What is Chanukah? It’s probably the simplest of all Jewish festivals. The Chanukah ritual consists of a couple of blessings, and the lighting of the Chanukiah—the special nine-branched candelabra—reminding us of the Golden Menorah that once stood in the Temple in Jerusalem.

only two different aspects of experience. But the truth is, as cultural values, they are deeply incompatible. The demise of Greek and Roman civilization should inspire us to take a hard look at our own. The Roman empire was all-powerful in its day, and it prevailed for most of a thousand years. But it was destroyed in the end. Why? Moral restraint disappeared, and individualism became the order of the day. According to Bertrand Russel, the result was that Rome fell “under the domination of nations less civilized than themselves, but not so destitute of social cohesion”. This is a warning we ignore at our own peril. Tragic civilizations eventually disintegrate and die. Lacking any sense of transcendent meaning, they lose the moral restraints upon which continuity depends. Happiness is sacrificed for pleasure. The future is sold in exchange for the present. Europe’s declining birth rates, and the West’s ecological irresponsibility are two glaring examples of how we too seem to be going the way of ancient Rome. Greece and its culture of tragedy eventually died. Judaism and its culture of hope survived. The Chanukah lights are a beautiful symbol of that survival, and of our refusal to completely sell out to the superficial glamour of modern secular culture. Nine tiny lights of Chanukah might seem like an insignificant thing. But it takes very little light to dispel a great deal of darkness. Lighting the lights of Chanukah reminds us of all that is truly important in life. On those little lights, the very survival of Western civilization may depend.

We celebrate Chanukah for eight days, each day lighting one light more than the day before. We chant blessings, sing songs, exchange gifts, and eat potato Latkes. Chanukah is a mere blip, compared to the pomp and ceremony of Christmas. So what makes Chanukah so significant a holiday? What can Chanukah possibly teach us moderns today? Beyond the candles and potato pancakes, Chanukah celebrates the Jewish fight for religious freedom against the Syrian Greeks, twenty-two centuries ago. This was the original “clash of civilizations”—perhaps the first in recorded history. Moreover, it was a conflict between the two great cultures that gave rise to our modern Western civilization: ancient Greece, and ancient Israel. Because we take this synthesis for granted today, we can barely imagine how ancient Greece and ancient Israel could have come to blows. Two thousand years ago, this synthesis created Christianity; the first Christians were Jews; and the first Christian texts were composed in Greek. That same synthesis also existed in Judaism, though it never became mainstream. Nevertheless, twenty-two centuries ago, Greece and Israel were at odds. They had very different ways of understanding the universe, society, and individual life. These days, people talk about the clash between radical Islam and the West. But far too little is said about this ancient clash within the West itself--the clash that Chanukah recalls from two millennia ago. The English poet and social commentator Matthew Arnold used to write about the contrast between Hellenism and Hebraism in 19th century England. According to Arnold, Hellenism—the influence of ancient Greece--was all about art and the imagination. Its great ideal was the pursuit of beauty. Hebraism—the influence of ancient Israel--was all about ethics and morality. Its great ideal was the pursuit of righteousness. Arnold felt that the Victorian England of his day was too much about Hebraism, and too little about Hellenism. In the context of the extreme moral strictures, the rigidly hierarchical society, and the oppression of both the men and women of that time, Arnold probably was correct. However, today we suffer from the opposite problem. Our secular culture, with its cult of celebrity, its worship of the body, its deification of science, and its rejection of religion is profoundly Hellenistic. Hebraic values such as the sanctity of life, fidelity in marriage, modesty in dress, and inner worth rather than ostentatious displays of wealth and power are all in decline. We need to go back to the Roman Emperor Constantine’s conversion to Christianity in the 4th century CE to find an era as Hellenistic as our own. Ancient Greek mythology and theatre gave the world the concept of tragedy. But ancient Biblical Israel gifted humanity with the ideal of hope. In common parlance “hope” and “tragedy” are

