‘M’ Is For My Mother!

BY FR. CEDRIC PRAKASH SJ time. And we always wondered where the energy came from. Multitasking seems to be the “in”-thing today, but you did it many years earlier.

Meticulous You always paid great attention to detail whether it was dressing us up for school or sending us

Mum dearest, As ‘Mother’s Day’ approaches, there are several emotions and thoughts that fill my heart and mind and though you are not around, I thought it would be good to put these down in writing. As I bask in the many qualities which you radiated, I would like to highlight some of them:

Magnanimous You have always been a magnanimous person – generous to a fault. You gave and did not count the cost like the woman of the Bible. Your children always knew you were there for them. Besides, your circle of friends was very large and they all knew that you were there, when they needed someone.

Merciful In the context of the above, you consistently exemplified kindness and compassion to all. Quite often, in this journey of life, you were at the receiving end, but we all knew you held no grudge towards anybody. You always overlooked our shortcoming and also the faults of others. Being merciful was surely one of your many strong points.

to Church, keeping the house neat and tidy and even providing for us your delicious food, which was legendary. You always showed great sensitivity to the needs and wants, the likes and dislikes of each one – knowing fully well it was always so hard to please everyone all the time; but you did so in your typical style.

Marvellous Above all mum, you were a marvellous woman! As I said in the oration I gave at your funeral, you were a woman who was sincere, sympathetic, who struggled, who was strong and above all because of your faith, you were truly a woman of substance. A marvel indeed! Thank you for being my mother, O mother of mine! Your loving son, Cedric

Multi-tasker Like most mothers, you were always a multi-tasker. You taught in a school, gave tuitions to make both ends meet, you made our chapattis early in the morning, cooked for us, bathed us, ironed our clothes, taught us our lessons, cleaned the house, kept home and family, presided over the family prayers and did a million more things at the same

India Needs To Start Talking About Sex by Fr Ivan Fernandes

R

ecent electioneering by politicians has thrown up numerous instances of verbal abuse, some of it caste and religion based, some of it going the extra yard to be outright racist and sexist.

The politicians continually mock each other, trade personal insults, level charges of scams and graft both real and fabricated, which are intensified by the plethora of 24-hour television news channels vying for the choicest sound bites. Amid all this rather perverse entertainment there have been several sexual misdemeanor charges aimed at smearing reputations into ruin.

There was at least one good old-fashioned sex scandal with an exposé of an illicit affair complete with salacious details. Digvijaya Singh, a senior figure in the ruling Congress Party and a recent widower, was heavily criticized for an affair with a married television anchor, reportedly in her early 40s.

This is very new and un-Indian, this talking about sex. Indians have an ingrained, unhealthy discomfort with it despite Hinduism being quite open and graphic about sexuality.

India has temples with statutes depicting near pornography, yet the topic of sex (Contd.. on p. 4)

(Contd.. from p. 3) is treated as taboo. Indian scriptures such as the Mahabharata and Rig Vedas talk about sex and sexual relations yet Indians oppose sex education in schools. We love our pornography behind closed doors yet public displays of affection are frowned upon. All this suppression and hypocrisy is not without its adverse effects. Sexual violence including rape, kid-

napping, homicide for dowry, torture, molestation and sexual harassment, affects as many as 27.5 million women in India and adolescent girls are the victims in 24 per cent of rape cases in the country, according to the National Crime Record Bureau’s collected statistics. There are also prejudices, stigma, and a variety of misogyny related issues, as well as feticides and mental health cases that stem from an inability to talk openly about sex. News headlines such as “Gay professor murdered for sex,” “Minor girl gang raped by five minor boys,” “Student kills minor cousin fearing disclosure of his porn addiction,” “Minor raped at gunpoint” and “Woman cop ends life” all speak loudly about repressed sexuality. During a recent conference involving the Ministry of Women and Child Development, UNICEF and a few Indian NGOs working for childrens rights, it was reported that 53 percent – more than one in two – children in India are victims of sexual abuse, yet speaking about it is considered taboo in Indian society. India, it seems, needs a collective sexual reawakening. After all, young people between 10 and 24 years comprise 30.2 percent of the population and 20.9 per cent of that population are adolescents between 10 to 19 years. Hence it is imperative that sex becomes the cross-cutting theme across relevant

conversations as uninformed sexual and reproductive health choices will place them gravely at risk. How that conversation on sex goes, or does not go, will determine the future population and health of the country. Religion is no panacea. In fact as an Indian Christian I seem to have been doubly disadvantaged. I grew up in a Catholic family, went to a Catholic school and my life revolved around a Catholic parish. Sex, if it was mentioned at all by adults, was almost a dirty word. With Jesus in the scriptures virtually ignoring the topic of sex and the Catholic religion’s overemphasis on tradition, negation and a high prohibition of premarital, extramarital or homosexual activity, coming to grips with my own sexual identity during adolescence wasn’t easy. So maybe our politicians have it right after all this election season. Maybe they are starting a revolution by shedding the inhibition to talk about sex – even if it be limited so far to unearthing and hurling sexual misdemeanor charges at other politicians. Sex after all is natural and it does serve some purpose in the procreation of the species – at least. Ivan Fernandes is a journalist and commentator based in Hyderabad

End Of Suspense By the time this appears in print, the fate of thousands of aspirants standing for elections will have been decided. It will also decide who will ultimately lead the nation after this most vociferous and slanderous election campaign the nation has witnessed. Each party plays the ‘holier than thou’ game, yet it does the same thing. The verbal attacks have become more and more vicious with some calling for Modi’s arrest, others putting a bounty on his head, someone calling him a butcher and yet another likening him to Hitler. The BJP in turn has kept up relentless tirade against the Congress in general and the Gandhis in particular in the guise of ‘fight against corruption’. They know that if the Congress has to be defeated, the first family of that party has to be targeted. The party has gone overboard which could have been more measured. The ‘neechi rajneeti’ and ‘denial of permission to hold rally in Varanasi’ episodes were fully exploited by Narendra Modi for maximum benefit. He is the shrewdest politician as his interview to Times Now showed. He however failed to convince viewers that the term ‘Hindu’ does not mean a person who practices Hindu religion, quoting the apex court which actually had said ‘Hindutva’ is not a religion. These are two different terms like a Catholic and catholicity. The BJP has not played the religious card openly. It has outsourced it with people like Baba Ramdev and the likes of VHP, Bajrang Dal etc with their army of supporters are there to supplement the efforts to discreetly polarize and win over the majority vote to its full potential. It may be said that religious heads / leaders have not been totally non-partisan. Even the call by a Christian Bishop / College Principal was uncalled for. Christians are, by and large, an educated lot and they do not need to be tutored on voting. Each one has a choice and a mind and it is up to the voter to decide, even if he chooses to vote for the most communal or even a communist party. The Church need not interfere in the process. It can exhort Christians to exercise their right to vote with full sense of responsibility and after careful consideration.

