John Hayden here is a lot of fear and misinformation around the monkeypox outbreak in Broward County, which is disproportionately affecting the gay and bisexual community. To help get the word out, the Pride Center and Our Fund Foundation hosted a town hall with a panel of experts. Margaret Gorensek, M.D., is an infectious disease specialist at Holy Cross. She was joined by Dr. Frank Vittimberga, the Chief Medical Officer at Florida Medical Center, and AHF’s Dr. Zachary Henry. The focus was making sure people know how it’s spread and how it’s treated. After 2+ years of pandemic, many are comparing it to COVID. Monkeypox is much different. The panel said it’s incredibly difficult and rare for monkeypox to be transmitted by water droplets. The virus is spread through skinon-skin contact, when an infected person has lesions that look like a rash. The doctors said it takes up to three weeks for the rash to appear, and that’s when a patient is contagious. Often, flu-like symptoms accompany the rash. Monkeypox was first seen in Africa in the 1950s and rarely is seen outside that part of the world. Several European countries are seeing their first cases ever with this outbreak. The reason it’s affecting the gay and bisexual

community this time is because it’s been traced back to a MSM (man who has sex with men) who went to Nigeria then attended a circuit party in Spain. So far only about 100 cases have been diagnosed in the U.S., with about 10 in South Florida. All but one have been MSM. There was an outbreak about 20 years ago and that mainly affected the heterosexual population.

Dr. Vittimberga said you should inspect your sexual partner for signs of a rash, including places that aren’t easily visible, like the genital area and rectum. He said the WHO is also finding it in semen, so condoms are recommended. Unlike with COVID, being in large crowds, like at Pride or a concert, isn’t dangerous. But if you’re dancing shirtless next to people or hanging out in dark areas of bars, the risk is much higher. People who have had the smallpox vaccine are immune, but most people under 50 didn’t get the vaccine as children. Unlike with COVID, a person can’t just walk into a clinic and get a shot. There is a vaccine for monkeypox, but there is only enough for about 1,200 patients. “Right now, it’s only for people who have come in contact with a confirmed case,” Dr. Henry said. “It is administered as a means of [prevention] so that person doesn’t end up becoming infected.” The Biden administration has placed a standby order for a million doses if this outbreak gets bigger. While there is still a relatively low number of patients in Broward, one of them was diagnosed by Dr. Henry. He said the patient

thought he had an STI. Dr. Henry, already on alert, recognized the problem immediately. The health department sent over testing kits and the diagnosis was confirmed. The patient, like most people with monkeypox, is expected to recover. About 3% of people with monkeypox die. Most have very mild issues. Patients with extremely compromised immune systems are at the highest risk of complications. People are contagious until all sores have scabbed over and fallen off. The virus can also survive on surfaces outside the body. If you are using public facilities like toilets or gym equipment, it’s recommended to wipe them down before using. The Pride Center’s Kristofer Fegenbush moderated the panel, and said the purpose is to raise awareness in people who may not be paying attention, and he hopes attendees will spread the word. “The event doesn’t produce protection for the community. Education, information, and equipping people with the resources they need. It really is about education and information.”

If you think you have monkeypox, see a doctor immediately. If you have issues getting quick medical care, call (954) 270-8905.

HARRY STYLES TO STAR IN QUEER FILM Amazon dropped the first footage of their fall drama, “My Policeman,” which is about a closeted police officer who sparks a relationship with a museum curator who is facing societal pressure to marry a woman and lead a traditional lifestyle. The cast is made up of Harry Styles, David Dawson, and Emma Corrin. “The whole point of Tom is that he is a character who is confused,” director Michael Grandage told Vanity Fair. “It’s made more problematic by the fact that he’s a policeman, and he’s in a career that is about upholding the law. And the law in the country at the time is about everything he feels — the complexity of it is something that whoever was going to play younger Tom and older Tom needed to somehow understand and absorb.”

The project is based on author Bethan Roberts’ book of the same title, which was released in 2012. Amazon Prime will release the movie on Oct. 21, and it will be available exclusively on the streaming platform Nov. 4.

