5779 // 2018

We’re already looking forward to the High Holy Days and to seeing all of you again as we bring in the new year of 5779. These will be our first services without Rabbi Green in nearly two decades, marking a significant time of transition for our congregation, but we are truly honoured for this opportunity to build on the innovations we started with him and put our own spin on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We’re thrilled to have Justin Odwak and the Quartet back as well as Leslie Emery leading the Family Service, and we’re excited to unveil major enhancements to our Machzor and our Yizkor Book, both of which will make these services even more engaging, relevant, and inspiring. Nobody’s going to go home the same. We hope you’ll join us. And don’t forget to think of our Executive Chef, Joel Lafond, and his team when you’re planning the menus for your holiday lunches and dinners. Shanah Tovah!

HOUSEHOLD GOODS FOR NEW YAZIDI REFUGEE FAMILIES

Thank you to everyone who donated items and circulated information about the last campaign to collect household goods and furniture for refugees in the Winnipeg Yazidi community. Here is a project update from our friends at Operation Ezra: Yazidi Resettlement Winnipeg —

Another very successful day at the warehouse yesterday. Over 20 government families came and were given time to pick what they needed or wanted. Several vans were brought by volunteers from the Yazidi community to load and deliver the items at the end of the day. The warehouse space was generously donated by Mel Lazareck. Lots of space and very accessible. ** Kitchenware, linens and towels and sofas are still needed so we will continue to collect, store and deliver over the summer months. Please contact Operation Ezra at operationezra1@gmail.com if you have new or gently used items listed above available for donation. **

CAN WE BE DOING BETTER? MESSAGE FROM

LORNE WEISS, PRESIDENT

That is the question that many of us will be asking ourselves as we near the fast-approaching holy days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is also the very question that all of us at Shaarey Zedek will be asking about our synagogue. Likely, both of our answers will be the same. YES! The next question could be, “Are we doing better than this time last year?” Here at Shaarey Zedek I can answer, “YES”! In the past year we have seen the positive impact of our dynamic rabbinic team of Rabbis Leibl and Mass. Our attendance for our Shabbat morning services and the Family Services, under the direction of Leslie Emery, has continued to increase. The daily minyan has also continued to grow and strengthen to become a unique achievement in our city of a twice-daily minyan under the ongoing stewardship of Bill Weissmann and the recent addition of Bonnie Robinson. We are hosting more lifecycle events such as b’nai mitzvah, weddings, and general family celebrations. And thanks to the efforts of our Executive Director, Ian Staniloff, our membership is growing. Our programming and outreach continue to grow and expand thanks to Dr. Rena Elbaze and Rabbis Mass and Leibl.

Chef Joel Lafond and his team keep raising the bar on the quality of their product and service. Remember, they catered the food for 800 people at the JNF Gala this spring. It all sounds pretty good and positive; and it is. But there is more to this story. We can still do better. To find out more, please join me on the first day of Rosh Hashanah at Shaarey Zedek. SHOFAR - SO GOOD MESSAGE FROM RABBI MATTHEW LEIBL

With a playful smile, Heather casually said, “I think I could do it.” “What?!?!” “Oh, for sure. I bet it's just like playing the French horn.” When Heather was younger, she did, in fact, play the French horn. And won some competitions, I might add. But in the ten years we'd been together, she’d never played for me. Not once. So you can imagine my reaction when she casually picked up my shofar (given to me as a gift once upon a time) and, on the first try, with what seemed like no effort at all, belted out one of the most powerful and magnificent “tekiahs” I'd ever heard! It frightened our cat something awful, but it blew me away. Six weeks later, after building up her stamina and mastering the three different calls, she was sounding the shofar in front of the congregation on Rosh Hashanah. After, I asked how it felt. “Exhilarating and terrifying,” she said. “All at the same time.” What a perfect answer, I thought. After all, the sound of the shofar is supposed to convey so many different, somewhat-conflicting emotions simultaneously. It's meant to mimic the heart-breaking sound of crying, of wailing, and yet it's also the sound of battle, of declaration, of triumph. It’s the sound of the present, the here and now, grabbing our attention, forcing us to listen, and yet it's also the sound of the past, of memory, of ancient times and of Rosh Hashanah services we remember from when we were younger. And it's also the sound of the future, of something new and important coming, of possibility, of potential. Of God. (Don't forget, the call of the shofar emanated from Mount Sinai.)

