BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION MESSAGE FROM

FRANK HECHTER, PRESIDENT

As a board and with your support, we embark on our continuing journey to enhance the religious, social, programming and life cycle events and experiences of members of our congregation, the Jewish community and the broader Winnipeg community. Our congregation is blessed with exceptional clergy, creative and relevant programming as well as a skilled and dedicated administration. The physical plant of our synagogue has not been updated and revitalized since the early 1970s and much has changed since that time! The existing physical plant desperately requires technological upgrades in heating, ventilation and electrical service. Moreover, in-depth analysis of the building has confirmed the foundation is sound and the iconic appearance of our synagogue will not be altered. That said, additional natural light, the exposure of windows until now hidden will contribute to the warmth and inviting nature of our sanctuary and auditorium.

A major objective of the renewal of the physical plant is to better accommodate the services and programs offered to our members. Working drawings and costs are being generated in the next three months and members of our congregation will be invited to attend open house meetings to reflect on the proposed recommendations. The meantime or anytime you wish to discuss issues related to our synagogue, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. I may be reached at president@szwinnipeg.ca. Wishing you and yours health, happiness, peace and laughter.

At the January Board of Directors meeting of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, we welcomed a presentation by Dr. Raymond Currie and Ingrid Dowan of Circles For Reconciliation. The organization they represent aims to “… establish trusting, meaningful relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples as part of the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.” More information: www.circlesforreconciliation.ca Photo: (L) Dr. Raymond Currie, Co-Founder of Circles For Reconciliation (R) Dr. Frank Hechter, President of Congregation Shaarey Zedek

WHAT’S INMESSAGE A NAME? FROM RABBI MATTHEW LEIBL

When Heather and I kept telling people we weren’t telling anyone our son’s name – not even our parents – until his bris, some folks thought we were stalling. That we couldn’t make up our minds.

8

Quite often there’s symmetry between a person’s Hebrew and English names. Like a first letter in common or a first sound. Tzvi, which means “deer”, is also Hersh in Yiddish. So a lot of Jewish dudes with H names in English are Hersh in Yiddish or Tzvi in Hebrew. True story.) Like I said, we had this conversation long before we knew we were having a kid. We tossed out one H name after another. None of them seemed to fit. Not even Honus. One day I remember coming home and telling Heather, “I’ve got it.” A street I drive on almost every single day on my way to shul, just off Corydon, is Hugo Street. Hugo. That was it. But it was a little out there. Would she like it? I smiled. Heather smiled. “It’s perfect,” she said. Easy to spell. A name that’s been around forever, but isn’t particularly common. Old-fashioned and unique. Retro and modern. All at the same time. We had it. Hugo. It nearly killed us to keep the name a secret for a whole week from the people we loved. But it was worth it, when we told this story the morning of the bris, to see everyone’s reaction. But here’s the best part. The night before the bris, just hours before the big reveal, Heather asked me if I knew what the name meant. If I knew where it came from. I blushed – I had no idea. We’d never looked it up! Turns out, Hugo has been around since the Middle Ages. The Latin form of the name Hugh, whose origins are French. It means one who is bright in mind, heart, and spirit. How about that. I mean, really – what more could anyone wish for their kid? Our beloved Hugo David Leibl.

