Ailments and Age

t 78 I felt that I have experienced whatever this existence has to offer — a World War, other wars, dictators who came and went, Lok Sabha, state and local elections. Science has helped to extend the life span through transplants, by-pass surgery, reconstruction surgery, chemo-therapy and what not. Science has also helped us cope with aging through the remote control, cell phones, hearing aids, walkers. However, I recently discovered that I am now experiencing a phenomenon unique to ageing — ailments. Recently I felt as if I was swinging around in my bed. Some friends, who had come over, told my wife to call a doctor, she should take it seriously, I was suffering from vertigo and anything could happen. I was unperturbed. I felt that I was having a free roller-coaster ride without the fear of falling off — I knew that I was already on the flat of my back. Just then my daughter arrived from Bangalore. God’s ways are mysterious. The doctor told her to give me some medication and bring me for a check-up in the morning. I knew that my end was not so near after all. The doctor diagnosed my problem as Malnutrition. My wife took this very seriously going to the super market to get porridge, complan plus Spiced Prunes, Blue Cheese, corned beef, sardines, and all her other favorites. I was advised to wear a collar and a belt as my bone structure needed to be held the way the medical books say it should be. The problem was sleeping. Pillows had to be placed to support the shoulders; another was required below the spine, a third below the knee and two more under the heel. I decided that it would be better to sleep on a chair. My wife, who potters around at night with trips to the frig; saw me in the drawing room. “What are you doing here at 3.00 a.m.? You know you are not well. Get back into bed.” I realized the importance of every part of my body, even a damaged knee can immobilize you, make the world around you look terrible, prevent you from doing your normal duties. However, I am still able to write and was glad to see my article in print on the outcome of the elections. There were also comments on this, though not all were complementary. I learnt that everything is important. ABC analysis is for the management schools. In life even the Cs are important. You realize this when you hurt your little finger or a toe. The big discovery we make when we are sick is that

there are a number of people who are concerned and ready to advise you what to eat, how you should live, the exercises to do to lubricate your joints, etc. etc. The number of formulae for healthy living is more than the number of people you tell your problems to — some have more than one solution. If I followed all the instructions I have received I would be doing nothing else the whole day. Fortunately our forefathers have helped the human being to evolve to recover from sickness and have passed on the DNA which has helped us to heal ourselves. It has taken millions of years to learn to cope with the harshness which existence on this earth involves — living without electricity in the hot summer, the stench of rotting garbage, the blaring of the mikes to celebrate some netas birthday. The Bible says “Unless you become like little children you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven” I am doing just that. Like a child I am relearning to walk, to go up and down stairs, to get in and out of bed. My future salvation is assured as every time I am successful I thank God so that my whole life is now one long prayer of thanks to the Lord. I know that these ailments will pass as the life span has been predicted to cross a hundred years. I am only waiting for the return of my doctor, who decided to go to USA for her daughter’s wedding at this critical time.

On Saturday morning the “Ode to Joy” rang out from a teenaged orchestra as Pope Francis entered a room packed with 400 Italian school children from disadvantaged homes. They waved and cheered as the Pope spoke to them in simple terms about the importance of light and love in a dark world.

Goa Diocese Launches ‘Stop Suicide' Helpline
T
he Metropolitan Archdiocese of Goa and Daman has launched a roundthe-clock emergency suicide prevention helpline to proactively address the escalating suicide rates in the region.
“Life is given by God, and only he has the power to take it back,” said local archbishop Filipe Neri Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão at the May 24 announcement of the “God Saves Life-line” initiative. “In today's society, we need to offer hope to the people that God has created them in love and that He still loves them…and this hope is what 'God Saves Lifeline,' is expected to offer. ” Archbishop Rosário Ferrão inaugurated the project by leading a prayer service and imparting his blessing while commissioning the initiative to the Diocesan Center for Missionary Animation in Old Goa. Located about eight miles from the capital city Panjim, the center is near the renowned Basilica of Bom Jesus that holds a reliquary of St. Francis Xavier and draws daily an average of over five thousand devotees and visitors.

