hey marched. They shouted. They cried. They remembered. Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was observed Nov. 20 in Wilton Manors. About 80 people gathered at The Pride Center at Equality Park and marched up Dixie to Five Points then down Wilton Drive to Wilton Collective. As they walked, they carried candles and pictures of trans people who have been murdered, simply for living their own truth. Some people knew the person in the photo. Others carried the picture of a stranger, making their spirit a part of the evening. “We need to stop the violence that’s going on against transgender women,” First Lady Kendra told SFGN. “People feel that just because we live our life the way we live, it’s okay to kill us. There’s much hate preached about us.” Twenty twenty-one has seen a spike in violence against the trans community. There have been nearly twice as many murders of trans people compared to 2020, and a big increase in other violent crimes. The most moving part of the night was when each murdered person’s name was read aloud, each one feeling like a punch to the gut. Once they arrived at Wilton Collective, people placed flowers in front of the mural that reads “Black Trans Lives Matter.” About a dozen speakers talked about the fear they live in as trans people, violence they’ve survived, and discrimination they’ve endured. Kendra says she can’t even get respect for decent housing. “Code enforcement refused to come to my house and do an inspection. I had bugs

which caused me to be hospitalized.” Julian Cavazos owns Wilton Collective, which develops LGBTQ+ youth by teaching them business skills through working at the store. Several trans youth work there and he was thrilled to be a part of the night and be a positive experience for them. “What a great place for this march to end at, where there’s a whole new generation of trans youth working. It’s a solemn event but in that we also get to look at the great trans youth that are working here.” Former Wilton Manors City Commissioner Julie Carson has been a trans advocate for years and is glad to see this event continue to grow. “This was always a very important event to bring our city staff into the fold so they would understand the importance of this event, remembering the names of people

who’ve been lost to violence.” She says bringing attention to trans rights, even to a city as progressive as Wilton Manors, has been an uphill battle. “I was the first city commissioner to advocate for inclusive healthcare that includes gender confirmation surgery. The commission voted no, no, no, no, and no. It took me three years to get everyone on board.” In addition to physical attacks, the trans community continues to be subjected to legislative attacks around the country. Bills target restroom use and access to play high school sports. Tatiana Williams of Transinclusive Group says they are getting ready to fight for trans rights when Florida’s legislative session starts early next year. “I’ll be in Tallahassee this year and hopefully we’ll be impactful.”

oosen up your hips and swing for the fences, because the Hurricane Showdown Softball Tournament is stepping up to the plate this weekend. The annual event Friday, Nov. 26 - Nov. 28 and will feature 1,400 athletes from around the country celebrating community and competition. “To see the camaraderie and competition throughout all the divisions is like no other,” Jarvis McCray told SFGN. “I have been fortunate to meet so many amazing individuals throughout NAGAAA [North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance] and the member cities.” The event is hosted by the SFAAA (South Florida Amateur Athletic Alliance), and McCray is in charge of pulling it off. “Our Tournament Director Chris Aleman and volunteers have been instrumental in the organization of this tournament. The planning of this annual tournament takes place close to a year in advance to ensure we exceed the expectations of teams, fans and players than the previous year.” The tournament is going down at three

area recreational centers: Mills Pond Park from Friday through Sunday with free admission all weekend, and at Brian Piccolo and Tradewinds Parks Saturday and Sunday, with $1.50 admission fees. Refreshments will be at all three parks and no pets are allowed. Softball is huge in the South Florida LGBT community, and 18 local teams are in the tournament. Jarvis says the organization is a benefit for everyone. “Softball and the SFAAA have been instrumental to me. I joined SFAAA back in Fall of 2008 and have served as a board of director since Spring of 2010. It truly is more than a game for me but giving back to the community and being the proud commissioner of this league has been so rewarding and I am truly humbled to lead this amazing organization.” If you’re anywhere along Wilton Drive during a softball weekend, you’ve likely seen teams in their uniforms having post-game gettogethers. This weekend will be no different. Hamburger Mary’s is hosting Thursday and Saturday after parties. The Village Pub hosts Friday and Lit Bar is Sunday.