Model and TikToker Olivia Ponton has come out as bisexual. “I want to announce that I’m bisexual, and I’m now proud to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community,” said Ponton, who was born in Naples, Florida. “I feel like it didn’t really even occur to me until I moved [to Los Angeles] that being bisexual was even a possibility in my brain.” In an interview with Teen Vogue, she opened up about how she met her girlfriend, fellow TikToker Kaila Novak. Ponton shared that she was inspired by JoJo Siwa who came out as pansexual earlier this year. “I saw that and thought ‘Wow, that’s really amazing for young children now because she’s such a big role model. And she’s really become almost a role model for me to look up to as well,” said Ponton. “I want to let young girls know that it’s okay to not even know your sexuality until you’re older.”

NEW EXECUTIVE ORDER HOPES TO PROTECT LGBT COMMUNITY

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that will benefit LGBT people. Since the start of 2022, states have been enacting restrictive laws that would minimize the visibility of the LGBT community and its history. “My message to all the young people: just be you. You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You do belong,” Biden said. “All of us on this stage have your back.” The Hill reports that the new order will have the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) renew guidelines for states to make comprehensive health care more accessible for LGBT people. The order also includes that “inhumane” practices like conversion

CALIFORNIA POSSIBLE ‘PROUD BOYS’ DISRUPTION BREAKS OUT AT DRAG QUEEN STORY HOUR

San Francisco police are currently looking into a possible hate crime that occurred when five men disrupted Drag Queen Story Hour. According to The Guardian, the incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. when the men entered the reading where preschoolers were present. Police believe that this may be the workings of the farright, white supremacist group called “Proud Boys” because they were wear the yellow and black colors. Lt. Ray Kelly with the Alameda county sheriff’s office described the incident as “extremely aggressive with a threatening violent demeanor causing people to fear for their safety.” A week prior, police arrested 31 men in Idaho who had plans to cause a riot at a Pride parade event in the Bay Area.

TOKYO MOVES TO ALLOW SAME-SEX PARTNERSHIPS

ROMANIA CONSIDERS DANGEROUS ANTI-LGBT BILL

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has passed legislation recognizing samesex partnerships, which would expand some privileges now available to married heterosexual couples, but stops short of legalizing same-sex marriages. In the Group of Seven major economies, Japan is the only country that does not recognize same-sex marriages, according to The Washington Post. Taiwan is the first Asian country or territory to do so. Activists praised the move as a positive first step, but said they still had a long way to go before they have the same rights as heterosexual married couples. “I feel that my identity is finally being recognized after 40 years,” said Fumino Sugiyama, a trans activist and co-chair of Tokyo Rainbow Pride.

Romania is debating a dangerous bill that would make it illegal to teach about homosexuality and gender identity in schools. Romanian legislators attempted to prohibit “activities aimed at spreading gender identity theory or opinion” in educational institutions in 2020. The bill was struck down by the Constitutional Court, but politicians are trying again to limit debates about sex and gender, this time focusing on children in schools. The bill has cleared the Senate and is now awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives. According to the Human Rights Watch, LGBT people are not solely portrayed as a threat to children in Romania. Reactionary forces throughout the world, from Guatemala to the United States

BUENOS AIRES BANS USE OF INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE IN SCHOOLS

A massive billboard commemorating Pride Month in Ghana’s capital, Accra, has been taken down. The billboard, which was erected on the highway during the first weekend of June, sparked a lot of discussion in Ghana’s media, with many calling for its removal. According to Africa News, some MPs set the chief of police a 24-hour deadline to remove the billboard, but it is still unclear who took it down. June is a month dedicated to celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer individuals all across the world, but most African nations do not participate. In addition, Ghana’s parliament is contemplating a measure that would subject the LGBT community to heavy

Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, the mayor of Buenos Aires, has outlawed the use of inclusive Spanish in public schools throughout the city. This ban was slammed by a number of proponents of inclusive Spanish, a type of speech that instructors say is widely accepted and practiced, particularly among young people. According to Acuña, the usage of “e” to indicate a non-binary gender will no longer be permitted, nor will the use of “x” or “@” in writing. Despite some adult opposition, inclusive language, which has been promoted by the feminist movement and the LGBT community, is frequently used among adolescents and young people. Its usage is formally recognized at select Argentine institutions, such as