VIEWS on NEWS As things stand, the NDA with BJP at its helm would have won fairly comfortably if the various surveys are to be believed. There is no doubt that the NDA will form the next government with or without Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister. But Rajnath Singh has said that if Modi cannot be the PM, the BJP will not mind sitting on the opposition benches. If the party really feels so, it only shows how much sway this one man has over the entire political party – ‘Abki bar [sirf ?] Modi sarkar’ By the way, the latest controversy about the full blown picture of Lord Ram on the back-drop of a stage from where Narendra Modi was campaigning has naturally upset all other parties. The BJP played its card well saying the local leaders did it. Surprisingly, the PM-in-waiting who has a keen eye for minutest of things, failed to ‘notice’ Lord Ram. He obviously saw it and could have asked the organizers to remove it. When Shiv Sena candidate [Kadam] in Mumbai openly threatened the minority community, Modi preferred to keep quiet instead of distancing himself from the statement. If he really failed to see larger than life image of the Lord, how will he see the problems of the nation once he takes over? *****

Mighty Hurry The Congress Party in particular and the UPA in general, has been in a mighty hurry for the past one month or so. They have resigned to their fate, if the body language of its leaders, is any indication to go by. They have lost the race and lost it miserably heading for the worst debacle of its existence. There is nothing to look forward to because, the Yuvarj they projected to lead from the front, failed miserably. Narendra Modi may have his ‘chai stall’ to fall back on but Rahul may have to find something. With jobs hard to come by, he may add to the tally of the jobless. And mind you, if Modi occupies the high office, he will not vacate it in a hurry and that should be a matter of worry. The government is on its last leg

by Marshall Sequeira but the Ministers think otherwise. If they had shown the same enthusiasm for a lot of things, the country would have been in a better shape today. They wanted to appoint the new Army Chief hoping that, once the opposition comes to power and go into the murky details during the V.K.Singh era and corruption allegations, he will bail the disgraced leaders. Similarly, when it came to Snoopgate, the government had all the time in the world to name a judge but wasted the opportunity by delaying it. Suddenly they wanted to rush through the exercise. There is a strong possibility that there is ‘quid pro quo’, possibly the Robert Vadra case and NCP, NC drama is stage managed to show that the hands of the government are tied. Fortunately they have abandoned the idea. The latest development about the ‘father & daughter’ the key figures in the whole episode approaching the apex court, appears to be a brainchild of the BJP leaders. There was mighty hurry in the appointment of Lok Ayukta and every effort was made to get the selection panel in place with its own set of guidelines. Eminent people distanced themselves from such a farcical exercise. The UPA government knew well that a really independent man at the helm will spell disaster for many ministers and bureaucrats. There is no way the UPA can hope to come to power and save itself from the onslaught of the new dispensation. It may be good for the Congress Party to extend a hand of co-operation to the new government and hope that in return they will not be vindictive though UPA does not have a good track record on the same issue. At least the UPA should allow the Parliament to function and earn public goodwill and also revive memories of how the BJP stalled the proceedings. It may actually work.

Matheran Feast Don Aguiar

E

arly Saturday afternoon we were at our friends place in Neral to go uphill to Matheran to help out in the feast arrangements for the 4th May Sunday Feast Mass and attend the Saturday evening Novena followed by the 7 PM Mass. On the first Sunday of May every year the Holy Cross Church Matheran celebrates their feast. Ever since Fr. Calistus has been in charge of this Church the feast celebration has gathered momentum with increasing devotees year after year. The feast is preceded by the three days novena followed by Mass at 7 PM conducted & celebrated on each respective day by Fr Calistus Fernandes, Fr Elias D’Cunha and Fr Joe D’Mello and the feast Mass on Sunday morning at 11 AM celebrated by Bishop John Rodrigues and con celebrated by Frs. Elias D’Cunha, Joe and Calistus. Late Saturday evening back to our friends place after attending the Novena & Mass at Matheran Church we settled to watch the TV news headlines before dinner and keeping with the news the discussion went on to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections where one noted that one should be aware that our democracy should not mean just conducting free and fair elections but also ensuring free speech rights to its citizens. Presently one notes a kind of self censorship setting in and people worried that they are going to be bullied and therefore try not to do anything

that will attract the wrath of the communal party and succumb to prop them up. If freedom of expression is under attack, if religious freedom is threaten and if substantial part of society live in physical fear for their safety then such a society cannot be said to be a true democracy. We need to be united and not succumb to the wrath of the communal party to be a true democracy. However it was noted that democracy is totally dependent on white lies called election manifestoes in which political candidates promise you the sun, moon and all the stars of zodiac in return for your vote. You know and they know that after you vote for them, till the next election, and that you are never going to see all those goodies they promised you. But what the heck you vote for them anyway. All for the sake of a white lie- a truth untold – called democracy. Which is not only our manifest, but our

manifesto destiny and now let’s hope for the best? A festive atmosphere prevailed in the Church on the feast day – Sunday Morning – the Church being small got packed well before the Feast Mass with the devotees having to stand on the steps and outside the Church. There were more than three hundred people from all over Mumbai and neighboring areas that attend the Mass. It was nice to hear Bp John celebrating the Mass in Marathi and part English with the choir accompanying beautifully. However with the weather being cool and no sweat, Bp John took the liberty to give an interesting by rather long sermon in both Marathi & English. He told us the story of the scorpion that was trying to get out of the drum and the villager seeing the scorpion struggling to get out decided to get the scorpion out of the drum. On his first try to get the