Cardinals To Decide Canonization Dates On June 12

The National Crime Records Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs reports that the average suicide rate in Goa is 15.8 per 100 thousand – above the National Average of 11.4 – an “alarmingly distressing” fact putting the state in tenth position country-wide. “To me saving one life is as important as saving thousand lives,” Fr. Dias said. “If somebody becomes aware of receiving hope in hopelessness; finds openness of love, care, affection, concern and positive energy, assistance of qualified counselors a depressed life situation can bring optimistic change.” He noted that the challenges youth face in India range from family poverty, drug abuse and alcoholism, failure in love affairs, dowry disputes, rural illiteracy, ignorance, and superstitions, agricultural challenges, to bankruptcy loans and many other causes. Fr. Dias strongly emphasized the “important of role of the parents” in upbringing of their children. He urged parents, “Teach your children to appreciate life and be trained to accept gracefully the many frustrations which are part of life so that their tolerance level is increased.” Callers are assured of confidentiality and can also be provided help through a state-wide network of government services like hospitals, law enforcement and legal bodies such as police, the fire department and associations like Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Caritas and other Church bodies. —Catholic News Agency

Vatican City: Cardinals who are in Rome will gather around Pope Francis for a consistory on June 12 to decide upon ?the date for the canonization of six future saints, including two Indians. Zenit news agency reported that the canonization dates would be decided at the ordinary public consistory. The Indians are Fr Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia Eluvathingal, a member of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel. The two are already called Blessed, the penultimate stage in the long-drawn canonization process. Others in the list are Bishop Giovanni Antonio Farina (1803-1888) of Vicenza, Italy, founder of the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts, Fr Ludovico de Casoria (1814-1885), an Italian member of the Order of Friars Minor and founder of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Elizabeth and Fr Nicola da Longobardi, Italian member of the Oblate of the Order of Minims. Pope Francis will also canonize Amato Ronconi (1225-1292), an Italian layperson of the Third Order of St. Francis, who founded the Hospital-Hospice for Poor Pilgrims of Saludecio, now the Beato Amato Ronconi Nursing Home. With these two, India will have four saints, three of them Kerala, a southern Indian state where Saint Thomas the Apostle is believed to have preached the Gospel in the first century. The first Indian saint is Gonsalo Garcia, a Franciscan friar, who died a martyr in Japan in 1597 at the age of 41. He was born in the western Indian coastal town of Vasai, near Mumbai. His feast is held on the first Sunday nearest to the neap tide following Christmas in Vasai. The second Indian saint is Sister Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception. The member of Franciscan Clarist Congregation died in 1946 aged 36 at Bharananganam, near Palai in Kerala. She is the first woman saint from India and first saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church that traces its origin to the apostle. Ex-communication Or In-Communication?
O
ne would not have expected a furore over ex-communication in the papacy of Pope Francis; who has repeatedly been asking the clergy not to close doors, but to open up the Church to welcome even those with whom it may be seemingly in conflict with. But the unthinkable has happened. Martha and Gert Heizer, a lay couple, that are leaders of a church reform group in Austria, have been excommunicated. This has raised the hackles of reformist lay leaders across the globe, especially of a group “Catholic Church Reforms International” (CCRIL), with which I am associated. As a consequence I am in the loop of hundreds of emails from different parts of the world, expressing diverse views. Among the Indians in the loop are three venerable doctors – Dr James Kottoor, Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala and Dr John Dayal. I am not a doctor, and don’t nurse any grudge about it! What is the furore all about? Is the Catholic Church again behaving like a Fuhrer – a ruthless dictator? The alleged transgression of the Heizers is that they assumed the role of a priest, and “celebrated” the Holy Eucharist on their own. It is not clear if this was a oneoff flash in the pan, or was it something that they were doing regularly, and inviting others to participate. It is also not clear if the ecclesiastical authorities under whose territorial jurisdiction they come, took cognizance of the matter, issued warnings or sought explanations, before taking the extreme step of ex-communication (removal from the Catholic Church, and denial of the sacraments). Hence I reserve comment on this specific ex-communication. However, this action has opened up a Pandora’s Box. On the one hand we have the particular circumstances that led to this act, and on the other is the evolving mindset of many laypersons that love the Church, but are not necessarily in agreement with some of its orthodoxy or orthopraxis. So what led the Heizers to do what they did? Was it an act of open