Actually, it was quite the opposite. We had his name picked out even before we found out Heather was pregnant. And, just as we embraced tradition in keeping the name a secret for the first week, we relied heavily on tradition when it came to picking his name. In Jewish tradition, names matter. Think back to the Bible. Every character’s name has significance. Avraham is the father of many. Yisrael wrestles with G-d. Moses names his sons Gershom – “a stranger there” – and Eliezer – “G-d saved me” – to reflect his personal journey. There’s meaning behind every name. Our people have also inherited a beautiful tradition of honouring loved ones through the names we pick. Names transcend generations, creating links between the past and the future. Keeping family histories alive. Heather and I knew we wanted our son’s name to reflect both of our families. Hers and mine. We wanted to recognize men, from each side, for whom our son would be proud to be named. Heroes in our lives, whose attributes and the way they lived their lives, could serve as inspirations for the fulfillment of the hope he grow up to live a life of ma’asim tovim – good deeds. For the middle name we went with Heather’s family. When Heather converted, Rabbi Mass said she could choose to adopt either Ashkenazic or Sephardic heritage. She chose Sephardic. (I, of course, encouraged this decision so we’d have rice and peanut butter in the house on Pesach.) Sephardim have the tradition of naming children after living relatives. So it was an easy decision for us to choose Heather’s dad’s name – David – for our son’s middle name. The renaissance man who never ceases to amaze me with the skills he possesses (who built our Sukkah from scratch!), our son would be lucky to inherit half of what Dave can do. And how fitting the origin of David is Hebrew. Daveed. The humble shepherd. The giant slayer. The Psalmist. The King. Whose name means “beloved.” My family is Ashkenazic and our tradition is to name for a relative who has passed away. I really wanted to honour my late Zaida – Harold Pollock. Growing up, he was my hero. A man I looked up to with all my being. So we gave our little guy my Zaida’s Hebrew name – Tzvi – and knew we wanted an “H” name in English to go with it. (How do you get an H name, like Harold, from Tzvi?

IS IT A FARCE? MESSAGE FROM Photo credit: Elaine Halpert

RABBI ANÍBAL MASS

With Rabbi Green’s retirement and departure from the city last year, the honour fell upon me for the first time to oversee the selling of chametz (leavened or food mixed with leavening agents). I put forth a lot of effort to encourage our congregants to sell me their chametz before Pesach began. Some of the most common questions I’m asked regarding Mechirat Chametz, the selling of chametz, are “Is it real?”, “Do we really sell the chametz to a non-Jew?”, “If we already know we are going to get back the Chametz after Pesach, what kind of loophole is this?”, and finally, “Is this a farce?”. The answer is, “No”. This is not a farce. The Rabbis understood the financial burden that comes with the obligation to remove all chametz by determining that it is permissible to sell it. This includes the chametz that we don’t want to eat, donate, throw out or burn, (i.e., liquor or other alcoholic beverages, dishes, pots and pans, etc.). These items can be sold to a non-Jew with the option to buy it back after the festival. The transaction is conducted by a rabbi, while each congregant signs a Power of Attorney that allows the rabbi to sell the chametz on his or her behalf.

After selling the chametz to a non-Jew, it no longer belongs to the congregant and therefore is not affected by the prohibition to enjoy it or consume it after Pesach. Immediately after Pesach, the rabbi buys back the chametz on behalf of the congregation as stipulated in the Sh’tar Mechirat Chametz (Document of Sale of Chametz). The Document of Sale of Chametz is a four-page legal document that contains the terms and conditions of the sale. It is explained in its entirety to the purchaser and is signed by the rabbi and the non-Jew in front of a Beit Din. In our case, it is also sealed by a Public Notary. The practices of signing the Sh’tar Mechirat, receiving the down payment, the exchange of an object (in our case a handkerchief) and a handshake are known as Kinyan Chalifin, all of which formalizes the sale. Now, the non-Jew owns the chametz and also leases the rooms where the chametz is stored. He agrees to meet again after the festival to finalize the transaction. After Pesach, the non-Jew must decide if he wishes to pay full price for the chametz and the leased rooms. Since this amount is significant, the non-Jew has the option to return the chametz to the rabbi. The rabbi then waives any money owed for the leasing of the rooms, accepts the returned chametz, retrieves the signed document and all the signed Powers of Attorney, and returns to the non-Jew his down payment plus a bonus. They then shake hands and another handkerchief is exchanged. At that moment the chametz again belongs to its previous owners who can now eat it. Please join me at the Shaarey Zedek on Friday, April 19th at 9:00 AM to witness the selling of the chametz, and on Saturday, April 27th at 9:45 PM to witness the re-purchase of the chametz. The ceremony will also be live streamed at www.szwinnipeg.ca From my family to yours, Chag Kasher v’Sameach!