scorpion out the scorpion stung the villager but the villager tried again and again and finally succeeded in getting the scorpion out of the drum and with that example he told us that the nature of the scorpion is to sting no matter how much good or help you offer to it while that of the villager is of compassion and understanding. Rather than being a scorpion he encouraged the devotees to be like the villager – compassionate, understanding, risk taking, helpful, etc so that our community could be united and prosper. Another aspect of our community is that there are some who want to reach the heights of prestige, power and profit by raising money for the church, but profit handsomely from their efforts. We should avoid exploiting the church for money or profit. There are those who follow Jesus for money, trying to profit economically from parishes, dioceses, communities, hospitals and schools as well as seek power and use the church, use the community, the parish, the diocese to have a little bit of power? It is a temptation that has existed since the time of the early Christian community. Because everyone is marked by sin and faced with temptation people should reflect on their true motivation for being part of the church, and being Catholic. People should ask themselves why they follow Jesus. It should never be for prestige, power or profit, but purely out of love for Jesus Unfortunately, there are people in our community who like to strut around like real peacocks, full of vanity and the need to show off. There are many who knock on the door of the church, looking for some kind of ad-

vantage. Instead people should pray for the Lord's help and grace always to seek and follow Christ with the intention of loving him and only him, without vanity, without craving power and without longing for money. After the Mass we had the rest of the day to ourselves and because we have seen and know Matheran from our younger days where it was totally different to what it is today - It has now more concrete than trees, more noise than quiet, more commercial than the natural village easy going atmosphere, more people than monkeys & horses we decided to check out the new theater in Neral and there to our surprise we noted that the theatre was eighty percent full with people mostly from Mumbai. As the movie progressed I was getting annoyed at the blabbermouths in front. Will they ever be quite, I silently fumed. Finally after close to half an hour into the movie I tapped one of the women on the shoulder and politely said “Excuse me Madam, but I can’t hear.” “YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO!” she exclaimed and turned to my wife and said “tell your UNCLE this is A CONFIDENTIAL DISCUSSION.” I guess people wearing glares in the theatre find it difficult to figure out ages. I have no idea what made her think that I look like my wife’s uncle!. I immediately snapped, “From what angle do I look like an uncle, woman?” She seems to be in her late 20s or early 30s. Interestingly everyone from the people sitting in the back row to the people on either side… all stopped what they were doing – looking at the movie - as if they had been “statued” to listen in on the conversation. My wife kept grinning away. Back in the evening at our friends place for the feast celebration our friends neighbor Mr. Godbole seeing our friend’s house full and in action brought along his American friend to join the celebration. As the two were drowning beers they started discussing their family problems. Mr. Godbole said to his American friend. We have a problem in India. We can’t marry the one whom we love. You know my parents are forcing me to get married to this so called homily girl from a village

whom I have never met once. We call this arranged marriage. I don’t want to marry a woman whom I don’t love. I told them that openly and now have a hell lot of family problems. The American said talking about love marriages. In America we can marry the one whom we love. I’ll tell you my story. I married a widow whom I deeply loved and dated for three years. After a couple of years my Father fell in love with my step daughter and married her, so my father became my father-in-law and I became my father’s father-in-law. Legally now my daughter is my mother and my wife my grandmother. Many more problems occurred when I had a son. My son is my father’s brother and so he is my UNCLE. Situation turned worse when my father had a son. Now my father’s son, my brother is my grandson. Ultimately I have become my own grandfather and I am my own grandson. And you say you have family problems. Mr. Godbole fainted….!!!!! But the celebration continued till the wee hours of the morning. An enjoyable time indeed!!!!! Congratulations are in order for Fr Calistus and his team together with Fr Elias D’Cunha & Fr Joe D’Mello for their excellent organizational skill in making the feast a grand success.

Busyness Equals Effectiveness Ninette D'Souza

O

ne of the greatest paradox of our time in history is that people are facing the challenge of being simultaneously so busy and yet so alone. I wonder how many of us would be able to lend credible evidence in support of the great lie many of us are guilty of believing, that: ‘Busyness equals Effectiveness’. As a teacher, I am exempt from neither the great challenges nor the great lie. While I can vouch that teachers are some of the busiest, hardest working people, the fact remains that sometimes we too can be very alone. I would be the first to agree that the ‘Holidays’ spaced out in measures big and small, over a calendar year, are as good a time as any other for each one to unwind and come back recharged, renewed. Unwind, yes! But it is my belief that we fail to utilize the ‘Quiet’ that we are afforded during these times for a personal renewal. And why wait for the hols? It is the ‘Quiet’ present in the hours of our daily grind that we need to look for. This is the time when personal struggles can be dwelt upon and solutions worked at. If we fail to find this quiet time amidst daily chores then we need to ask ourselves a brutally honest question: “Am I choosing to empower the busyness and problems in my life to take control of my life.” or “Am I choosing to empower my life to take control of my busyness and my problems.” As human beings we are responsible for every aspect of our lives: our thoughts, feelings, actions. Simply put it means we have the God given power to “Choose’ and the choices we make shape our lives. As human beings we are a spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional package. “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” (St. Irenaus) Believing in the veracity of this statement will make us want to be both, personally holy and effective in our vocation, which should then translate into a conscious attempt to take care of

8

... Even a so-called mistake is actually a rich source of learning, an opportunity to build more awareness and understanding and gain the experience that will help us to do, feel and be even better...

our ‘Whole Self’. “I’m too busy” is a common refrain. “We have forty million reasons for failure but not a single excuse” observed Rudyard Kipling. No great life was ever built on a foundation of excuses, so let’s stop making them. It’s easy to get so caught up in the rush of busyness and the call of our routines that we forget the imperative of being aware of the very things we are doing. We lose awareness of the brilliance presented to us by the life we get to lead. So why then is this “solitude” if we choose to make time for it in a busy schedule, so important. What would we really be doing in it? A pertinent question some might remark. But the fact of the matter is what we do in solitude has everything to do with the kind of persons God calls each one of us to be. In solitude we pray and in prayer we encounter God. This encounter reveals to us that we have no need to fear anything. Even a so-called mistake is actually a rich source of learning, an opportunity to build more awareness and understanding and gain the experience that will help us to do, feel and be even better. Solitude then is the time for us to ‘just be with God’. This time alone (even 15-20 mins. a day) is essential for daily spiritual renewal- a must for a human being seeking to be fully alive. This time is not to be confused with that spent in listening to spiritual songs and chants on the mobile or the i-pod while bustling around completing chores. It’s important to give the Lord his due!