SOFTBALL IS HUGE IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA LGBT COMMUNITY, AND 18 LOCAL TEAMS ARE IN THE TOURNAMENT.

Have you Kim?

Asked

Kim Ali, guru of information at John Knox Village (JKV), is frequently asked important questions regarding resort-style living at JKV and the new Westlake addition. That’s why we started this friendly column to help you make the right informed decision. Dear Kim: How are the Holidays celebrated at John Knox Village? — Holiday Lover in Hallandale Dear Holiday Lover: First, I am proud and delighted to say the residents and staff of John Knox Village fully embrace all faiths and we enjoy celebrations around those faiths, as well as respecting those with opposing views on spirituality. Secondly, I think it would best to let our residents answer this. Here, Cassels Tower apartment residents Dave and Jackie Bayer provide their holiday perspective. “On November 1, JKV increased attendance capacities in our meeting and gathering spaces. So, with the past as prologue, just about every activity that one might wish to do will be available here at JKV. One key difference is that things are so readily available and easy to access on campus. Another big difference is the tasteful and extensive holiday lighting around our beautiful campus. Over 75 of our beautiful trees are wrapped with warm white strings of lights, but we do so much more. The Village truly becomes a festive tropical winter wonderland full of holiday cheer.

things here in our friendly Village were festive indeed... parties galore. Some involved the entire campus, while others were more limited to individual areas or buildings. We had quite a few musical events. Some featured our resident vocal groups and bell ringers, while others came from off-campus. Many of the celebrations are of course inspired by Christmas and Hanukkah. Our New Year’s Eve celebrations are always sold out. “There is much to like about JKV all year long, but the holiday season is especially engaging. The 70-acre campus is nicely laid out, tastefully landscaped, and well maintained. The residents and staff are friendly and genuinely care about one another. Our JKV residents are generous in donating to worthy causes and very inclusive in welcoming and supporting the opinions and needs of others. Not surprisingly, these desirable traits all seem to get amplified during the holidays.” Dave and Jackie Bayer Residents

s Transgender Awareness Week comes to a close, the week of celebration, recognition and advocacy ends with Transgender Day of Awareness on Nov. 20.

The solemn day is a time for the community to recognize the deaths of transgender and gender non-conforming people — in recent years, murders of people in the community has escalated at an alarming rate. In their memory, we looked back at these murders in Florida since 2015 and tracked down the latest on each case.

names for this story. HRC has tracked at least 47 deaths this year. In 2020, HRC tracked 44 for the year.

Twelve of these 23 murders are still open.

Often, news reports, police and even family and friends will misgender and dead-name transgender and gender non-conforming people. We will be using pronouns and names that the HRC shares in its reports.

The Human Rights Campaign keeps an up-to-date list of trans murders around the country. This is where we got most of the

The most recent death was Angel Naira, a 36-year-old Black transgender woman who was found fatally shot at her home in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania on Nov. 11.

Clarke, 25, was found dead with bullet wounds to the back of her head and upper arm; according to the Tampa Bay Times. Assistant State Attorney Ronald Gale called the killing “execution style” and said that there was evidence of a struggle. Keith Gaillard, then 18, was arrested for the murder and after five years in the court system, he was acquitted in 2020 as lawyers said there wasn’t enough proof that he killed Clarke. A condom with his DNA was found in the back of her car, he had scratches on his neck after the incident, and friends said he carried the same type of weapon used to kill her.

KILLED JULY 19, 2018

The South Carolina native, 24, was shot to death at a Jacksonville hotel, according to WLXT. Her mother told the media that her daughter loved traveling, which was why she was in Florida at the time. She also described Christina James as a bold personality who was always at the center of attention. Being the third trans woman killed in Jacksonville in a matter of months, LGBTQ Nation asked the question: does the city have a serial killer? The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office told SFGN that her case is still an active, ongoing investigation.

Originally from Wisconsin, Garden, 27, was found dead in her Orlando apartment. According to Orlando Weekly, her home was a haven for sex workers, as she often handed out condoms, water bottles, and helped with HIV testing. O’Connell’s mother told the media that she believed Washtock was killed because of their investigation. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office told SFGN that there are no suspects and no arrests have been made, but the investigation is still open.