SEA OF PRIDE AT STONEWALL PARADE John Hayden

“A

s far as I’m concerned, it was a 100% success.” That is the view of Jamie Forsythe, one of the main organizers of this year’s Stonewall Pride Parade & Street Festival. He’s not alone. The reviews of the event have been outstanding. Early estimates are that 50,000 people came out for the event, and many expect the final total will be much higher. Usually 35,00040,000 attend, and this year may be the biggest so far. The gates opened around mid-afternoon and the street was filled long after the sun went down. Seven stages, including the first Girls, Latino, and Black Excellence stages, kept the music going and energy up. They stretched from in front of Bubbles & Pearls at the south end of Wilton Drive down to The Manor at the north end. The parade started around 7 p.m., and people were ready. More than 100 groups marched, and it lasted more than two hours. At points, the crowd was at least 15 people deep, and The Drive was so packed that you couldn’t distinguish the parade from the crowd. Happening Out Television Network broadcast the parade live for the first time. Cohost FayWhat?! said the view from the stage was a sight to behold. “It was incredible up there. To see the sea of people was just amazing. All the organizations that fight for us on a daily basis were the one in the parade suiting up and showing up. That was just so heartwarming.” In addition to being the parade reviewing stand, Center Stage also served as the Black Excellence Stage, in recognition of Juneteenth, which was on Sunday and observed on Monday. There was also a Juneteenth flash mob that quickly won over the crowd. This is the first time in three years that the event has been at “full strength.” It was canceled in 2020 due to COVID. Last year the street festival happened but the parade was canceled at the last minute after a fatal accident in the staging area.

PROTECTED AND SERVED Maybe the biggest news is that, from a safety and security perspective, there’s no news. Security costs and concerns dominated discussions in the weeks leading up to the

14

• 6 . 23.2022

event. Planners were hit with larger than expected increases for security only days before the festival. Those costs were coupled with threats to Pride events across the country. West Palm Beach’s Pride On the Block dealt with a credible, last-minute threat. In Idaho, a group of right-wing men were stopped on their way to disrupt an event. Wilton Manors police worked with multiple agencies to staff the event but also monitor ceaseless web traffic and try to pick out credible threats. Wilton Manors Police Chief Gary Blocker told SFGN the efforts paid off. “Our crime analysts worked diligently before and during the event in search of anything of concern, and we are glad to report no threats to our event surfaced.” He also said no arrests were made in or around the festival, saying it’s a it’s a testament to the community’s ability to have fun and stay safe. Wilton Manors City Commissioner Chris Caputo, who has called for a better budgeting process so major increases in costs can be absorbed, was happy as well, posting on social media, “A big heartfelt thanks to the police officers, volunteers and WMEG staff who came together to remind the nation that the City of Wilton Manors doesn’t say — but, instead, screams — gay!” While budgeting for big events like Stonewall Pride isn’t going to get any easier, people close to the event are optimistic that they will continue. Forsythe said it’s onward to next year.

DRIVER DIES IN COLLISION WITH TRAIN ONLY DAYS AFTER OPERATION CROSSING GUARD BEGINS

By Christiana Lilly The Broward Sheriff’s Office made a strong statement June 3: a zero-tolerance policy against motorists and pedestrians who try to beat the train. However, four days after the announcement of Operation Crossing Guard, a woman died after colliding with a Brightline train in Oakland Park. Liesel Hulden, 84, was killed June 7 when she drove onto the train tracks at North Dixie Highway and Cypress Creek Road. According to BSO, the railroad warning signals had already gone off and she stopped on the tracks. “As a Brightline train approached from the south, the train engineer sounded the horn and applied the brakes; however, before the train could stop, the train struck the vehicle and carried the vehicle several hundred feet,” according to a release from the agency.

Photo via GoBrightline, Facebook.

“In almost all cases, people are ignoring and circumventing the warning lights, sounds, safety signs, and crossing gates the odds of beating the train are not in your favor, and the results are just tragic.” - Steve Robson BSO's Col.