Solitude also offers us the opportunity to develop an intellectual life. I seriously wonder what the answer would be if each one asked themselves: “When was the last time I did some spiritual reading?” I am not talking about devouring ‘Sacred Space’ in the TOI or poring over Self-help books, for the answers to life. God is the best ‘Self Help Guru’ one could find. Turn to Him. He’s waiting with open arms. That’s his promise, not mine. Tending to our physical health by means of a balanced diet, quality sleep and regular exercise keeps us refreshed and energized daily. How to fit these in? By doing away with frivolous activities that are a drain on our every resource, while using Time Management for optimum productivity from the others, is the answer. Giving relationships priority in our lives will help us grow emotionally. Keeping in touch with friends and relatives is comparatively easy in this day of e-mails, SMS’s, MMS’s and even brief phone calls at 30p or 50p a minute. Rather than milling around the ‘Idiot Box’ every evening it would be infinitely better to spend quality time as a family even if it is going to Mac-Donald’s for a snack, or visiting the Mall, or taking in a movie at the theatre. As I mentioned earlier, God has given us the power to choose and when we exercise this power in union with the divine, we experience exhilaration in our life and work. Life favours the devoted. The more you give to life the more life sends back. Folks around will see in us confident, passionate people with a purpose in life. As we come to the end of an academic year, I invite all of you dear readers (students, parents, friends, colleagues) to reject the lie that: Busyness equals Effectiveness. Experience tells us the opposite. Life is all about how our daily choices stack up to craft our destiny. Each day life sends us ‘Chances’ to learn, grow, and step into being our best. Let’s not miss them. Some opportunities never come again. Let ‘Regret’ not be a choice we make.

A Call for Good Governance The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has reportedly identified land- related interventions in Gujarat and its implementations of e-governance in pollution control as a model for other states (Times News Network). However, PRASHANT, the Ahmedabad based –Jesiut Centre for Human Rights, Justice and Peace has affirmed otherwise. The points it has raised should be a wakeup call for all States and Organizations. It focussed on the role of how powerful vested interests and large corporations play in Gujarat; how large chunks of land are taken away from the poor and marginalized small farmers in the name of ‘development’ and conveniently given away to powerful corporate houses ; of how thousands of fisherfolk have been denied their livelihood because of the establishments of ports; of how big business houses have a monopoly on much of the States’ resources. It zoomed on how the so-called ‘development model’ of the State is essentially about the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer; of how in the name of ‘beautification’, poor people were driven away from their homes on the banks of the river Sabarmati to the outskirts of the city; of how thousands of small entrepreuners who sell their wares and earn their daily wages from cottage handicrafts, will now be driven out from the ‘ Teen Darwaza’ area; of how manual scavenging still blatantly exists all over the State. It zeroed on the adivasis and the dalits; of how they have been systematically deprived of what is rightfully theirs; of how they are co-opted and made to think they are ‘vanvasis’; of how the ‘jal-jungle-jameen’ is no longer regarded as part of their environment and cultural upbringing; of how the dalits have not been given access to schools and basic amenities. May I also add and pinpoint— the growing atrocities on women and fe-

male foeticide; the persecution of minorities through the anti- conversion laws , extra judicial killings, rampant corruption and foul pollution. The need of the hour is a strong Lokayukta and creation of wealth and jobs. So wake up the new government at the Centre, States and Public-Private-Partnerships. Do not trample on the human rights of the weaker sections of society. Instead, follow the Golden Rule enunciated by Jesus for good governance and cordial relationships: “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12). Use POTA, not NOTA During the darkest days of World War II, when the Axis Powers were advancing menacingly across the European Continent, and London was under siege, Winston Churchill was asked as to why he fought a losing battle. He replied, ‘So that someday, in some unknown country, an unknown citizen will enter an unknown polling booth, and vote for an unknown candidate of some unknown party.’

It is common knowledge that in every fourth Annual Pre Election Budget, generous allocations are made for ‘Minorities’ development and upliftment. Reservations have transcended Economically Backward Classes (EBC), and religious boundaries. NOTA is a futile exercise as the re - poll is held only after a predetermined index is reached. Press on the Above, (POTA), is possible if the voter is an active participant, and not a passive observer in the government of the country and State. There are 101, 20,000 Christians voters in India. The Catholic Church in India sprawls over 164 dioceses. The Archdiocese of Bombay comprises of 11 deaneries with 122 parishes. The Catholic population is about five hundred and twenty five thousand and seventeen (525,017) persons. After Vatican II, the Church founded Parish Pastoral Councils (PPCs) in every parish, to assist the Parish Priest (PP). (Christus Dominus n. 27) The PPC is an umbrella organization comprising of Small Christian Communities (SCCs), a Parish Finance Committee (PFC), a Civic & Political Cell (CPC) and a Parish Youth Cell (PYC). The PYC should be aware of the approx. 6% Current account Deficit (CAD), about $ US 22 billion, hanging like a Damoclean sword over the future citizens. Every month, a consolidated report is submitted by each PPC. In a 5 year Election cycle, 122 parishes submit about 7320 reports. The PPC should highlight the working of the CPC and PYC. After becoming adults, the Parish Youth should continue their activities in the PPC/CPC. The Archbishop and the higher echelon can confidently represent the Church and the Community, by protecting our Educational Institutions, and Hospitals, and safeguarding the rights of our Teachers and Nurses.

The Month Of June A New Beginning !

I

t is a new beginning although we are in the middle of the year – it’s the month of June and the beginning of the Monsoon season. It is a new beginning for many of us who have the monsoon season around the month of June. Take for instance, the tiny tots who will be entering the kindergarten school for the first time in their life – it is whole New Beginning for them. For the first time they would be sitting together with other children in a classroom; for the first time they would be interacting with their teacher; it will be whole new beginning ! For those children who are already in school , it’s a new beginning for them as well; beginning a whole New Academic year - studying in the next grade, new Class Teacher, new books, etc., etc. For the farmers cultivating rice paddy fields, it is a New Beginning – their fields are all ready for sowing new seeds, and looking anxiously towards the sky for the rains to come down. It will be a New season of the paddy crop. What about us in the city – for us also, it is a new beginning, we await the monsoon. Our lake levels have perhaps reached rock bottom and we need the rains desperately in order to fill up the lakes to ensure that we get sufficient water for the year ahead. There will be prayers for sufficient rainfall - no matter that there might be floods in several parts of the city, there will be mess all around us. Come June, and we would look up to St. Anthony who it is believed to be Saint of Rains – he intercedes with God to send down the rains ! At several places where there are dams, people will look forward to the rains to fill up the dams so that they get water for irrigation till the next monsoon. Well, it is a new Beginning for a lot of people in general. And while we look forward to a new beginning, we need to think of our environment. June 5th is celebrated as “World Environment Day” all around the world,

