THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD MESSAGE FROM

LORNE WEISS, PRESIDENT

As I write my last piece for the Shofar as President, and I reflect on my time at Shaarey Zedek, I am reminded of this title to the famous Beatles song. Paulette and I joined the Shaarey Zedek some 35 years ago. We joined because, like many of our contemporaries, our children were in the Jewish school system and we knew b’nai mitzvah were down the road. Like our contemporaries, our children had their bar and bat mitzvah at the Shaarey Zedek and, other than the life cycle events of friends and family, we attended shul “religiously” .... 3 days a year! (Our journey begins.) At age 50 my life changed; my father died. My good friend, Sam Guralnick, helped us through the shiva, being there every night to lead the prayers and accompanying me to morning minyan at the Shaarey Zedek. I found the minyan to be a place of comfort, warmth, support and prayer that I had not experienced up to that point in my life. (The next turn in the winding road.) A week became a month; a month became a year, and a year stretched into several. Around that time, I was asked to join the Ritual Committee, and a few years later became the chair of this amazing group of individuals who had a wealth of knowledge and passion for the synagogue. This group, along with Rabbi Green, then Cantor Aníbal Mass and Chazzan Sheni Matthew Leibl began a series of changes to our services that re-invigorated our shul and took us further along the path of becoming a relevant and engaging community institution. (A sharp turn in the winding road.) About 10 years ago, I was asked to join the Board of Directors. I stayed for a few years and then left to focus my shul efforts as chair of the Ritual Committee. (A curve in the road.) Four years ago, I was asked to return to the Board as an Officer. It was with a certain amount of hesitation that I accepted the honour. It was, to me, a huge responsibility to take on the leadership role of a congregation such as ours with such a large and diverse membership and an important historical role in the community. But, with the support of my wife and the encouragement of my rabbi and good friend, Alan Green, I accepted the opportunity. (The next turn in the winding road.) Over the past four years, together with the support of a skilled and committed Board of Directors, we made

some difficult decisions on issues such as amalgamation, clergy recruitment, a new model for a rabbinic team and a complete review of our Shabbat and High Holy Day services. All of us, Clergy, Staff, and Volunteers embraced the concepts of Relevance, Engagement and Flexibility and you, our congregants, responded! Along with this success came a true realization that we cannot effectively meet the needs of our membership and the community at large in the years to come in a building that was designed to meet the needs of seventy years ago. We haven't done a major renovation or had a capital campaign in almost 50 years. We are the fortunate owners of an iconic building in an outstanding location. A building, however, that doesn’t meet current needs and will not meet the needs of the generations that will follow. If you have been at the synagogue since September at a service or during High Holy Days, you saw the presentation concept drawings of what a revitalized Shaarey Zedek building can be. Currently, our architects are working diligently to provide accurate cost estimates for this exciting project. We hope to have this in place in the next few months and begin the planning for a capital campaign that will allow Shaarey Zedek to be central to the religious and cultural needs of our community for generations to come. I encourage you to review the concept drawings on the next few pages and lend your support as we move forward into the next 50 years. The renderings are also available online at www.szwinnipeg.ca and on our Facebook Page "Congregation Shaarey Zedek". I would like to thank all of you for your encouragement and support as we met the challenges of the past and invite you to join us in our journey as we plan for the future. The road ahead is now onward and upward! Chag Sameach Chanukah

VISITING MESSAGE GERMANY FROM RABBI MATTHEW LEIBL

He’s not saying much, but I can tell by the look in his eyes how he’s feeling. Surprised. Confused. Disappointed. Even a little angry. When I hear old ladies speaking German on the subway, I hear my Baba dropping Yiddish phrases in conversation at Shabbat dinner. When my friend’s mom serves up a potato dumpling with dinner and tells me it’s a German treat called “knedle”, I see my Baba passing out “kneidlach” – matzah balls – on Pesach. When I realize everyone in Germany says my last name properly (in Canada I get “Lee-bull” a lot), I realize even my own name is German! I wonder if the immediate negative reaction so many people have to Germany blocks us from exploring an important part of our past? The singer-songwriter Dan Bern has a line about growing up in America with his immigrant parents: “They spoke German, hated Germans, confusing times.” For everything that happened, as unthinkable and horrifying as it is, so much of who we are as a people traces back to Germany. And I feel that when I’m there. I really do. Sure, I still have moments. At the wedding party, when talking to my buddy’s German friends, I find myself wondering: What were your grandparents, and greatgrandparents, doing during the war? Where were they? I don’t ask them out loud, but I wonder it. But then I see the way they react to me, especially when they find out what I do. One friend told me about a memorial project called the “Stolperstein” – the stumbling blocks – across Europe. I’d never heard of it. You should look it up. The museums, the memorials – they exist. There’s no denying what happened. My sense is, Germans are trying to distance themselves from the ugliness of their past and get better. We wouldn't want people to hold against us the sins of our grandparents, would we? I would never say forget. Never. I'm not even sure we have to forgive. It's not for me to tell you what to do. But I do know that what's worked for me, what's helped me remember and never forget, is to go and see for myself. To face my fears of the Germany I don't know and experience Germany as it is. The old gentleman isn't satisfied with our talk on Germany. He scoffs and walks away. But I hear him say to another fellow nearby: "Germany. Ugh." Then he pauses, and in a hushed voice says: "It actually is a beautiful place."