(Contd.. from p. 5) wrongs do not make a right. The Heizers will have greatly erred if they have tried to assume priestly office, no matter what the circumstances. Such an act would be considered a direct challenge to the very foundation of the Church on Apostolic Succession, and ecclesiastical discipline. The Heizers seem to have mistaken their prophetic role for a priestly function. From Old Testament times the offices and roles of prophets and priests were distinctly different. Infact the prophets were often at dalliance with both priest and king, the three arms of the people of God. Rev Josef Neuner SJ, himself an expert advisor to Vatican II, and coincidentally also Austrian, though based in India, wrote a small book “The Prophetic Role of the Laity”, that had a great impact on me. He identified the five characteristics of a prophet as (1) One who speaks in the name of the Lord (2) His message is contextualised – specific, not generalized (3) He is confronted by the power of evil (4) His only weapon is the Word of God (5) His life is no longer his own. A prophet therefore must speak out clearly, based on God’s Word, in a given context, and be prepared for isolation and persecution. Quite a tall order, but there it is. If indeed the Heizers feel that they are fulfilling a prophetic role, inspired by the Holy Spirit, then they must be prepared to be misunderstood, and face the consequences. This has happened right through the history of the People of God. However, this does not mean that those supportive of their cause be mute spectators, if they perceive any injustice.
To be fair to all concerned, let us also examine the process of ex-communication, as laid down in Canon Law. I am no expert. Nevertheless, I share what I have studied. Book VII of Canon Law deals at length on judicial processes in the Church. There are two kinds of ex-communication. One is ferendae sententiae, that which is imposed after the judgment of an ecclesial court; presumably after following a prescribed judicial process, and giving the accused an opportunity to be heard. The second is latae sententiae, which is automatically incurred on committing a particular offence, “without intervention or judgment”! This latter goes against all norms of jurisprudence. In India we have inherited British jurisprudence that is based on the premise that a person is innocent till proven guilty. A latae sententiae ex-communication is contrary to this norm. This severe form of punishment is prescribed in the following cases – (1) Desecration of the Eucharistic species (Can 1367), (2) A physical assault on the Pope (Can 1370), (3) A priest who grants absolution in a case of adultery (Can 977 & 1378:1), which is not very clear to me, (4) A bishop who consecrates another as a bishop without papal approval, and the person so consecrated (Can 1382), (5) A confessor who breaks the confessional seal of secrecy (Can 1388), and (6) A person who actually incurs an abortion (Can 1398). Other than the last instance, all the others pertain to ecclesiastical authority or discipline. Only the last is a purely moral issue, which one needs to discuss at length separately. 1318, which states that the greatest moderation must be exercised in cases of latae sententiae ex-communication. There seems to be some anomaly here. If something is incurred automatically, without “judicial intervention”, then where is the scope for discretion or moderation? In the light of the above the questions that arise in the Keizers’ case are: Under what process and provisions of Canon Law were they indicted? Were they given an opportunity to be heard? Did they participate/ co-operate in the judicial/ enquiry process, if any? Were they given an opportunity to admit to performing an act that goes against the very essence of the sacraments? Did they defy ecclesiastical authority and declare that they would press on regardless? If indeed so, then they cannot now cry “foul”. Before espousing their cause these questions need to be answered. Whatever be the facts and circumstances of the Heizer case, I have two critical points to make.

It was a pleasant surprise thereofre to find fellow scribes like Rev Cedric Prakash SJ, Alfonso Elanjickal SSP, and George Menezes all in the same issue of the Secular Citizen, together with my own article. Prakash quoted Pope Francis "Communications Day Message to listen and learn from one another. The Secular Citizen is doing just that. Elangikal, who is also the President of the Indian Catholic Press Association has made a strong appeal to potential writers to pick up the pen. I fully endorse his view that writing changes or impacts people's lives. Menezes, referring to his BJP days says that it was an attempt at building bridges, not walls; something that all of us should do in every spehere of life.

issue at stake is not whether M/s Irani, a 12th standard pass, is qualified for the coveted post but, because of the contradictions and inconsistencies in her Lok Sabha poll affidavits of 2004 and 2014. Such misleading and false declarations in poll affidavits are of a serious nature and could well invite penal action and disqualification. In the present case it has also come as a major embarrassment to Mr Modi, who chose to appoint M/s Irani in preference to the highly qualified and erudite Murli Manohar Joshi. However, this is not a case without precedence. We have witnessed this even in Goa where unqualified persons have held responsible posts allegedly on false affidavits, without facing disqualification. This is the sad and disturbing side of politics. Nevertheless , it is not necessary that one has to be an architect to hold the post of Town Planning minister or an army man to be Defence minister. A person’s organizational skills are more important.
Two Sides Of The Same Coin? It is both regrettable and an affront to the Christian community that respected Goa Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has chosen to club together Fr. Cedric Prakash and Ram Sene’s Mutalikk, as 2 sides of the same coin. Fr Cedric is a veteran and noted activist
based in Ahmedabad , championing the cause of human rights , justice and peace in Gujarat and other parts of India. In recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field, Fr Cedric has been the recipient of several national and international awards. In 1995 he was conferred the Kabir Puraskar award by the President of India for promoting communal peace and harmony in the country. Later in 2006, Fr Cedric was awarded the minority rights award by the govt. of India. He is also the recipient of the highest French civilian award for promoting and defending human rights in India. It is therefore sad that his work in the human rights field has not been appreciated , misunderstood by some, and even described as “ trying to spread hatred using religion for the purpose”. As a priest who has dedicated his life for the promotion of peace and justice, it becomes difficult to accept that Fr Cedric belongs to the same category of Mutalik and his men, who go about beating up girls and married women and creating communal disturbance in the country in the guise of moral policing.Mutalik now proposes to distribute swords to Hindu families in Goa to protect them against minorities.