204 452 3711

/ShaareyZedekWinnipeg

For a primitive instrument with major musical limitations, it’s amazing how much it says with just one note. When we redesigned our High Holy Day services at Shaarey Zedek three years ago, we decided to put the shofar at the very beginning. Before any prayers. Before the Torah. Before anything. Totally unconventional. But, really, what else could possibly go first? Hockey has the opening face-off. Football has the kickoff. An Olympic race has the shotgun start. And a horse race has the trademark bugle call. Even the New York Stock Exchange has the opening bell. Iconic events deserve iconic openings. This is ours. The perfect sound to kick off the marquee services of the year. To ring in the New Year. Literally. We have this funny convention of showing up late to synagogue services. It's an understandable reaction to the unbearably-long services of the past. But times have changed and so should our customs. Our services are much shorter now. Now our idea - our dream - is for everyone to be together for the whole service. Start to finish. Shofar to Adon Olam. So, this Rosh Hashanah, come for the very beginning. Don't come late. Don't miss the shofar. Be there as “tekiah”, “shvarim”, and “truah” echo through our packed sanctuary, setting the tone for a 5779 full of possibility and hope. For all of us. After all, you'd never want to miss the opening face-off of a Jets playoff game, would you? Heather and I want to wish you Shanah Tovah u’Metukah - a sweet, healthy, and happy new year.

It happened last summer. My wife, Heather, and I were chatting about the upcoming High Holy Day services and I decided to confess my greatest synagogue shame. No matter how hard I try, I cannot blow the shofar. Ask me to lead the davening, chant from the Torah, or even give a sermon, and I can do it. But pass me that hollowed-out ram’s horn and you're going to be disappointed. (Unless the sound you're looking for is the pathetic sputtering of a car engine that won't start.) I've tried. I just don't have what it takes.

CONCEALED MIRACLE WORKERS MESSAGE FROM Photo credit: Elaine Halpert

RABBI ANÍBAL MASS

A very humble Rabbi dies and goes to Heaven. God decided to honour this humble man in a special way... He sent Elijah the Prophet to welcome the Rabbi. “Welcome to Heaven”, said Elijah. “Sorry, but I can’t enter”, said the Rabbi. ‘What a humble man’, thought Elijah, as he went to report to God about the situation. God was so impressed by such humility that He decided to send Avraham to welcome the Rabbi. “Welcome to Heaven”, said Avraham. “Sorry, but I can’t enter”, said the Rabbi. ‘What a humble man’, thought Avraham, as he went to report to God about the situation. God was so impressed by such humility that He decided to send Moses to receive the Rabbi. “Welcome to Heaven”, said Moses. “Sorry, but I can’t enter”, said the Rabbi. ‘What a humble man’, thought Moses, as he went to report to God about the situation. So, God went to talk to this Rabbi in person. “Welcome to Heaven”, said God. “Sorry, but I can’t enter”, said the Rabbi. God, a little confused, asked the Rabbi: “Tell me something. I sent you Elijah, Avraham, Moses, and even I came in person to welcome you. Why in this world can’t you enter?” “I’ve been a humble person all my life”, reply the Rabbi, “where are the photographers???”

I want to talk to you today about “Concealed Miracle Workers”. As I reviewed the past Jewish year to get an inspiration for this article, I noticed all the tragic incidents, painful situations and unnecessary deaths in a challenging world. But at the same time, I discovered inspiring moments where hope, joy, healing, restoration, construction and redemption could be found. Perhaps one of the most significant of these awe-inspiring moments was on Monday July 2nd, when Navy Seal Rescuers found all 12 boys and their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand, more than a week after they disappeared and initiated a desperate search that drew international help and captivated the world. We all saw the images of the Divers and the Navy Seals going into the cave, but today I want to focus on those other inconspicuous miracle workers who contributed to the miracle from behind the scenes. The Thai workers who prepared pipes for an attempt to drain water from a flooded cave during a search and rescue operation.

A Massage Therapist providing family members and rescue staff traditional massage therapy to ease the physical trauma... for free. The Farmers residing near the cave who had no reservation in sacrificing their fields and livelihood so that water could be pumped out from the caves, even though it meant losing an entire year’s worth of crops. The volunteers who cooked and delivered food to the rescue team. The owner of the local washing machine store who did freewashing and dry cleaning of the rescue team’s and divers’ clothes everyday. An Israeli company that immediately donated 100,00 dollars worth of communication devices to be used by the recue team. The people from all over Thailand who came to the entrance of Tham Luang Nang Non cave to pray for a successful rescue for the 12 trapped children and their coach. These are people who didn’t stop to calculate if their participation was worth it based on how much recognition they will have. These are people who were happy and