He’s an older gentleman, originally from Israel, though he’s lived in Winnipeg for decades. And I’ve just told him I’m going to Germany on my vacation. “Germany?” “Yes, Germany. Hamburg.” “Why?” The answer is, for a wedding. The Rebbetzin – Heather – and I have a dear friend who moved to Hamburg six years ago for a girl. This trip was to attend their wedding. But this gentleman doesn’t care about that. The look he’s giving me is one I’ve seen before. Many times. Usually from older folks in the congregation. Even from people in my own family. They just don’t understand why I would ever go to Germany by choice. They’re even more surprised when I tell them I’ve been to Germany a few times, traveled all over, and that it’s – without question – my favourite country in Europe. But I know where they’re coming from. We can all appreciate their reaction, can’t we? “Germany? But that’s where…not that long ago…the Jews…” Yes. I know. And that’s exactly how I felt the first time Heather and I traveled there together. I still remember getting off the plane, seeing signs in German, hearing people speaking German, and immediately feeling nervous and anxious. My stomach was unsettled. My heart was racing. I felt like someone was going to tap me on the shoulder and take me away. It was total, absolute fear. Something I’ve learned: it’s very dangerous to let fear dictate what we do. Or don’t do. Particularly when it’s fear of the unknown. I had built up in my mind that Germany was a horrible place because of terrible things that several decades ago. But it’s not like that anymore. I’ve been to France and Spain and Italy and Greece. They’re all beautiful and I loved my time in each place. But, as a Westerner, it’s so much more comfortable to travel through Germany than any of these other places. It’s cleaner. The people are friendlier. Their English is better. The trains actually run on time. Everything is just so efficient. Traveling through Germany really is a pleasure. Our last trip was no exception. In fact, I find the more time I spend in Germany, the more familiar it feels to me. As a Jew.

SHAAREY ZEDEK 365 MESSAGE FROM Photo credit: Elaine Halpert

RABBI ANÍBAL MASS

I had a vocal coach that once asked me to complete the following statement: “Practice makes…”. Of course, I immediately and confidently said: “Perfect”. He smiled and replied: “Permanent. Practice makes permanent, not perfect”. He added: “If you play a sport, you know that if you practice everyday the wrong way, then it will become very difficult to correct bad techniques and bad habits because muscles have memory. The more we do something, the more that something becomes one with us.” He finally suggested that constant practice using the right technique is the only way to become better at something. You can’t just know the right technique but not practice it, and you can’t just practice the wrong way. I really like that analogy because it reminds me of the way we practice our Judaism. Unfortunately, some people have been experiencing Judaism the wrong way for so many years that now it is very difficult to realize that there is another way. Synagogues used to be places where people would encounter rebuke, blame and judgement. This approach was applied for so long that for many, it equals Judaism. You don’t have to be an expert to realize that this method is not the most effective way to generate change or to create happy, fulfilled, content and functional Jews. Rabbi Akiva (a scholar of the latter part of the first century and the beginning of the second century) proclaimed “I swear by the Temple service, I doubt if there is anyone in this generation who knows how to rebuke.” This means we have known for centuries that a different system was required to generate change and bring about transformation. So, what is the best way to generate change, to help people improve, to unlock the potential they already have, and to guide them onto the path they need to become all they can be? I believe the answer is contained in the word “Chanukah”. What does Chanukah represent?

12

Etymologically Speaking, Chanukah and chinuch (education) share a common shoresh (root): chet, nun, chaf. Even though Chanukah is usually translated as “dedication” because of the re-dedication of the Temple after the Jews defeated the Greeks, the most important battle was for the preservation of Jewish Identity. Those were times of rapid change and confusion as a result of the interaction with Greek culture all around. Again we can see that rebuking wouldn’t help, but rather, placing an emphasis on Jewish education in order to generate change from the inside out was the right approach. Chanukah is a reminder of the richness of our culture, our traditions and our Torah. This is something that can’t be forced from a pulpit. Instead, it is something that has to be experienced. For this reason, at the end of Yom Kippur, together with my colleague Rabbi Matthew Leibl, I introduced a challenge we call “Shaarey Zedek 365”. From our side, we promote a different approach to the services and sermons that many have experienced in the past: one that limits rebukes, judgment and blame. All we ask of you is to give us a year of your life to experience Shaarey Zedek as often as possible so that you may have the opportunity to transform your lives from the inside out. Come to our services, to our classes and to our programs. Volunteer with us and celebrate the Jewish festivals with us. If you do this for a year, we believe you will experience Judaism in a way you never have before. Are you ready to take the challenge?