Ensuring Fairness in Access to the ‘New Genetics’ Dr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg

Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 12:00 PM We are in an era where genetic testing of a patient is routinely done and can help prevent or diagnose disease and select appropriate treatment. This is known as precision or personalized medicine. Canadians are aware of genetic discrimination and issues related to privacy and we are fortunate to have legislation – (Bill S-201) Genetic Non-Discrimination Act (GNA) – to protect individuals from disclosing genetic test results to insurers and employers. In this talk we will discuss why this new bill is important for everyone. Dr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg M.D., C.M. is a clinical and metabolic geneticist for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and a clinician scientist at the University of Manitoba, and in the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. Her research focuses on “Rare Genetic Diseases”, translating research discoveries into relevant patient care programs.

SISTERHOOD UPDATE MESSAGE FROM

LOUISE RABER, SISTERHOOD PAST PRESIDENT As I sit down to write this column it is not very warm in Winnipeg. In fact, it’s downright COLD!! However, by the time you read this it will be warmer, and Sisterhood will be in high gear to finish out the 2018-2019 year in style. The Torah Fund Campaign has begun again, and we urge you to send in your donations in ASAP. Sandy Polanski, Torah Fund Chair, is readily available to speak with you and answer any questions you may have. Our 57th Annual Interfaith Lunch is April 30, 2019. World renowned geneticist Dr Cheryl Rockman Greenberg is our guest speaker which promises an interesting and educational afternoon. See the ad on the page to the left of this article. Sisterhood and Mother’s Day mean “Afternoon Tea at the Simkin Centre”. It is always heartwarming to serve our beloved Seniors and enjoy the wonderful entertainment. Please contact Rochelle Pincovich, our Mitzvah Group Chair, if you’d like to help serve the dainties. It is a true mitzvah! Information about the Annual Wind-Up will become available soon. Look for an email coming your way. If you would like more information about Sisterhood and/or wish to receive our emails, please call the Synagogue office and leave a message for either Sandy Polanski or Louise Raber.

Also, leave a message for Carole Jefferies if you’d like to work in the Gift Shop (no sales experience required). To join the Tallit Weaving Class, leave a message for Harriet Lyons or Carol Levi, but don’t wait too long. Classes are already booked into 2021!!! Have questions about Willow Place? Leave a message for Gloria Cantor who chairs this program. She would be pleased to call you back. (Note: The donation bin is under the table in the hallway and the Wish List is on the Sisterhood section of the bulletin board opposite the coat room.) On behalf of the Sisterhood Board and our Members, we’d like to congratulate Alice Weissmann on her retirement as Shaarey Zedek Ritual Secretary. We thank her for the hours and hours she assisted Sisterhood over the years, and we wish her well! Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy Pesach!

Year round, the Gift Shop is always there to provide your needs. We try to cover all necessities, but if you have any ideas or requests please let us know. Also, we are always looking for new volunteers and would love to have you join us. It doesn’t have to be on a regular schedule, a few hours every so often would be greatly appreciated.

A MESSAGE FROM

MARGIE MILLER,

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT, WOMEN'S LEAGUE FOR CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM At our triennial convention in 2017, I was honored to be installed as the 22nd President of Women’s League. I have been attending conventions since the 1980’s. Convention after convention I was in awe of the leaders of this organization, never imagining that one day, I would be standing there accepting the title and responsibilities of this position. Trust me…. I DID NOT take that moment lightly. I always sat there, watching the international officers, the leaders of WL, I’d met through the years, in awe. They were poised, well spoken, bright, knowledgeable, dedicated and beautiful! Who was I? Who am I? I realized I AM YOU! I am JUST a sisterhood member who has followed a path of involvement for over 30 years. At that installation, part of me was still that gal looking up at that stage. I also realized that most likely our next president and all the future leaders of our organization are women just like you, sitting at convention or region conferences and at local sisterhood meetings and events. We serve together with all our strengths and even some of our doubts. That’s the beauty of Women’s League. We offer so many opportunities to achieve goals that we could not even imagine we would set for ourselves. Installations are not only about the leaders, it’s about all the members in an organization. NO president plans to travel her journey alone. So here I am, Hineni…asking you to join me. One of my favorite questions to ask, as well as be asked is: WHY WL? What is our compelling reason to exist? The mission of sisterhood and the agenda of WL are as diverse as our members. Our women are married and single, widowed, divorced and never married. They work and are stay at home moms. Their interests are diverse and their social networking expands their horizons. There is a place for all, in this organization and IF