10

but it seems like this day has got no significance to many of us – it is just another day. Well, it may be, but we are missing the point – it is a call to take stock of the situation. We are all contributing towards destroying the Earth in some way or the other – in ways we do not realize. There is no gainsaying the fact that we need to take care of the Earth; we need to conserve our limited resources, not just for ourselves but for the future generations as well. We must come to realization that we are indeed killing this Earth slowly but surely. So, now what do we do ? We need to ask ourselves, what is our contribution towards saving our precious Earth ? Perhaps, it is a time for a New beginning – to take that first step towards saving our Earth from further degradation – however small that step may be. So many ideas have been put forward in the past, like using biodegradable items, limiting the use of plastic in our daily life, segregation of waste, saving water, rain harvesting, etc., etc. But, then who cares ? We will still continue taking plastic bags from the vegetable vendors even for the smallest items, we will still continue throwing all sorts of waste into our garbage bin, we will still continue wasting water, we will still continue using up all the resources from this earth and leave nothing for the future generations ! All those ideas, all those suggestions seem to have fallen on deaf ears ! To Hell with the Earth, who

BY MELVILLE X. D’SOUZA cares ? That will continue to be our attitude ! Have we not experienced showers in this very city of Mumbai long after the last Monsoon season ended; incidentally, the last Monsoon season was extended well beyond its time. Have we not seen unseasonal showers in Mumbai and other cities like Nasik from where we get our onions – those small bulbs which bring tears to our eyes not just by their very nature but also when their prices touch the sky. There have even been Hailstorms. We are seeing unseasonal rains in other parts of the country as well. We can see the several earthquakes occurring around the world; we can see the effects of the rising sea levels around the world, flash floods, torrential rains, cyclones, etc., etc. Well what does all this point to ? If this is not ‘Global Warming’ then what could it be ? We need to wake up, we need to do our bit and yes we share this planet with others, so we must simultaneously work with others to save this planet. This planet belongs to ALL and so, if this planet is destroyed, then we shall all perish. As the UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon says, “Planet Earth is our shared island, let us join forces to protect it”. NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE A NEW BEGINNING – the Monsoon season is on it’s way !

Making Water A Commercial Comodity Against Human Right The World Bank Wants To Privatize Water, Here’s Why It’s A Terrible Idea! by Preetika Bhateja The fresh water available on this planet is enough for our human needs, but runaway global warming, unchecked toxic pollution and climate change has led to a great shortage as two thirds of the world’s population will face acute water shortages as soon as the year 2025. The World Bank Group (that has been the largest funder of water management in the developing world, with loans and financing) claims to have found a ‘panacea’ to this problem. It pushes privatization of water as a key solution. In simple terms, corporations should own every drop of water on the planet and you’re not getting any unless you pay up. In the decades since the World Bank’s initial support, we have seen the results of water privatization: It doesn’t work. Its own data reveals that a high percentage of its private water projects are in distress, and a 34 per cent failure rate for all private water and sewerage contracts entered into between 2000 and 2010. Why is the interference of multinationals unfavourable? If they come in, rate increases = more expensive services (ask Bolivians), there is no accountability to consumers, only to shareholders, diminishes local control and public rights, can leave not only the rural poor but also the urban poor with no access to clean water, undermines water quality (yes even if corporate sector invests in water, there is no guarantee of better water quality). Some would argue that if water was a commodity which you had to pay for, people would actually start respecting it and not waste it. Companies (including the ones like Coca Cola, etc.) would also be unable to deplete groundwater with indemnity since they would

19 May 2014

have to pay. There would now be an incentive to develop advanced water purification that would recycle water or make potable water from sea water. But then, what will happen if Nestlé itself is given the charge of water, a company that already earns a $35 billion in annual profit from water bottle sales alone? Veolia Water, the 50% partner in Nagpur’s private water operator Orange City Water Private Limited, earned the questionable recognition after it was awarded the Pinocchio Award, the infamous award that highlights violations of social and environmental rights. Should the role of Nestlé and Veolia, in ensuring the health of the global population, be graciously welcomed? If you look at the bigger picture, more questions crop up. Can natural resources be called as public resources? Who actually has ownership and control of the planet’s land and natural resources? If we claim natural resources as our possession, shouldn’t we start thinking about the sustainability of our water wealth? Investing in public water systems, governments taking initiative to allot a limited number of litres to each household without any discrimination, recycling and careful utilization seems to be the only answer if we want to steer clear of privatized water. As an example, Israel recycles 75 per cent of its water and leads the way in conservation of water globally, without any privatization mechanisms. Why not learn from this?

There is no greater natural resource on this earth than water. As the sustenance of all life, water keeps every living and breathing organism, every plant, every animal and every human being on this planet alive. In the same way that without air to breathe, without water we humans cannot sustain life for more than a few days. Due to global warming, widespread drought and increasingly polluted water systems, the projected availability of clean freshwater in years to come to meet the rising demands of a growing global population is among the most daunting human challenges of this century. By 2015 a 17% increase in global water demand is projected just for increasing agriculturally produced food. By the same year 2025, the growing global population will increase water consumption needs by a whopping 40%. While oil played the keenly critical role during the twentieth century, water is being deemed the most valued precious natural resource of the twenty-first century. More people on this planet are dying presently from waterborne disease from dirty water than are dying from all wars and violence worldwide combined. Every hour 240 babies die from unsafe water. 1.5 million children under five years of age die every year from cholera and typhoid fever due to unsanitary water conditions. These incredibly sad, alarming facts illustrate just how significant and critical a clean freshwater supply is to staying alive on this planet.