Fantroy, 21, was shot and killed in south MiamiDade County after turning down a proposition for sex, according to NBC 6. Then, as Local 10 reports,17-year-old William Watson opened fire on the group Fantroy was walking with, then chased after her and shot her to death. He was arrested on another charge, then confessed to the murder. He was charged as an adult for second-degree murder.

Slater, 23, was found burned “beyond recognition” in a car in Clewiston; her best friend told WINK News he believed that Slater was killed because of her gender identity. Although CBS News reported that the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office had a person of interest, a year later, the outcome appeared more vague with the FBI putting up a $5,000 reward for information on the case, an amount matched by the sheriff’s office. WPTV reported that police have interviewed hundreds of people and executed 40 search warrants on the case; the investigation is still open.

few months ago we asked our readers to vote for their favorite restaurants, people, hangouts, and charities — from your favorite burgers and desserts to the Best Guesthouse, Business and Realtor. We received more than 9,000 votes in more than 100 categories. First you nominated your favorites in each category. The readers chose the Top 3 nominees in each category while the other two nominees were chosen by the staff. Each year we divide the contest up by county, giving our readers in Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade, and Key West a chance to vote for their local favorites and to showcase LGBT friendly establishments outside of Broward County and the Wilton Manors area. As with Asian fare, there is no shortage of restaurants featuring Italian cuisine from simple sandwich shops to fine dining. Located right in the middle cost-wise is the local landmark, Bona Italian. Since it was taken over by Mark Byrd and Glen Weinzimer in 2016, it has quickly found a spot in our hearts and a home on the Drive. As devoted to the community as it is to them, Glen and Mark host many events that give back to the community including Give-Back Mondays where 10% of each check is donated to a different not-for-profit each week. Although it’s been open since the 1970s, it now has a new focus and drive. Bona, a triple threat, also managed to score for Best Take-Out Food and Best Pizza. “We are so excited and truly grateful to the community that chose us as the best of for 2021 in three categories. The pandemic and the past two years of challenges in the restaurant industry have made it difficult for most restaurants to survive,” Weinzimer said. “We know we are still on the drive with our doors open because this community went out of its way to support us with deliveries, pick-ups and dining outside even in the summer! That’s love and this is the topping on the cake. We all have an obligation to support the services and organizations in our community. If we work together we can all stand strong.”

This contest was almost a foregone conclusion as Tulio’s Tacos and Tequila has been a hit since it batted it out of the park on opening day. And it’s only gotten better since then. The friendly, saucy servers wear pants so tight you can almost read their… hips. That only adds to the charm, as does the large sidewalk café. The people-watching is good, but not as good as the cuisine, which focuses on its namesake food and drink. Not only did Tulio’s Tacos and Tequila take the prize for the Best New Restaurant, but it managed to knock La Bamba off the perch to win Best Mexican restaurant. It also won the coveted “Best Menu Item” for its Lobster Tulio. The dish features chilled lobster, corn salsa, diced avocado, and microgreens topped with Tulio’s remoulade sauce and served in a flour tortilla. The expansive array of tequila, Mexican beer, and sodas is the perfect accompaniment to the tasty fare.

“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” Wilton Creamery makes it a triple scoop with its third win in a row. The small-batch specialty shop has been a favorite since it opened in the community. The beautiful loft space offers two levels inside. The decor has an industrial-meets-50’s vibe. “We are the highest rated Ice Cream shop in Florida on Yelp, Google and Trip Advisor,” said D.J. Colby, Managing Partner Wilton Creamery. All of the ice creams, gelato and sorbet are chef curated, with seasonal and rotating flavors of ice cream. There are dairy-free, sugar-free, vegan and even dog-friendly options. Their most popular flavor is “He’s Not Worth It…,” a vanilla and English Toffee Ice Cream with Oreos, crushed Heath Bar, chopped soft caramels and a sea salt caramel swirl. Coming up in December is Cherries Armagnac, Colby’s favorite, a triple vanilla sweet cream ice cream with dried sour cherries rehydrated in Armagnac. Don’t forget to check out their weekly wide small batch artisanal offerings – available every day after 5 p.m. “They may not be something you are interested in eating an entire scoop of, but certainly worth trying for the experience,” Colby said. They only make 2.5 gallons of each so “once we are out, we are out. They only last a few days.” Since opening they’ve made over 600 flavors. Additionally they make two limited large batches each month. Current flavors include Maple Walnut and Pandan Latte. RUNNER-UP: DOLCE - RK