As we celebrate the miracle of Chanukah and approach the end of the secular year it is an appropriate time to take a step back and reflect on the year past and to anticipate what 2018 may bring. This past year marked the first of my two year term as President of Congregation Shaarey Zedek; and what year it has been. It has been a year of building; building on the foundation and successes of Past President Uri Kraut and his board of directors and the presidents and boards that preceded him. I’ve also learned how strong we can be, when all of us, volunteers, clergy, and administration pull together in the same direction. 2017 was a busy year for Shaarey Zedek. Increasing numbers of lifecycle events kept our clergy, our catering, and our maintenance people busier than ever. Highlights of the year included our scholar-in-residence program this past spring featuring Ron Wolfson who led us through a weekend of introspection and discussion to ensure that our synagogue continues on the path of becoming a welcoming place, was a great success! Throughout the year, our community demonstrated support for the changes that were made to our Shabbat services in the most visible way; by attending. Our attendance figures have more than doubled. During the summer Matthew Leibl and Cantor Aníbal Mass received their S’micha and became Rabbis Leibl and Mass. We celebrated that milestone with their installation as Rabbis at Shaarey Zedek in November where 300 of you attended a Friday night dinner in their honour and 450 joined us on Shabbat for services and their installation as out Rabbis. Our High Holy Day services saw an increase of over 200 people in attendance as a result of our Executive Director’s initiative to reach out to those who have not attended services for the past few years. But, that isn’t everything. This past year many of you donated furniture, countless hours of volunteerism and money to sustain the two Yazidi families that our shul sponsored. They are coming to the end of the year of sponsorship and with our help they have transitioned beautifully and I’m confident that they will have
rewarding futures in their new homeland. Our Family Service has been an outstanding success on Shabbat and during the High Holy Days. Programming has been keeping everyone busy with a variety of programs and events ranging from Bubbies, Zaides and Babies to Tikun Olam programming and outreach to 20’s & 30’s to name a few. Also, we can be justifiably proud of our record of having a minyan twice a day, everyday; a rarity in most cities in North America! And of course we can’t forget the stream of adult education courses offered throughout the year including an extremely popular Choosing Judaism course. All in all a very busy and rewarding year. Looking forward into 2018 we have begun the planning of a very special weekend celebrating Rabbi Alan Green’s long service at Shaarey Zedek and honouring him on his retirement. Mark your calendars for the weekend beginning April 26, 2018. You won’t want to miss it! 2018 will see the results of the re-decorating and updating of our auditorium space and the installation of a video system. The re-newed auditorium space will be the first major enhancement since 1970 and will provide a more attractive and useable venue for community celebrations and life cycle events; a great enhancement to our outstanding catering department. The new video system will allow those who are separated by distance or physical disability to participate more fully in our services and lifecycle events. So, lots of changes. But one thing that will not change is our commitment to continue to be Relevant, Engaging and Flexible. Chag Chanukah Sameach!

WHAT IS CHANUKAH? MESSAGE FROM RABBI ANIBAL MASS

Chanukah begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev and it lasts for eight days. The Hebrew word “Chanukah”could mean both “inauguration” and “education” (it has the same root as the Hebrew word for education, “Chinuch”). This not a biblical holiday, but rather, was established by the Rabbis. What do we celebrate? Although we technically commemorate the military victory of the Maccabees against the Greek-Syrian empire in the 4th century B.C.E., the Talmud insists that we should understand Chanukah as a spiritual victory. The Greeks thought they had brought “light” to world, and tried to impose their beliefs to every nation they conquered, believing that their culture and lifestyle was superior. They tried to impose their culture and religious practices to the Jews, prohibiting them to observe Shabbat, to perform the circumcision or to teach Torah. The Revolt - Mattathias and his Children In the year 168 B.C.E., Mattathias ben Johanan, a Jewish Priest, had to witness how the Greeks were profaning the temple with the enthronement of idols in our holiest places. Mattathias and his five children left Jerusalem and decided to plan a rebellion against the Greeks. About a year later, Mattathias died and Judah, one of his sons, led an army of Jewish dissidents to victory over the Greeks in guerrilla warfare.

