Greetings from David Bossman Each year when we celebrate the Sister Rose Thering Fund's Evening of Roses fundraiser, we find inspiration in the generosity of those who dedicate their time and resources to support teachers for graduate courses in Jewish-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University. This is the University's mission, to prepare leaders in their professional and community lives, suited for a global society, with values-centered curricula. Since 1953, education in Jewish-Christian studies has been a bellwether of this university, following the path-making lead of Monsignor John M. Oesterreicher and the educational expertise of Sister Rose Thering, O.P. The Sister Rose Thering Fund focuses on recruiting professional educators dedicated to replacing prejudice with inclusive understanding and inter-religious cooperation.

The State of New Jersey's mandate for Holocaust and Genocide education emphasizes "the personal responsibility that each citizen bears to fight racism and hatred whenever and wherever it happens." Noting that "there is an inescapable link between violence and vandalism and ethnic and racial intolerance," the mandate stipulates: "Every board of education shall include instruction on the Holocaust and genocides in an appropriate place in the curriculum of all elementary and secondary school pupils." Seton Hall's inter-religious faculty in Jewish-Christian Studies is constituted to advance these goals. The Sister Rose Thering Fund reaches out to teachers in public, private, and religious schools to participate in this educational mission. Teachers, additionally, interact with diverse professionals from other fields in Jewish-Christian Studies classes, further enhancing the quality of their education. We thank all who participate in this 25th anniversary Evening of Roses. We ask for your continued partnership in our mission to advance the legacy of Sister Rose Thering by fostering understanding and cooperation among Jews, Christians, and people of other religious traditions through advocacy and education. We form a partnership of awareness for the advancement of learning, engaging young people for leadership in realizing the values of mutual understanding.

A Message from Deborah Lerner Duane How do we know when our actions have made a difference? That our dayto-day work is affecting the lives of others? When do we push a little harder, let up on the effort or just coast along?

For 25 years, the single-minded determination of trustees, staff, donors, teacher-scholars and volunteers has made it possible for the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies to share the lessons of understanding and acceptance with thousands of children and teenagers. We have made a worthwhile difference. We’ve positively affected lives. We have spent 25 years pushing a little harder every day. And we are enormously proud of what we have accomplished.
This pride is well-deserved. Yet each of us here tonight understands how much more we must do. We observe a society that seems to be moving backwards, with less appreciation for other religious traditions, more people willing to assume a bigoted worldview, fewer opportunities to learn from those whose lives are different from our own. The Sister Rose Thering Fund is no stranger to misguided thinking and shameful behaviors. Our mission, to advance the legacy of a woman whose own audacity enabled her to challenge the beliefs of her day, will remain firm. We will foster understanding and cooperation among Jews, Christians and people of other religious traditions through advocacy and education. We will continue to imagine a world without religious prejudice. We will value differences, demonstrate courage, build bridges, create dialogue and inspire the next generation. We will depend on your continued participation, and we will work together for the next 25 years to develop change. As I wrap up five years as Chairman of the Sister Rose Thering Fund, I’m grateful to the trustees with whom I worked so closely, to my fellow officers Ann Burgmeyer, Susan Feinstein, Melinda Hanlon and Alan Silberstein, and to the SRTF staff – Executive Director David Bossman, Program Manager Clare Giangreco and Administrator Marilyn Zirl, of blessed memory. Each of you guided me, listened to me and challenged me, and in the end, made it possible for our Fund to move ahead, ready to face the next 25 years of our commitment to the teachers we support and the children in their classrooms. I would be remiss in not expressing my thanks to the five SRTF chairs who preceded my own term. The late Dr. Charles Steiner, Robert Werbel, Kenneth Oleckna, Luna Kaufman and Paul Gibbons established and sustained the strong foundation a viable nonprofit requires in order to be effective. Our accomplishments in these last five years have been built on their efforts, along with those of the trustees who served with them, and of course, Sister Rose herself. In this spirit, I extend my best wishes to Melinda Hanlon as she takes over as SRTF chair on July 1. The Fund will continue to flourish under her leadership. I know you join me in congratulating Darrell K. Terry, Sr., and Marilyn Rosenbaum this evening. I can think of no better celebration of our first 25 years than to recognize the accomplishments of these two remarkable people.