Since Brightline kicked off its services in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami in 2018, there have been countless deaths related to pedestrians standing/lying on the train tracks or cars stopping on the tracks. Just a year later, the Associated Press called the Brightline the deadliest rail line in the country. However, the last few months seem to have been particularly deadly in Broward County — and not just for the Brightline. Three pedestrians and one driver were killed in train collisions in Pompano Beach and Oakland Park, involving the Brightline, Tri-

Rail and FEC cargo trains. Thankfully, not all accidents have been fatal. In April, a truck sitting on the tracks in Wilton Manors was hit by the Brightline; there were no injuries. In March, a driver escaped with his life after colliding with the Brightline in Oakland Park. The rash of fatalities led to the creation of Operation Crossing Guard, a partnership among Brightline, BSO and local police departments to combat the train-versuscar collisions. Officers will be handing out tickets ranging from $115 to $205 and the operation will use both overt and covert

officers. “In almost all cases, people are ignoring and circumventing the warning lights, sounds, safety signs, and crossing gates … the odds of beating the train are not in your favor, and the results are just tragic,” BSO Col. Steve Robson, the executive director of the Department and Preparedness and Response, said during a press conference on June 3. The Brightline moves at 79 miles per hour on average. According to a flier from the event, it can take a train more than a mile to come to a complete stop.

involved with many successful campaigns in the past, and has strong ties with area nonprofits. One of Don’s main hurdles will be his strong opinions on support of vacation and shortterm rentals in our residential neighborhoods, something residents need to have more clarity about. Of the three, one would assume that the sure bet for re-election would be Vice Mayor Rolli — pronounced row-lee not rawl-lee, as was made clear at the last city commission meeting. One should not be too self-assured in any election, especially when many residents are showing up for Public Comments mentioning your name in a non-supportive manner, as happened this past week. In an election year, when reaching out to residents for support, perhaps the vice mayor’s choice of response to the many residents who made Public Comments that night should have been more conciliatory rather than what came across as defensive and self-justifying. The hoopla that night was on the Second Reading of an Ordinance mainly worked on by Rolli — that had to do with updating and creating consistency across city advisory boards and committees. One item

was to limit the size of boards, excluding the Planning and Zoning Board, to five members. Many residents spoke up against the need to limit volunteerism and opposed such a move by the city commission. Our city is blessed with many residents looking to volunteer, to take part in their municipal government, to serve their community, and such a move was viewed as unwarranted by the many who had come to speak that night. As the chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board stated — that committee has operated for 66 years with great community support and cutting the members from seven to five would be nothing short of foolishness. One of the main factors stated by Rolli as to why some change in current operations were justified, was that according to city staff the workload to support each advisory board was about 14 weeks of time and labor. To give the vice mayor credit — that is an astounding amount of time spent by city staff supporting each advisory board. If city staff needs 14 weeks of labor to support the Library Advisory Board or the Parks & Recreation Board, then perhaps Rolli should be seeking the improvement of workplace efficiency for city staff rather than a reduction in volunteers looking to serve our city. There is something to think about here. As we move ahead with our first election in 24 years without Resnick on the ballot, we should take a moment to thank Resnick for his many years of service and for his part in making life just better here.