ogether with my two brothers, Sylvester and Hilary older and younger, We were among many others the very first batch of the School. Both my younger brother and I were baptized in the Holy Name Church. My elder brother was born and baptized in Goa. Rev. Fr. Tarcy Mascarenhas was the Founder Principal of the School. In truth it is his Zeal and concern For the children of the poor section of the Parish that the School came to be. When parents told him that they could not afford to pay the fees his immediate answer was that they pay only one or two Rupees even as small an amount as of 8 annas but they must send their children to school. He took great pains to emphasize the great need of education in the future of a developing India. Meeting success in persuading the parents to send their children to school he commenced the education process in earnest. Our first classrooms were on the 3rd floor of Hari Chamber at old Customs Road. Herbertsons Ltd were occupying the ground floor of the building and they still continue to do so. I vaguely remember it was some time in the later part of the year 1949. HOLY NAME SCHOOL came to be. I believe God

why we were not attending school. Busy with her job of earning enough to feed and clothe us, Mother was not even aware that we were not attending school. So he asked her to bring us to him at school and he questioned us. We said we did not know that the school had reopened. How very concerned Fr. Tarcy Mascrenhas was that the children do not miss out on education. I believe his fatherly love for the poor children of the parish were clearly manifested in these his caring actions. We had Kindergarten, Junior and Preparatory Classes and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Standard. We were at the above address only for a very brief period... perhaps a year or so... I really cannot remember. From here the School shifted to Green Street, where the

The story of Holy Name High School conforms to the parable of the mustard seed which is the smallest of seeds and yet when sown, blooms into a tree, so that all the birds of the air can make their shelter therein. Holy Name School, as it was known then, had a humble beginning in a very old building, a building so old, that it was only the determination to serve, on the part of the Management and Staff, that kept it standing. During the tenure of the Principal Rev. Fr. Valerian Godinho, the school moved to its present premises on Convent Street In 1963. ors, Cabin. This building's name is now Sonawalla Building. I think there was a Merchant Navy Priest in charge of this Cabin and if my memory is correct he was acting Principal for a very short period. I think his name was Fr. Holland. During his brief tenure he arranged a Magic Show for us the children of the School. One item the Magician did was that he produced a whole lot of toffees. Fr. Christians Are Not Complacent Only Concerned

T

he timing is impeccably bad. Christians around the nation are expressing feelings of remorse and apology. In some respects, the Christian community is not complacent to questions of faith’s essence, in knowing that God’s will is nonnegotiable. Prayers, meditation, conferences and workshops on God and faith are growing with scant transcendent experience. Violence, for instance, is strategically targeted on the innocent and weak for major downsizing. The ‘mantra’ is always incorporated in the phrase” for a better tomorrow”. A better tomorrow, indeed – but, for whom? In the past decades, some people went to extremes in the ‘blame-game’ along a significant margin. God and faith was suddenly an issue to experience. The world Christian community was shaken to the core of realization that a person’s belief was being prodded. Something had to be done. The BBC landed miniseries on the God-Faith jingle. Frankenstein and his monster became the focus for all the faithful worldwide. Catholics, today, are on the brink of a cathartic outpouring of world anxiety if they do not take the seriousness of Our Lady’s constant plea to pray the rosary. The defining moment is at hand, and with the fear of terror rising as a wave along the fringes of the world, hun-

BY MELVYN BROWN dreds of millions are feeling the oncoming impact. A few years back the French prelates had brought out a booklet “How Christians and Muslims Speak of God.” The aim of this effort was to reach an understanding of God. It was prepared by Archbishop Maria Carre, president of the Conference’s Doctrinal Commission. Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran had expressed the idea, at the time, that the world is obsessed by Islam. The Christian faith is “ being held hostage by Islam a little bit.” The Muslim people are only a threat by their numbers. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI sought to make amends when he visited the Blue Mosque and prayed towards Mecca, on a visit to Turkey not so long ago. We often view Muslims with esteem. After all, everyone is not ‘the enemy’. To Muslims we are known as the ‘people of the Book’. They share a precious closeness to our Christian faith. They refuse to mutate over the years to a Christian mentality, that has the traits of charitable love, forgiveness, respect

and peace. They make enormous sacrifices, to the extent of putting their lives on the line. Such faith must be considered for discussion, above the choices of anger, hate and violence. Let us not be complacent. Let us be concerned. Be a bit like Gandhi and not all Churchill. Family, work, aspiration should be the three point message to expound as the ‘people of the Book’. Prayer is our shield against criticism. In a world shredded by ‘ warfare’ used to bring about economic inequities and a cowardly show of power for world domination, we Catholics and Christians and those of other strong beliefs who refuse to compromise the fabric of their faith should stand united. We live in the 21st century, in an unprecedented age of untrammeled trust in God His Word and we Christians and Catholics work for His glory. In Saudia Arabia there are one million Christians (many are immigrants), not permitted to practice their faith, or wear signs of their belief. At the other end Christian countries allow them to practice their religion, worship and wear whatever they wish, in most cases allowing them to pray in the middle of a busy throughfare, as in France and Italy.

Contribution Of Coastal Christians For The Growth Of Art, Architecture, Journalism And Literature 1. Most of the Coastal Christians who have settled in coastal Karnataka from 16th century speak Tulu (CSI) and Konkani. Recently Kerala Christians have also settled in some parts of Udupi and D K districts and speak Malayalam. All these people have contributed to the all-round development of the people of this region. I will concentrate on the contribution of Coastal Christians for the growth of art, architecture, journalism and literature. 1.1 Kannada Literature In coastal belt the mother tongue of Christians is either Tulu or Konkani. More than 90% of literature present today in Konkani is the contribution of Christians. Christians also contributed substantially to tulu literature, drama, songs and cinema. Christians of this part of Karnataka have also enriched Kannada and English literature. Basel missionaries have given their invaluable contribution to Kannada literature and journalism. First doctorate in Kannada literature was obtained by Herman Mogling for his thesis Bibliyothia Karnatika from Tubingen University Germany. Dr Ferdinand Kittel published first Kannada dictionary. Even to this day it is rated as

