, but must remain vigilant, careful, and cautious so as not to have a significant reoccurrence of this pandemic. Vaccines and cures will be provided in time but will the changes that have taken place be difficult to reverse.

The one thing we are all missing is the in-person social interaction with our friends and loved ones. The inability to embrace our family members and greet our friends with hugs and handshakes leaves us feeling somehow empty. It is not so much that we have not seen and talked to people as much as we haven’t embraced the people to whom we are closest. It may be many weeks, months or even years before we are able to return to greeting people in this manner, but will we choose to do so? I for one, look forward to the day when I can greet a congregant without worrying about social distancing, or whether hand sanitary stations are close by.

attendance or not. Our Rabbis will be providing a service that is meaningful and relevant in these unique times. We will be contacting each one of you to ensure you understand and are able to participate this year. We will be providing password access to our services to ensure the safety and security of our broadcast. We may be able to allow people to attend in person, subject to social distancing and mass gathering regulations at the time.

I want to be able to personally comfort our friends who have lost loved ones other than through a telephone call. I look forward to the time when I can congratulate a B’nai Mitzvot on their very special day along with their families and friends.

Our goal is to ensure that Shaarey Zedek remains the strong, vibrant synagogue that has engaged our congregants and community for over 130 years. It may look different in the short term, but in time we will look back on this as a time where we persevered and stayed the course. Based upon what we have experienced over the last few months, I am convinced that when we emerge from this pandemic, Shaarey Zedek will be as strong and cohesive as ever.

I also look forward to enjoying the High Holy Days with all our congregants and community, where I have an opportunity to greet most of you personally. But for now, with what we know today, the new reality is going to be much different than in the past.

Whatever the regulations are, we want you to be assured that “We Will be Conducting Meaningful Vibrant High Holy Day Services” this year!

Keep well!

A few weeks ago, we announced our plan for this year’s High Holy Day Services. With the uncertainties that we are facing, our plan is to live stream our services regardless of whether people are in

Facing an Empty Chapel

A Message From Rabbi Matthew Leibl Photo credit: Elaine Halpert

It’s been over two months since we closed our doors to the public and started streaming our services online. Sometimes I actually catch myself forgetting we used to do this in front of a live audience. The feedback to our online offerings has been overwhelmingly positive. We’re lucky we had the cameras in place and have been tinkering with a live stream for the last couple of years. When the pandemic hit we were able to pivot without really skipping a beat. We just turned our operation into an HD television broadcast. But have we done too well? The other day I got an email from a friend who wondered if we’ve made watching services from

home too comfortable. Too easy. “Will there be some people,” he asked, “Who get used to this new format and prefer to watch it even after a resumption of regular services?” He made some interesting points. No traffic. No worries about what to wear or the weather. An opportunity to stay anonymous. “Why go?” he asked. I wonder if he’s right. I worry. When this is all over, even when folks can come back to shul without any fear of getting sick, will some people choose convenience over congregation? The online services have felt like a flashback to my days as a radio host on TSN 1290. The audience can see us, but we can’t see them. It’s weird. Because synagogue never used to be like that. One of the reasons I retired from the radio was because I couldn’t see anyone’s face. It started to wear on me. Radio is supposed to be this super intimate form of media, where people invite you into their most personal spaces (like the bedroom, the shower, or the car) and yet, when you can’t see each other, there’s a huge disconnect. I never knew how my jokes landed. I could never tell if people were engaged or bored or distracted. I prefer the live audience. I preferred Shabbat morning at Shaarey Zedek. Being able to see the looks on people’s faces. Being able to get immediate feedback from the crowd. The radio felt like a one-way street, but synagogue was always a two-way connection. For me, that always felt more real. That always felt more intimate. At the very end of the Torah it says God spoke to Moses paneem el paneem – “face to face” – unlike anyone else before or since. But it’s just an expression. A metaphor. We can’t take it literally. Earlier in the Torah God clearly says anyone who sees God’s face (whatever that means) will die. But the Torah still uses paneem el paneem for Moses because even the ancient Israelites knew when it comes to human relationships, the

ultimate closeness, the ultimate intimacy, is face to face. Think about the way we use face as a verb. Face the facts. Face the music. Face reality. When it’s crunch time, there’s no hiding behind a screen. When it counts, it’s time to show your face. I’ve always felt synagogue was a place for intimate connections. People connect with God, people connect with the rabbis and prayer leaders, and people connect with each other. They become part of a community, part of something bigger than themselves. I’ve said it before in these pages: there’s an energy in our services that comes from the people in the pews. It comes from face to face. Don’t get me wrong. If it’s online or nothing, I’ll take online every time and twice on Saturday. And we’ll always offer the broadcast for people who are out of town or stuck at home. But when the synagogue reopens, I just hope the people come back. It’s all starting to get a little too familiar for me. A little too radio. I miss the faces. There’s just no substitute for paneem el paneem.