By Sal Torre June 17 was final call to throw your hat in the race for municipal elections here in our Island City. Boyd Corbin has decided to make a run for mayor against the incumbent Scott Newton. In the commissioners’ race for two seats, we have three candidates: incumbent Vice Mayor Paul Rolli along with Don D’Arminio and David Walker, both previously serving on the Planning and Zoning Board. It should be an interesting few months ahead till Election Day in November. The big news coming out of last Friday was the absence of Commissioner Gary Resnick’s filing as he has done in numerous election cycles here in Wilton Manors over the last 24 years. Resnick first filed back in 1998, won a seat on the city commission and went on to also serve as mayor for 10 of those 24 years of service to our city. Over the many years there have been plenty of residents who had much to say about Resnick, including myself in this column. However, Resnick’s many years of service have helped make Wilton Manors the wonderful city we all enjoy today, and now is the time to thank him for his many years of service to our community. Over the last few months of city commission meetings, observing Resnick, I would have placed my bet that Resnick would seek reelection one more time. His strong voice over the past year on vacation rentals plaguing our residential communities along with his advocacy on quality-of-life issues for residents seemed to be topics best used to win one more election. That’s one more bet lost when dealing with election outcomes involving Resnick. You would think I would have learned more over the years. Speaking of bets, one might look to place one on the long shot candidate for city commission: David Walker. His background on environmental issues along with his extensive service on numerous regional boards, and our city’s Planning and Zoning Board, make him a very formidable candidate. It will be interesting to see how this three-way race for two commission seats plays out. The other newcomer to municipal elections is also coming from many years of service on the Planning and Zoning Board, Don D’Arminio. Don is no newcomer to city politics, has been

OPERATION CROSSING GUARD ENDS, MORE THAN 500 CITATIONS GIVEN By Christiana Lilly

Image created with photo via Facebook. The two-week-long Operation Crossing Guard drew to a close on June 17, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office announced that more than 500 tickets were given out. The program was meant to target motorists and pedestrians illegally going around the crossing gate arms, sitting on the tracks, or clocking the intersection. The operation is in response to a rash of fatalities at railroad crossings in Broward County, leading to a partnership among BSO, Florida Highway Patrol, local police departments, and the Brightline train company. They used overt and covert officers and handed out tickets ranging from $115 to $205.

The agencies announced Operation Crossing Guard during a June 3 press conference at the Fort Lauderdale Brightline station.

THE BREAKDOWN OF TICKETS IS AS FOLLOWS: • 157 tickets for stopping on the railroad tracks • 146 for driving through or around closed crossing gate arms • 122 for entering a grade crossing without sufficient space to clear • 90 for blocking an intersection or crosswalk • 25 for walking around closed crossing gate arms “Until we see a reduction in the incidents at the crossing gates, this operation and the enforcement is only going to continue,” said BSO Col. Steve Robson, the executive director of the Department and Preparedness and Response. The agencies announced Operation Crossing Guard during a June 3 press conference at the Fort Lauderdale Brightline station. Unfortunately, four days later, an 84-yearold woman was killed in a collision with the Brightline in Oakland Park. While the operation has ceased, BSO says they will still have “proactive enforcement” at railways to continue cracking down on dangerous driving.

RESIDENT OUTCRY SHIFTS CITY COMMISSION VOTE ON OPERATION OF ADVISORY BOARDS

REMAINS IDENTIFIED AS MISSING SOUTH FLORIDA GIRL; FORMER WILTON MANORS OFFICER SUSPECTED

Gerard Schaefer. By John Hayden

After decades of grief and uncertainty, a family is finally getting the facts about, if not closure on, what happened to Susan Gale Poole. New DNA has been used to identify her remains, which were found tied to a tree in 1975. The skeletal remains were among mangroves along A1A in an area known as Burnt Bridges. Poole went missing three years earlier, just before Christmas 1972.

"THE FAMILY WAS HAPPY TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME WAITING TO [LEARN] WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR SISTER.”

“HE WAS CONVICTED FOR KILLING SEVERAL GIRLS THAT WERE ALSO TIED UP IN THE MANGROVES.”

In a news conference last week, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Detective William Springer said, “The family was happy to know what happened. It’s been a long time waiting to [learn] what happened to their sister.”

FORMER WILTON MANORS POLICE OFFICER SUSPECTED Investigators are now talking with Poole’s friends, hoping to fill in the blanks of what happened to her in 1972. But they’re already homing in on a suspect: former Wilton Manors police officer Gerard Schaefer. He was working for WMPD at the time, and was convicted of the brutal murders of 16-year-old Georgia Jessup and 17-yearold Susan Place. Their killings have several similarities to Poole’s, including being found in mangroves. “He got arrested for kidnapping two girls, taking them out on A1A and tying them up in the mangroves,” Springer said. “He was convicted for killing several girls that were also tied up in the mangroves.” Schaffer is connected to more than 30 deaths, but won’t be able to shed any light on Poole’s case. He died in prison in 1995 after being stabbed by another inmate. Most evidence linking him to Poole’s murder is circumstantial.