The term “Maccabees” used to describe the Jewish army is probably taken from the Hebrew word for “hammer”. After almost seven years of fights, the victorious Maccabees entered Jerusalem and purified the Temple once again, re-establishing traditional Jewish worship there and installing Jonathan Maccabee as high priest. The Miracle of the Oil The Talmud presents an account of the miracle that happened after Jonathan Maccabee and the priests cleansed the Temple. We read in the Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 21b: “When the royal Hasmonean family overpowered and was victorious over the Greeks, they searched and found only a single cruse of pure oil... enough to light the menorah for a single day. A miracle occurred, and they lit the menorah with this oil for eight days. In the following year, they established these eight days as days of festivity and praise and thanksgiving to God”. Customs of Chanukah We light a special 9 arms candelabra called “Chanukiah” to remember the miracle of the oil burning for eight days instead of one. Eight candles representing each of the eight days are in a line and the ninth candle (called “Shamash”, “servant”) is out of place, either at a different height or in a different position on the Chanukiah. We also remember the miracle of the oil by eating fried foods. There is a tradition to play with a “Sevivon”, or “Dreidel”, that has a Hebrew letter on each one of its four sides: “Nun” – “Guimmel” – “Hey” – “Shin”. A traditional reading of these four letters is that they stand for: “NES - GADOL - HAYA – SHAM” (“a great miracle happened there”) in reference to the miracle of the oil and the military victory that happened in the Land of Israel. Deeper Meanings of Chanukah Even though the Talmud puts all the emphasis on the miracle of the oil, the military revolt against the Greeks was an inspiration for many generations to fight against injustice, oppression, and religious freedom. According to Kabbalah, the dreidel represents the struggle between the rational, physical, and spiritual forces within us. “Nun” = “nefesh”, soul. “Gimmel” = “guf”, body. “Shin” = “sechel”, mind. And “Hey” – “hakol”, all. There are moments when the soul is in control; moments when bodily desires are in control; moments when logic rules, but nothing compares to the harmony of all aspects working together. Exactly as it happened during the times of the Maccabees when military leaders, spiritual leaders and intellectual leaders fought together, in harmony, to defeat the Greeks. Ten years later, I still think of Hussain as Chanukah approaches and I smile. I think of all those friends who let me share my traditions with them. I feel proud that I was able to be an ambassador for being Jewish. Because that’s what Chanukah is all about. It’s about being proud of who we are and sharing it. The Talmud knows this when it says the key to Chanukah is publicizing the miracle. That’s why we put the chanukiah in the window for people passing by to see. The candles are meant to be displayed to the secular world just like the mezuzot on our doors. Like a badge of honour. Every year when I light the candles and sing Ma’oz Tzur, I see Hussain’s face and hear his humming, and I’m reminded of that. Chag Sameach and Happy Chanukah!