Weight Loss

A Message From Rabbi Aníbal Mass It was interesting to receive so many comments about my recent weight loss. It was interesting that most of the time the comments were accompanied by some kind of observation like “why did you lose the weight? You looked good before”. That kept me thinking that most people, I guess, will embark on an exercise program and on a diet to “look good”. I believe this shouldn't be the primary motivation to make such changes in our lifestyles. Exercising and diet should never be about how we look but about how we feel.

In my case, I was tired of being tired and feeling a constant fogginess. I have a 6 years old child, a demanding job and a wife who also has a demanding job. I needed the extra energy to be better....better engaged, a better father, a better partner, and yes, a better Rabbi. Then I thought, how many other things we do or do not do in life in order to look better instead of feel better? The difference between the two attitudes is extremely important. One is focused on cosmetic appearances, the other is focused on improving ourselves to better serve our divine purposes. It’s easy to confuse the two and to think that the cosmetic goal is an objective on its own. By doing that, we neglect the vision, the work and the energy needed on deeper and more important objectives. Recently we celebrated Shavuot, the festival of the revelation for the Torah, we learn that sometimes to achieve our goals we must endure discomfort for a season. There is a beautiful Midrash in the Mechilta stating the circumstances of the accepting the Torah:

God revealed Himself to the children of the wicked Esau and asked them, “Will you accept the Torah?” They asked, “What does it say?” He replied, “It says: You shall not murder.” They said to Him, “Murder is the legacy we received from our forefather Esau, as the verse states, ‘You shall live by your sword.’” He appeared to the children of Ammon and Moav (the descendants of Lot) and said to them, “Will you accept the Torah?” They asked, “What does it say?” He said, “You shall not commit adultery.” They said to Him, “We are all the products of an adulterous relationship, as the verse states, ‘The two daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father.’ How can we accept it?”

He appeared to the children of Ishmael and said to them, “Will you accept the Torah?” They said to Him, “What does it say?” He said, “You shall not steal.” They said to Him, “That was the blessing with which our forefather was blessed, as it says, ‘He will be a wild man,’ and it says, ‘For I have stolen.’” When he came to the Jewish people: “From His right hand He presented the fiery Torah to them.” They all opened their mouths and said, “Everything that God has said we will do, and we will hear.” The Midrash portraits the nations of the world refusing to accept the Torah, justifying their refusal by claiming that the Torah’s demands ran counter to their lifestyle. In other words, they liked the way their lives looked like and refused to make the adjustments to have better lives, to feel better in the long run. Instead they insisted on maintaining their routines which normalized bad behavior. The Jewish people in this Misdrash had no such hesitation. They embraced God’s Torah, giving themselves the opportunity to be better people and have better lives. Thank you so much if you think that I look better but the most important thing is I feel better and have more energy to serve God, my family, and my congregation. Ashira, Ronen and I wish you all a happy summer!

The Best Laid Plans

A Message From Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze, Engagement and Education Director In a recent Uplift! video I spoke about the importance of making plans. Even in difficult times, where the context is constantly evolving, making plans is symbolic of hope. The unsettled times provoked by the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the restrictions on social gatherings has come at a time in the Jewish calendar when the concepts of planning and hope are intertwined with the historical events of our collective past. Passover and the Exodus from Egypt represent our freedom as a people and our right to exercise free-will over our own destiny. An enslaved people cannot make plans, but is rather, subjected to the whims and wills of its captors. In our more recent history as a nation, we were given the opportunity to take control of our own destiny with the establishment of the modern state of Israel which we celebrated at Yom Ha'atzmaut. This relatively recent event enabled us as a people to take control of the reins of history to realize our potential. We crowned this new status by naming the Israeli National Anthem, Ha Tikvah, The Hope. As slaves in Egypt and throughout our time in the diaspora following the destruction of the Second Temple, we never lost hope that we would one day be free. A free people is a people that can choose it’s path and take responsibility for its actions. As individuals, we must exercise our own freedom by making plans with enough flexibility to stay the course through turbulent waters, and as we have always done, never lose sight of that hope that keeps us optimistic that things will indeed get better. Making plans, staying positive and hoping for brighter days is what has kept us going at Congregation Shaarey Zedek since we closed our doors to the public a few short months ago. Our doors may have closed but our hearts are open, and we continue to welcome you through virtual channels, daily. In May we gathered virtually for the shul's Yom Yerushalayim Family Kabbalat Shabbat Dinner and also a Community-Wide Tikun Leil Shavuot. We may not be gathering in person this year but