Marilyn Rosenbaum Sister Rose Thering Lifetime Achievement Award As a founding trustee of the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in JewishChristian Studies, Marilyn Rosenbaum has had an important role in shaping the vision and implementing the mission of the organization that honors her this evening. Born at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, Marilyn spent her childhood in Irvington, and left New Jersey to attend Syracuse University, majoring in Speech and Drama. In 1949, Marilyn married Leon Rosenbaum, starting a happy and successful life with him that lasted 62 years. She and Leon have two daughters, Fran and Linda. Linda and her husband Kenneth Wasserman gave Marilyn three wonderful grandsons – Jeffrey (married to Nicole), Michael and Jordan. For many years, Marilyn and Leon worked side-by-side at their company, Delta Photocomp Corporation. She was involved with a spectrum of activities, including general management, marketing, sales, customer service and accounts management. It wasn’t long before Marilyn began to put her talents and skills to good use in many volunteer and charitable activities. One of Marilyn’s first volunteer endeavors was to return to her roots at Beth Israel, prompted by the success of Leon’s experience as a bypass surgery patient there. Her hard work and dedication resulted in her being voted in as president of the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Women’s Organization. She was later elected to the board of Beth Israel and became a charter member of its Health Care Foundation. Marilyn’s relationship with the Beth Israel Auxiliary spanned 20 years, during which she played a key role in increasing membership to 750 members and raising its annual contributions to $250 million. In 1995, the Auxiliary was instrumental in organizing the inaugural Partners in Care for Play Golf Tournament with the Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center. Marilyn’s nonprofit involvement also included the New Jersey Region of the American Jewish Congress, where, among other roles, she took on fundraising and social action responsibilities. She created “Congress to Trenton Day,” testifying before the New Jersey senate committee against a proposed constitutional convention and a balanced state budget. She ultimately served as the New Jersey Region’s president, and was later named to the national organization’s Governing Board. By 1993, Marilyn had become active in the cause to allow Soviet Jewry to emigrate to the West. Her interest and work became a movement to grant people of all faiths the opportunity to leave the Soviet Union. During this time, a colleague told Marilyn that Sister Rose Thering might be of assistance involving the Catholic community in this effort. The introduction was the start of a lifelong friendship between the two women, and a new chapter in Marilyn’s life began. At the first of many rallies to address this international issue, Sister Rose was one of the main speakers. To show their gratitude, Marilyn and her fellow organizers gave Sister Rose her first computer. And as Sister Rose began organizing what would ultimately become the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies, she invited Marilyn to become part of the initial group. In the 25 years since SRTF’s founding, Marilyn has served several terms as vice chair, and has been a member of every Fund committee. Since 2013, she has been co-chair of the program committee, organizing the Evening of Roses, Dr. Marcia Robbins Wilf Lecture, Scholarship Presentation and annual Essay Competition events. Her exceptional networking skills have made it possible for the Fund to connect with many community and religious leaders. We are proud to recognize Marilyn’s long-standing support for social action, equal rights and fostering understanding and cooperation for people of all faiths. The list of Marilyn’s accomplishments continues. She was the first female president of Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, NJ, was a founding member of the YES Program in West Orange and is currently on the board of Newark Emergency Services for Families. We congratulate Marilyn on her achievements, and applaud her service and commitment to our community.
Darrell K. Terry, Sr., MHA, MPH, FACHE President and Chief Executive Officer, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey
Reverend Ron Christian Award for Community Leadership Darrell K. Terry, Sr., MHA, MPH, FACHE is a 20-year employee of RWJBarnabas Health and has more than 30 years of experience in health care administration at three major New Jersey Health care organizations. He began his career at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey in Operations Management in 1997. He was named Senior Vice President of Operations in 2006, became Chief Operating Officer in 2011 and in May 2016 he assumed his current position as President and Chief Executive Officer. In this role, Mr. Terry is responsible for the strategic operations of this 665-bed regional care teaching hospital that is home to one of the nation’s top ten heart transplant centers that has performed more than 1,000 heart transplants; New Jersey’s only Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program and a Valve Center that performs more cardiac valve procedures, including minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs), than any other center in the state. The Newark Beth Israel robotic surgery program is the most experienced in northern New Jersey. The Frederick B. Cohen, MD, Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey Breast Health Center provide seamless integration of cancer prevention, specialized care and treatment options. Children’s Hospital of New Jersey (CHoNJ), offers more than 30 specialized pediatric services including New Jersey’s largest Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders; and the Children’s Heart Center that offers medical and surgical treatments for the most complex cardiac abnormalities. Mr. Terry’s expertise is in the areas of administration, operations, management and advocacy. In his advocacy role, Mr. Terry has pioneered award-winning initiatives such as the “Beth Challenge” and KidsFit, The Beth Greenhouse and the Reverend Dr. Ronald B. Christian Community Health and Wellness Center. Mr. Terry is committed to improving the overall health and wellness of communities served by Newark Beth Israel. A graduate of Rutgers University, with a concentration in business management, Mr. Terry received his Master in Healthcare Administration from Seton Hall University and an M.P.H. from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. He is Board Certified in Healthcare Administration and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Terry is a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow, sits on several boards and has received numerous awards throughout his career including, numerous community service awards and recognitions from the Men of Essex and the Township of Irvington. In 2010, he received the distinguished Khary Orr Leadership Award from the African American Heritage Parade Committee. He was appointed by Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka to serve on the Newark Workforce Investment Board and by Governor Chris Christie to preside on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. His work with the greater Newark community has garnered him awards from Steve Adubato’s Stand and Deliver, as well as the Maplewood and Oranges Unit of the NAACP; Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA), Community Leadership Award; NJBIZ Healthcare Hero Finalist; the Distinguished Community Leadership Service Award from the National Council of Negro Women, Inc; and the Humanitarian Award from the JAHJAH Foundation (Jamaicans Abroad Helping Jamaicans at Home). Mr. Terry has strong personal ties to Newark Beth Israel. He was born at The Beth, as were his brother and two of his children.
About Reverend Ron Christian Educated in the Newark Public School System, Ronald B. Christian graduated from Weequahic High School in 1982, where he was an accomplished long distance runner Reverend Ron, as he was affectionately known, was called to the ministry and licensed to preach the Gospel in January 1998 at the Upper Room Missionary Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. He was called by a unanimous vote to pastor the Christian Love Baptist Church in Irvington, NJ. He was officially ordained on March 25th 2001 and went on to serve as the senior Pastor at CLBC whose membership over time grew to 6, 000 members. He obtained a Master’s of Divinity and Theological studies from Christian Bible Seminary in July 2002, attended and graduated from the Harvard University School of Divinity Leadership Institute on June 28, 2002, and attended classes in the Seton Hall University Graduate Department of Jewish-Christian Studies under the sponsorship of the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies. Reverend Ron was a member of the Newark Board of Education School Management Team and served as Chaplain for the Newark Police Clergy Alliance, the Beth Israel Hospital of Newark, the Essex County Youth Detention Center, the Essex County Prosecutors Office, the Irvington Police Department, the City of Orange Township Police Department, the Essex County Sheriff ’s Department, and the Maplewood Police Department. He was the President and Founder of M.I.R.A (Men Interested in Rebuilding America) and a member of the Irvington Police and Fire Clergy Association. He was the instructor for the New Jersey General Baptist Christian Education Conference, and the North Jersey District Missionary Baptist Association, a member of the Irvington Chamber of Commerce, and Advisory Board Member for the Center of Urban Education, a Board Member of the Weed & Seed Program, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Integrity House Inc., Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, and the Board of Education for Essex County Vocational Schools. He was one of the first delegates appointed by the Governor’s Office for the study of faith-based community development, and received numerous community service awards from the township of Irvington, City of Newark, County of Essex, State of New Jersey, New Jersey Professional Black Business Association, United States Senate, United States House of Representatives, Congressional Black Caucus, and the New Jersey State Assembly for the work he did both nationally and internationally. His extensive humanitarian efforts yielded him an honorary doctorate degree. Following his death in October, 2016, the City of Newark named a street in his honor, Essex County created the Essex County Rev. Ronald B. Christian Recreation Complex in Weequahic Park, Beth Israel Hospital created the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s Reverend Dr. Ronald B. Christian Community Health and Wellness Center.

Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure that we welcome you as we celebrate our 25th annual Evening of Roses. In 1993, Sister Rose Thering, O.P., Ph.D. established the fund that bears her name today. A pioneer in Jewish-Christian education, Sister Rose was the voice of reconciliation and dialogue among Jews and Christians. She believed in the power of teachers and her deepest wish was to provide scholarship support for educators. Today more than ever her supporters seek what she sought, to transform our world through education. Tonight we welcome two special guests of honor. Mr. Darrell K. Terry, Sr., MHA,MPH,FACHE, President and Chief Operating Officer of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey who will be receiving the Reverend Ron Christian Award for Community Leadership and Mrs. Marilyn Rosenbaum, founding member of the SRTF Board of Trustees, who will be honored with the Sister Rose Thering Lifetime Achievement Award. We congratulate both our honorees and thank them for their efforts to “Tikkun Olam”to repair our world through their work and philanthropic efforts. Sister Rose believed that our children are our future. Your presence and support of tonight’s journal and program will result in scholarship support for the teachers in our Jewish-Christian Studies program here at Seton Hall University. As we celebrate our silver anniversary we bring back the “evening “ of the Evening of Roses. This surely is a special event, a gala evening marking a milestone in an elegant way. Our brand-new Bethany Hall showcases our jubilee. We mark 25 years of effort to imagining a world without religious prejudice, a lofty goal that we have not reached and probably never will. Still we need to commit ourselves to this effort continually and we will. Sister Rose would probably be surprised and honored to know that her example and cause still lives on in the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies. While education and scholarship are primary to our cause with the activities in which we are engaged, we always want to be able to interact, engage, network, and socialize. So let us all enjoy this evening. We want to thank Manuel Santos of Santos Florist who helped us with the beautiful flower arrangements. Michael Ziegler aided us with the wine selection. THE SISTER ROSE THERING FUND for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies
Our History The concept of teaching about interfaith relations in this Catholic university dates back to the arrival in 1953 of Monsignor John M. Oesterreicher, who established the Institute for Judaeo-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. Oesterreicher, a convert from Judaism to Catholicism in 1927, had been lecturing, doing research and creating publications for fifteen years when he sensed the need for a program coordinator to flesh out the work he was doing and bring his lessons to the wider community at Seton Hall. Therefore, in 1968 he advertised for someone to fill this position. As fate would have it, Sister Rose Thering, O.P., Ph.D., with her background in education and Jewish-Christian Studies and her keen interest in the Jewish roots of Christianity and the State of Israel, responded to his ad and was hired for the position. Its tasks included organizing summer trips to Israel for teachers and lay persons to learn about the Holy Land. The program was called the Menorah Institute. Its positive impact, both on Monsignor Oesterreicher and teachers, led to the establishment of a Master’s degree program, directed by Father Lawrence Frizzell, now offered in the Department of Religion. During the more than thirty years of her career as professor of higher education in the College of Education and Human Resources, Sister Rose continued to lead the Menorah Institute and became a close colleague of David M. Bossman, Ph.D. He had arrived at Seton Hall in 1985, served for a time as Provost and then as chair of the Department of Jewish-Christian Studies. Dr. Bossman and a group of close friends of Sister Rose wanted to offer teachers more courses in Jewish-Christian Studies, and eventually discussed the possibility of offering scholarships to teachers. The idea of developing a significant