SISTERHOOD SHABBAT: GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN MESSAGE FROM

SISTERHOOD SHABBAT CO-CHAIRS SANDY POLANSKI AND ALICE WEISSMANN We’re very excited to announce that our annual Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood Shabbat Service is happening on February 16 at 10:00 am. For the third year in a row, we will follow the interactive format of our Shabbat services and look forward to a lot of participation from our Sisterhood members. Over the years, we’ve recruited some remarkable women to lead prayers, chant Torah and Haftarah, deliver the D’var Torah, and simply contribute their unique talents. Sisterhood Shabbat offers an opportunity to be part of a spiritually inspiring service that educates and uplifts—thanks to the enlightening commentaries of Rabbis Aníbal Mass and Matthew Leibl. They have managed to go above and beyond and have made services—dare we say it—fun! And, after all, girls just wanna have fun. If you’re interested in doing something fun, please call the office at 204-452-3711 and leave a message for Sandy or Alice, or email alice@szwinnipeg.ca. We’ll send you in the right direction if you need some pointers.

After the service, everyone is welcome to enjoy the lovely kiddush organized by Sandy and prepared by Chef Joel Lafond and his Catering Team. It’s not too late to become a Sisterhood member, a significant benefit of which is being able to participate in the Shabbat Service. Membership also offers great opportunities to plan, implement and take part in the Interfaith Luncheon, educational and volunteer programs, Purim and Chanukah events, and—of course—the Sisterhood Shabbat. So, please join us on Saturday, February 16 at 10:00 am for this dynamic and inspiring service. Girls just wanna have fun. Don’t you?

Year round, the Gift Shop is always there to provide your needs. We try to cover all necessities, but if you have any ideas or requests please let us know. Also, we are always looking for new volunteers and would love to have you join us. It doesn’t have to be on a regular schedule, a few hours every so often would be greatly appreciated.

AN “I-LOOMINATING” PROGRAM MESSAGE FROM

SISTERHOOD WEAVING HARRIET LYONS & CAROL LEVI

Did you know that the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood has its own tallis weaving program?

We offer two sessions a year – in the spring and the fall – and they run for eight weeks. There are six weavers per class. We use rigid heddle table looms that are over 33 years old (anyone interested in donating a loom?). Let’s go back 34 years to 1984 when Rhoda Keynes was at a Women’s League Conference in Minneapolis and saw the tallaism woven by members of their Sisterhood. She was so impressed that she brought the idea back to our Sisterhood, and that’s when it all began. Our weavers have been both men and women from Shaarey Zedek and other congregations in Winnipeg who have ranged in age from 12 years old to 87 years young. All have completed colourful tallaism which will be treasured for years. This Sisterhood program brings our weavers together in an atmosphere of learning and camaraderie. Many newfound friendships have been formed through our classes. This project has gained recognition and brought acclaim to the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and Synagogue alike. In 1999 the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism of North America presented us with the Solomon Schechter Award – a Gold Medal in recognition of excellence in synagogue programming. How about that!!! How proud are we? In our classes we stress the importance of family involvement. We want the weavers to include family members in the weaving process of the tallis – the recipient, the bar or bat mitzvah, their siblings, parents and grandparents all take on a part in this project – be it in choosing the colours to weaving in rows of yarn – this project is interwoven with love of family. For the bar and bat mitzvah, the tallis presentation on the bimah not only has special significance for the day but will be cherished for years to come. This has been such a meaningful program not only for us but for the over 400 weavers who have woven over 600 tallaism since this project took flight. If you do the math, you can see that many weavers returned two, three and many more times to weave yet another treasure for another loved one. We smile when we see the many recipients in the sanctuary wearing the tallaism so lovingly woven for them.

LATKES, GASTRONOMIC JUDAISM AND WOMEN’S TRADITIONS LESLIE EMERY, LAY CLERGY &

PLAYGROUP TEACHER

A few years ago, I was invited to speak to the members of Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood on Women’s Traditions. As I prepared my talk I quickly realized that the Jewish traditions observed by the women in my family revolved heavily around food. As we all discussed and compared family chicken soup recipes and holiday preparations, I learned that I was not the only one. Traditionally, women prepared and cooked the food for all the holiday meals. Today, men join in the cooking, so we all enjoy the fruits of our labours and bond together over a scrumptious meal. One of my favorite family traditions is our annual latke day. For as long as I can remember, family members and close friends gather at my parents’ house to transform 20 lbs. of potatoes into delicious latkes. It’s one of my favorite days of the entire year. One might find this surprising considering the heavy smell of oil produced by frying an epic number of latkes and the mass amount of work involved. Nonetheless, every year I am energized