Statement by Fr. Cedric Prakash on the Candidates, Crime allegations made against him by the Goa CM and Corruption
T
he allegations made by the Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar (as reported in some sections of the media today), accusing me of “spreading religious discontent” are extremely mischievous and very unfortunate. I visited Goa in March 2014 at the invitation of the Catholic Council of Goa and the focus of all my talks was (and which will continue to be) the Constitution of India, the values enshrined in them and the fact that large sections of our people are deprived of their legitimate rights both in Gujarat and in other parts of India. Article 19 of the Constitution gives me the right of freedom of speech and expression. Apart from focusing on the Constitution, I have been consistent in saying that the Freedom of Religion Law enacted by the Government of Gujarat in 2003 goes against the letter and spirit of the Indian Constitution particularly Article 25 which guarantees every single citizen the right to freely profess, practice and propagate one’s religion. It also goes against Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which gives one the right to freely change his religion or belief to another. Further, I have always questioned the Gujarat model of “development” which

only caters to a section of society. There is sufficient research studies and statistical data to prove that what is being flaunted are half-truths and myths; social indicators of large sections of the poor and marginalized very strongly belie the development of Gujarat. It is common knowledge that Gujarat has always been a fairly industrialized State since the early seventies. It is not a “miracle” that has happened in the last ten years or so. I have never used or abused any religion to create any ‘discontent’. My closest associates and friends belong to all religions and particularly from the majority community. I have always been an advocate for communal harmony and peace but I do so within the framework of justice and human rights for all. I have never attacked or said anything against another’s religious beliefs. That CM Parrikar has compared me with one of his ilk speaks volumes of his mindset and the fact that fascism is gaining more and more ground in the country. On April 9th 2014, I had already sent out a response to CM Parrikar on some of his earlier allegations against me. There is nothing which I have said which is not true or which cannot be substantiated with concrete data.

orty of the 44 ministers in the Modi govt are crorepatis with the wealthiest being Finance minister Arun Jaitley. That’s fine, but the annoying aspect is that about 30% of the ministers have criminal cases pending against them (Times of India, May 28th 2014). The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 44 of the 46 ministers including PM Narendra Modi. Of the 44 ministers, 13 ministers (nearly 30%) have declared criminal cases against them; while eight or 18% face serious criminal charges including attempt to murder, communal disharmony, kidnapping and electoral violations. In the All –India situation regarding MPs elected to the Lok Sabha from their respective quotas, Bihar tops with 27 MPs or 67% followed by Maharashtra 30 (64%) , Andhra 20 (48%) and UP with 28 (35%). The general party wise position of IPC cases percentage wise also show a disturbing trend with RJD-100, Shiv Sena -78, NCP- 66, Left-64, JDU-50, JDP- 38, BJP-34, Cong-28, and the overall average-36%. Criminality in politics breeds corruption and nepotism and will not be conducive for ‘clean governance’. However, the Modi govt means business, for it has set out to curb corruption in the ‘rural job scheme’. The poor and the deprived need to be elevated in the community and their dignity as human beings restored. One also hopes that the longpending discrimination against SC and ST Christians will also be adequately addressed. They fully deserve their due, Constitutional recognition and rights and our respect and acceptance — “Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly—Do not let the downtrodden be put to shame” (Romans 12:16— Psalm 74:21) . Spiritual Head Of Malankara Orthodox Church Passes Away Pathanamthitta: Catholicos Baselios M a r t h o a m a Didymus I, spiritual head of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, passed away on 27th May 2014 following prolonged illness at Parumala near here, church sources said. He was 94. Didymus I stepped down as head of the Kerala-based church in 2010 on the grounds of poor health but continued to be the supreme spiritual head of the community. He was born in Tiruvalla. Side by side theological studies, he also took a masters degree in English literature and had taught in schools and colleges before raised as a Metropolitan of the church. He took over as the supreme head of the church in 2005 and was elevated as Catholicos of the East.