Wilton Manors resident Jake Valentine felt “surprised” when he first learned of a proposed provision of a city ordinance that would reduce the number of advisory board members from seven to five people. At the city commission meeting June 14, Valentine was one of 10 Wilton Manors residents who spoke out against the provision in the ordinance and referred to advisory board members as “ambassadors” to the city. “Now, yes, there are only five of you,” Patrick Harris, vice chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, said to the commission. “But there should be at least seven of us to bring all of those voices and whittle them down to bring them to you so you can make an informed decision as to what is best needed for these various boards.” Vice Mayor Paul Rolli proposed an ordinance to make boards more uniform and improve efficiency. He said boards currently “operate inconsistently.” Following the nearly 20-minute public comment on the ordinance, the commission voted unanimously to revise the proposed ordinance to maintain the seven-member limit on advisory boards and passed the revised ordinance. “You always have the right to change your mind and the reason we do is because of people like you who come out,” Mayor Scott Newton said of the revision. Rolli noted boards may still undergo changes in the future including possible training measures. Before the discussion of the ordinance, the commission elected four members to the Planning and Zoning Advisory Board:

SECURITY AT STONEWALL PARADE Newton announcedan addition to the security expenditures for the Stonewall Parade — a shift to $17,500 from $35,000.

NEW CITY SHUTTLE SERVICE The city commission also agreed 4-1 to a $249,954 contract with Circuit Transit Inc. to implement a city-wide shuttle service throughout the week. The service is set to start by Sept. 1 and will not impede the current Uber and Lyft rideshare program. The quarter-million-dollar contract will be funded by the Parking Fund, not taxpayer dollars, which acquires $300,000 to $600,000 a year in a non-COVID-affected year according to Finance Director Pennie Zuercher.

COMMUNITY HONORS The city commission started the meeting by honoring Pride Month and Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth Day was held June 19 to celebrate the Black community. Newton also held a moment of silence to honor a former Wilton Manors Police Service Aide Christopher Nicholas Fariello, a 33-year-old who died in the line of duty in Tallahassee June 8. The next Wilton Manors City Commission meeting is scheduled for June 28 at 7 p.m.

BAKER’S DOZEN: LGBT COOKBOOK AUTHORS Rick Karlin

I

have a fondness for cookbooks, which I collect and read like cherished novels. For those who adore the food porn that are cookbooks as much as I do, we all have our favorite authors. In honor of Pride Month, let me introduce you to some LGBT cookbook authors. ZOE ADJONYOH

Adjonyoh takes traditional Ghanaian recipes and adds her own style and point of view in Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen. From kyenam (fante fried fish with shaved papaya) to aboboi (bambara bean stew), you’re sure to find many recipes you’ll love. “As a mixed-race, Black lesbian from a working-class immigrant background who works at the intersections of food, culture, identity, and politics, I’m driven to create change in the food landscape. I hope for an equal balance in the representation of global cuisines. I want to see jollof as readily accessible as curry in supermarkets and in the minds of diners,” she writes in her bio.

PAUL ARGUIN AND CHRIS TAYLOR

On their first date in 2009, Arguin suggested they bake together over the phone. He let Taylor choose the recipe. Five years later, Arguin and Taylor were married. Today, they share a home in Atlanta with a commercial kitchen in the basement, and they just published a new cookbook, “Fabulous Modern Cookies” from The Countryman Press. Why cookies? Well, according to what they write in their book, cookies are the “most approachable of all desserts.”

VON DIAZ

Diaz is a writer, documentary producer, and author of “Coconuts & Collards: Recipes and Stories from Puerto Rico to the Deep South.” Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Atlanta she explores food, culture, and identity. In addition to her debut culinary memoir, she has contributed recipes and essays to several cookbooks and anthologies and her work has been featured in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Bon Appétit, NPR, Food & Wine Magazine, Eater, and Epicurious.