Well, at least you won’t have to travel far to check out the winners of the Best Restaurant category. The winner (for the 8th year in a row) is Rosie’s. Marking the entry to Wilton Drive, just south of Five-Points, these restaurants share a lot of the same qualities, good food at reasonable prices and friendly servers. What puts Rosie’s over the top is its extensive outdoor facility and raucous atmosphere. The lush garden blocks out the view of any nearby streets and traffic and the colorful umbrellas can easily trick you into thinking you’re dining on the beach. Rosie’s also took the prize for Best Hamburger for the 8th year in a row. Probably America’s favorite meal, there’s nothing better than a good, juicy burger. You know, the 12-napkin kind, where the juices just run down your arm, and you have to unhinge your jaw to get that first bite. With its dozens, if not nearly 100, options (all burgers can be made with regular ground beef, ground turkey, a plantbased burger, or a chicken breast) Rosie’s has

Like most businesses though, they faced challenges last year due to shutdowns and restrictions. But unlike some places, they were able to remain open, which allowed them to keep all of their staff employed. “We offer so much more than a coffee shop, including homemade cakes, pies, pastries and cookies; soups, salads and sandwiches, full breakfast menu, breakfast sandwiches pastries; delicious prepared foods, and professional catering,” said Pasquale Rizzo, catering manager. BEST BAR FOR BEARS/ BEST BAR FOR LEATHER THE EAGLE

2209 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors EagleBarWM.com Wilton Manor’s Eagle describes itself as “a classic leather bar in Wilton Manors in an underground, Berlin inspired setting.” It opened two years ago at 2209 Wilton Drive, a storied location that once housed some of our community’s most famous restaurants, pubs, and clubs. Since then, the Eagle has battled COVID to become one of the Drive’s most popular venues. SFGN readers acknowledged its appeal by naming it the Best in two categories: Best Bar for Bears and Best Bar for Leather. “We’re SUPER thrilled and thankful that your readers have chosen the Eagle as the Best Bar for Leather and Bears,” said Chuck King, general manager of the Eagle. “We have been working hard to bring the best entertainment, events and parties that are geared towards the Leather and Bear Communities, as well as put together a world class Dance Floor with incredible DJs, technology and sound. Dick’s Service Station has won Best Hair Salon for the fifth time. Like most barbershops, they offer haircuts and beard trims, eyebrow waxing, and even beard coloring services. But what makes it so different from other barbershops is that they’re LGBT-friendly. “We’re super proud of that. We couldn’t do it to the guys that work here,” said coowner Christian Santiago. “What stands out is the quality of our services and the expertise of our guys. We have an amazing shop. It’s a unique shop, modeled after a 1950s gas station.” Their haircuts are $14.99 making them affordable for those customers who want to come in weekly. “Many customers come every week,” he said. Santiago and his husband Eric McKnight started the business in 2016.

This year Santiago wanted to pay tribute to Bob Neu, one of their stylists who died in August. “We really want to recognize Bob,” Santiago said. Santiago and McKnight previously told SFGN that Neu was a master barber and had a big, loyal following. BEARS OF SOUTH FLORIDA

SAFE “T” TRANS/GENDER NONCONFORMING GROUP AT SUNSERVE Social support groups are essential to help trans people cope with harassment and rejection and the ups and downs of everyday life. SunServe’s Safe T program meets every Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m. at SunServe’s Wilton Manors Campus. Attendance is limited to transgender and gender-queer people only. “It is imperative for marginalized communities to know that they are not alone in their struggles,” said Misty Eyez, director of Women’s Services, Transgender Services and Training Education at SunServe. “If you are on the transgender spectrum, you may not feel like you belong in your family or even in society. However, you fit in at Safe T.

TIME WINNER!