I lived on campus in a special dorm called the Roost. It was located above the journalism school and reserved for students in our program. 12 of us lived up there. I was the only one who was Jewish. And for most of my roommates, I was the first Jewish person they’d ever met. (For most of the people in my program, in fact.) Chanukah fell early that year. The first candle was set for December 4th. A Tuesday night. There’s no way I’d be going back to Winnipeg this close to winter break. This was going to be my first Chanukah away from home. I was disappointed. For sure. Chanukah was always such a special time in my house growing up. I loved the latkes and sufganiyot, and all the get-togethers with family friends, but I really loved my family’s routine of lighting the candles and singing Ma’oz Tzur. We never missed a night. I decided being away from Winnipeg wasn’t going to stop me. I would bring the power of Chanukah to the Roost! I picked up a chanukiah and a box of candles from the synagogue as well as a few dreidels. We had this routine of watching “Jeopardy!” every night in the Roost. So that Tuesday night after “Jeopardy!”, I set up my chanukiah in the common room, sang the blessings, lit the candles, and belted out Ma’oz Tzur. A handful of my roommates caught the show that first night. They took turns spinning dreidels and then asked me to explain what Chanukah was all about. So I told them the story. The triumph of the Maccabees. The miracle of the oil. I told them about the letters on the dreidel and why we eat latkes. The glowing, softly-smoking candles of the chanukiah were like a camp fire and we were all sitting around it as I shared the stories. Every night we had a new audience, as other roommates joined us. A few classmates hanging around the school also popped by a couple of times. Every night I went through the same routine: “Jeopardy!”, candles, Ma’oz Tzur, dreidels, story. Every night for all eight nights. Lots of people caught multiple nights, but only one person caught all eight. That was my roommate Hussain. He was also 22 and from Grand Prairie, Alberta. He was brilliant and creative, but also a party animal and totally outrageous. He was like my version of Kramer, only he lived down the hall instead of across it. I was the first Jewish person he’d ever known. He was fascinated with all the Chanukah stuff. Especially Ma’oz Tzur. He used to say, “We’re singing songs of salvation, Matt!” after I told him the opening words meant “Rock of Salvation.” And, though he never quite figured out all the words, by the last night he knew the tune so well he could hum the whole thing from beginning to end – a Chanukah miracle in itself!

When Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Ron Wolfson visited Shaarey Zedek last spring, he spoke to our congregation about building a kehillah kedoshah or “sacred community’. He describes this concept in his book: The Spirituality of Welcoming: How to Transform Your Congregation into a Sacred Community. He describes this concept in his book: The Spirituality of Welcoming: How to Transform Your Congregation into a Sacred Community: “The new synagogue we envision is a spiritual center for all those who set foot inside it. It is a kehillah kedoshah, a sacred community, where relationships are paramount, where worship is engaging, where everyone is learning, where repair of the world is a moral imperative, where healing is offered, where personal and institutional transformation are embraced. The times are ripe for this spiritual call.” When I take a step back and look into our own Shaarey Zedek community, I see that we truly embody the concept of kehillah kedoshah. RELATIONSHIPS ARE PARAMOUNT at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. They are the very fiber that holds our community together. They are built and nurtured here, each and every day. This bonding happens with the Minyanaires that meet twice a day, some to recite the Kaddish and others to find camaraderie either in the heartfelt chanting during the service or around the table at the complimentary “breakfast club”. I see the loving parents and grandparents that meet every week to watch their toddlers discover the synagogue through creative play and songs. I hear the laughter of the artisans that gather to weave incredible Talleisim and I see the students that pour into the building Sunday mornings and weeknights to learn and to share Jewish wisdom and teachings with our clergy and educational course leaders. Young adults are coming out to learn and connect with Judaism and each other. The dynamic group that started a few short months ago with 12 motivated individuals has blossomed into a supportive community where diversity is celebrated. The WORSHIP IS ENGAGING if one judges by the number of people on any given Shabbat morning consistently overflowing the chapel into the main sanctuary. The supportive and overwhelming attendance at the Rabbis’