fund to help defray costs of tuition led to the establishment in 1993 of such a fund and program. Originally called the Sister Rose Thering Endowment, later changed to the Sister Rose Thering Fund, it is overseen by an elected Board of Trustees who created a set of working by-laws. In 1994, the State of New Jersey, under then Governor Christine Todd Whitman, and urged on by Sister Rose and others, signed into law a mandate to teach about the Holocaust and Genocide in all public schools in New Jersey, grades K-12. This law created the mandate and was bolstered by the message of Pope John Paul II to Catholic schools to remember the Shoah, “Reflections on the Shoah” (March 1998). Sister Rose became a founding member of the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, charged to carry out the Mandate, and served until her death in 2006. Today, the Fund offers scholarships annually and has reached some 400 educators in the course of its existence. It raises funds through donations received primarily at the Evening of Roses, held each spring, a program that has honored outstanding educators and individuals who have shown traits of compassion, altruism and courage in various endeavors. The Sister Rose Thering Fund and the graduate Program in Jewish-Christian Studies have been called “the hidden jewels” of Seton Hall University, but as Dr. Bosman has remarked, in reality they are no longer hidden but treasures found as the Fund contributes more than $60,000 annually in scholarship funding to the University. The Program continues to promote understanding and cooperation among Jews, Christians and people of other religious traditions through advocacy and education.

Dear Friends of Sister Rose Thering Fund: It is an honor for the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education and Genocide Studies to support The Sister Rose Thering Fund and the impactful academic programs the Fund has developed at Seton Hall University. We often quote, with appropriate attribute, the instructional building blocks and positive thoughts that Sister Rose initiated and that the Fund has maintained. Her example stands as a monument to her beliefs and has created educational guidelines that teachers appreciate and that students admire. Her leadership and her ability to project her ideas into lessons leading to good fellowship among scholars has already served two generations of attentive students and waits for another presently maturing in our grade schools. The fact that these children were born into a world motivated by respect for one another adds to Sister Rose’s legacy and makes us proud to have known her. In 1993, Sister Rose Thering partnered with her inter-religious colleagues to establish the scholarship fund that bears her name today. A pioneer in Jewish-Christian relations, Sister Rose joined the faculty at Seton Hall University, where she devoted her life to help transform others through education. She was the voice of reason and reconciliation among Jews and Christians. Sister Rose believed in the power of education and teachers. Her mission was to provide a scholarship fund to educators enrolled in Seton Hall's graduate program in Jewish-Christian studies. Today, the mission still continues and supporters of the SRTF for Education in JewishChristian Studies remain dedicated in continuing her work. Tonight, we celebrate SRTF's silver anniversary, with a special "Evening of Roses". I would like to congratulate tonight's honorees Mr. Darrell K. Terry, Sr. for receiving the Reverend Ron Christian Award for Community Leadership and Mrs. Marilyn Rosenbaum for receiving the Sister Rose Thering Lifetime Achievement Award. They are both true pioneers in the community and an example of SRTF's mission. THE SISTER ROSE THERING FUND SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Begun in 2003, the SRTF Sponsored Scholarship Program has awarded 150 scholarships for one course per semester to selected teachers in our program. These awards are made by individual supporters of the Fund as a means of introducing the sponsor to a student, allowing them to learn about one another and enabling the sponsor to follow the student through his or her path of study. Students and their sponsors are honored at an annual Awards program held in the spring of each year.