Choosing Judaism Graduation Sunday, June 17, 2018

content by knowing that they were helping the Navy Team to rescue all the boys without expecting anything in return. This is what the Rabbis describe as True Chessed, True Acts of Lovingkindness, where all the efforts were done in a completely altruistic way. Where the only “payment” was the satisfaction of being part of the miracle. My challenge for you in this New Year is to get inspired by this amazing story and to be a concealed miracle worker, striving to bring hope, joy, healing, restoration, construction and redemption to this world without expecting anything in return. From my family to yours, Shanah Tovah

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' MESSAGE FROM

IAN STANILOFF

With Rabbi Alan Green’s retirement now officially in place, (more about that later), Rabbis Aníbal Mass and Matthew Leibl have assumed firm control over the Ritual Department at our shul. With the change in clergy, there came an opportunity to reassess what the Shaarey Zedek of the 21st Century should strive to become. They both felt very strongly that we should continue down the path we have chosen of becoming even more welcoming and inclusive. The growth in our Shabbat service numbers speaks directly to the successful transition to a shorter, more musical and most importantly, more engaging Shabbat morning. We have almost doubled the number of regular attendees on Shabbat which is forcing us to frequently spill over to our sanctuary to accommodate everybody. If you haven’t attended a service in a while, I suggest you drop by on a Shabbat morning and experience in person what so many others have now discovered. In order not only to maintain, but continue to grow our synagogue, our rabbis felt it important that we expand our Ritual Department to ensure the needs of all our congregants are met. Effective July 1st, Bonnie Robinson has joined our staff on a full-time basis. Bonnie will continue to lead morning services as well as provide assistance on the bimah on Shabbat, as the backup Torah reader and Gabbai. Leslie Emery has now become a full-time member of our ritual team. She will continue to lead the very popular Shabbat Family Service which will now be offered on most Saturday mornings. Leslie will also be providing b’nai mitzvah and Hebrew tutoring for those who require as well as leading the extremely popular High Holy Day Family Services. She will also provide backup services as a Torah reader when necessary. Lay Clergy (Shammes), Bill Weissmann, our longest tenured ritual team member and longtime Minyan leader, will continue in his role at the minyan, but will now share the duties with Leslie and Bonnie to allow him to provide

204 452 3711

/ShaareyZedekWinnipeg

much needed pastoral care and hospital/home visitations. Bill will also provide relief to our rabbis by performing funerals on an as-needed basis. As you may all be aware, we have been providing an audio broadcast of all our services over the last 18 months. This has proven to be very successful in reaching out to many people who want to be connected but due to circumstances are not able to attend. Recognizing the success of these audio broadcasts and understanding the potential growth in this area, congregants Harriet and Ted Lyons and family have generously donated a state-of-the-art video system which allows for a complete broadcast of not only our Shabbat services, but all our life cycle events as well. This will now include weddings, funerals, b’nai mitzvahs, etc. This will now allow out of town families and friends to be a part of each of these services no matter where in the world they may be located. It also allows those who are, in Winnipeg but unable to attend in person, an opportunity to be a part of these events. We can’t thank Ted, Harriet and family enough for bringing our community closer together. I mentioned earlier that Rabbi Green has now officially retired. However, you may not be aware that he has been bestowed with the title of Rabbi Emeritus and has agreed to return occasionally to Shaarey Zedek over the next few years to provide holiday rabbinic relief or scholarin-residence assistance. Stay tuned for announcements in the new year as to when you can expect a Rabbi Green appearance. Combined with our very strong programming department, a second-to-none catering department led by Executive Chef, Joel Lafond, and a committed Board of Directors led by President Lorne Weiss, we feel very we have strongly positioned Shaarey Zedek to move forward in meeting the needs of our congregation and community for many years to come! I look forward to seeing you all at Shaarey Zedek during the High Holy Days! L’Shanah Tovah

SISTERHOOD UPDATE

Louise Raber, Sisterhood Past President One year ends with an extremely successful program, and a new one begins with another very special event.

We had the best closing event ever in June. If you weren’t there, then you missed a truly phenomenal program. The seventy people in attendance were delighted to meet our new Rebbitzins up close and in person. Dr. Ashira Meyers Mass and Heather Wadsworth are engaging, well-educated and very kind young women. Ashira, besides being a mother extraordinaire, is a worldrenowned microbiologist/virologist. Heather is a family lawyer with PK/Petersen King, and, thanks to her years of playing the French horn, has started a new tradition of blowing shofar for Shaarey Zedek! We thank Ashira and Heather and look forward to their involvement in Sisterhood for many, many years to come. The 2018-19 year will kick off with a fantastic event on Thursday evening, October 25, which you won’t want to miss! The Women’s League of Congregations Etz Chayim and Shaarey Zedek together will welcome as guest speaker,

Prior to the October program, Membership Chair, Laurie Shapiro, will send you the 2018-19 Membership Renewal Reminder. Please take a moment to send in your dues, which is still only $36. Sisterhood is committed to continuing its support of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, Simkin Centre, Willow Place, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and the Torah Fund, but those costs keep rising. Therefore, if you are able, please consider contributing more than the basic $36 and help us continue the good works Sisterhood has done for over 89 years! On behalf of Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood, thank you. I wish you all a Shana Tovah Umetukah!