one of the best dictionaries in Kannada. Basel missionaries have also published books in Kannada grammar, riddles and idioms, Jaimini Bharat, Basava Purana, Kumara Vyasa Bharatha and many other valuable books. It is a general notion that Christians specially Catholics prefer English and that they do not speak in kannada in the coastal belt. But Catholics of this region have great contributions for the growth of Kannada language. Dr NA. D Souza is the one of the famous Kannada literary figures today. He has written a number of Novels and short stories in Kannada and he is given Honorary doctorate by Kuvempu University for his contribution. His novels have become award winning Kannada movies. Fr. Prashanth Madtha former principal of St Aloysius college is another great scholar in Kannada. His book Padanidi is a great contribution to Kannada language. Late Francis Dante of Udupi has written valuable b o o k Aliyada Mahachetana Yesu and number of articles and devotional songs on the theme of Holy Bible. Dr. Edward Noronha former professor of Kannada of Mysore University is a famous kannada poet. Fr Pius Fidelis Pinto has written historical books in Kannada. Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh gives Danti memorial awards for the books written in Kannada to encourage people to write in Kannada. The awardees and the books written by them in Kannada are as follows: Year, Book and Author 1995 Mysoru samstanada itihasa Fr. 1.2 English Literature: Christians of Mangalorean origin have enriched Indian English literature. Former IAS officer Richard Crasta’s book Revised Kamasutra i s very well known. Late Louella Lobo Prabhu has written a number of poems and articles in English. Her daughter Gissel Mehtha’s novel Blossom Showers is appreciated by literary persons. Dr Michael Lobo has written a number of English books of great literary value. Important among them are : Distinguished Mangalorean Catholics, Mangalorean worldwides, The Mangalore catholic Community-Professional history/ directory. The Land Called South Kanara, written by Willaim Pais and Vincent Mendonca gives the social and cultural background of undivided south Kanara. Saraswatis children by Allan M a c h a d o , Flora of Karnataka b y John Saldanha are some of the important books published in English by Christians of coastal Karnataka. English one act play Mother of New India written by J M Lobo Prabhu was

published by Thacker and Co in Mumbai in the year 1944. His experience in various countries in published in 1950 by name Inside One world. Louella Lobo Prabhu was a great poet, writer and journalist. In 1971 she received Chamanlal National award for journalism. In 1994 she received best journalist award by New leader magazine in Chennai. In 1993 she was given life membership International Women writers association I.W.A.A. Her poems were also published in World poetry 1993 . For her numerous writings on peace in Middle-east her name featured in Indo Arab who’s who 1993. Her name is also in The Worlds who’s who in poetry 1997. In 1953 Fr. Jerome D Souza S.J., wrote a book called Sarda Panikkar and Christian Missionaries. In 1971 his old students have published all his articles in the book Dr Jerome D’Souzas speeches and articles. Indian Govt has published his articles in Indian Gazzetier in 1967 Christianity in India. Many research scholars have published research articles in Science, social science, literature in National and international journals and many of them have published as books. Many professors Dr.Valerian Rodrigues, Dr Richard Pais , Stephen Quadros have written books for colleges and universities. Edwin j F D Souza’s collection of short stories Chocklets is published by Readers Digest publication and his one story is published by Khushwant Singh in his My Favourite Indian Stories. Create A Good Impression

T

he kind of image you present to the world is determined by your actions, comments, attitude, behavior and even appearance. These things can be noticed within the first few seconds of meeting someone. People will remember the little things you do and that can make the difference you’re looking for.

people will be more focused on what you’re saying and doing instead of how you smell.

Speak clearly and make eye contact Let the person you’re talking to know that you are engaged in the conversation and that you care about what you’re discussing. Don’t mumble or look around, keep your focus on them.

Dress the part Your appearance is the thing people see first. They look at your clothes, hair, shoes, etc. They make assumptions about you before you even open your mouth. If you want to impress people, dress for the occasion. Take time to get ready in the morning.

Use humor This can lighten the mood and bring people down from a tense state. Just make sure you’re using this at appropriate times.

Greet people with a handshake or hug

Be on time If you’re late for something, you’re giving someone the opportunity to judge you without you even being there. If you say you’re going to be somewhere at a certain time, then be there at that time. Waiting for someone when they should already be there is frustrating and annoying.

Don’t break your promises There are too many people out there making promises they know they can’t keep. They promise something because it makes the other person feel better in that moment. The problem with that is that down the road, when you don’t follow through, the comfort that person felt turns into discouragement, frustration and even anger. If you can’t keep a promise, don’t make it. If you do make a promise, do everything you can to keep it.

walks past you at the store and smiles, it is a natural response to smile back. Seeing someone smile can remind others that there are things to be grateful for, that life is fun and exciting.

Be faithful to your partner We hear story after story about divorces and infidelity. It’s everywhere. By being honest and true with your partner, you are showing that you know where your priorities are. You understand what it means to be in a healthy relationship.

Support your children Take time to be involved in your kids’ lives. Know what they’re interested in. Go their games, recitals, competitions, parent-teacher conferences, etc. Listen when they talk to you. Be the kind of parent they know they can go to when they have questions.

Respect others

Personal hygiene isn’t an opThis includes your elders, minors, cotion, it’s a requirement workers, family members, etc. This can be hard when you have to be around someone who has differing opinions than you, or who acts in a way you don’t approve of. But you can still be civil. If you look for attributes you respect in people, you will find them.

Smile often Smiles are contagious. If a stranger

Have breath mints handy. Wear deodorant. Brush your teeth. Wear clean clothes. These are things that should be common sense, but some people really struggle with them. Talking to someone with bad breath is gross. It’s distracting. All you can think about is that you want to give them a mint. Take care of your personal hygiene and

Determine what type of situation you’re in. You probably don’t want to go in to an interview and hug your potential boss, but you should offer them a firm handshake. With close friends and family members a hug shows a level of intimacy. It shows that you love and care about them and gives you a way to physically express that.

Listen to others When someone is talking to you, listen to what they are saying. Don’t be thinking of a response while they are still talking.

Perform acts of kindness Open the door for someone, collect your neighbor’s mail when they go out town, make dinner for someone who just had a baby.

Compliment people Look for the good in people around you and take the time to let them know you noticed. Compliment them on their clothes, their work, their attitude, anything you can think of.

Share knowledge and information with others When you have a skill or talent, share it. Teach others and share what you know and have learned.

Changing Your Attitude

S

uccess f u l l y changing your attitude is dependent on a change in mindset, and successfully changing your mindset is dependent on whether or not you really want to change. Going from pessimistic to optimistic can be difficult, but it will result in a brighter and more enjoyable life. If you really want to know how to change your attitude, here are some simple but effective pointers.

Stop focusing on yourself. A lot of pessimism arises from false or unreasonable expectations, especially when those expectations involve yourself. Make an effort to reach out and help at least one person every day without expecting anything in return. Over time, you may find more joy in giving rather than receiving.

Face your flaws. We all have something upon which we can improve, so whether you're at work, at home, or anywhere else, be open to learning more. Make a list of all your weaknesses and flaws. At the beginning of every week, take one of those listed flaws and think about what you could learn concerning that weakness.