Coffee & Conversation & Alcoholics Anonymous The best group for seniors is stuck in virtual reality. With COVID-19 guidelines still in place, Pride Center’s Coffee & Conversation remains frozen in cyberspace. “I am thrilled that C&C was once again voted as best group for seniors but am missing our many good times together,” said Bruce Williams, Pride Center Active Aging Manager. “Let’s hope that in the near future we will once again be able to reunite in person so that we can enjoy one another’s company.”

Pre-pandemic, seniors filled the Pride Center to the brim on Tuesday mornings. There was coffee and snacks to be had as friends mingled to discuss their pleasures and pains. The program typically featured a guest speaker offering information about vital services. As they sang in the theme song from “All In The Family”... Those Were the Days. RUNNER-UP: SAGE – JMCD

TIME WINNER!

Misty Eyez is a passionate activist and advocate for the trans community. At SunServe, she’s the director of the Women’s Program, Transgender Services, and the Manager of LGBTQ+ Competency Training. Her work is more of a calling than a job. “When you’re an advocate, your responsibility is to be the voice of communities that don’t have the courage to stand up for themselves and the wherewithal to stand up for themselves,” Eyez said. “Often, marginalized communities feel they deserve their oppression. And that’s where activists and advocates come into play, to help fight for the communities that just need a little help.” In the last year, Eyez graduated on the Dean’s List with a Bachelor’s Degree in Supervision and Management; she is currently enrolled in FAU’s Executive MBA Program. She remains humble about this year’s acknowledgment. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the community that I love, support, and belong to,” she said. “We don’t do this for recognition. For the third time in a row, Darren Thompson at Dick’s Service Station has won Best Hair Stylist of the year. He’s been cutting hair since 1998 and lived in Fort Lauderdale since 2012. He’s been working at Dick’s since it opened in 2016. “I am really glad to have won this again. I keep winning. Because of this I am becoming a better barber and better in the community,” Thompson said. “I’d like to dedicate my third win to the loss of my co-worker Bob. I am grateful that Dick’s was there for him in his final years of work. He was in a bad place before becoming a barber. I will miss him very much.” As for what makes Thompson a great barber? “Half of my job is executing. The other half is listening. It’s like therapy behind the chair,” he said. “I celebrate a lot with people. I find out what’s going on with the community. I’m very good at what I do.” The pandemic was hard on Thompson but there was a blessing in disguise. “Suddenly I couldn’t touch people. I always thought my job was recession proof,” he said. “I did a lot of painting.” He explored his creative side so much so during the last year a local art gallery, 9Muses Art Center, will be displaying his work. Terry Dyer has won Best New LGBT Activist this year. Dyer has a passion for helping others for over 15 years working in both profit and nonprofits, according to his bio. He wrote a book in 2020 titled “Letters to a GAY BLACK BOY,” a memoir structured in the form of letters to his younger self. “I had a choice to make,” Dyer said. “While COVID was a horribly bad thing, the shutdown ultimately gave me the opportunity to finish the book.”

Apt. 9F

As an activist, he has advocated for a number of gender and HIV/AIDS issues. He is also a classical singer and works on stage and at cabaret performances via live streaming on the internet. Dyer is also the director of the Development-Administrative and Executive Department for SunServe.

For the first time ever, Ali at Apt. 9F has won Best Server (Gal). “Wow. Awesome for Allie, she is amazing!” said Carol Moran, owner of Apt. 9F. Apt. 9F, a cocktail bar in Wilton Manors, describes itself as “an unpretentious place for inventive drinks, a good glass of wine, some delicious nibbles, and most importantly love, laughter, and good juju.”

Always modest, Charlie is “grateful and humbled by the honor SFGN readers, AlibiMonkey Bar guests and the Wilton Manors community have bestowed upon me. A year later, Commissioner Caputo is Broward’s Best in two categories: Best Local LGBT Activist (for the second year in a row) and Best Wilton Manors City Commissioner. In this dual role Caputo serves two constituencies: his LGBT community and the people who live in his hometown. Here, as in other matters, Caputo has performed admirably. “I wake up every single day incredibly grateful for the job I’ve been elected to do,” Caputo said. “Being involved in and connected to our community is such an incredible source of happiness for me. Being city commissioner has provided me with a platform to advocate for issues that matter to our community. Whether my advocacy came in the form of an official city resolution, serving on the boards like the Chamber of Commerce and WMBA, or even something more lighthearted like my regular cameo appearances in Ronnie Larsen’s ‘Sauna’ show, I try to say YES to every opportunity to make an impact in this city I love.”