The figures relating to the “official” life of the Church – the legal-institutional aspect that is – include the period that runs from March last year to 22 February 2014. The Catholic Church is currently divided into 2,981 ecclesiastical districts, dioceses or other kinds of institutions. The number of people who are being baptized is constantly growing. In the period between 2005 and 2012, the number of baptized people around the world rose from 1115 to 1229 million, an increase of 10.2 per cent . If we compare this to the world population’s rate of growth in the same period, we see that this has gone from 6, 46 to 7, 02 billion. So Catholic presence in the world has risen slightly, from 17.3 per cent to 17.5 per cent. But this growth varied greatly according to geographical area and so the total figure is different. Europe’s results are the worst. Although it is home to 23 per cent of the world’s Catholic community (2012), it is by far the least dynamic area, with numbers of baptized rising at a meagre rate of just over 2 per cent. The presence of Catholics in the region amounts to about 40 per cent. Africa is the continent that is witnessing the greatest growth; this probably helps explain the fresh outbreaks of violence
against Christians and Catholics by Islamic extremist groups. Globally, Africa is undoubtedly the continent where growth is most notable. The rate at which the number of Africa’s Catholics (almost 199 million in 2012) has risen, is almost double that of Asia (29%) and far higher than the population growth rate in that same period of time. The balance between continents has changed hugely. The Catholic presence in Africa is stronger (the number of African Catholics has risen from 13.8 per cent in 2005 to 16.2 per cent of the total number of the world’s Catholics in 2012). Europe’s Catholics, however, continue to drop in number: from 25.5 per cent in 2005 their number has fallen to 23.3 per cent in 2012. But Asia’s Catholics are also on the rise. Asia accounts for over 60 per cent of the world population and Asian Catholics account for about 11 per cent of the population. 49 per cent of the world’s baptized Catholic population is American, a relative majority. ‘Character and Consciousness’
A
ccording to Indian program ming the man of character is one who is not a rebel, who lives according to tradition, scriptures. One should adjust to society; bow down to vested interest, to status quo. The Indian mind believes in collectivity it has no respect for the individual. The Indian mind is programmed to be that of a slave, it is not ready to function in freedom. If there is nobody to dictate to it, if there is nobody to boss it about. Then the Indian mind knows no way to function. It has no inner guidance. The best results will come from appointing a leader at the onset because that gives the group some form of hierarchy. How does a leader take everybody along, without causing disturbance? Conflict is unavoidable. Protest is to be overlooked to progress to step two. One of the best ways of judging the quality and ability of a leader is by looking at the levels of loyalty they inspire from their people. Getting their people to follow them through the good times and even more importantly the tough times is the hallmark of a great leader. And to get people to follow them when things are not going well they have to make them want to stay with them on the journey. In other words they need their people to be totally loyal to the cause and to them as individual and that is where the BJP saw thru and projected a leader and won with absolute majority. There was another party too that had the same intention of good governance and leadership but their methods have not paid off. The Congress has been ruling the country for most part of our independence. They have dominated, dictated, guided forced a certain discipline in every possible way, but that discipline comes from the outside and the moment the outside agency that was creating the discipline is removed the Indian is at a loss. He has poor character. Character is imposed by outside agencies, society, state, industrial growth, development. When there is no hierarchical distinction, it causes peer rela-

Don Aguiar tionships to be more ambiguous, and people want to avoid conflict. From psychology, we know that human behaviors serve fundamental needs. We have the need for competence and knowledge to bring achievement, the need for advancement and the need for affiliation with people. The question is: How do people navigate the relationships they have at work or around them to address these needs? We believe that people want to move up but choose to do it very carefully. Without a leader, a lot of time is wasted with mutual deference but eventually a hierarchy will form perhaps after the first defeat that avoids ambiguity about who is in charge which leads to creating efficient work groups that get tasks done Consciousness is individual, it comes through meditation. Nobody can impose consciousness on you, you have to discover it and that is what the people of India did weighing the above options – they voted the present incumbent government of the Congress out and gave the new incumbent government of the BJP an absolute majority so that the government can be totalitarian, with absolute power for good governance and leadership and for all lawlessness to disappear. If you impose something upon our people they are very law- abiding. For 200 years the English ruled India and found them to be very law-abiding. Lawlessness was never a problem before. But these few decades of freedom have seen India falling apart, becoming a chaos – something which looks strange if you don’t understand the root cause. The root cause is that freedom is absolutely strange to Indian programming. India needs a totally different kind of government. Democracy is an import idea. In democracy peerto-peer relationships have a lot of ambiguity because there is no authority structure. Think of the common M.B.A. case study group where five strangers are put together. When no one is put in
charge, each person is reticent to step up and be a leader. They think, if they take charge, no one will want to be friends with them, and they fear the group will punish them. So you'll hear a lot of deference and hedging like, "I'm not sure if this is a good idea," or "Maybe we could try doing it this way, what do you think?" For all the egalitarian talk, people really like dictatorship. It is extremely functional in order to complete tasks. I am not a supporter of dictatorship. I am for democracy, but democracy is possible only if we can prepare the ground for it. The parliamentary system that has been imposed upon India is so foreign to the Indian mind that it cannot function. You can see it in the Indian parliament – the behavior of the members is so childish. They are continuously quarreling, fighting. No work at all happens in the Indian parliament. And the opposition is for the opposition’s sake - a sheer waste of time and energy. A recent example is the present opposition ridiculing the newly appointed HRD minister about her qualification. While the virtues of a great education can never be discounted, there are countless shining examples of people without collage degrees who have gone on to change the world for the better. Ten years down the line, it won’t matter which collage one went to or how much one scored. Don’t we know what qualities matter on the stage of life? All that goes into building one’s character or personality are acquired in the course of day to day life and not by scoring high marks in examinations. A man of character in India is only a slave. Because he is obedient, he is respected – the more obedient you are the more you will be respected. But the obedient person is really a slave, he has no guts, he has no consciousness, he cannot say “no” hence his “yes” is also impotent. Then it purred and rubbed against my leg and for the first time in months, I smiled. Then I stopped to think, if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could make me happy. So the next day I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed. ” Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy. Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness, by giving it to others “. When she heard that the rich lady cried. She had everything that money could buy, but she had lost the things which money cannot buy. “The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you (government) are; Rather it depends on how happy others (we people) can be because of you (government)…”
And that is what the new government voted to power with absolute majority has promised all of us – with their slogan “Happy days are here again”. We look forward to their reducing the rates of petrol, diesel, power, taxes which in turn will have a chain effect on the reduction of rates in vegetables, consumer goods, etc.

(b) In 5 minutes Oath Taking ceremony should have been over with you at the mike, others standing where they were seated, the President saying I (you repeating your name and each Minister repeating his/her) and then you all taking Oath collectively. The remaining time should have been used to deliver your Maiden Speech to spell out what your Govt stands for. I am adding more points below since you have implemented my some suggestions like: Do not take those above 75 in your Cabinet. Now Work on my following suggestions and I am ready to work with you to make India Numero Uno in the world. 1.. All Religion World Pilgrim Centre in Ayodhya to end the Hindu-Muslim divide. 2.. Peace Memorials rather than War Memorials. 3.. SAARC Union with common currency, open borders, common language - Hindustani. 4.. Transfer Military Budget to Holistic Development of India, SAARC region. 5.. One Family, One Job and Roti, Pani, Kapda, Makan, Toilets first. Rather than mobile phones and failed Nano car project. 6.. Delink Jobs from Degrees. 7.. IIT/IIM grads must work for minimum 5 years in India before going abroad. And every year they must spend one month for next 5 years to serve people of India. 8.. Doctors/Civil Engineers/Lawyers must spend 6 months for classroom and 6 months in fields every year -- so theory matching with practice for proper development of India. 9.. Reduce Bureaucracy and Hire and Fire Policy for Bureaucracy. 10. Judicial Commission to Select, Appoint, Train, Promote, Take Disciplinary Action against High Court and Supreme Court Judges and Retire them if found corrupt. Because corruption in the judiciary has reached nadir. Atleast corrupt politicians can be defeated in elections (like we have done just now), but what about corrupt IAS/ IPS and Judges? IBC is interested only in wealth creation (profiteering) for themselves and have no attitude for innovation to create new gadgets, equipment/machines, processes, which are fundamental to economic development of a country and to be ahead of other countries. Indians are perceived to be making some new drug molecules and IT software. Can any of our companies equal Chinese companies in manufacturing machines, gadgets, chemicals or even big river, power projects? IBC can only think of acquiring (some times hastily, because they do not know where to use their excess cash) businesses abroad instead of innovating at home. Some of the IBC cannot even run them efficiently and so sell them off. They blame (will continue to do so, even if there is a change post 16th May) the government for all their evils. 16. In India we have both wholesale and retail corruption. The former is at policy levels, involving politicians and babus in ministries of the central/state governments and large business houses. This type hurts economy having far reaching effects on it. The retail type is at local authority levels and it hurts a common man the most. The former is most dangerous for the country as a whole and it is in the hands of IBC. to stop it. If the wholesale corruption reduces, the retail one will follow it. 17. In most western countries, contracting companies/contractors contribute a lot to the economy and well-being, by supplementing efforts of larger companies/governments, in developing new products/services, infrastructure projects & so on. They are respected. In India, contractors (a set of IBC) are strange creatures, go-inbetween the government (babus & politicians) and other large companies, to do lousy work and promote corruption. Examples: bad roads construc-