Look on the bright side. In every undesirable circumstance, there is always a way to look on the brighter side. This isn't to say that you should live your life dishonestly, always ignoring the bad in favor of a fake smile. Instead, accept the bad things but also think

19 May 2014

about how much worse it could have been.

Count your blessings. Post up a blank sheet of paper on your wall, or use a journal. Every morning, as soon as you've woken up, think of one blessing in your life that hasn't already been written on the paper and write it down. Counting your blessings will help you see that your life isn't all doom and gloom, that you have reasons to be happy and joyful.

Find a life coach. These professionals make a living helping people find success in many forms, including successful attitude adjustments. They have the experience of knowing what methods work best for the majority of people.

Befriend optimistic people. Sometimes a poor attitude is a result of being surrounded by others with poor attitudes. As it has been said, "Bad company corrupts good character." Consider befriending new people, especially people who are optimistic and have a healthy attitude towards life.

Ask your friends to point out when you are negative or pessimistic in the future. This will help you to see how often your pessimism arises and in what situations it tends to arise.

Ask the right questions. When you're in a situation where you feel your unwanted attitude forcing its way through, take the time to ask a few questions of yourself to help you change your outlook.

Recently, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, set a glorious precedent by washing the feet of a woman. On Maundy Thursday, after the washing of the feet ceremony, the celebrant encouraged us to wash and kiss the feet of our wives. Today, the wife is a supreme symbol of sacrifice, being the first to rise up in the morning and the last to go to bed after a tiring day of multi tasking and managing the two family frontiers of work and home. The feet have meridians connected to the body. There are foot spas, acupuncture centers, and fish healing therapy for the feet. Solomon, the wisest man in the world, was also a busy husband. The queen of Sheba acknowledged that all his wives were happy. (1 Kings 10:8).Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba suffered from some foot ailments. Solomon cured her with foot therapy. Her admiration and tribute to his wisdom and greatness is legendary As recommended by the wise priest, husbands should kiss the feet of our wives every morning to deepen the dimensions of Love and Life. This practice should be recommended at Marriage Encounter, Couples for Christ and prenuptial sessions to increase spousal Love and bonding.

The Spirit - Filled Life Have you checked your fuel gauge? Are you filled with the Holy Spirit or running on empty? Are you running at peak performance or just sputtering along? Regardless of your condition we need to stay filled with the Holy Spirit if we are going to maintain peak performance in our daily lives. There are number of reasons why we need this filling. First, we need to be Spirit-filled in order to deal with sin and Satan. One of the main reasons that Jesus was able to defeat Satan in the wilderness (Lk 4:11) was because He was “full of the Holy Spirit”. Maybe you’re unable to stop that sinful habit that’s bound you so long, or maybe you are so easily get caught up in worldly ambitions and material things. None of us has the strength in our own flesh to get the victory. Why? “For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits in the high places.”(Eph 6 :12) A second reason for being filled with the Holy Spirit is to have the fruits of the Spirit. “ You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self –indulgent passions and desires.”(Gal 5:24). Growing the fruit of the Holy Spirit demands a flow of life within the tree itself to produce fruit. Scripture says in Mathew12 :33; “Make a tree sound and its fruit will be sound; make a tree rotten and its fruit will be rotten.” Only by being filled with the Holy Spirit can be fruitful Third, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to pray effectively. God answers every prayer according to His will but we don’t always know what God’s will is every time we pray. Even the apostle Paul admitted this problem in Romans 8 :26-27 “ The Spirit too comes to help us in our weakness. For when we cannot choose words in order to pray properly, the Spirit Himself expresses our plea in a way that can never be put into words, . And God who knows everything in our hearts knows perfectly well what He means, and the pleas of the saints

22

Capt. Mervin John Lobo expressed by the Spirit are according to the mind of God.” St.Paul also says in Ephesians 6:18 that we are to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions.” What exactly does St.Paul mean by praying in the Spirit? Putting Romans 8:26 and Ephesians 6:18 together seems to indicate that He’s speaking about praying in tongues. What other kind of praying could involves “groans that words cannot express” and is an activity that is possible to do “on all occasions.” So, are you praying effectively these days? If not then you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit! The fourth reason we need to be filled with the Holt Spirit is in order to worship effectively. Ephesians 5:18-20 states “ Be filled with the Spirit. Sing the words and tunes of the psalms and hymns when you are together and go on singing and chanting to the Lord in your hearts. So that always and everywhere you are giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Whether it be singing out loud or making music in your heart to the Lord or thanking Him, it can only be effective worship if you are filled with the Holy Spirit. In Gospel of John 4:24, “ God is Spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth.” I suspect that sometimes what we regard as great worship-lively music, hand raising and clapping, shouting and even dancing, is more a product of mere human emotion. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit we can worship with or without a piano or a guitar, with or without an excited crowd, or without a worship leader. Don’t get me wrong. All these things are good, they are mere scaffolding –aids to worship, not the worship itself. A final reason we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit is in order to witness effectively. Acts 4:31 states that “ As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked; they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to

proclaim the word of God boldly.” Why are so many of such poor evangelist? Is it because we lack training seminars? Is it because we don’t have good tracts and books to give to the unsaved? Is it because there are no people hungry to hear the truth? We have plenty of all of the above. What we lack is not human ingenuity or a hungry world but enough men and women filled with the Holy Spirit. Do you witness naturally and spontaneously? If not then you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit so fully that it will overflow to those around you. But now the question that many of you like to ask is how do I become filled with the Holy Spirit? Below are a few simple keys to receiving and maintaining the Holy Spirit filled life: 1) Repent- the Holy Spirit fills a holy temple 2) Desire to be filled 3) Submit to the Holy Spirit ,s control 4) Ask for the Holy Spirit’s infilling with faith Capt .Mervin John Lobo, (Master Mariner) who has studied Sacred Scriptures in Jerusalem, and contributes articles on various topics for different magazines around the globe.

Pray like… Pray like David in the early hours of the morning, Like Daniel at noon, Like Paul and Silas at midnight, Like Peter when in danger, Like Hannah when in sorrow, Like Job when you’re suffering, Like Stephen when you’re dying... Like Eleazar when you start any work, And like Solomon when you finish any work. And yes, pray like Jesus at all times with loud cries and tears without ceasing and without becoming weary — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili
