This is the prologue to a graphic novel about Ignaz Semmelweis, the Hungarian obstetrician who determined the cause and cure of Childbed Fever, an illness that killed thousands of new mothers within days of giving birth. Despite the party line that the fever was, "The price that God put on the great gift of bearing a child," Semmelweis found himself compelled by science and haunted by the screams that shot through his ward as another mother passed in the night. Fraught with nightmares, unable to rest, he devoted himself to finding the secrets of the fever. What he found, however, was a new way of thinking.