14

for NO other reason, supporting the collective voice of Jewish women is reason enough to support your sisterhood! WL must remain relevant, so that all Conservative Jewish women will have reason to join us… as we speak up on social issues, as we learn and share together....to ensure our lives, in and out of the synagogue, have meaning and purpose. Women’s League offers two tracks of our materials, programs and initiatives. Our first purpose is focused on the needs of our sisterhoods, so that they have all the resources and support to reach their goals. We also have an ever increasing “menu” of programs and activities tailored for every member, whether she is in a leadership position in her sisterhood or not. These programs are centered on the personal interests of our members. Through technology and outreach, now each and every member can reap the benefits of belonging. OUR long-standing mission to strengthen sisterhoods will always remain, but we now can reach and directly impact each member herself. We have great educational initiatives. We DO NOT want to be the world’s best kept secret!!! We have new technology to go beyond what we currently do. Here’s a simple example: We sponsor a series of 8-10 Distance Workshops each year. They are conference calls, lecture format on a variety of topics that help our sisterhoods with their challenges. Some topics have been membership, budgets, nominating, leadership development, programming and conflict resolution. IF you hold one of those portfolios’ you should make sure you register for the next workshop for your position, they are less than one hour, they are free and they are done as a conference call. These will continue, but now we have the technology to offer smaller “face to face” workshops via a computer program called Zoom so that these workshops can be totally interactive with the facilitator.

We also have the parallel series called “Personal Conversations” with discussions about women’s health, coping with the challenges of life, family, spirituality, etc. These too, can now be offered in the more intimate setting of a zoom call. Our WL Reads invites our women, all our women, to read a selected book, talk about it on line and then share a Q and A with the author via a conference call. This spring, we are offering several Study with Scholars. Women can sit in their homes and get on their computer and have a live, interactive study session with esteemed rabbis and professors. How fabulous is that? That is why it is so important for you to spread the word to every woman in your synagogue! Belonging to WL will enhance their lives. For close to 100 years, to me, the value of a women’s organization has not diminished. Sisterhood is a place where all women should feel included and welcome. Where their voice and contributions are valued and where their needs are met….. social, spiritual and educational. We are a community of women who learn and share together, laugh and cry together as we journey through our lives. These are exciting times. This year, we reached our 100th birthday. My work….our work, must continue the vision and Legacy of our founder, Mathilde Schechter. Today at this Sisterhood Shabbat, we honor our members. How blessed we are, to be here together as part of this dedicated community of women. Some women join to make an impact on the future. Some women join to follow in the footsteps of leaders of the past. Some women join to fulfill their personal goals and learn the skills to enrich their lives, both at home and in the workplace…for themselves and for their families..for their community and the world at large. Women join for many reasons. Sisterhood is the place where all can come and join together to make the quality of their lives bettering all that they do, to be all that they can. Sing of Jewish Women Sing of Jewish women then and now: Celebrate the women of the Book- the Matriarchs and the judges; Honor the dreamers. Sing of Jewish women then and now: Praise the women of the home- the nurturers and the enablers. Hallow the builders. Sing of Jewish women then and now: Salute the women of the world- the leaders and the laborers; Exalt the doers.

Sing of silence, sing of strength Songs of pride, songs of joy Sing of Jewish women then and now: Heroines all. This is truly a community of women past and present who are determined to make sure that all that we do, all that we are, creates a shining torch for the women yet to come. We honor and thank you for all that you do to insure the women of this congregation grow and flourish and take their place among the beautifully women threads of this tapestry called sisterhood. Sisterhood is truly a holy community of women, who dwell together in a house of possibilities.