THERE’S MAGIC AT THE MINYAN LESLIE EMERY, LAY CLERGY &

PLAYGROUP TEACHER

In my early 20s I began what became a seven year journey as the Torah reader for Shaarey Zedek’s daily Minyan. I had never attended Minyan regularly in the past, but I had read Torah many times as a volunteer. In my time at the Minyan I discovered many meaningful Jewish rituals I had never experienced first-hand. I have also met some incredible people I will never forget. Recently I was formally made a part of Shaarey Zedek’s Ritual Team, an opportunity that I am very grateful for and humbled by. The morning Minyan is back in my regular rhythm and am enjoying the camaraderie, the support, the rituals and the opportunity to daven and express gratitude more regularly. After the High Holy Days there are a series of rituals that are observed at our morning Minyan service, that you may or may not be aware of. Many of us have held a lulav and etrog, but how many of us have had the opportunity to shake them during Hallel? Sukkot is beautiful and one of my favorite Jewish holidays. Sometimes I feel as though I have stepped out of time when experiencing Sukkot, shaking a lulav and etrog as

our ancestors have done for thousands of years. Sukkot ends with Hoshanah Rabah which falls on Sunday, September 30th this year. For those of you who aren’t early morning people, the service begins at a friendly 9:00 am. At this service we complete seven Hoshanot, special prayers that are recited while participating in processions, each individual carrying a lulav and etrog. Following the Hoshanot we take willow branches and strike the pews (or ground depending on where you observe the holiday) five times. Most of us have never observed Sukkot at Shul, but I would highly recommend it. There is something beautiful and deeply meaningful in carrying our most ancient rituals into modern times. Over the years I have often thought that there’s magic at the Minyan. Not only have I discovered and experienced rituals I had never participated in, perhaps most importantly I discovered an amazing cohort of individuals supporting each other through life’s most difficult times. Some of the lessons I have learned at the Minyan have shaped me as an adult and I am grateful for the wisdom shared by those I have met over the years. Words from the heart, reach the heart. Without hope there is nothing. Life is short and unpredictable, make your moments count. Love, live and find joy where you can. More than one person has said the Minyan has saved their life. There is magic at the Minyan and I hope over the course of the year, you choose to experience the magic for yourself. Our Minyan is a special place, the heartbeat of our Shul. Wishing you and yours a Happy Healthy and Sweet New Year. Shanah Tovah U’Metukah,

MESSAGE FROM

DR RENA SECTER ELBAZE ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION DIRECTOR

In the modern business world, companies annually gather their members to review the year, to assess whether their actions align with their goals and if they have achieved their objectives. They call this an AGM or Annual General Meeting and a quorum is required to do this. They may not call it “Minyan” but no decision can be validated without this critical mass. Each individual employee also goes through an annual review process and identifies potential professional development requirements to help them succeed. There is something very familiar in this modern management process, to us as Jews. As a people and as individual members of the “tribe”, we have been doing these annual evaluations for thousands of years! Every year, the full month leading up to Rosh Hashanah is a time for us to start evaluating our own actions AND our actions as a community. Judaism allots a specific time for this, not taking for granted that this activity will happen on its own. Then for a set 10-day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we purposefully review our relationships, come clean of any poor behaviour, and define strategies to BE better and DO better by others and before G-d.

special outdoor Havdallah service and a musical Kirtan1 Selichot2 service. This third annual Kirtan style service will feature Rabbi Anibal Mass on the harmonium, with participation by Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze, Bill Weissmann on the tambourine, Jay Stoller on the drums, and Patrick Elazar on the guitar.

We even have personal advisors, our Rabbis, who can help us find strength and guidance on how to confront such insurmountable tasks such as coping with loss and mourning but also how to live better, how to love better, when to give and when to receive.

Shana Tova; A Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!