tion/maintenance, poorly constructed houses and what not. Their work needs to be checked and then only paid for. 18. Why do IBC need famous actor/ actresses, sportsmen & such persons (so-called brand ambassador, an MBA hype) in their ads to promote their products? These persons are any way filthy rich and become richer from earnings from the ads by IBC. Instead, IBC can employ less famous, but persons having good acting talent/skill/looks, needing to pay less, reducing cost of the ads (ad-spend) and thereby reducing cost of their products & services and pass price reduction to customers. This will also mean equitable/inclusive distribution of wealth to more needy persons. 19. IBC also practices to give false, misleading information in the media about their products to stay ahead of competitors. Look at ads of washing machines, detergents, shampoos, skin products, toothpaste & what not, claiming to perform no where near real performance. Is this not cheating, unfair to their fellow-beings? 20. By making babus & politicians corrupt, IBC have encouraged them to make complicated laws & rules, mak-
ing it difficult to business in India. Now, IBC is calling on the government to simplify laws & rules, to simplify doing business in India. Is this not strange? Large corporations (India Inc. or Corporate India, business houses like Tata, Birla, Reliance, HUL, many more and their associations, like CII, FICCI, Assocham, just to name a few), have to take a lead in reducing the evils of in-discipline, immorality, irresponsibility and profiteering, by emulating thoughts in the above paragraphs. Medium and small companies/groups, babus and politicians will then fall in line. After freeing India from shackles of British empire, IBC has now an important role to play in freeing Indians from shackles of all aforesaid evils. IBC have to recognize that reforms are not a monopoly of the governments. It is high time that IBC reform themselves to become like JN Tata, GD Birla, KN Bajaj and many such erstwhile patriotbusinessmen to lift Indian economy and reduce poverty in India. IBC should also recognize that even ”Abki Baar Nayi Sarkar” (about whom they are gung-ho and from whom they expect a lot to happen) cannot succeed or even do much for the country, unless IBC change their mindset, for the benefit of India, of whom IBC is integral part.

Owning Your Mistakes Will Make You Powerful
ou already know that failure is a crucial and almost always neces sary part of the path to success. However, there’s more to failure than just learning from your mistakes -- there’s owning up to them, too. Sometimes failure will come because of your own mistakes, sometimes it won’t, but regardless of the reason something didn’t work out, it’s important that you own the problem. There are serious long-term implications for not owning up to your mistakes, because being an entrepreneur means you’re participating in a lifestyle that is designed for the long run. Your reputation is your business and while no one expects you to be perfect, everyone expects you to be honest. Here are ways that owning your mistake will make you a powerful entrepreneur in the long run and why: 1. Be accountable, it demonstrates you’re responsible. When you make a mistake, be prepared to take accountability for it. Reasonable people realize when a mistake has been made and more often than not, owning up to it solves the problem. Not owning up to it adds fuel to a spark and ignites a problem you may not be able to contain later. When a delivery is late, when your inventory system screws up, when you drop the ball and completely forget an important deadline or phone call, don’t try to deny it. As soon as you realize it’s you that’s dropped the ball, don’t make excuses. 2. Be honest, it shows you have integrity. It’s so easy to point fingers when things go wrong or even to not speak up and hope that no one notices the error. However, blame and omission are not effective leadership tools for any entrepreneur who wants to stay in the game long. What kind of example does that exhibit for your team and what kind of