Installation Shabbat was a testament to the engaging and inspirational prayer services that have become the signature of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. There are LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE from the Babies and Buddies, to the B’nai Mitzvah Classes and more recently through the Adult Learning Program. The courses are offered throughout the week, mornings, lunch hour and evenings, catering to a variety of demographic groups including women, new couples, parents of adolescents and young adults. Learning is happening within the synagogue building and at off-site locations like Schmoozers and private homes and offices. If you need some help deciding which class might be for you, give me a call and we will find the right fit and scholarship if need be. I am also looking for volunteers in each course to carpool. This will enable those who do not have transportation, to partake in community. Reaching out to each other is just one way our synagogue community is STRIVING TO REPAIR THE WORLD or Tikun Olam as we say in Hebrew. We can be proud of all of the Tikun Olam projects our synagogue has undertaken from our involvement in Operation Ezra through to our work with Winnipeg Harvest and JCFS. Repairing the world and OFFERING HEALING take place every day as compassionate clergy and staff assist families with loss and grief and provide counselling and coping mechanisms for life’s challenges. Some of our new course offerings include strategies for surviving and thriving in today’s fast paced world, based on ancient Jewish wisdom. Finally, Shaarey Zedek embraces PERSONAL AND INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION as we move forward on a path to engage our members and the community in relevant pertinent activities that offer opportunities for personal growth and connection. SISTERHOOD PAST PRESIDENT I’m writing this column just after Remembrance Day. A day when we all reflect on the memories of the men and women who fought and many who lost their lives so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today. Shaarey Zedek continues to support the, General Monash (Jewish) Legion for the past 35 years! The service was moving and I was most moved by the grade 6 class from Gray Academy. These young boys and girls really had studied and understood the sacrifices made by too many young men and women in too many wars. May their memories be a blessing to us all! After the service was over Sisterhood was honoured to sponsor the reception for the 150 people who attended. Sisterhood’s annual dues are still $36. From this amount we pay a per capita to Women’s League for Conservative Judaism in support of the international organization of which we have been proud members for almost 90 years! We did not want to raise the base amount, we want to be affordable to all, but with costs rising and since Sisterhood does not fundraise, if you wish to donate more than the required $36 to help defray costs and assist with supporting Sisterhood and the events we support at Shaarey Zedek, Simkin Centre, Willow Place etc. we thank you for every additional dollar!! In December every year around Chanukah Sisterhood sponsors the entertainment and refreshments at Simkin Centre. Our Mitzvah Group honours our seniors at Chanukah and again at a Mother’s Day Tea. We supply the manpower to serve our guests dainties we have purchased and cover any costs incurred for entertainment. If you are able to assist please contact Rochelle Pincovich, Mitzvah Group chair through the Shaarey Zedek office, or email sisterhood at sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca. The synagogue has a very successful Chanukah Family Event and Purim Carnival every year. Did you know that Sisterhood contributes monetarily to these events, besides volunteering
and working at the events? If you’ve ever attended you’ve seen how much fun the children and their families have! Pamela Brooker and Alice Weissmann are hard at work organizing Sisterhood Shabbat. If you have not been contacted, and would like to participate in English, Hebrew or even a non-speaking role, please call the SZ office or email sisterhood and we will call you back. This service, completely lead by women, who are all members of Sisterhood, will take place on February 17, 2018. Watch for the next Sisterhood column and advertising for information for other upcoming events, the Torah Fund’s famous Tealess Tea and the 56th Annual Interfaith Luncheon on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 featuring Tom Denton. We are always in need of volunteers to make these events happen, so if you are interested, contact us at the office or via email, we’d be thrilled to have you! Sisterhood’s work is evident in so much of what is done at Shaarey Zedek and beyond. We can’t do this work unless we have members. Members who pay dues, support Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and support Shaarey Zedek. Are you a member? To pay your dues/join, you can come into the synagogue office and pick up a membership form. Ongoing, year round, the Gift Shop is always there to provide your needs. We try to cover all necessities, but if you have any ideas or requests please let us know. Use Front Entrance Crossways in Common Church Preparation/Setup: 11 AM - 1 PM Serving and Singing: 1-3 PM Every year, Shaarey Zedek helps to provide a hot lunch to 150-200 people at the West Broadway Community Ministry. Our volunteers prepare the space, heat the food, serve the meals, and clean up as well. We also give children and adults new toys and holiday gifts. Our hope is that every individual there feels a lot of love and warmth on Christmas Day.
Please drop Gift Donations off in the bin by the information table.
Gifts for adults as well as children are welcome. Suggested gifts include lego/ duplo, puzzles, cozy blankets, nice soaps and toiletry items, fidget spinners and other life perks that those in need may not otherwise be able to afford.