FOR MANY PEOPLE, IT COULD BE HARD TO KEEP UP WITH SUCH A HECTIC SCHEDULE, BUT NOT FOR MISS DEADPETALS.

She works hard for the money. Donna Summer sang it and Daisy Deadpetals lives it. Her weekly performing schedule is almost impossible to follow. On Wednesdays, she hosts dirty bingo at Tats and Tacos in Oakland Park. “It’s a hoot and holler,” she said. She does another bingo on Thursdays at Lit Bar WM. “It’s a great time too. We give away naughty prizes.” Friday, she’s at Hullabaloo in West Palm Beach for cabaret shows at 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. “A girl’s gotta eat,” she quips. Saturday she’s at Lips, and Sunday, she starts the day by hosting brunch at Holy Mackerel. Then she finishes the day at the Eagle Wilton Manors. For many people, it could be hard to keep up with such a hectic schedule, but not for Miss Deadpetals. “I have an old lady calendar that’s paper,” she said. “I write everything down and I’m kind of anal about it, so I know what the hell I’m doing.” Amid all of that performing, there’s still time for some writing for Helix. Regular SFGN readers know that Daisy Deadpetals is a repeat winner on this list in both categories. “I think like the older I get the more I realize this is amazing coming from the community that I love and am privileged to be a part of,” she said. “It means that the thing that I’ve dedicated my life to for the past 27 years means something. The park has a mix of “Old Florida” homes and traditional houses, a Holiday Park, and is near Flagler Village. “One of my favorite places to sit and think or do some pilates and yoga,” a reviewer wrote. HIV care was impacted in many areas during the pandemic, but that was not an option for Latino Salud. Not only did its doors stay open, but Latino Salud was also able to expand its services. “HIV didn’t go into lockdown, so we felt strongly that we needed to find a way to stay safely open for service,” said Stephen Fallon, Latinos Salud’s cofounding executive director. “Because we were the only agency in South Florida to remain entirely open for walk-in and appointment-based HIV testing and STD screening, 20% more community members came to us for services in 2020, and that trend has only continued, increasing by another 20% this year.” Online reviews rave about the friendly, caring environment at Latino Salud. “Taking care of your sexual health can be intimidating,” Fallon said. “We want to put you at ease, so you’ll always feel safe and secure here.” Latino Salud focuses its promotion efforts on the Latino community because HIV rates have been rising among gay Latinos faster than any other group in South Florida. But you don’t have to speak Spanish or be Latino to access its free services. “Our hearts are full, knowing that SFGN’s readers recognized the efforts

Rolando Chang Barrero has done a lot for Palm Beach County, so perhaps that’s why readers voted him as the Best LGBT Activist, Best Artist, and his art gallery in West Palm Beach won for Best Art Gallery. Executive Director of Compass, Julie Seaver won this category so many times we decided to rename it LGBT Activist (NOT Named Julie Seaver), with her blessing! Chang Barrero created the Pajaro Pride Wall Project, an auction that has over 100 artists, friends, allies, and community leaders creating art to sell. “ I’m very honored to be included on this list among so many friends and associates,” Chang Barrero said. “It’s a great honor to be recognized by our community and I am very grateful. I’m very happy to be able to continue to serve my community.” He has been creating art for over 40 years, according to his bio. He is a multimedia artist with a portfolio including fashion design, film, painting, acting, and more. His activism and his art are often intertwined, which is why the exhibits that his art gallery hosts feature topics that range from human rights to personal identity. Thomas said. “I’m gonna start letting these songs loose as 2022 begins.” Thomas said Miami’s live music scene is coming back to life “in the most artistic and graceful way,” and that “multitalented curator” David Sexton has led the charge. Alongside his musical partner and boyfriend, Oscar Quesada, he is gearing up for a free live performance of his latest creation — “Butterfly Parade” — on March 17, 2022, at the North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach. In his signature self-deprecating humor he exclaims, “It’s St. Patrick’s Day with a real elf!” The album is sensual, colorful and lush – the way many of his fans would describe the Tori Amos-inspired Thomas himself. With LGBT fans in Miami and across the country, the activist-minded Thomas said he’s grateful for SFGN readers voting him tops this year. “Your sexuality or gender can never be spiritually compromised by any systems or dogmas. TIME WINNER!