CEYENNE DOROSHOW

In “Cooking in Heels,” Doroshow offers up 40 Southern-style favorites with a Caribbean twist. A transgender woman who was inspired to write her book while serving prison time for a prostitution conviction, she writes with good humor and begins with the story of her life. Doroshow proves that food and love are the ties that bind, and family is what you make it.

ELIZABETH FALKNER

If you’ve ever wondered how professional chefs cooks during their downtime, chef Falkner, best known for her appearances on Food Network and her successful restaurants, gives you a peek behind the kitchen door in “Cooking Off the Clock: Recipes from My Downtime.” The cookbook provides casual, everyday recipes that are exciting and inspiring. If you’re looking for all-purpose recipes that are both practical and delicious, start with this.

HANNAH HART

If you’re a fan of Hart, host of the hit YouTube series My Drunk Kitchen, you’ll love this cookbook that combines her culinary knowledge with her great sense of humor. Recipes for saltine nachos and latke shotkas are both entertaining and delicious, exactly kind of food you make when you’re drunk. If you can follow a recipe.

EDD KIMBER

Kimber is a baker, food writer and TV personality. Kimber realized the corporate world wasn’t for him after entering and winning the The Great British Bake Off. His cookbooks, “The Boy Who Bakes,” “Say It With Cake,” “Patisserie Made Simple” and “One Tin Bakes,” are British staples, and he currently hosts the popular “Stir the Pot” podcast.

TIM MULLIGAN

While Mulligan isn’t a trained chef, he worked for years in restaurants and picked up delicious, satisfying, and failsafe recipes from fellow home cooks, adding some of his own touches along the way. He’s a gay dad who prepares meals every night for his family. In “The Perfect 10,” Mulligan provides fail-proof recipes from breakfast to appetizers and sides, to salads, entrées, desserts, and a full holiday menu.

BRYAN PETROFF AND DOUGLAS QUINT

“Big Gay Ice Cream,” the cookbook written by the founders of the titular beloved ice cream shop, gives you the scoop on everything you need to know about making homemade frozen treats. Along the way, you can enjoy Petroff and Quint’s strangerthan-fiction stories, cheeky humor, vibrant photography, and illustrations, and plenty of culinary and celebrity cameos (including an introduction by Anthony Bourdain).

HUNGRY FOR MORE? 

LOU RAND HOGAN

Of course, a discussion of LGBT cookbooks would not be possible without including chef Hogan’s “The Gay Cookbook.” A reprint of the original edition from the 1960s is now available. The book is campy and chatty. But, while written humorously, the recipes often are complex and cosmopolitan, and hold up surprisingly well.

JESSE SZEWCZYK

“Tasty Pride,” compiled by Szewczyk, features 75 recipes submitted from members of the queer food community. This rainbow cookbook is an eclectic mix of recipes ranging from spicy strawberry ice cream sundaes to everything bagel beignets. Each contributor shares a short personal story — some funny, some sad, and all filled with hope. Szewczyk is a food stylist and writer based in New York. He was named a Forbes 30 Under 30 of Food & Drink for 2021. “Tasty Pride” has already raised $50,000 for GLAAD.

SOUTH FLORIDA IN FILM Local company Top Cat II Productions has begun pre-production of a Mario Van Peebles film, “The Price for Freedom,” the true story of NAACP organizer Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette, who were the only husband and wife to give their lives to the civil rights movement when a bomb exploded under their bedroom floor, killing them as they slept on Christmas evening at 10:30 p.m. in 1951. No one was ever convicted of their murder. Van Peebles (“Empire,” “The Last Ship,” “Sons of Anarchy”) will direct and also star as Moore opposite Aisha Jackson, the first Black actor to portray the role of Anna in “Frozen” on Broadway. Filming will take place for six weeks in Davie, beginning in late July, in an orange grove setting that strongly resembles the Mims, Florida, home in Brevard County where the Moores worked, lived and died. Top Cat II Productions will complete exterior and interior shots with three specially constructed sets that replicate the Moore home. A school educational curriculum developed in conjunction with the production now faces uncertainty due to a new state law commonly referred to as the “Stop WOKE Act,” that restricts how racial history and issues may be addressed in classrooms.