reputation are you building if your client figures out that there’s a problem? By being proactive about the problem and honestly claiming your errors, you’re actually very likely to endear your staff and customers to you even more. Everyone makes mistakes. Literally everyone. Odds are good as long as mistakes are not the norm for you, people will be appreciative and lenient when you come at them with honesty. You’ll also build up trust because everyone knows how hard it is to come forward and own your errors. 3. Be up front, it shows you’re relatable. So you made a mistake, you took personal accountability for it and you plan to be honest about it -- but how do you approach the injured party? Go through this three-step process for taking accountability the right way. First, when you realize you dropped the ball, figure out how to expedite a solution. You may have to get creative if it’s a deadline that has been missed, but figure out how you can deliver on your original promise in some way as soon as possible. Next, contact the person or people who are going to be impacted by the mistake. Let them know first that a mistake was made. You don’t need to get into all the details because that can quickly sound like excuses, just let them know the problem. Then present them with the solution you already devised and see if that makes amends. If it does, great! If it doesn’t, see if there’s any negotiating to be done to find an agreeable solution. Finally, you need to follow up after the solution you’ve provided happens. It’s necessary for you to go above and beyond to own up to your mistakes. A follow-up call or visit will set things right and ensure your customer or client knows they are valuable.

What is custom duty (Import and Export)

ustoms Duty is a type of indirect tax levied on goods imported into India as well as on goods exported from India. Taxable event is import into or export from India. Import of goods means bringing into India of goods from a place outside India. India includes the territorial waters of India which extend upto 12 nautical miles into the sea to the coast of India. Export of goods means taking goods out of India to a place outside India. In India, the basic law for levy and collection of customs duty is Customs Act, 1962. It provides for levy and collection of duty on imports and exports, import/export procedures, prohibitions on importation and exportation of goods, penalties, offences, etc. The Constitutional provisions have given to Union the right to legislate and collect duties on imports and exports. The Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) is the apex body for customs matters. Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) is a part of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It deals with the task of formulation of policy concerning levy and collection of customs duties, prevention of smuggling and evasion of duties and all administrative matters relating to customs formations. It also ensures that taxes on foreign and inland travel are administered as per law and the collection agencies deposit the taxes collected to the public exchequer promptly. The importer as well as assessing officer has to carefully study and apply provisions for taxation.

Pope Francis Condoles Cardinal Lourdusamy’s death
Rome: Pope Francis condoled the death of Indian Cardinal Simon Lourdusamy, who passed away in Rome early Monday after being hospitalised with failing health, a media report said. The funeral service of 90-year-old Lourdusamy, the former prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Oriental Churches, will take place Thursday in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome at the end of which Pope Francis will conclude the last rites, the official broadcaster of the Roman Catholic Church, Vatican Radio reported Monday. After that his body would be brought to Puducherry for funeral. The funeral ceremony would take place on June 8 or 9, according to a statement from Fr Jayanth Rayan, secretary to Archdiocesan Curia, Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. In a condolence message to Archbishop Anthony Anandarayar of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, the Pope recalled with gratitude the Cardinal’s priestly life spent in spreading the Gospel first in India and subsequently in service to the Universal Church in numerous capacities and finally as Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. Born on Feb 5, 1924 at Kalleri near Puducherry, the Cardinal became a priest in Puducherry in 1951. St. John Paul II made him a cardinal in May 1985 and later that year appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, a post he resigned in 1991 for health reasons. Chinese Man Rides Home In Suitcase-scooter Beijing: man in China has built a battery-powered scooter with a suitcase which not only helps in the transpor tation of his belongings but also himself, a media report said Thursday. He Liangcai, a resident of Central China’s Hunan province, demonstrated his invention at the Changsha train station, from where he rode to his home a few kilometers away, Global Times reported. The suitcase scooter weighs seven kg and is capable of carrying two people. It can travel up to 20 km per hour for a distance of 50-60 km, reports NDTV. It also comes equipped with GPS navigation and a burglar alarm. Since it is battery operated, it needs to be charged. He, originally a farmer, said that it took him 10 years to invent the suitcase scooter. The vehicle is made from a stripped-down electric scooter which is embedded into a suitcase. The rider strides the rectangular luggage and grabs handlebars that control the throttle, breaks and lights. He is already a recognized inventor as he has won a prize at a US-based inventors awards ceremony in 1999 for the invention of an innovative car safety system. He said that he got the idea of the suitcase scooter when he forgot his luggage on his way to accept the award in the US.
