Alumni Relations Annual Report

Page 1

Dear Fellow Pirates, I am pleased to present you with the Seton Hall University Alumni Relations annual report for fiscal year 2013 (which ended June 30, 2013). You will immediately notice that this year’s report has been expanded. It provides more detail about the ways in which alumni are engaged with Seton Hall and an overview of the ways Alumni Relations continues to develop additional opportunities for engagement. The past year saw a tremendous expansion of opportunities for Seton Hall, Alumni Relations and thousands of alumni and students who take part in the programs, benefits and services described in these pages. Of particular note is the addition of four new staff members to our team. Each has already made a significant impact by expanding existing initiatives and creating new chances for Pirates to connect with Seton Hall. Over the coming months and years we will expand our geographic reach, grow our successful Alumni Club program and continue to expand volunteer opportunities. These are the result of studying best practices throughout the alumni relations field and listening to what you have to say — through the surveys, emails, letters, tweets, posts and calls you use to share with us how we are doing. As always, I invite you to be a part of this exciting time in our University’s history. Each year I am proud to see the growth of our campus home, and the increasing amount of alumni and friends who choose to become informed about, involved with and invested in Seton Hall. Go Pirates! Warmest Regards,

Matthew Borowick ’89/M.B.A. ’94 Associate Vice President of Alumni and Government Relations

VOLUNTEERISM

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteerism is at the very heart of alumni engagement. It is through the selfless work of so many dedicated Pirates that Seton Hall is able to move forward, to accomplish its goals and to continue to be a place where leaders learn.

POPULAR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

Alumni Relations manages a variety of opportunities for alumni, parent and student involvement. Pirates whose lives have taken them far from campus are invited to become Chapter Ambassadors. Others can start an Alumni Club or dedicate time to mentor or recruit students. There are countless ways to get involved.

HIGHLIGHTS OF VOLUNTEERISM FROM FISCAL YEAR 2013: • 684 alumni expressed interest in volunteering for the University • 428 alumni participated in a volunteer activity, many more than once The Volunteer Interest Survey allows respondents to select areas of University life in which they would like to become more involved. When opportunities arise that meet these interests, Alumni Relations facilitates contact between the volunteers and interested campus partners. Complete the survey and share your interests at www.shu.edu/go/volunteer.

SETON HALL ADMISSION RESOURCE PROGRAM (SHARP) Seton Hall’s international prospective student recruitment effort, popularly referred to as SHARP, allows alumni worldwide to give back to Seton Hall. Attend on-campus admissions events (Open House, Pirate Preview). Call or write notes to applicants or accepted students. Host regional student send-off events or yield events in your hometown.

MENTORING CURRENT STUDENTS Alumni are encouraged to help mold Seton Hall’s future graduates by volunteering a minimal amount of time to guide and mentor a current student. There are various types of career mentoring that alumni can become involved with at the University: reviewing résumés, listening to elevator pitches, conducting practice interviews, providing career advice and more.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Carry on the Seton Hall tradition of servant leadership. Check out the Alumni Calendar for service opportunities with campus and community partners.

ON-CAMPUS EVENTS Volunteer at events hosted on-campus by various partners and departments. No matter the audience, on-campus events allow you to reconnect and share your memories.

BOARDS AND COMMITTEES Alumni serve Seton Hall as members of a variety of governing boards, volunteer boards and committees. For a complete list of volunteer opportunities, visit www.shu.edu/go/volunteer.

REGIONAL CHAPTERS

ALUMNI CLUBS Seton Hall’s Alumni Clubs bring together graduates who share common connections from their student experience. The Alumni Club program allows graduates to join groups of interest to them, start new groups, and gain official recognition for groups that alumni have formed on their own. The addition of a new position to the Alumni Relations team, Associate Director of Alumni Clubs, has brought renewed focus and effort to the Alumni Club program. New clubs have been created, a greater number of alumni have been involved and clubs already in existence have received increased support. The addition of a Corporate Alumni Club program will allow alumni from varied backgrounds increased networking opportunities with fellow Pirates in their companies and their professional fields. A Student Club and Organization Grant Program offers on-campus students the opportunity to engage their alumni through planning assistance from the Alumni Relations Team. Alumni in attendance then have the opportunity to start new Alumni Clubs based around their interests. To learn more about starting or joining an Alumni Club or Corporate Alumni Club, contact Robert Mayers at (973) 378-9821 or robert.mayers@shu.edu or visit www.shu.edu/alumni and click on “Alumni Clubs.”

Alumni Relations is proud to share this report with you as evidence of our growth and achievement. As always, there are many — both within and beyond the Seton Hall community — who partnered, shared ideas, stepped up and lent a hand to help us achieve our goals. More than any other year in our history, alumni came forward to voice their willingness to deepen their involvement with the University. Alumni clubs, regional chapters, volunteer programs and other initiatives experienced solid growth. To each of you who volunteered to start a club, coordinate a regional chapter, recruit students, become a mentor or give back in some other tangible way, we thank you. We are grateful to our many partners at the University for their continued support, friendship and collaboration. Thanks to Student Services, TLTC, the Priest Community, Gourmet Dining, Athletics, DOVE, Campus Ministry, Parking Services, Public Safety, all schools and colleges and so many others. Thanks especially to our colleagues in University Advancement. Under the leadership of David Bohan, vice president, our division is accomplishing more and reaching further every day. We thank you all for your commitment to Seton Hall’s mission. The Alumni Board of Directors, led by James Orsini ’85, made strides in countless areas. As James’ term as president comes to an end, we thank him for his tireless support of Alumni Relations and Seton Hall. We thank all Board members for serving as inspirational examples of the type of alumni whose involvement continues to move Seton Hall forward. The Alumni Relations team is proud of our growth, and we are motivated by an ever-increasing number of sons and daughters of Seton Hall who continue to get involved. We will continue to provide you with an array of ways to show your Pirate Pride and build our global network of Pirates. Please continue to take advantage of them!