Fort Zachary Beach. Credit: Cristo Vlahos, via Wikipedia.

Located three hours south of Miami, Fort Zachary is a must stop for any Keys trip. Built in 1845, this 54-acre historical landmark in the Florida Keys once served as a military fortress, but today hosts plenty of activities for every kind of sun seeker. The grounds of the fort are open to explore daily from 8 a.m. to sunset daily with wooded nature trails and bike paths. Grab a bite to eat at the Cayo Huesco Café or hike down to the Jetty with your fishing pole to catch your own lunch! Snorkel right off the white sand beach in a one-of-a-kind underwater marine habitat or relax in Chickee huts and hammocks by the spectacular turquoise waters. No trip to Fort Zachary would be complete without a shore side stroll against the back drop of its iconic sunsets where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico.

The voters have spoken: Key West’s Best Bar goes to Aqua, which has won five times in a year now. Perhaps one of the reasons it’s so popular is that it offers daily drag shows for its customers, claiming to be “The best Drag Show in Key West.” “The Drag Show is unmatched in the talent, setting and performances. Located right on Duval Street, our customers are treated to the true Key West experience from start to finish,” said Jenn Stefanacci, a spokesperson for Aqua. “Aquaplex is Key West’s only theme park for adults.” A reviewer wrote on their Facebook page, “First time patrons and boy did this place not disappoint! Everyone was amazing, so nice, and all-around good company. From the time we walked in the door to the time we left, the entire feel was so welcoming. We had a great time and can’t wait to go back!”

CONVICTIONS Publisher's Editorial

THANKSGIVING RUMINATIONS Bronco Riding from Chemo Country Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

O

n this Thanksgiving, I want to thank you, the SFGN readers and advertisers. Between publishing the Pride of Fort Lauderdale book last week and our own issue, the paper was the biggest since the beginning of the Pandemic. This week we are publishing one of our largest “Best Of” issues ever, a credit to our sales team and your faith in SFGN. It remains an honor and a privilege to illuminate the loves and the lives of our community, sometimes, painfully, the losses. There have been too many of those these past two years. Today’s issue again celebrates “the best of,” awards and honors won by your votes. No recount necessary. One person or business may get the most votes, but we all win when we are participants in the process; players in the game we call life. A lyricist named Ashleigh Brilliant wrote in one of his books, “It is very inconvenient being mortal. You never know when everything might suddenly end.” He is right. Do what Rudyard Kipling said, ‘Give the unforgiving minute sixty seconds worth of distance run.” Be thankful not just for Thanksgiving, but for being players in the game, runners in the race. You win when you don’t whine. Find the guy complaining about the way the ball bounces, and he usually loses the game. I like what Albert Einstein said about Life, “I can’t tell you if there’s anything after this life but I can give you a tip. Live as if there is not; as if this is your only chance to enjoy, to love, to exist. So, if there’s nothing after, then you will have enjoyed the opportunity.” Don’t worry about winning every game. Sometimes you learn more by losing. Scars just remind us of where we have been. We can’t let them stop us from where we are going.

Spending a lot of time watching movies lately. Touched I was, by the last words of the recent James Bond film, No Time to Die: “Don’t live your days to just prolong them. Live them to use them.” Only in the darkness can you find the stars. There is hope in that night. Add the light of friends, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a good book, a dog by your side, and it’s all you need. Thank you for allowing SFGN and the Mirror Magazine to showcase your lives these past eleven years. This Thanksgiving, share those features with your family and friends. Make your lives and their lives a partnership you can be proud of. Show them you did it, despite what they thought — especially that older brother who never believed in you! Things, like people, don’t last forever, but as long as they last, make them last good. Learn to laugh at yourself and love others, and things last longer. Sooner or later, everyone rides a bronco. Enjoy the bounce. It’s just a rough patch on a wonderful ride.