If you would like to DO better and BE better, use this pre-Rosh Hashanah period to challenge yourself. Review your goals, your behaviour and listen to your inner voice. To kick-start the process, join us for A Late Summer Evening of Music, Art & Introspection on Saturday, August 25th at 8:30 PM. We will begin our evening with the opening of our High Holy Day themed Art @ the Zedek exhibit and a reception featuring East Indian desserts followed by a

1 Kirtan, is a Sanskrit word that means “narrating, reciting, telling, describing” of an idea or story. It also refers to a genre of religious performance arts, connoting a musical form of narration or shared recitation, particularly of spiritual or religious ideas. 2 Selichot from the Hebrew root selicha or forgiveness, are communal prayers for Divine forgiveness, said during the High Holiday season or on Jewish fast days. 3 Pirkei Avot or “Ethics of the Fathers” refers to a body of teachings on how to be a better person.

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, we transition into the New Year through a period of preparation. There is of course the preparation which involves buying seats for synagogue services and the preparation that inevitably involves thinking about holiday meals, but most importantly, there’s the introspection…this is the hard part. How often do we actually stop along our paths and really assess if we are going in the right direction? Have we really thought about our destination? Our goal? and… do we have a strategy to actually achieve it? How fortunate we are that Judaism has built in this time for us to reconsider what really counts in life. If you ever doubted Judaism’s relevancy in today’s world, take a moment to consider this…

WHAT IS MERCAZ AND WHY DO WE NEED IT NOLA LAZAR, SECRETARY OF THE BOARD, MERCAZ-CANADA

In February, I attended a MERCAZ Leadership Conference with 35 Delegates from 15 countries to prepare for the 2020 World Zionist Congress. MERCAZ is the Conservative Movement’s Zionist organization. There, the World Zionist Organization elects officers and decides on WZO policies for the next five years, which affect decisions at the Knesset. I discovered new Conservative programs. NOAM is the USY equivalent. Teens graduate to a young professional division - MAROM. These young adults are passionate about Conservative Judaism in ways you rarely hear from Canadian Conservative Jews. I would love MAROM in Winnipeg! It was inspiring to be around people who were passionate about Conservative Judaism for all that it is, not just for what it’s not. After a seminar on State and Religion in Israel, we met with Members of Knesset Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid Chair), Yuli Edelstein (Likud, Speaker of the Knesset), Tzipi Livni (Zionist Union), Yitzhak “Boojy” Herzog (Zionist Union, Leader of the Opposition) and Yael Cohen-Paran (Zionist Union), a practicing Masorti Jew. Each discussed bills of importance to Jewish pluralism in Israel, including the Egalitarian Plaza at the Kotel, equal funding for all religious streams, marriage and the Nation State Bill. We celebrated Masorti Israel’s 40th anniversary - 400 Jews from Israel and around the world learning together. A highlight was Rabbi Gershom Sizimou. Black, Ugandan and Conservative, the Abayudaya converted over 100 years ago. He sang prayers to traditional Ugandan rhythms, told stories of home and spoke about serving in Uganda’s Parliament and the struggles of his community to be recognized by Israel’s government. 650 people attended the gala dinner. Why is MERCAZ important enough to devote hours of my time? Why should you, a member of a Conservative synagogue in Winnipeg, think that Israeli politics are important? I care because I go. I want to be able to experience Judaism in Israel in a personally meaningful way. But also because Israel is affected. Children of immigrants, who grew up in Israel and served in Tzahal are deemed “not Jewish” to be married. Fallen soldiers may not

204 452 3711

be buried with their comrades because they are “not Jewish.” A non-Orthodox Rabbi conducting a wedding ceremony can be fined or imprisoned. Paradoxically, in Israel Jews do not have full freedom of religion. What happens in Israel affects our religious life. The Rabbinate in Israel does not accept non-Orthodox conversions. Many who consider conversion choose Orthodox over Conservative in case they or their children want to make aliyah. Letters from Conservative rabbis for individuals making aliyah are not always accepted. Should our rabbis be considered in any way less than other rabbis! Each Zionist Organization, secular or religious, sends representatives to the Congress. Mizrachi is Orthodox, ARZA - Reform and MERCAZ represents us, the Conservative/Masorti movement. MERCAZ is the avenue to infuse our values into Israeli politics and society. As the Congress approaches we need members to make a difference! Currently Canada has 20 delegates, which are divided roughly based on membership and historical division. This time we will likely have an election requiring a strong, active membership. MERCAZ also provides educational materials through MERCAZ-Canada, MERCAZ Olami and the WZO. Celebrate Israel@70 has interesting links and videos that are well worth the time. https://70years.mgcsdev.com/ Connection to MERCAZ is an excellent way to remain connected to the larger Conservative Jewish world. I know all of us here are strong advocates for Israel. Let us all advocate for an Israel with which we can identify and be proud. Membership is only $18 and for those 18 -25 years old, only $9.