NURTURING DIFFERENCES, RESPECTING DIVERSITY REBBETZIN DR. ASHIRA MEYERS MASS

WRITTEN IN THE SHABBAT HANDOUT SISTERHOOD SHABBAT - SHABBAT PARASHAT TETZAVEH

Leadership is not about the rewards, the representations of success, or the roles and responsibilities that lead to the title. The Parasha for this week, Tetzaveh, talks about the clothing for the Kohanim (priests) and the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) in particular in exquisite detail. Why is this important? What does it signify? There are many reasons for this, but one in particular is the idea that the clothing represents something for everyone around…. there are specific symbolic details that send a strong message…one that resonates for all of us today. The role of a good leader is to unite, encourage and motivate. How does one do this? What lessons can we learn? What examples do we have? The truth is in today’s world, we have no shortage of resources available to us to learn to be effective leaders. Workshops on communication skills, coaches on conflict management and conflict resolution….endless books on developing and executing a clear vision…. But if we all took just a moment of time to read and reflect about the life of Moshe, our quintessential leader, we could see that the Torah contains all the effective skills and tools we need and we’ve had it at our fingertips for thousands of years. In Parshat Tetzaveh we also learn about the importance and great detail of the Choshen Mishpat. This is the Breastplate of Judgement that was to hang from the shoulders of the Kohen Gadol as part of his priestly garments. In its design, the breastplate was to contain 12 precious stones embedded in it, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev notes the importance of this design and reminds us that all of Israel was equally loved by Hashem. No one was more important than others. This was an important lesson for the Kohen Gadol to avoid an attitude of arrogance or superiority. Instead, it was a reminder of equality among all. This can serve as an important lesson for leaders of today. A reminder that they equally represent all, and as such, they have an important responsibility of uniting all. Finding ways of nurturing differences, respecting diversity while bringing everyone together in a united way. Just as the stones on the Choshen were linked, we too are linked – to each other and to past generations, despite the fact that we live in different places or practice our religion in different ways. We as a global Jewish community experienced a tremendous tragedy last year when we witnessed the mass

shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. This was a horrible tragedy that touched all of us. The outpouring of love, support and prayer to surround the community was tremendous and a reminder of our linkage to each other. We each felt the pain and impact of this act, and have worked together to talk and nurture each other. Let us all reflect on our need to respect each other’s diversity and differences, but commit to supporting and uniting each other as we have been given this beautiful example from the precious stones representing us all. Let us use the examples and symbols from our Priestly Leaders in directing us to a life of support and respect for all. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.” – Psalms 133 Shabbat Shalom.

A BRIEF GUIDE TO ENJOYING PURIM AND PESACH LESLIE EMERY, LAY CLERGY &

PLAYGROUP TEACHER

Purim and Pesach are coming up and it is time to start dreaming and scheming of ways to enjoy the holidays. Fun doesn’t happen by itself you know. However, with each passing year, I am more convinced we need to make fun happen and enjoy the moments life gives us. A family is made up of many demographics and the needs of each generation are different. A family can be the family you are born into or the family you choose. What makes the holidays most meaningful are the pieces that link the generations together, honour the past and create new memories for the future. Purim is full of opportunities for fun. It’s also beautiful to carry our traditions forward or make new ones to share with those you love. Have a hamantashen-making party and a hamantashen-eating contest! Find a Megillah reading and enjoy! Ours is the evening of March 20 and is strategically planned for all ages. Find a carnival! Ours is on March 17 at 3:30p and it is FABULOUS. If you have kids or grandchildren, this is a major highlight of the year for them. Please do not miss

Insurance for your every need. Happy Purim! Your world is complex. Let us make it simple. Put yourself at the center of our network and get a tailored insurance solution. Scott Parker 204.985.8455 Lisa Funk 204.988.1517 Andrea Anderson 204.988.5129