Local comedian Peter Bisuito is bringing his show “Vent & Chester” to the Center for Spiritual Living in Oakland Park, Nov. 27 – Dec. 11. The play got its start four years ago as a promising television sitcom. Bisuito spent two years saving money to rent a professional television studio to film the pilot, which racked up more than 50,000 views in less than two months. Even though the show was voted fan favorite at the Palm Springs LGBT film festival, a high school friend who had become an executive with Amazon Studios told Bisuito the project was “too limited” for the streaming video service to pick it up. Undeterred, Bisuito quickly remembered a quote from an Oprah Winfrey interview: “Sometimes failure is the universe guiding you in a different direction.” Taking Winfrey’s words to heart, Bisuito spent six months rewriting the script into a two-act play that received rave reviews at table readings. Chester Bateman, played by Larry Buzzeo, is a newly out and recently divorced psychology professor who was dumped, defrauded and stripped of his life savings by his first boyfriend. Now, in need of a roommate, Chester invites Vent, an out and proud, free-spirited bartender played by Bisuito, to move into his home. “In this youth-driven society, I have created a product that not only celebrates gay men, but middle-aged gay men. It’s been long overdue,” explained Bisuito in an announcement. Tickets start at $25 at VentAndChester.com.

T

he Hallmark Channel and Lifetime may have kicked off their famous Christmas movie marathons weeks ago, but for many South Florida residents, the holiday season is just getting into full swing this week. Here are some of SFGN’s picks for some festive cheer:

“THANKS TO DRAG” Your favorite local drag queens are coming together on Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. at the Manor, 2345 Wilton Dr. in Wilton Manors, for “Thanks to Drag,” a benefit performance to raise funds for community organizations, including SunServe, Renand Foundation and Chainless Change. Performers include Velvet Lenore, Starlett Skye, Joe Posa as Joan Rivers and Wilton Manors Commissioner Chris Caputo, as well as local cabaret icons Jennifer McClain and Antonio Edwards. The event will be hosted by SunServe Development Director Terry Dyer and local “dragaret” artist Miss Bouvèé. Tickets start at $25 at Sunserve.org/Drag.

WATER TAXI CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TOURS After the sun sets, hop on board the Water Taxi to enjoy the beautifully decorated homes along the New River and Intracoastal Waterway. The Water Taxi is more than just a boat ride. The captains and crew are well-versed on the history of the city and the many attractions that can be viewed from the water. Enjoy a refreshing drink, fun narrations and, yes, the beautiful light displays in the backyards of Fort Lauderdale’s rich and famous residents. Holiday lights cruises, nightly 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. beginning Dec. 2, depart from the Water Taxi stop between Stranahan House and Riverside Hotel, 335 SE 6th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $35 at WaterTaxi.com.

All of your favorite characters will be there — Marie, the Nutcracker prince, Mouse King and Sugarplum Fairy — dancing live on stage to Tchaikovsky’s famous score. For showtimes and tickets, go to MiamiCityBallet.org.

VISIT SANTA IN HIALEAH

The location may have changed, but this Miami-Dade County tradition is back through Jan. 2 with more than 100 rides, live performances and attractions. Hop on the Santa Swing and Sky High Ferris Wheel or catch a ride on the “Merry” Go Round and Circus Train. Nightly performances include Cirque Equinox, Zuzu Acrobats and Freestyle FMX Motorcycle Show. And don’t forget to take in Mistletoe Lane, South Florida’s largest Christmas tree, Christmas Light Show Spectacular and photos with Santa, himself. Tickets start at $29.91 at SantasEnchantedForest.com.

The Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade turns 50 this year and it’s looking great for its age. Hunky actor Mario Lopez (“Save by the Bell,” “Extra”) is the grand marshal for the colorful flotilla, which starts on the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. and then makes its way up the Intracoastal Waterway. Watch anywhere along the 12-mile route, the official viewing area will be at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park. Vote for your favorite boat on the Winterfest app and you could win two tickets on Spirit Airlines. For more information, go to WinterfestParade.com.