14

our four synagogues along with Jewish Federation presented an inspiring panel of our rabbis. Rabbi Yosef Benarroch from Adas Yeshurun Herzlia, Allan Finkel from Temple Shalom, Rabbi Matthew Leibl from Congregation Shaarey Zedek and Rabbi Kliel Rose from Congregation Etz Chayim all shared insights on Jewish wisdom for coping with adversity. The presentation was followed by an online Chat Q and A with Rabbi Aníbal Mass. For both of these events our fabulous Catering Department had provided take out options so we could all eat at the same time, together in spirit if not in body. For the Kabbalat Shabbat, ready-to-bake pizzas and decorate-your-own cupcake kits were available for order. For Shavuot, traditional dairy meals including Lokshun Kugel and Cheesecake were on the menu for order. The Catering Department has just launched an extensive catering menu for take out throughout the summer -- see page 4 for details. At times like these, the saying of “going from strength to strength” hits a cord. We can and we will only be stronger and closer as a community. Wishing you and your families a Happy Summer.

Sisterhood

Louise Raber, Sisterhood, Co-President Covid-19 — do I wear a mask? Do I wear gloves? What is your definition of social isolation? And when do we get to go back to life as we once knew it or will we go back to life as we once knew it? The answers are all very vague, and very much a concern to us all. Sandy Polanski planned our Tealess Tea for Torah Fund in March. We assembled the cards in the envelopes and delivered them to the synagogue to be mailed. But, before they were we were advised we could not come into the synagogue and stamp and process the cards and there was no one to do it! A new wrinkle in how we have always done this event. So, after waiting a month, we decided we’d send out an electronic invitation hoping that people would understand and send their Torah Fund donation. In May we also celebrated Mother's Day. In year's past I commemorated the day as a daughter with my beloved Mother Marian Zelickson z”l and then with my own daughter Lindsay; never have I celebrated as I did this year. There was no BBQ, no brunch, nor a dinner a week early in San Francisco. This year we went for an old fashioned car ride. Yearly Sisterhood sponsors a Mother’s Day Tea. The Mitzvah Group started many years ago by Eleanor Burke and now chaired by Rochelle Pincovich always goes to The Simkin Centre. We bring dainties and

sponsor the entertainment for our most valued senior citizens. But this year we can’t even enter the building. I sent Laurie Cerqueti, Allana Kull and Cindy Greenlay an “IOU”. We will have our Mother’s Day Tea, hopefully before we have our Chanukah Party! In May, Marisa Hochman and I were to chair the 58th Annual Interfaith Luncheon. Our special guest Dr. Sandra (Sandi) Kirby is a dynamic speaker and intriguing individual, and our fireside chat with Sandi and Rabbi Matthew was shaping into one of our best luncheons yet. We’ve connected with the Synagogue, and if we are able to have a gathering of over 10 people, not social distance 6 feet and of course the doors of Shaarey Zedek are open to the public, we will plan a date after the High Holy Days. So all I can say now is “stay tuned to a date, and time that we are unsure of “it’s at the Shaarey Zedek and it’s a great program with party sandwiches for lunch. Sandi’s topic is “Trans Athletes’ Right to Compete: Exploring Sex, Gender and Sexuality in the World of Women’s Sport”. The Judaica Shop is closed as the synagogue is closed. Carole Jeffries is in touch with Shaarey Zedek and as soon as she is allowed in, she will either open the shop for business or see how she can connect with you, her valuable customers. Harriet Lyons and Carol Levi had to cancel their Spring Weaving class. As of now, they have no idea when it might take place nor when the Fall Class, which is full will start.