by the experience. It seems we’ve forgotten the power of sharing a task and working together towards a common goal. The laughter and conversation of people who’ve come together to cook should be embraced and enjoyed. My young daughter joined us this year, though we had to keep her out of the kitchen for safety reasons. As we all took turns peeling potatoes and frying latkes I began to wonder if this is what it was like throughout the ages. Groups of people gathering, cooking and caring for children together to prepare a festive meal. There’s something beautiful about the continuity, sharing these moments and making memories for a lifetime. As I snacked on a delicious latke with my daughter, I looked forward to the years to come when we can continue sharing this annual ritual. I hope this Chanukah you enjoy many moments together with those you love, have many hands to lighten the work and make memories to cherish as the years go by. When your family enjoyed the holiday meal, may joy and laughter be present at your table. Always. Chag Chanukah Sameach! Wishing you and yours a Happy Chanukah!

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! COME GET EMPOWERED BY DYNAMIC JEWISH LEARNING!

DR RENA SECTER ELBAZE ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION DIRECTOR

An example of this ongoing positive energy was the Dinner in the Sukkah, which we hosted on September 27th in conjunction with NJOP (The National Jewish Outreach Project). Sixty-Five people of all ages came together to enjoy the beautifully decorated Sukkah. Despite the cold, we gathered to make the traditional blessings, partake in kiddush, motzi and shake the Arba Minim (4 species). Participants enjoyed a festive meal including singing, interactive games to learn about Sukkot and a presentation by Rabbi Leibl. Later, participants learnt about the concept of Ushpizim, the honored guests that are traditionally welcomed into the Sukkah, as we viewed the feature film on the topic. More learning was offered on Sunday, September 30th when Rabbi Mass opened up the Choosing Judaism class to the entire community. Another offshoot of the Sukkot Dinner was the Hebrew Reading Course, also offered in partnership with NJOP. Eight students have been studying Hebrew every Monday in this special crash course that will run for five consecutive weeks. Speaking of Education…. On October 11th, young adults gathered as a part of the monthly Chamishi Shaarey Zedek group. The season kick off began with the theme: It Is Just a Matter of Time! Students discussed how to navigate a system where time is money and a precious commodity that cannot be recovered once it is spent. They explored the sound advice found in Jewish teachings on how to become the master over one’s time. The group meets on a monthly basis and will gather again on December 6th to celebrate Chanukah and learn about the topic of Self-Confidence inspired by Social Sciences and Jewish Wisdom. The Real Women of Jewish Winnipeg also gathered for the first session of the season on October 18th to discuss the topic: Who will be for Me? Defining Your Personal Brand. The key message of this first session came from an important quote from Shapira: “A man’s first knowledge should be to know himself.” Participants were inspired by the teachings of Israel ben Eliezer (born circa 1700) known as the Baal Shem

Tov “Master of a Good Name” who was a Jewish mystical rabbi considered the founder of Hasidic Judaism. Much discussion followed the presentation about the importance of behaviour and consistency in developing one’s own “good name” or “personal brand”. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our sponsor Kimi Nozick for the beautiful gifts that made all of the participants feel special. If you have not yet signed up for this dynamic women’s group, register for our January 24th session on the topic of … Manipulation! Not the dirty word you thought it was For those of you, who like to cook, consider signing up for Shabbat: A Taste of the World to Come. Past classes have explored Challah baking and Moroccan Chluent called Dafina, and include learning about how to savour the gift of a day of rest. Other educational offerings by our Rabbis include the Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) class with Rabbi Mass every second Wednesday and our four part series, Hear O Israel: Jewish Themes in Popular Music with Rabbi Leibl. This was just a little taste of the “Food For Thought” that our Adult Ed program has to offer. And… speaking of food! Coming on December 2nd, 2018 is the first annual Shaarey Zedek Top Chef Chanukah Latke Challenge. This new event will feature celebrity chefs from around the city and mouth watering, foodie activities for the whole family. More information will be available for registration and participation in the coming weeks. Later in January, join us to celebrate the Jewish New Year for trees with a Tu Bishvat Family Shabbat Dinner on January 18th, 2019 and on that same weekend, Sunday evening, January 20th, Adults will enjoy a special a nature themed, multi-artist Art @ the Zedek and Tu Bishvat Seder including wine and exotic fruit pairing. So much to remember right! That is a good thing, but if you would like to know more, or would like to get involved, please feel free to call me at 204-975-3489 or send me an email. Warm Regards!

The experience of the High Holidays this year, gave me a wonderful feeling of community and ingathering as I witnessed the synagogue overflowing with people. It was especially uplifting because of the positive feedback I received that continued right through Sukkot until the end of Simchat Torah.