this opportunity! I enjoyed attending the Purim Carnival as a child, planning the Purim Carnival as an adult, and bringing my daughter to the Purim Carnival as a mother, so I can honestly tell you that the Carnival can be enjoyed from many different viewpoints. Come volunteer and smile at the excited faces surrounding you! Pesach follows Purim, arriving about a month later. The Seder meal entails tremendous preparation and offers us a beautiful opportunity to connect and be together. As the years have gone by our traditions have evolved as the demographics of our family have shifted. As a leader of the Seder for the past number of years, I always adapt the service for those who share our table. It strikes me each year that the Seder is the only time of the year when everyone sits down and does the same thing together at the same time. Making our way through the Haggadah, we take turns reading in English, singing in Hebrew, finding space for each person at the table to participate. Over the years, colouring sheets for kids have been introduced and an ad lib telling of the story of the Exodus has been incorporated, but the essence is the same. We are together having a Seder as families have done for generations. Whether you bake hamantashen together, create crafts, attend carnivals, have a Seder together, eat matzah, what I’m really trying to say is this – make moments to enjoy. Family is precious, whether it’s the one you are born into or the one you choose. Spend time together. Be silly. Have fun. Fun doesn’t happen by itself, it takes an instigator. Be that instigator! If you need ideas, send me an email. I have plenty of experience making fun happen. Most of all, find joy in spending time together over Purim and Pesach! Wishing you and your family a Chag Purim Sameach and a Happy Pesach!

THE UNSTOPPABLES… BURIED UNDER THE SNOW AND FROZEN IN -50C…WE’RE ALREADY PLANNING FOR SPRING!

DR RENA SECTER ELBAZE ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION DIRECTOR

When Haman’s decree foretold the demise of the Jewish people, who would have imagined that Queen Esther could turn the situation around and that Mordechai, the Jew, would become Vizier to the King of the Persian Empire… When Joseph sat in Pharaoh’s dungeon, he himself could never have imagined that his incredible skill to interpret dreams could propel him to the highest levels of Pharaoh’s court… When over half of World Jewry perished in the Holocaust, who could have imagined that the Modern State of Israel could have emerged from the ashes… Yet these miracles came to happen just as

the seed, buried deep beneath the snow, in the coldest days of February, will once again crack open the surface of the Earth, and become a mighty tree. So on the coldest weekend of the year, Congregation Shaarey Zedek hosted three incredible, uplifting events to motivate and inspire our community. We started out strong on Friday evening, January 18th, with a rousing musical Kabbalat Shabbat service lead by Rabbi Leibl. The Chapel overflowed with people but also with the traditional melodies of Shabbos as everyone sang along. Eighty people came out to the delicious dinner that followed sponsored by the Shenkarow family. Young and old alike enjoyed a delicious chicken meal and the heartwarming music of Rabbi Mass and Leslie Emery with the vibrant Dor Chadash singers. On the Sunday evening, January 20th, Art @ the Zedek celebrated Tu B’Shevat with a multi-artist exhibit that has brought the beauty of nature and trees into the central space of the synagogue’s lower level. Following the exhibit opening, Shaarey Zedek partnered with Jewish National Fund to host a Tu B’Shevat Seder featuring our Rabbis and a special wine and fruit ceremony including a unique wine tasting experience curated by Patrick Elazar. This evening of epicure, poetry and music was a true delight to all the senses and a reminder, that even though the springtime might seem very far in the distance, it is right around the corner… Purim and Passover will soon be upon us and we invite you to check out our dynamic programming including the Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 17th, the Megillah Reading and After Party for the whole family on Wednesday, March 20th and in April, our participative Passover Seder and the Passover Lunch and Learn sessions. Our adult learning will continue into the spring and we have many things to look forward to as Shaarey Zedek continues along its process of renewal and growth. Watch for our Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) celebrations on Sunday, June 2nd, which will include a Jerusalem themed Art @ the Zedek exhibit opening, a concert by the Winnipeg Jewish Chorus and an outdoor Israeli style barbecue! If you would like to know more, or would like to get involved, please feel free to call me at 204-975-3489 or send me an email to rena@szwinnipeg.ca. Warm Regards!

On one of the coldest weekends of the year, Congregation Shaarey Zedek hosted a three day celebration of …the rebirth of nature and the Jewish New Year of Trees; Tu B’Shevat! How does one contemplate the renewal of nature, when it is buried under three feet of snow and frozen in -50 C temperatures! Yet, as Jewish history has shown, when things seem to be as low as they can get, renewal and rebirth IS possible.
